Currey and Contento Verifications for Conan the Adventurer

Checking our secondary sources for Conan the Adventurer per this discussion, I discovered that we had the verifications for the 1966 printing on the copy we both have which is from 1967. I've removed the ones I had added, but Currey and Contento are yours. Of course, these should all go back on the 1966 publication record after it is created. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 13:03, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

SFBC ed. of The Garden of Rama

Can you confirm that the retail edition's ISBN is not present in your copy of this publication? I'm holding a submission from another editor who has a copy with the ISBN from the Bantam Spectra retail edition: 0-553-07261-7. There's a note in your record that it lacks an ISBN. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 02:37, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Definitely no ISBN. This was probably printed by the SFBC a few times and they didn't change the BC# in the 90s like previous decades [looked at the edit, bad form on the ISBN SFBC # combo ... rookies!! ;-)))]. Perhaps the note should be amended to say that 'some' later SFBC printings do have an ISBN?? The notes are definitely a holdover from a Locus1 entry, and they likely would have received their review copy when first printed. --~ Bill, Bluesman 04:20, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. I'll inform the editor, and update the Note to say that some later printings included the retail ISBN. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:41, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

"The Caves of Night", by John Christopher

I changed the publisher of your verified publication from "Hodder and Stoughton" to "Hodder & Stoughton", since this was the only book listed this way, compared to 981 listed as published by "Hodder & Stoughton". Chavey 17:38, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Just checked and the publisher is still Hodder and Stoughton, which is exactly as spelled on the title page, regardless of 981 or 9,810 that are otherwise. Regularization for its own sake is the kind of bibliographic BS that Locus does, and we've been correcting such [from that source] for years. To automatically 'correct' an unverified record, or one from an editor no longer active [standards do change] is one thing but this [as-yet non-] correction is presumptuous at best. --~ Bill, Bluesman 00:49, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

SFBC ed. of Rama II

Sunbeam Caress

I'm trying to match Finlay illustrations in art books with the original illustrations in magazines. In If, March 1968, the current entry shows two illustrations by Finlay for the story "Sunbeam Caress". The other active verifier says his copy is missing some pages. Can you tell me if there is a Finlay illustration for that story that shows sharp black forms amid clouds, and if so, where that illustration is? Bob 20:48, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

"In the Land of the Unblind", by Judith Merril

While verifying a book of mine that contained "In the Land of Unblind", I noticed that it was a poem, and not the "Short Fiction" that we currently have it listed as. I checked it with another book I have that contains that title, and verified that it was a poem there as well. An essay in Galactic Central refers to it as a poem, and Judith Merril's daughter lists it as a poem in her bibliography of Merril's work. So unless someone knows a reason otherwise, I'll be changing that work to a poem in a couple of days. Since this affects a content item in 7 different verified publications, including two of yours, one here and one here, I am asking those verifiers to post any comments about this change on my talk page (to keep any such comments together). The Best of Henry Kuttner - Cover artist

Hi, I found the cover artist for The Best of Henry Kuttner. It is Dean Ellis.--Dirk P Broer 07:49, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

The Atom Conspiracy vs ...

... The Man Who Had No Brains are the same novels. Since you verified The Atom Conspiracy - any objections..? JLochhas 16:50, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Done. Odd the German digest would 'translate' it's own title as the magazine serial's title. --~ Bill, Bluesman 17:13, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
More than odd: The translated title is "The Atom Conspiracy" - and the original title is stated as "The Man Who Had No Brains". Complete coverage of the domain.... ;) JLochhas 21:49, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Galaxy Science Fiction [UK], No. 30

Somehow, you ended up with two different submissions for the same journal issue: this one, verified yesterday, and this other one, verified today. Chavey 21:30, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Jackpot

In Galaxy Science Fiction U.K. No. 45 Finlay illustrated the story "Jackpot". Please tell me which illustrations show (a) a man in the nose of some sort of airship or spaceship, clouds out of the window and (b) a man and an alien crouching on opposite sides of a low table, others in the background looking on. Bob 19:30, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Time Bomb

