The Gollancz Book of South Asian Science Fiction redux

[EDIT: just for clarity, this comment refers to the "New Horizons" UK variant of this title, not the Hachette India one referred to in an item further up this talk page]

Hi, I just submitted a couple of edits for the two pubs in the database for this, as it has been rescheduled for the umpteenth time.

However, both pubs are/were showing as tp, whereas this one has an ISBN that (currently at least) is associated with an ebook e.g. publisher's site. As such, the edit for the pub date on this one also switches the format.

I'm guessing the original value (as far as I can tell, you were the original submitter for both pubs) was either bad data at Amazon originally, or accidentally selecting the wrong value in the format drop-down. (God knows I've done the latter too many times...) However, I thought I'd just ping you to let you know I've made these edits, just in case you think the format might have been correct. Given how long ago these pubs were supposed to come out though, I doubt any of us would have much recollection of that sort of detail from that far back in time ;-) ErsatzCulture 10:59, 24 January 2021 (EST)

No worries. It's been getting kicked down the road for well over a year now. :) ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:47, 25 January 2021 (EST)

Cthulhu's Creatures

Well, since this 2007 book wasn't even on ISFDB until I entered it a few weeks ago (solely in order to include the original Simon Clark story so I could complete the contents of his 2010 collection The Gravedigger's Tale which didn't have any contents at all until a few weeks ago when I tweeted Mr. Clark and got them directly from him) I feel like my finding 1 copy on the entire internet that shows anything but the front cover of Cthulhu's Creatures is enough to make an educated guess and say the publisher's name as written on the back cover is the way they wanted it. There are countless different spellings of the publisher's name online and I just picked one that seemed like the most logical one, but I didn't have any physical proof. If there's a choice between the way it's written somewhere in the book and randomly picking 1 of the online spellings, I'll pick the book. If anyone else ever finds a physical copy and the publisher's name is spelled differently inside the book, then they can certainly fix it. And by the way, it's coarse, not course. The Time Machine

Hi,

We seem to have the same edition so I fixed a few notes (added date for the afterword and fixed 1962 to 1992 in the Copyright statement (typo?) and added a cover. Each of the updates has moderator notes with details. If yours has a different cover (Easton did quite a few...), I will back out the changes and clone for mine. Let me know. Annie 22:40, 21 February 2021 (EST)

And does it really have 2 introductions -- it looks like the Aldiss one is an afterword here (even if when you read it, it says introduction) - so that unpaged Introduction should be removed and instead the Afterword varianted to it? And is Joseph Mugnaini credited as Joe or Joseph (in mine it is) on the title page? Or do we have 2 different books with the same copyright statement and no date? Annie 23:03, 21 February 2021 (EST)
And while we are talking about Easton and Wells - did they really print "Writres" and not "Writers" here? :) Annie 22:43, 21 February 2021 (EST)
I'll have to look at these when I get home. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 11:35, 22 February 2021 (EST)
I've removed the Introduction by Aldiss as there is no such thing in this edition. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:27, 23 February 2021 (EST)
The other was a typo. It's now been fixed. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:29, 23 February 2021 (EST)
So that's your cover? Good - but that means that the third cover I know of belongs to yet another edition - I will see if I can track it down. I made the variant - the Aldis afterword here is his intro in the previous Easton edition :) Annie 12:51, 23 February 2021 (EST)
PS: What about the credit for Mugnaini's work? Annie 12:53, 23 February 2021 (EST)
He's credited as "Joseph" in this one. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:58, 23 February 2021 (EST)
Yep - same here so I swapped the variants. I think this book now looks as well as it can be. :) Annie 14:02, 23 February 2021 (EST)

help with translation edit

Hi I am new to isfdb and have just submitted an entry (4922175). New Editors and special rules

Hello Joe,

This should not have slipped in - not with an editor that had been here for all of 5 days (the format is really tp, the synopsis in Portuguese...) - if we do not catch these practices early, it gets very hard to get them unlearned early... :) I cleaned it up and I know you usually keep track of tp/pb so I am just dropping a gentle reminder to be careful around new-ish editors. :) Annie 14:48, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

