== Adding a book: How to ==
+
== Archives ==

So let's start with your request for "City of Thieves". In this case, we already have a few copies of that book [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1752456 here] so we will do ClonePub or AddPub. As there is no copy from the same publisher, let's do an AddPub (ClonePub also works but will require more attention not to submit something wrongly so... AddPub is cleaner. Here are the steps:
+
[[User_talk:Aardvark7/Archive2017-2021|Archive2017-2021]]
* Locate the title record - the link I posted above.

* Look on the left menu and locate the "Add Publication to This Title" link. Click on it, it will open [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/edit/addpub.cgi?1752456 this]. This is how you add a new book to an existing container record (stories, serials and poems and art records are non-containers, everything else is).

* Follow the fields and add the date (1984-00-00 is the best you can do unless you can find the month in a source), publisher (we use "Dell" and not "Dell Books" for Dell), format ([https://www.worldcat.org/title/city-of-thieves/oclc/10947602 OCLC] says 18 cm and we know it is paperback so it is a mass market paperback which means you want to chose "pb", price (with the $ sign at the start), number of pages (from OCLC), the Catalog ID (91374) in the Catalog ID field and/or 0440913748 as a derived ISBN (look at the [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/publisheryear.cgi?34+1984 Dell 1984 records] to see how we usually enter these books) and a note of sources ("Data from OCLC and whatever other sources you had... as of 2020-10-09") and leave "Other website, later printing/edition or another source (please explain in Publication Note)" checked in the sources radio boxes. [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Help:Screen:EditPub This] explains each field in details.

* Where it says external IDs, locate OCLC/Worldcat and add the number from above 10947602 (as we found it anyway, may as well add it). Not mandatory :)

* Scroll a bit (on a smaller screen) or look lower on the screen and find the "Cover Art" section. Where it says Artist1, type Richard Corben.

* Now press "Submit Data" at the bottom and wait for a moderator to get to it.

Once approved, we can add the actual scan of the cover or a link to it (you cannot use the link you posted because we do not have permissions - we can either find the same in Amazon or upload the one we have here) and do some verifications (as you will be adding OCLC, you can do the secondary verification with it). But let's do that step by step.

Let me know if you have any questions and let's try adding this book. I will be around the next few hours so I can approve and work with you as soon as you submit it - if not, someone else will catch it when they can. :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 18:30, 9 October 2020 (EDT)

Hello,

OK what am I doing wrong? I am logged in. I go to the page for City of Thieves. I select Add Pub. It comes back and says that I am not logged in.

I removed the BN number from [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?879063 here] because it was the ISBN. When the BN number is ISBN13 or the ASIN number is ISBN-10, we don't record them in the two external IDs - as they are in the ISBN field and we already have live links to them based on the ISBN in the left menu. == Matching Amazons ==
: Approved [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?799919 here] with a few small changes, including adding a link to Amazon for a cover. We can replace it with a local one if you want to upload one. A question - where does the cover credit for Richard Corben coming from? OCLC has Iain McCaig as the illustrator (which usually means the cover as well but it is different sometimes) but that may be a mistake (as he is the Puffin artist... [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 23:10, 9 October 2020 (EDT)

:: Never mind - the credit was in your original notes - I will add it. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 23:11, 9 October 2020 (EDT)

While Amazon.de is not a bad source [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?883106 here], I'd also check Amazon Italy for any Italian books - the different Amazons may have different data (look Inside in one and not in the other, some extra comments or reviews and so on) so I would check all of them and always list the "proper language one" (plus any others that gave me additional info). Just saying :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 17:18, 22 February 2022 (EST)

: I was using links from DuckDuckGo to check different sites. Actually most of the info came from Libroco & Book Depository. I thought I added a link to Luca Oleastri's site but it didn't seen to attach. I can across this by accident.

:: Well, you added Amazon.de on an Italian book so I stopped by to mention that Italy has their own Amazon version as well. :)
 +
:: Merged [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1493455 now]. Next time when we already have the novel, instead of using NewPub, you can use AddPub - then we won't need to merge after it is approved :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 17:38, 22 February 2022 (EST)

::: I was debating, but since it was a story in a book of a different title, I wasn't sure.  My link was missing the h in the href. It goes to his page that shows the art and the cover. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 17:55, 22 February 2022 (EST)

:::: It is a novel in an omnibus (added as an anthology because of a very old obsolete rule - I am looking into how to fix - as the authors need to be different in that case) :) You cannot use ClonePub (because there was no publication with just the novel) but that is what we have AddPub for :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 18:00, 22 February 2022 (EST)

I have always hated the Amazon links. In my Pinterest boards, I combine the artwork with the book. I use screen shots and always name my sources. The Amazon link never goes to the book. I always have to go hunt for it and many time can never find it. eBay has been a good source of covers. I have a screen shot of the title but not sure how to upload it.  Also is there a way I can go back in to see what you did?  Never mind I found it (edit this pub) [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 10:56, 10 October 2020 (EDT)