Can you confirm that the cover art of this publication is credited to "William K. Hartman" and not the more-credited artist William K. Hartmann? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:19, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

One 'n' only. --~ Bill, Bluesman 21:38, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure what that means. If the record is correct, then "Hartman" should be made into a pseudonym and the cover art record varianted. Or better, the record should be changed to the canonical form of the artist/author's name and then noted that the credit is a typographical error. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:59, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
All you asked about was the spelling. Found the original artwork and added appropriate notes. --~ Bill, Bluesman 22:18, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

"Blood Trillium", by Julian May

Omni, December 1989

Can you confirm the credit for the essay on page 16 of this issue? There's also a "Howard Wornom" in the database and the names are similar enough to question whether they could be the same person. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 00:20, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

'Wornom' indeed! Corrected. --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:51, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Ute Osterwald(er)

Hello, Bill! There are two titles for Ute Osterwald. Just wanted to check if the credits are correct; if so, I'd like to establish a pseudonym and then variant them. Christian Stonecreek 15:50, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Both credits are correct. In both cases her husband Hans is mentioned but not credited, so no doubt the same artist. Think the '80 cover ended up on a book??? --~ Bill, Bluesman 16:09, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the fast response, Bill! The 1980 cover was in fact previously published on a book cover (not yet entered) and was credited there to both Osterwalders. Stonecreek 16:54, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

George M. or George H. Krauter

Can you confirm the credit for the art on page 84 of this issue of Analog? The artist is more commonly credited as George H. Krauter. Also, it's strange that the art appears two pages before the start of the story. That happens several times throughout the record. Thanks for checking. Some Metallic Robets

Would you mind double checking the essay on page 57 of this pub? Is it really Some Metallic Robets (with an 'e') instead of "Robots" as in the other versions? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:07, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

The 1982 Annual World's Best SF

Hi. I reviewed your primary verified The 1982 Annual World's Best SF. Since PV1 is inactive, as PV2 I come to you. The only discrepancy I found was with the page count. The record shows 'xii' for the Roman numeral portion of the count, but in the pub the highest paginated is 'ix'. The guideline states: "For example, a book with a page count field of 'viii+320' has 'viii' as the highest numbered page with a Roman numeral. (Note that there are no spaces in the page count.) Pages without numbers that fall between the two types of page numbering can be ignored."... I'm thinking the count should be 'ix+273' instead of 'xii+273'. Would you concur? "Anathem" cover artist name

Hi. I just saw that you've set the cover artist of an "Anathem" publication to Yolande de Korte. However, her name is "Yolande de Kort" (without the "e"), who already has an author record. See here as well. Jens Hitspacebar 23:11, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Also, it's one of only three publications (all verified by you) that have Digit Books as publisher, where Digit is the usual form. Thanks. Horzel 07:48, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Added the artist credit. As for the publisher, that's what's on the title page in each case, and probably more. "Usual form" [ie: 'regularization'] is what Locus does. Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 22:16, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

I don't doubt the reference is there but you've cited this book at least twice and it strikes me as odd that a Collection would only have one story ...?? --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:48, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
If you mean the Cowley book then I'm probably not quite getting where your confusion arises unless you thought I was referencing the story as opposed to the cover art. Almost all the images that appear in the four Terran Trade Authority books by Cowley appear as book covers hence it will almost certainly be cited on multiple occasions. --Mavmaramis 13:42, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
No confusion, the book cited is listed as a collection, but there's only one story in the contents .... --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:01, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
Ahh yes that's because the entrie contents aren't listed on the the two records for the UK editions but are listed on this edition. Artwork is on page 83.

As the Curtain Falls art credit

Hi. Is the art credit really supposed to look like this in this pub ? Or is it one of those ISFDB subtleties I don't know about yet ? Thanks. Linguist 08:24, 9 June 2015 (UTC).