If we're international in our content, why can't the Portuguese title have a Portuguese synopsis? Especially for a translated work. As for tp/pb, I generally take their word for that. I don't really have time to look up every single new entry I'm reviewing to make sure the measurements are what they say they are. Thanks for catching it, though. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:06, 16 March 2021 (EDT)
This is a bad practice for tp vs pb and makes a joke of keeping them separate in the DB. 90% of users will use pb because it sounds like paperback, not because they checked. And if they do not get corrected early on, it is hard to fix later. Once they get used to it, that is fine, spot check works - but for new editors it is critical to make sure they are on the right path.
Synopsis Help Page: "The synopsis must be in English even if the title's language is not English.". If you want to change that, I might even support you but as the current rules are, we use English only in Synopsis. :) Annie 13:39, 16 March 2021 (EDT)
I agree that submissions by new editors often need additional TLC to make sure they are guided in the right direction. I am working on a software enhancement to make it clear which submissions were created by new editors. Ahasuerus 14:13, 16 March 2021 (EDT)

Kawakami's People from My Neighbourhood

Hi Joe, I'm only asking you because I see you've worked on Hiromi Kawakami's biblio in the past. I've added her collection People from My Neighbourhood, which has 34 miniature stories most of which have a genre bias. I've already made every story a variant of its Japanese original, however I'm unable to locate each story's original Japanese title. Want to have a go? Cheers. PeteYoung 10:20, 10 August 2021 (EDT)

I don't know that they should be in that series, though, as that's just the title of the English collection they are in. The stories aren't connected as far as I could tell. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:47, 10 August 2021 (EDT)
I've been reading it over the last few days. The stories are all linked in the same neighbourhood and share many characters and events, so they really ought to be grouped together as a series to differentiate them from others. There could well be more stories not contained in this collection and I'm certainly open to a less cumbersome series title (maybe just 'Neighbourhood', unless there's a specific title Kawakami has for these stories?). Thanks for your help. PeteYoung 16:02, 10 August 2021 (EDT)

Time at the Top

Hi. You verified a copy of the 1986 Bantam Skylark Time at the Top P518125, as containing cover art by Peggie Bach and no illustrations.

I infer that the book actually contains the original 1963 b/w line drawings by Bach. The 1st edition hc cover is illustrated by one such drawing; unfortunately we have an image only for the undated 6th printing P551227. See also our record of the 1st Bantam pb edition P233049. Both those records are by Marc Kupper.

WorldCat does report the illustrations by Bach. I submit PubUpdate that merely adds the OCLC id. --Pwendt|talk 18:37, 19 August 2021 (EDT)

Foundation's Edge

I saw this edit in my changed verifications, with as moderator note 'update page count based on unnumbered blank pages between page xiii and page 1'. The help text however states 'For example, a book with a page count field of "viii+320" has "viii" as the highest numbered page with a Roman numeral. (Note that there are no spaces in the page count.) Pages without numbers that fall between the two types of page numbering can be ignored.' I changed the pagecount back to xiii+426. --Willem 14:59, 21 September 2021 (EDT)

Okay. That doesn't make sense since we're trying to accurately count the pages, but whatever. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:04, 21 September 2021 (EDT)
It does make sense, since we're recording the last numbered page. --Willem 15:54, 21 September 2021 (EDT)
Except then it leaves actual pages missing inbetween the two styles of numbering, so it's inaccurate. I'm not going to argue about it, though. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:58, 21 September 2021 (EDT)

Thousands separator in prices

As a few of your verified are caught in this - just a quick note - a lot of Japanese prices on the site miss the thousands separator which is mandatory under the price field rules:

  • "Period (".") should be used as the decimal separator and comma (",") as the thousands separator, regardless of currency or native number format, e.g. €7.80 or Lit 1,000."

so they popped up on the report today and will get fixed in the next days. I know Japanese does not use them natively but as per the rules, that does not matter - we standardize the formatting. Thanks! :) Annie 13:52, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

I'll try to remember, but my brain doesn't usually notice it because there is no thousands separator in Japanese (it's at ten thousand). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:45, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
Oh, I know. Bulgarian does not have it at all AND we use "," for the decimal one. Same for most of Europe. Always trips me when I am adding European books when I had not touched them for awhile. You will see quite a lot of pings for changed PV-ed pubs because of that though. I try to add a note what I am doing but just heads up. :) Annie 16:50, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
I can take care of the Japanese ones. That way I don't get the ping for them. (^_^) ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:51, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
Also, it seems to me this could be easily automated upon submission. If there are more than three numerals without commas, have it automatically insert a comma in the appropriate places in the price. This is done with dashes in ISBNs, and I imagine a similar thing could be done with the prices. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:54, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
Won't help the ones already in the DB - and yellow warnings are coming for irregular prices (When the FR is implemented). Some of it possibly can be automated - feel free to post here :)
Sure, unless I forget and start on them again - they are on the top of the report and I am using the report as a palate cleaner amongst other things. I will try to work on the bottom part of the report. :) Annie 16:58, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