: You can add your image if you want to - just follow the instructions in the welcome message above. The Amazon /I/ images are stable - so they are usable. But a local one will not harm. I will post the steps for magazines later today so you know how to add for next time as well. :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 18:28, 11 October 2020 (EDT)

== Needful Things ==

Hello. I had to reject your submission, as a record for [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?23578 the 1992 printing] of {{t|1481|Needful Things}} already exists, so that one should have been updated instead of creating a duplicate. In addition, there were a number of other issues with your submisisons:

* ISBN needed to be in IBSN-10 format. As a recommendation, if you notice a yellow warning when you submit an edit, go back (using your browser's back button), correct the error and submit again. Then you can go to your '[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/myrecent.cgi?0+N My Pending Edits]', and cancel the erroneous submission.

* The 10-digit ISBN (045057458X) is not the catalog ID. It should not have been entered there.

* Publisher should have been the standard '[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/publisher.cgi?11 New English Library]'. You may want to double-check that it is indeed 'New English Library', Goodreads only has Hodder & Stoughton. Note that the use of imprint / publisher format (as in 'New English Library / Hodder and Stoughton') is permitted. However, for well-known imprints the shorter form of only the imprint name is used - which is the case here.

* The [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/107291.Needful_Things Goodreads ID = 107291] should be entered in its own designated External ID field. The GoodreadsID are the numbers in the URL. The notes should read 'Data from Goodreads as of yyyy-mm-dd' or something similar.

* The [https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1416690 data source for the cover art credit (Comicartfans.com)] should be added to the notes.

* Finally, when editing an existing record, you can also upload the cover if it's missing (let me know if you need an explanation how to do so).

Will you give it another try? I hope this is clear. If not, do not hesitate to ask further clarification here or over at the [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/ISFDB:Help_desk Help Desk]. Regards, [[User:MagicUnk|MagicUnk]] 08:54, 21 October 2020 (EDT)

OK I found the link you talked about. I should have gone to the edit screen for THAT book, correct? At least that is what vI have just done. There in the pub notes I added the cover artist credit art link to comicartfans. Its not the proper html code as I need a bit (lot) more practice there. I added Chris Moore as the artist (comicartfans). External ID is Goodreads using 107291 (number in html link). Goodreads shows the original pub date as Oct 1991. It is listed as 1991-00-00. Is the correct format 1991-10-00 or 1991-00-10? I have a picture of the cover but I do need to know how that is done. Sorry for all of the mistakes, I am quite new to this. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 15:22, 22 October 2020 (EDT)

: 1991-10-00 - always year-month-day. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:49, 22 October 2020 (EDT)

Submission page shows Disambiguated Artist. I find 2 Chris Moore  (Chris Moore and Chris Moore in error) Not sure how to distinguish between the two on the edit page. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 15:29, 22 October 2020 (EDT)

: Don't worry about it - it is just a warning that there may be a different artist with the same name (to make you double check that you specified the correct one). In this case, you have the correct one. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:49, 22 October 2020 (EDT)

:: Yup, looks alright to me. You can do a follow-up edit where you adjust the date (change it to 1991-10-00), and upload the cover (make sure that the picture is no larger than 600 pixels high, press 'upload cover scan', right-click on the uploaded picture and 'Copy image address', finally, that image address goes into the Image URL field of the publication). Give it a try, I'd say :) [[User:MagicUnk|MagicUnk]] 12:27, 23 October 2020 (EDT)

OK I uploaded a 600p high screen shot as we do not have Goodreads permission.  This cover is from 92 so I did not change date. I do not know if the original pub date of 91-10-00 had the same cover. Where did you find the cover price? I looked everywhere. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 17:14, 23 October 2020 (EDT)

:For the date, I was merely referring to Annie's example, so 1992 is good. For what the price is concerned, that was entered by Ahasuerus. You can see that [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?2176552 here]. I don't know where he got the price from. For what the cover is concerned. You uploaded the image correctly, but forgot to copy the link into the publication record. I've done that for you - have a look [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?23578 here]. : Kinda. Start from the page where you uploaded the page. In this case [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Image:BKTG08072.jpg here]. Click on the image itself and copy the path from your browser. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 20:12, 25 October 2020 (EDT)

Hello,

Hello,

So how is [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?4898001 this submission] different from [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?580243 the book we have]? If it is because of the and/& and you had verified the title page, just fix the book we have. I find it useful to search by ISBN before I add new books - often we have an incomplete record (or sometimes complete) that can be completed. Thanks! :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 01:12, 2 February 2021 (EST)
+
Regarding [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5241586 this cover]. Please upload it again using the "Upload new cover scan" link in the book. That allows us to cross-link a bit if we want/need to (that's why you had a yellow warning message :) ). Thanks! [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 10:38, 1 March 2022 (EST)

: Hi Annie, I try  to search the data base by title and author before I add anything new. I guess I missed this one so let it go to the dumpster [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 13:46, 2 February 2021 (EST)

:: I find an ISBN search to be more effective -- less likely to be caught in the "and/&" discrepancy. Rejected this one now -- you can edit the other one. Thanks! [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 13:53, 2 February 2021 (EST)

== Allison’s Defeat ==

I approved it but a few fixes were needed:

* We add dots and spaces between initials of authors regardless of how the cover/title page styles them unless we have a positive proof that an author uses a different punctuation.