There's a 'subtlety' there all right, just not a good one. At some point there was a brief combining of cover artists whose names were always used together; Leo & Diane Dillon, The Brothers Hildebrandt which plays havoc when one tries to give each a separate entry, as either has been listed as a pseudonym for both. The only way to correct it is to delete all cover artist credits and enter each one separately. Problem is now there will be two separate artists credited [as in this case there should be] and some other editor may again combine them at the author level since the two separate records will look like 'strays'. This record is fixed, for now. --~ Bill, Bluesman 15:21, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

The Needs of the Many

I think a new "Patrick Moore" needs to be created. One of the artist listings for The Needs of the Many links to Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore when it should probably be the San Francisco bay area computer game designer Patrick Moore. Fellow artist Melvin Yu is located in the bay area also, Chris Legaspi works and teaches in the Los Angeles area and Denis Korkh works in the animation and art departments for Star Trek Online and works out of Campbell, California.SFJuggler 04:43, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Garry Kilworth's "Triptych" in Other Edens

A question about your verified Other Edens. Does the introductory essay explain why the three Kilworth stories are called "Triptych"? I have them in In the Country of Tattooed Men, where they also appear as a "triptych" although at least two of them have appeared separately. Scanning the text, I see that they are pretty much unrelated except for the fact they are all rather surrealistic and could conceivably be set in the same universe. The introduction in In the Country of Tattooed Men is short and doesn't say anything about individual stories, but I wonder if perhaps the introduction in Other Edens may be more helpful. If there is indication that they are set in the same world, perhaps we could enter them as three separate titles and create a series. Ahasuerus 16:18, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Alas, no. The stories/whatever they are, are not mentioned at all in the Introduction. It is most likely the author submitted them as such, but without direct confirmation from him ..... ??¿¿?? Apologies for being so long in replying but it's summer in Canada ... I own an acreage ... the projects just take precedence. And I have a LOT to do!! Smith's "The City of the Singing Flame"

I was reading the story notes for the Night Shade edition of Clark Ashton Smith's stories and I discovered that there are multiple versions of his story "The City of the Singing Flame". It appears that it when it was published in the Spring 1940 issue of Tales of Wonder, the editor combined the story with its sequel "Beyond the Singing Flame" by altering some of Smith's prose and adding a bridging paragraph. Further, when Smith was preparing Out of Space and Time, he was unable to locate either his carbon or a copy of the original Wonder Stories appearance of the tale and instead sent along tear sheets from Tales of Wonder containing the combined story. I have compared the two versions from the Night Shade collection which contains the original story and the Bison reprint of Out of Space and Time which contains the combined story. The former ends with "Tomorrow, I shall return to the city." Whereas the combined version ends with "And there, at length, we came once more to the greyish-green columns that were the gateway between worlds." I have corrected my copy of Out of Space and Time as well as the unverified copies. You have volume 1 of the Panther reprint which probably needs the same correction. I'll also leave a note on the other active verifiers page pointing them here. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 02:27, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

Indeed, the Panther version ends with “And there, at length”, etc. Thanks for spotting this. Linguist 12:53, 13 July 2015 (UTC).
The Panther reprint contains the combined version and is divided up into 7 headed segments (chapters ?). "Tomorrow, I shall return to the city." is at the end of the third segment. Title of story is "The City of the Singing Flame". The Mayflower-Dell 1966 edition of The Other Side of the Moon also has this combined version also as "The City of the Singing Flame" but is not divided into segemtnts. Hope that helps. --Mavmaramis 18:47, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
I can confirm the above re the Panther versionProf beard 09:20, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

"David Annadale" in "Tesseracts 7: New Canadian Speculative Fiction"

David Annandale's site confirms that he was the author of "Tremendum" in your verified Tesseracts 7: New Canadian Speculative Fiction. Could you please check whether the title page says "Annadale" or "Annandale"? TIA! Ahasuerus 18:17, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Afraid I can't answer this [please see below re :Dragon of Ishtar], possibly a typo but someone seems to have varianted the piece already. If I did that then the spelling in the record would be correct. I'll check when possible. --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:37, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

