Sanderson Kickstarter

Hi Nihonjoe -

I'm finally getting around to entering these. I've made a few small additions to the hardcover of The Sunlit Man and will likely make similar changes to the other three, if needed. These seem to me to be within your notification preferences. I do have two questions about the audiobooks, that require discussion. For The Sunlit Man audiobook, you had uploaded a different cover than the one I have, however you hadn't verified the publication. I double checked that both versions of the files (single MP4 vs individual MP3s) have the same cover. They do, and I went ahead an uploaded mine. I wanted to check with you before deleting the cover that you uploaded. I do see that there are copies in LibraryThing using the same cover that you uploaded. However, the cover that I uploaded is the one I got from the Kickstarter version. For your verified record of the audiobook of Tress of the Emerald Sea, there is a note stating "Only available on Spotify and Speechify". Clearly this was included in the Kickstarter and it is also currently available from Audible. I also note that the Spotify link has a later publication date (January 9) than what we have and it appears to be the source for the price. I'm unsure of the source for the ISBN. Perhaps we should have separate records for the Kickstarter and Spotify publications (and for that matter, the one sold by Audible, which has a 2024-04-23 publication date. Thoughts? Lastly, I'm wondering if the Kicstarter editions should be put in a publication series ("Four Secret Novels"). I do see that Audible puts them in a series named "Secret Projects". A publication series would be useful, I think, at least for the Kickstarter editions, but perhaps also for the others that are published by Dragonsteel. Please let me know your thoughts on these. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 08:20, 22 June 2024 (EDT)

I've got another question regarding the ebook version of The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. You've got a note that you verified the PDF version and thus included a page count and numbers. I must not have grabbed the PDF version as I only have the EPUB. Ordinarily, we don't enter separate ebook records for different formats (PDF, EPUB, MOBI). However, my EPUB has a different ISBN (978-1-938570-38-4) than the one in the current record (978-1-938570-33-9). I'll also note that the ISBN in the record is identical to that of the hardcover. I think if the ISBN varies, we should probably add a separate record for the EPUB. However, if the ISBN is incorrect and matches the EPUB then I would recommend adjusting the note stating that an EPUB format was also available. We should also add a page number for the novel itself. Could you check your ISBN and let me know how to proceed. I'll also note that there is another record that matches my ISBN, but with a later date. I'm guessing that this would be a trade (i.e. not Kickstarter) edition. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:25, 22 June 2024 (EDT)
Hopefully, I can answer all the questions you have above.
  • What were the additions? I can see you changed the ISBN, did something in the notes, and added the OCLC/WorldCat number.
They're in the notes to the moderator. I added that first edition is stated and that there is a full number line.--Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
  • I likely just forgot to verify it. I've fixed that now. The cover I uploaded for The Sunlit Man audiobook was the cover that was used on Spotify when I redeemed my code from the Kickstarter. It appears they have changed it since then as my Spotify copy has the newer version you upploaded. I think the original version I uploaded should be kept for the Kickstarter version and a new entry made with the newer cover. The retail version of the audiobook costs more than the Kickstarter version, too ($20.99, per Amazon), so it makes sense to have a separate entry for it.
The cover I uploaded is also from the first edition released on October 1st. I didn't use the Spotify version, but instead downloaded the MP3 files which have the cover embedded in the files. If the Spotify edition had a different cover, that would be a good reason to enter separate publication records for each variation. Assuming that you used Spotify or Speachify for your audio editions, I think this is the only one of the four with a difference. I always used the MP3s. I don't think we need a later undated publication record for Spotify for the cover change as it just brought it in line with the MP3 and later trade editions.--Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
  • The date is from when the files and codes were made available to Kickstarter backers. For the four secret projects, those dates were (in order) January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. A week or so after backers got them, they were made available to the general public, so that's why the dates on those platforms are a little off from what I entered. The audiobooks were made available only on Spotify and Speechify about six months to a year (I believe) before they were made available on Audible/Amazon due to Sanderson's frustration with Audible's/Amazon's business model (basically, they were screwing over the authors). So, there should be at least two release dates for the audiobooks: the one for backers (on the 2023 dates I gave above, which was made available a few days later to users of Spotify and Speechify) and one for Audible/Amazon about six months to a year later. I don't know that we need to have a separate Kickstarter and Spotify/Speechify publication since the date difference is only a few days.
I'm fine with a single publication record for both Kickstarter and trade. I think we need to remove the Spotify/Speechify statement though. The Kickstarter was also available in MP3 (which I downloaded) and also M4B. The later trade edition from audible would presumably be distributed as an AAX file. If you agree, I can make the edit and add my verification.
  • I corrected the Tress audiobook price as it should have been $15, the same as the other Kickstarter editions. I will have to see if I can find the source of the ISBN.
Worldcat has a record with that ISBN. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
  • I agree a publication series would be good for the four secret projects. I've created one, but only for the Dragonsteel editions. Not sure if we should create Tor and Gollancz pub series, too. If we do, we should have each of them link to the other two.
Thanks for doing that. I'm a bit ambivalent about the series for the other publishers. Amazon and Rakuten appear to be marketing the trade editions as "Secret Projects", but that may be more from the seller than the publisher. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
  • For the PDF versions of the ebooks, you can still visit your digital rewards page (you have to login there).
I've done a few Cory Doctorow Kickstarters and he always takes down the fulfillment page after a while. It has something to do with is not wanting to keep data on his backers. So, thanks for letting me know I can still get to this one. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
  • Regarding the ISBNs, I'll have to go look at the files to see what I can find. That may take a couple days as I have some other things I'm working on that need to be finished ASAP.
I grabbed the PDF and it does have the same ISBN as the hardcover. Since the EPUB version has a different ISBN, should we add a separate record. There is no variation in the ISBN between the three flavors of EPUB. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
I think I answered all of the questions. Let me know if I missed something. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:23, 25 June 2024 (EDT)
Yes you did, and I've responded inline above. Alas, it has caused me to pose a few new questions regarding your opinions on how to proceed. Don't worry if you're busy and can't respond for a while. None of this is particularly urgent. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:16, 25 June 2024 (EDT)