* When the publisher is CreateSpace and there is no real publisher on Look Inside or elsewhere, use the name of the author as publisher. We treat CreateSpace as a printer :) In this case, Look inside of the 2017 editions shows that the 2012 edition is from Alpira Media.

* Please add a note on sources. If you use Amazon, put in "Data from Amazon.com as of currentdate" (replace currentdate with the date).

* "pb" is mass market paperback. Anything else, including the new tall mass market paperbacks is "tp". If you see 5x8 inches, it will always be a "tp" :)

* Please do NOT add the cover before the book is approved. I know it means another step but when you just put it somewhere on the wiki, it may be lost during a backup or be replaced by mistake. So wait for the book to be approved and then use the Upload Cover button and then update the book to link them.

The result is [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?821093 here]. Let me know if you have any questions. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 01:22, 2 February 2021 (EST)

Dots on initials.. Check

CreateSpace = author.. Check

OK I see what you mean by "Look Inside". Never thought about looking for stuff there. Thanks!!
+
: Hi Annie, I thought that is what I did.  If I remember I went to the page and selected "upload new cover" then moved the new link to the page.
 +
: If not, I just did it. It said it already existed but I told it to save. I did not sub the new link since the words would be the same. Obviously I am not doing something right. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 13:27, 1 March 2022 (EST)
 +
:: All good [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Image:BNTHNGHTMR1987.jpg now]. I suspect that last time you changed "Destination filename:" in the upload form - thus the weird tag :) One more thing left here - when the image is already there and not by you, you need to edit the Web page and replace the previous uploader name with yours - it is always a manual step - if you see the "already exist" warning, you need to go edit that post upload. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 13:31, 1 March 2022 (EST)

I try to put links to my book and cover artist in my notes to the Moderator. In this case it was Amazon and Deviantart. Is this not where to put this info??
+
::: OK a question. There are two versions of this book. One has the Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone title in Black and the other in Red. Other than that, the covers look alike. ISFDB has the black letters. The copy I found has red letters. This version is shown on Amazon. It has the same ISBN-10: 0140322388 as the black but fewer pages (256 red vs 400 Blk (per ISFDB data base but black version on ebay has same 256 pg count)). I find both versions on Ebay (US). At least one of the ebay listings with black says it was published in England. None of the other Black or any of the red say, just that they are in English. I found back sides of both versions and they are also the same. (UK, Aust, NZ & Can pricing).

I used pb because that what Amazon was calling it, but I will make a note that 5x8 is tp
+
:::: So... if there are two covers and thus two editions, we want both. It is possible that the ISBN was reused but the covers were different in the different countries. If that is the case, clone for that second one. If not - you may just note the difference in the notes. The 400 pages is the pre-loader from somewhere -- and it is possible that the cover may be a preliminary one. So... do some more digging - if you think there are indeed two books, submit the second one ;) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:23, 1 March 2022 (EST)

I will try to remember about the cover. My other current submissions already have the cover uploaded.

::* Open a new page under your own User page where you want to archive your older messages and go to its Talk (or start from there directly). Just go to your talk page [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7 here] and add the new page name at the bar (I added "/Archive2017-2021" after some fumbling). Edit that page.

::* Open your Talk page for editing and move the old messages to the new page. Save the new page.
 +
::* Add the new page address to the Archives section I started above under your Welcome (I leave the welcome in place as it has useful things - if you want to move it out to the archived page - go ahead).

::* Save the old/regular Talk page. All done. When the page gets too large again, or at the start of each year if you prefer or even more often, you can do the same -- create a new archive page, move messages, add the archive page to your list of archived pages.

: IF Amazon calls in paperback, we call it tp. If Amazon calls is Mass Market Paperback, it is most likely a "pb" here (except these tall/premium ones...):) I know... a bit confusing until you get used to it - but think of "tp" as the default paperback format :)
+
:::: You were missing a step :) I added an explanation. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:23, 1 March 2022 (EST)
: Careful with look inside though. For example in this case it was showing the 2017 edition even if Amazon had the 2012 there. But the publisher info for both was there so it worked out. If it was not, we would have used the author name. :) But yep - it is a useful place to look for things like this :)

: The sources for the art go into the notes field - it is visible for anyone who finds the record - see what I did in this one. So yes - the link in the moderator note is fine but we need the source visible as well.