The Dragon of the Ishtar Gate

I have cloned The Dragon of the Ishtar Gate that you verified. My copy is a hardcover, not a paperback. Originally I had just made a secondary verification, but when I went to enter Stephen Fabian's artwork in this pub, I noted that you had said it was a tp. The price of my hardcover is the same as you noted for the tp. I thought I should check with you to be sure your pub is indeed a tp. And, of course, to let you know that I will copy the interiorart credits I've entered for my pub into your pub if you wish. Bob 00:11, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

I regret I can't answer this at this time. I've finally begun construction of a proper library, and except for my Easton Press editions and some hardcovers, I have absolutely no access to my books [probably not until at least September, maybe October]. Best suggestion is to clone for a hardcover record and when I get access I will be rechecking older messages so the original question[s] does get answered. Apologies. --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:32, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Definitely a TP, price is correct. --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:43, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Ring Around the Sun

The cover art for Ring Around the Sun is by Jim Warren -- the art appears in both art books (all 3 versions of the first one), one of the card sets and is posted at his website here Susan O'Fearna 23:02, 27 July 2015 (UTC) -- because you're the primary verify-er, I can't add cover art credit... Susan O'Fearna 00:17, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Well, of course you can! The sources seem fine. Adding credits without such would be more problematic, with same a note regarding the change is fine. Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:46, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

The Mutant Weapon vs. Med Service

Please see ISFDB:Community Portal#The Mutant Weapon vs. Med_Service as a primary verifier of Quarantine World, The Med Series, The Mutant Weapon / The Pirates of Zan, & The Mutant Weapon / The Pirates of Zan. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 23:46, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Sin mundo proprio

Hi! I know this isn't one of your primary verified books, but you did a lot of other verifications so thought I'd tell you I've submitted some additional data, notes and cover image for it. I found an OCLC record so you may want to change your OCLC verification if my submission is accepted. You had the date as 1965 but Tuck (and other sources) has it as 1963, so I changed it. Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 03:51, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

If you found an OCLC record, just add the number of same to the notes and take the verification! Cheers --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:41, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

"Lyon's Pride", by Anne McCaffrey

You are now the primary verifier for this book. The notes say (or said) that the price in Canada was $29.95. But my copy says the Canadian price was $28.50. Could you check your copy and see if there are really two versions, or if this was a typo? Thanks, Chavey 16:56, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Record corrected, not sure where the inaccurate price came from. --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:35, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

We Are All Legends

Fabian illustrated We Are All Legends. At least three of the illustrations in that pub are also in Woman & Wonders, a Fabian art book I'm currently working on. Would you please enter the individual artworks in that pub so I can variant them to the art in Women & Wonders? Bob 19:55, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

I've entered the artwork for this pub. If you object, please just remove it. Bob 23:00, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Barry N. Malzberg's A Triptych

You have verified this pub, this pub, & this pub which all contain A Triptych and this pub which contains Triptych. Are these two stories variants? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 01:42, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Other than the similar titles, the two have nothing in common. --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:53, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Boris & Julie Ultimate Collection

Another editor wants to change the ISBN of this publication to an ISBN-13. (See this discussion.) Can you confirm that your copy has an ISBN-13? If so, either the publication date (sourced from Locus1) is incorrect, or this is the earliest use of ISBN-13 that I've ever run across. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 02:25, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

One I can get to! ... and yes it does have the ISBN-13. --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:48, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

While There's Hope

Hi, Bill. Considering the german publication, I'd think that it should really be HOPE in the titles of CHAPBOOK and SHORTFICTION (and art also), as it is an abbreviation in there (and should also be in the original version). Christian Stonecreek 13:47, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Done. --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:56, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