El tercer mundo después del sol

Hello,

This thing had only the ISBN, title, cover, language and type correct and the ebook was even worse (the editor forgot to add the ISBN) - even the author was wrong. Adding it to the DB in that form with no source notes is almost useless and makes the DB look sloppy. :) Here is how it looks now and its ebook. I know that some of these can be challenging but... this should not have been approved and left in that form. Thanks! Annie 06:48, 20 October 2021 (EDT)

I can see your point about the author name, but we approve publications all the time without pricing. The bigger problem seems to be Tocchan never responding to anything. Perhaps we need to look at his/her contributions and see if they are a net positive to the site. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:42, 20 October 2021 (EDT)
The price was the last thing that worried me in this one (and that one I expected to be left empty - I just got determined enough to find it last night). However, the wrong author, the lack of any identifying information on the ebook (no ASIN, no ISBN, no publisher link) and the lack of ANY notes about the source on either of the two were problems that should have been rectified on approval (an the two titles needed merging) :) . We claim that we only add properly sourced data - and yet that was anything but - we really should not allow non-PVd pubs with no source notes.
As for the net positive - the editor has the ability to unearth the weirdest stuff (and they add contents often later on) - his submissions require a LOT of work though. But they are consistently bad - you will never see ASIN on an ebook, ISBN on ebooks will be there only if it he is working off a publisher site that lists them in plain text, you will always get the separate formats as NewPub and you will never ever get publication notes unless he clicks on the "data from the publisher site" in the radio boxes. I'd rather approve and fix that lose the books usually - but just approving and not fixing should not be a choice for any moderator... :) Annie 14:40, 20 October 2021 (EDT)
I can understand that. Regarding the name, I suspect I got distracted and forgot. Thanks for fixing it, though. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:35, 20 October 2021 (EDT)
:) No worries - I've done bigger blunders. :) I am just trying to make sure we do not just rubber-stamp his submissions with no sources and no IDs of any type. Sends the wrong message somehow. Thanks! :) Annie 16:58, 20 October 2021 (EDT)

The Audible JP ASINs

I just stumbled on one of them again here and that made me remember them again: instead of waiting to see if we need a new External ID, why don't we put these up in Web Pages for now as links to the Audible Japan's record? That way we have a direct link and we do not lose track of them. I had been doing the same for Audible.de and Audible.co.uk when I am adding books from them (see the search). What do you think? Annie 22:45, 3 November 2021 (EDT)

I'm not sure what you mean. I've been putting them in the external ID field since the links work for the specific version of Audible. That one was likely done before I started doing that. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:38, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
The Audible External IDs links lead to Audible.com (the US site). Are you saying that they forward to Amazon.co.jp for you based on your browser/computer locale when you click on them? The ones that are on both sites are clear but not all ASINs are valid across all Audibles. Annie 13:48, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
I was remembering incorrectly. I had this discussion with Ahaseurus a while back and placing them in the notes was what was decided upon until he gets something in place to handle them. We may have to do a separate option (AudibleUK-ASIN, AudibleJP-ASIN, etc.) for those that aren't the same across languages. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:51, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
OK - we are back on the same page. :) And yes - we will need multiple of those eventually. But until then: What I am proposing is to start using the Web Pages instead of just the Notes. They can be moved from there as easily as they can be moved from Notes and we will have the correct links in the meantime as opposed to just inert strings. Plus that makes it a lot easier to see how many we have from co.uk, co.jp., .de and the rest so easier to justify adding a new external ID/Template. Annie 13:56, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
Sounds like a plan. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:18, 4 November 2021 (EDT)

Parliament of Wizards

Hi Joe,

Just a quick reminder that a future book becomes eligible to be added to the DB 90 days before publication. This is more than 90 days in the future. Plus books so far ahead in the future tend to get delayed often so adding that early is a bad idea - we keep re-dating them after that (and with anthologies, that means stories and parents and what's not also need re-dating). So let's not add books that are not eligible to be here (yet) under our own rules. Thanks! :) Annie 14:35, 4 November 2021 (EDT)

Generally, I agree with you. In this case, it's within a couple weeks of 90 days, and I know the people doing it. It's not going to change. It's all set in stone now. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:46, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
I believe you. But when the next editor tries to add a book that will come out in June, they have a precedent to use and to complain that some people are allowed to while others are not. So let's stick to the rules when possible. As for "not going to change" - a lot of things were set in stone for last April/May and then the world closed. So never say never and all that. :) Annie 14:53, 4 November 2021 (EDT)