==  new page archive  ==

I just submitted Shadowcastle by Michael Gray. I did not find the title or isbn in the database. And Michael Gray did not have this title listed. My source Amazon and Archive have an isbn different from everyone else (Goodreads, Abebooks etc.)but you can see the isbn in the book at archive.org. Hopefully I have the notes correct. I made note that it was distributed by Random House but TSR is on the cover. Like all robots, I crave input!! [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 16:49, 2 February 2021 (EST)
+
At bottom of page uder views click on EDIT  Create a new section "== name ==". Note this looks like code so copy and paste old archive name then rename.  New item will appear in Contents square. I assume you then open new section and old section in seperate windows and copy-paste stuff from old to new section. Then save both.
 +
: Nope - this will just add a new entry here on this page... which was only needed that first time so you have an Archives section to collect your Archi links. You need a brand new page. You do that by adding the new name of the page on the address bar - where it says <nowiki>http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7</nowiki>, you make this <nowiki>http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7/Archive2</nowiki> or whatever you want to call it. NOW you edit that one and copy stuff into it. Once you are done, you go and edit the Archives section above to add the link to the new page so you do not lose the link to it. Let me know if that makes more sense. And my offer is always here - if you rather not deal with that, just ping me when you need an archive and I will be happy to help. :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:19, 1 March 2022 (EST)
 +
::  OK I see where if I take the <nowiki>http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7</nowiki> g\page and add something <nowiki>http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7/test</nowiki> it created a page that says "You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet."  I see where I can edit and add stuff then I can save that page. What I don't understand is how I create the link in the archive section.
 +
I see that I would need to edit the Archives section. I see there is a link saying Archive2017-2021 and if I open that it leads to a page ending in Archive2017-2021. When adding books, please keep in mind our standardization rules:
 +
* We standardize capitalization (so "from" is always spelled with small letters unless it is the first word in a title or subtitle)
 +
* Authors with two initials always get a space between the two initials.

I've fixed it [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?886011 here]. You also had the wrong Goodreads ID -- [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/860425 this] is definitely a different book. I am also not sure where the date 2005-09-05 came from - both GR and Amazon (which are all your sources) have 2005-09-30 :) All that is fixed. I'd also recommend to use Amazon.com and not just Amazon so it is clear which of the 16 Amazons you are sourcing from (as they may have different data) and I added the price as Amazon did have the list price. Let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns with these :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 20:54, 4 March 2022 (EST)

:PS: I also added the series and dated the synopsis [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?2997777 here]. When copying synopsis or notes from an online source, always add a date - unlike books, sites change so dating when we grabbed the data is useful (Same reason you date the publication notes the way you did it there). :::: No worries - that's why we have the second set of eyes system. You can look for books based on an artist or author or topic or just see something randomly - we want it. I wish we could have all books but we don't so any missing books are welcome to join us. :)
 +
:::: "Creation House" - if they are credited inside of the book as publisher, yes. Or you can use the Author name as we do with some of the "publishing platforms". As we have it [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/publisher.cgi?1511 here], you can as well use it - but if there is access to a title/copyright page, check what is actually credited.
 +
:::: Alexander von Ness - The operative word is "design". Unless there is also credit for art, he gets only a note (and yes, it is a slippery road and today's technology can make the distinction meaningless but... for now design credit means no coverart :)
 +
:::: Tracy Higley - So you add the book as NewPub by Tracy Higley and decide which one is going to be the canonical (take a look at their other books to see which is used more often) and then pseudonym/variant accordingly. If you need any help, do let me know. If the later name is the canonical, the dating of the parent titles will need some adjusting but ignore that for now - let's get the books in and connected and we can deal with that later. :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 17:13, 5 March 2022 (EST)

I just found quite a few of Russian books added by you where you added a translation into the transliteration field. The field is for transliteration - representing the non-Latin characters with Latin characters and not for translating the words in English. If you are not sure how to transliterate a specific language, just leave the fields empty and someone will fix them later. In addition the artist was credited in English - which will only be valid if the artist's canonical name is in English and they are credited based on secondary sources only and we know the are not credited in the book. I am fixing all books where the cover art was by [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?328408 this artist]. == Importing titles ==
:::: Depends on what kinds of links they are. Stores and collections with unstable URLs - keep them to the moderator notes. Things like Wikipedia, library sources that we have no external IDs for, publisher sites, author sites pages and so on - these can go into the web Pages. But check what we have as external ID as well - Goodreads, OCLC, LCCN, various international libraries and bibliographies, ASIN (for ebooks and for 979 ISBN paperbacks; no Amazon links go in the Web links AND if the ASIN does not start with B, it is an ISBN10 so it does not get added as an ASIN either)) and a lot more are added as external IDs (which produce links when possible (the Reginalds do not for example)) and not in the webpages. And for cases where it is a big page (another bibliography) where there is data for a lot of books, not just this one, you add them in the proper notes (with html a tags) - the web pages are for links that are for this book, not that may contain things about this book. Hope this makes sense. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 22:50, 21 February 2021 (EST)