The Laughing Magician

I notice you entered information for a hardcover edition of The Laughing Magician by Jack Vance. Are you sure it was published? I know a tp version was published in 2011, but I don't know if a hardcover was also published. I had an order in for the hardcover in since mid 2005, but my usual sources claim it was never published. Bob 01:27, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

And it has disappeared from Locus. Wonder where the artwork came from .......?? --~ Bill, Bluesman 03:03, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

The Space Swimmers

A number of the Fabian illustrations in The Space Swimmers by Gordon R. Dickson (which you have verified) appear in the contents of Fabian artbooks I'm entering in the database. Since there are so many illustrations in the pub, I propose to add those illustrations I would like to variant to the art books to the contents of The Space Swimmers, and list the page numbers of the rest of the illustrations in the notes for that pub. Is that acceptable to you? Bob 20:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Other verifiers encouraged me to enter the art, so I have. Bob 23:01, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Through a Glass, Clearly

The cover art for this NEL 1975 edition is by Ray Feibush, according to Science Fiction Monthly, April 1974, page 9. And since this "News" is from April 1974, showing this cover, I suspect that this NEL 1974 edition should show the same cover art as the 1975 edition. Thanks. Horzel 08:15, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Feel free to amend for the Feibush cover but there is no reason to assume the previous edition had the same cover. If it did the printing statement would have read "Reprinted" not "Reissued" --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:00, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Poems in The Best of L. Sprague de Camp

We've got the titles of the poems listed incorrectly in my copy of The Best of L. Sprague de Camp and I suspect they are wrong across all copies including both of yours ([3] & [4]). Please see this discussion and let us know if we can correct these across all the copies. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:00, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Cover art credit for Sunwaifs

Can you confirm the cover credit for this publication? We have only one credit for David Plourd but a dozen or so for David Plourde. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins|talk 16:51, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

The record is correct, no 'e'. --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:19, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Space, Time and Nathaniel - edits in absence of PV1

I'm verifying my copy of this book [5], but ran up against a yellow "no longer active" notice. There are no other PVs on the record, but as a source verifier, could I ask you about some edits?

 • The price displayed should be the decimal £0.30, not the old 6/-, which is in brackets on my copy, indicating publication after UK decimalisation.
 • There are better sites that can be linked to for provenance of Bruce Pennington's cover art, not least his own website.
 • The contents list needs page numbers.

If you're in agreement, I'll attend to these points; being a newbie I need the practice :) Astrodan 12:16, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Edits above carried out, plus "Foreward" and "Introduction" added to Content. Astrodan 16:18, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
Since you added the data, you should add a verification so anyone with questions can ask instead of getting the same "no longer active" result .... --~ Bill, Bluesman 02:34, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I missed that at the time; only a couple of weeks into the learning curve. Now done. Astrodan 14:01, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Default display of non-English translations

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Currently only English translations are displayed for unauthenticated users. The proposal would change it to displaying all translations. The downside is that the Summary page could get longer and harder to navigate.

I am trying to get a sense of how widespread the support for this change is. TIA! Ahasuerus 01:03, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

I have no opinion on this. --~ Bill, Bluesman 03:22, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Survey Ship

You verified Survey Ship, a pub illustrated by Stephen Fabian. I added one of the illustrations to the contents, the one that appears in a Fabian art book. Bob 22:23, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

The Drought - pub note amendment?

The copyright page of my copy of this book states "Published in Penguin Books 1968. Reprinted in 1974" This is in conflict with the pub note shown which states ""Reprinted 1971"; month from here". The here link goes to the book listing on The Art of Penguin Science Fiction website; , which shows the same reprint year as my book, 1974, and the month, April. Worldcat also only shows 1974 listings, not 1971. My book is identical to the listing (pub record #120181) in every other way shown.

This seems to suggest that the 1971 date shown is a misprint/mistake. Assuming that is so, and in view of PV1 BLongley's passing, and the resignation of the PV2 Dragoondelight, as PV3 what would you say is the right way to deal with this? Astrodan 16:05, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Just a typo, now fixed. Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 03:26, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