I'll check my copy to verify the info. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:47, 26 June 2024 (EDT)
For this edit, the ToC has "Wendigo" (which is the correct spelling), but the starting page for the story has "Windigo", so the edit can be approved. The note should indicate the discrepancy, however.
For "In Hell-hole Swamp" by Walter De Leon, it's not genre (I just read through it quickly) and I deleted the entry for it. This edit will need to be hard rejected. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 23:10, 4 July 2024 (EDT)

I accepted the first edit and hard rejected the second. I added a pub note regarding the spelling difference between the ToC and title page for the first one. Please adjust if you prefer different wording. -- JLaTondre (talk) 07:55, 6 July 2024 (EDT)

The Full Moon Coffee Shop

Hello Joe,

When you have a chance, can you get the transliteration, the author name and the Japanese editions sorted out for this one? From the looks of it, it may be a series in Japanese but if you do not feel chasing them all down, just fixing the author and title here will be enough. Thanks in advance (and no rush at all!). Done! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:33, 26 June 2024 (EDT)

Moggies in Space

I have recently been switching C. V. Walter materials over to Kortnee Bryant’s page. See this page, they are the same person. I see that you verified Moggies in Space, but Amazon lists this book as by Kortnee Bryant while your verified copy lists the book as by C. V. Walter. Could you double check your copy. Maybe a later copy has changed Walter’s name to Bryant’s. MLB (talk) 04:05, 2 July 2024 (EDT)

I will check my copy at home. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:42, 3 July 2024 (EDT)
My copy clearly shows "C. V. Walter" (actually "CV Walter", but we add the punctuation here) on the cover and on the title page. I'd be cautious about changing any other "C. V. Walter" entries to "Kortnee Bryant" unless you are varianting them to her as a pseudonymous work. They may very well have been released under "C. V. Walter", and then later changed. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:20, 4 July 2024 (EDT)
I've cleaned up the pseudonym relationship (for some reason, it was going both ways). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:29, 4 July 2024 (EDT)
Just added the cover credit for this book, from her facebook site. I need a life. MLB (talk) 22:30, 7 July 2024 (EDT)

Swan Knight

Hello Joe,

I have another Japanese one that can use some help: Swan Knight. I found a title for the original but that is as much as I can do safely. Thanks! Annie (talk) 13:10, 3 July 2024 (EDT)

Mysterious Setting

Hello,

When you have a chance, can you track down the original of this one? Thanks! (PS: Seems to be long enough for a novel despite the series it is in - 55K words in the English text). Annie (talk) 20:48, 8 July 2024 (EDT)

Yeah, that's the case. For covers and author images like that, it's best to upload the image directly so we don't have to worry about it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:20, 18 July 2024 (EDT)

Analog Science Fiction and Fact, July-August 2024

● I added some content to your verified listing of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, July-August 2024. I added some illustrations, columns, and added some columns to their proper series. I also added notes to your listing. I can only apologize for my tardiness in attending to this issue of this magazine. It took forever to get to me, my mail goes to my brother, and his mother-in-law is dying so it took some time for my copy to get to me. You might like to check out my additions and see if they align with your copy. MLB (talk) 01:35, 22 July 2024 (EDT)

Looks good to me. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:25, 22 July 2024 (EDT)

The Lantern of Lost Memories

Hello again,

Apparently every publisher out there had decided that Japanese translations sell well... One more for you to track down: here. Thanks! Annie (talk) 22:28, 22 July 2024 (EDT)

Many of them are quite good. Done! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:36, 23 July 2024 (EDT)
Thanks. Oh, I do not doubt it. But translations into English usually come out from specialty publishers and these seem to have broken into the mainstream ones. Thus the comment. :) Annie (talk) 15:06, 23 July 2024 (EDT)