: If you enter an ISBN-13 (for books after 2007) the ISBN-10 gets auto-created for the record - you see it in brackets after the ISBN-13. The same way around when you enter an ISBN-10 for books before 2007: the ISBN-13 gets auto-created for the record - you see it in brackets after the ISBN-10. ::Besides what I have listed above, one other item I see is that on the Amazon.fr site where it lists the title as Le roman familial de freud Poche, the cover shown is La trilogie de l'espace. If you click the "Look Inside" it shows the 2022 Milady version of La trilogie de l'espace. I checked world Cat and it has ISBN 978-2228900027 also matching Le roman familial de freud Poche. So I am inclined to agree that Amazon.fr screwed up and I fell for it. Hi.  I processed your submission adding Tony Roberts as the artist for {{P|38555|The Dome in the Forest}}, and there were a few things I wanted to make you aware of:
+
== Problemi di Tempo ==

* Unless it's the artist's account, we generally treat secondary credits on sites such as tumblr, pinterest, and seller sites as noteworthy but not authoritative, and we would not add or change an artist credit based solely on such sources. We would record that information in the pub notes, where they could help someone with future research.
+
I approved [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5584078 this submission]. There were two small errors in the the [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?3133688 Italian] title.
* That said, since we have contact information for Tony Roberts, I sent him email, and he confirmed that it is his work. That's quite authoritative.  So I accepted your change and...
+
* Rather than "Translated by Artori Veri" please use the translator template <nowiki>{{Tr|Artori Veri}}</nowiki>.
* ... When adding information that is from anywhere other than the publication itself, the source of that information needs to be recorded in the pub notes, not only in a note to the moderator (which helps the moderator process the submission but does not become part of the entry's data). I have added a note, so just something to keep in mind for the future.
+
* The variant title should have the same length as the parent.
* If a publication has any Primary Verifiers, ISFDB etiquette/policy asks that you notify the Primary Verifier of any changes related to the book's data, by posting a note on their talk page (or following any instructions found there). If you are adding information, it is ok to submit your additions and to do the notification in parallel. If you are altering or removing any information, you should ask first and only submit your changes if the verifier concurs. This publication has a verifier, so I left [[User_talk:AliHarlow#Artist_credit_for_The_Dome_in_the_Forest|a note]] covering both your addition of the credit and my addition to the pub notes.  Again, just something to keep in mind for the future.
+

: Looks like you knew to use the translator template, the one I corrected must have been an aberration. You have incorrectly dated the variants with the year of parent titles. The variants are dated by their first occurrence. Hello. Something's not quite right with [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?932196 this publication] if you ask me. If it's Contents consists of several novels by the same author, by definition it -has- to be an OMNIBUS, not a COLLECTION. But I doubt it should be considered anything but a NOVEL. I suggest to remove the Prologo, Prima parte, ... Quinta parte novel records from the Contents and only keep "La doppia accia egli UFO" as the sole title. Add the information about the sections of the novel (assuming that that is what these parte are) into the Notes. If you do it that way, you can variant to the original title ("Miracle Visitors") without having the yellow warning. I have had to reject [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5017485 this submission]. ISBN numbers encode the publisher. An ISBN starting with 0-00- is a book published by HarperCollins (including its various prior names and imprints). An ISBN starting with with 0-399- is a book published by Putnam. {{P|311026|This record}} is correctly identified as a Collins edition based on the ISBN. The only issue was the image (Amazon images are not necessarily reliable and can change over time) which I have updated to the correct one. A verified record for the Putnam edition is already in the database {{P|154391|here}}. By the way, Amazon dates for older pubs are unreliable. They will often put January 1st when they mean they don't know the month and day. Thanks. --&nbsp;[[User:JLaTondre|JLaTondre]] ([[User talk:JLaTondre#top|talk]]) 09:07, 27 June 2021 (EDT)

Concerning your recent submissions commented above, and [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5592257 this one], make sure to add the translator to the title records. Also, for each of these publications, check for duplicate titles. For example, I parassiti della mente has two title records - see here: https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/edit/find_pub_dups.cgi?937644. I've left them as-is, but you need to determine whether these two were translated by the same translator. If that's the case, merge both titles. ::No, it should be a COLLECTION, as the constituting pieces are also collections (actually, a story and a collection). A story and a collection put together in one volume doesn't make it an OMNIBUS. Hi. When we have a publication such as {{P|744905|Grey Ronin}}, where we can't find any sort of artist credit or signature from the book but we determine the credit from elsewhere, the source of the credit needs to be documented in the publication notes (which are permanent and are displayed as part of the publication record), not just in a note to the moderator (which is only part of the submission and does not appear in the publication record).  Contrast with {{P|736624|Prophet's Journey}}, where you found it on his website, but Look Inside shows us the book explicitly attributes the cover art to him.  In the latter case, there is no need to credit the secondary source.  I added a note to ''Grey Ronin'', so just something to keep in mind for the future. Did you plan to merge the French titles with their pre-existing counterparts? Or did you plan to turn them into new VTs because the translations were revised by Pierre-Paul Durastanti? :Actually since this was over a year ago, I had forgotten about this. I don't have a list of who originally translated what, so I would assume it would be best to give credit to Durastanti. Input is always welcome. Also what is a VT? A few things on this one:
+
== '979' ISBN ==
* No need to say that it is a Spanish version of something - that's what the variant will do for you :)

* We have a template for translators and we need this up on the Title level (adding it on the pub level is fine but it is mandatory for the title level). I fixed the one in the pub notes and added it on the title notes as well.

* For Spanish books, LTF is a very good source once you get an ISBN from Goodreads or OCLC - I added the External ID (it also has the contents which now can be added and varianted if one wants to). It also unearthed the fact that there is a publication series :)

* The note for the cover attribution belongs in the notes.

* I added a cover - you can replace it with ISFDB hosted one if you planned to :)

The result is [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?860191 here]. Let me know if you have any questions/concerns.

We need to add the ASIN for any publication with an ISBN13 beginning with 979. I added them to [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?953471 this one] and [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?953464 this one]. To see why, compare the result using the Amazon links menu (which uses the ISBN) and the ASIN link I added to the publications. thanks, [[User:Scifibones|<b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small>]] 15:07, 31 May 2023 (EDT)

: Or any other books where the ASIN starts with a B. Sometimes, rarely but it happens, paper books with 978 ISBNs don't form their ASINs properly (aka matching ISBN10) and end up with B-ASINs instead. It seems to be an error in the processing side on Amazon but these books behave as if they were 979 books so... we want the ASIN. * Seeing as this is still a stand-alone, I still need to "Make This Title a Variant" adding Record # 2924575 to Record # 50961. (or would it go with Record # 37356)

* OK I see where it says Éxitos but how do you know it is a series??

:: Because we already have it in the DB and because I had worked with the LTF interface before :)  [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 17:45, 29 September 2021 (EDT)

* Your info was new to me for the translator. I made a screen shot.

* I assume whenever I create a new Novel, Omnibus and such, the title page is also created??  But to get the Translator over to it you need to set up the pub page with { {Tr|NAME} }??  (no spaces, I just did cause it went to a link for a blank non-setup template)

:: Correct. When you create a New publication, it creates two records - a title one and a publication one. Look at the screen when you are creating it - there are two notes fields - one higher on the page (the "title note") and one lower (the pub note). We need the translator in the title note one. It is <nowiki>{{Tr|name}}</nowiki>. It resolves in a record Notes but NOT here in the Wiki. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 17:45, 29 September 2021 (EDT)

* There are 2 other paperbacks, 1 Kindle and 1 ebook with this same name and book cover by Plaza y Janés from 2017 (Goodreads) but not in LTF.

:: They don't have everything and they rarely have ebooks :) You can add the Goodreads ones and so on - I was just pointing to a useful place for more information about Spanish books.

* Finally if I wanted to add the titles in the collection, would I use the English or Spanish names? LTF looks to show both. These would go under the Pub Title, using the editor go to Regular Titles and selecting Add Titles. I see in LTF, the stories are in a different order with no page number and there are only 9 compared to Record # 149281 [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 17:32, 29 September 2021 (EDT)

:: Spanish names. Then when they are approved you variant to the English ones. See [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?381577 the German one] to see how it looks (if you click Edit, you can inspect to see what is inside and how it is added). The English names will come when you variant the title records [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1406919 this one]. The order per language often differs. And some translations drop a story or 2 - when that happened, the notes on the title level should be explaining that.

Hello Aardvark7. I have corrected your edit [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?496677 here], where you had added a book price to the record. What nooSFere indicates as "F11", which indeed appears on the back cover, is the price category, not the price in French francs (which would be impossible, anyway, in 2004, when euros were already in use). In this case, "F" stands for "Folio", the name of the pub series. FYI, a price in French francs would have been indicated as "11,00 F", for example. Hope it makes sense. A quick note about [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5803288 this submission]. The submitted publication date of this epub was 2002-08-01 based on what the Amazon.com record currently says. It got me curious because there were very few epubs back in 2002. I examined the book using Amazon's Look Inside and found a 13-digit e-ISBN printed on the copyright page. Since 13-digit ISBNs did not exist in 2002, it's clearly a later edition. My guess is that the data entry clerk looked at the copyright page, saw that the first printing was in August 2002 and used "2002-08-01" without thinking. I have changed the pub date to 0000-00-00 and updated the Note field. Thanks for working on these pubs! [[User:Ahasuerus|Ahasuerus]] ([[User talk:Ahasuerus|talk]]) 21:54, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

== Adding future books ==

Hello,

While technically [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?862181 this] is in scope, this book can only be found on Goodreads. They get their feed directly from Amazon so books which are cancelled and removed from Amazon are often retained on Goodreads. It is not a very good practice to add ''future'' books based on Goodreads records alone - that creates a lot of vaporware - especially when the book is not trackable anywhere else. Everyone else reports only an ebook. Is there another source showing that this paperback is really coming out in December?

PS: "pb" is used for American style mass market paperbacks. The self-published books are almost always 5x8 inches or bigger which will make them a "tp" - not a pb. Even if this one comes out, chances are it will be a "tp". Thanks! [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 19:42, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

: Yeah, I debated on adding this. In the future I only plan to add books with dates past the current. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 22:21, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

:: Future books are fine as long as we have somewhat reliable source for it - publisher site, someone taking orders for the book. Not that these do not slip occasionally but they have better chances. I rarely add books more than 60 days out simply because they tend to move too much (we allow 90 days pre-release). And with the delays I am seeing everywhere on October-December books (paper shortages apparently so some publishers just pushed the whole release back), even 60 days out is a bit too optimistic... I'll keep an eye on it when December comes - it may surprise us all...:) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 22:26, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

::: Been adding a numbers of books by independent author Shannon Pemrick with covers by Jackson Tjota. I can find them on her website so that's a good sign! Plus it lists a number of sites to purchase them from besides Amazon. [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 22:32, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

:::: I am sure the books are coming out. The question is if the paper version you added will come out in December or if it will be ebook only for awhile - the date matches the ebook perfectly and I had seen Amazon goofing up this way, fixing the record and leaving GR in that state... Thus my note :) Thanks for adding the books! :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 22:38, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

::::: I do have a question. Can I assume that just because a book has an ASIN or ISBN, that does not necessarily mean it will come out? Also are there good resources to check these numbers out at??  [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 10:45, 13 October 2021 (EDT)

:::::: Correct - having an ISBN or ASIN assigned does not mean the book will make it out at all, let alone on the date it is initially supposed to or with the exact title it is supposed to. Bigger publishers have better data early on and you learn how much to trust them how far out. Self-published and small ones? It can be interesting.

:::::: ISBNs are paid for. So they don't get completely cancelled too often although it happens. However, they can get reassigned OR delayed (sometimes for years) so just because an ISBN seems assigned to something does not necessarily mean it will come out when it says it will. Practice had shown that most ISBNs that are going to be cancelled or moved do that before the last 90 days pre-publication (supply chain and so on). Thus our limit on 90 days.  Although there are still exceptions - things happen. And dates move - for example Macmillan rescheduled a big chunk of their near-future ISBNs for 2-3 weeks later this month (very annoying) with almost no warning so I had been chasing these across their imprints.

:::::: ASINs are Amazon numbers - they assign one to anything they want to sell. So if a book is delayed/cancelled/pulled out before its publication date, they just remove the ASIN as if it never existed. Once published, they remove them when not available but there is trace elsewhere. But if it is not on ANY Amazon (the 16 have different data and can have different list of dead ASINs) and it is in the future, it is a dead ASIN. The book may be coming out - but Amazon will assign a new ASIN.

:::::: If you are asking "where can we check if a future book will come out" the answer is nowhere. We hedge our bets based on experience and what we had seen before. I had been adding the new and forthcoming books to the site in the last few years so I kinda know the patterns of most publishers. As a rule - the more different sites/stores report an ISBN or a book, the more likely is that it will be out; on the other hand if a book is supposed to be out in 2 weeks but still has no cover anywhere or seems to be very limited on a search, something is off and I would wait it out to see if it will come out. Hope this makes some sense. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 16:00, 13 October 2021 (EDT)

::::::: And here I thought ASIN had something to do with audio/ebooks since that is where I have been seeing them. So its one big guessing game! Fun..Fun..  Thank you for the info.    Oh is there a place where I can find what all of the Externals IDs stand for?? [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 18:33, 13 October 2021 (EDT)

:::::::: They are always there on ebooks and audio books when sourcing/checking from/on Amazon because the rule for ISBN10 only applies to paper books (Amazon assigns ISBN10 as ASIN to paper books. Those we do not record as ASINs because the standard Amazon links work). So anything that is not a paper book, gets an ASIN which starts with B - those we record. Now - there is the problem of the 979- ISBNs - these do not have an ISBN10 anymore (978 ones convert cleanly; 979 are... new). So for them, we now have ASINs again in addition to the ISBN even on paper books. Welcome to the fun!

:::::::: More or less. Once you get used to how things operate, the guesses are more educated than before that. Although for most of 2020 I was literally checking daily to see what went where and I was adding only 2 weeks ahead of time if that - things were moving too much. We are mostly back to normal - occasional craziness like the Macmillan delays but I keep an eye on news from the industry and tend to slow down the future books when I hear about delays (like just now - which also explains the Macmillans somewhat). But the less known a publisher is, the more likely is for them to not publish - and even Amazon knows that - like the edition we started the conversation with - Amazon probably decided it is too uncertain and they did not want to accept pre-orders so they pulled it (or they really messed up). But the big publishers pre-load on Amazon months in advance; the smaller one do it closer to publishing day. I have a "go check all the books from this month to see if they came out" step that I do when I have a minute - usually a few months after the month is done. We still miss some but that tends to catch most.

:::::::: The question mark next to the IDs on the Edit pages opens [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php?title=Template:PublicationFields:ExternalIDs this help page]. There are even some notes on what we record and where and how and why :) Please also note that we have a way to record these in publications they do not belong to (for sources for example) - see [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Help:Using_Templates_and_HTML_in_Note_Fields IDs in notes]. == Adding additional formats for chapbooks ==

Hello,

When adding a new format for chapbooks (as you did for [Prophecy Tested: An Oracle's Path Short this one], use ClonePub and not AddPub. ClonePub will bring the story with you (and the coverart if you tell it so with the appropriate checkbox. If you use AddPub, you need to import the story (and the cover) as a second step. As a general rule:
+
== A Way Home ==
* Novels that have no extra essays around them and not covers/interior art and empty collections/anthologies : either ClonePub or AddPub will work

* Chapbooks, omnibuses, collections and anthologies with contents, novels that have extra essays or covers you want to bring with you into the new copy - use ClonePub.

I personally use AddPub only when either there is nothing to clone (firts chapbook for a story that was here in a different way for example) or I am dropping essays (new introductions and so on for novels). Otherwise I go for ClonePub. But you will find your own rules based on how you use the site. I will fix these two chapbooks now - just keep that in mind for the next ones. I will also merge the three coverartsc you created. - when you type an author name for a cover, you are creating a new record :) [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 01:50, 23 October 2021 (EDT)

: One more small thing: If the BN ID is the ISBN13, we do not record that as a BN ID :) ASIN/ISBN10 and BN/ISBN13 are the standard for paper books so you put the ISBN in the ISBN field and then do not fill ASIN and BN. You fill them if they are different. We have a link on the left to both Barnes&Nobles and to Amazon based on ISBN13/ISBN10. You only use ASIN/BN if the value is different. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 01:55, 23 October 2021 (EDT)

: OK I most likely entered this as a novel. What is the difference between a novel and a chapbook? Never mind, I looked. Its a chapbook becouse it is only one very short story. Is there a general rule as to when a story goes from short story to novel? (page count?) [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 15:13, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

:: Word count. 40,000 words are needed for a novel. In modern books, the break so somewhere around 150 pages but can be as high as 250 or as low as 70 based on the fonts. [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:22, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

:::Ah! nothing like a rule that is clear as mud! Never seen any source give a work count and 99% of these items I do not have a copy!! Fortunately this is the first time I have come upon one of these. And my fault, I didn't notice the BN being the same as the ISBN. I was using it as a 2nd source that the book actually came out [[User:Aardvark7|aardvark7]] 15:28, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

::::So add BN As a source to the pub notes. Most paperbacks won’t have separate BN number. :)

:::: It is the Hugo/Nebula rule. The rule is as clear as it can be - there is nothing more definitive than the number of words in a text. It is the sources that are not clear.  We are a speculative fiction dB, remember? :) For lengths, Kobo Rakuten can be useful - their estimates for length on eBooks are decent (under 36K always means too short for a novel; over 44K is always novel - in the middle you play it by the ear). Or audiobooks lengths (under 4 hours cannot be a novel, over 5 is almost guaranteed to be a novel - over 6 is absolutely a novel). And counting the words on a page from a preview estimating the word count and interpolating accounting for empty pages and so on. When you are in the middle? Hit the internet and blogs to see what people call it and if someone counted (sometimes someone does).  [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 16:01, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

Hello! I hold your submission to add ''Jonny Duddle'' as the cover artist of this book [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?548999 Harrius Potter et Camera Secretorum]. I found another book [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?402925Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets] in which the cover artist is ''Cliff Wright''. Who is the correct artist? Welcome!

Hello, Aardvark7, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:37, 25 November 2017 (EST)

On the Wheel

Hello,

I removed the BN number from here because it was the ISBN. When the BN number is ISBN13 or the ASIN number is ISBN-10, we don't record them in the two external IDs - as they are in the ISBN field and we already have live links to them based on the ISBN in the left menu. Annie 20:06, 4 February 2022 (EST)

Not a problem aardvark7 11:15, 5 February 2022 (EST)

Matching Amazons

While Amazon.de is not a bad source here, I'd also check Amazon Italy for any Italian books - the different Amazons may have different data (look Inside in one and not in the other, some extra comments or reviews and so on) so I would check all of them and always list the "proper language one" (plus any others that gave me additional info). Just saying :) Annie 17:18, 22 February 2022 (EST)

I was using links from DuckDuckGo to check different sites. Actually most of the info came from Libroco & Book Depository. I thought I added a link to Luca Oleastri's site but it didn't seen to attach. I can across this by accident.

L'impero dei Mizar is on the site as part of record 1493455 Millemondi Estate 1996 as one of the 3 stories. AShould these be linked somehow?? aardvark7 17:30, 22 February 2022 (EST)

Well, you added Amazon.de on an Italian book so I stopped by to mention that Italy has their own Amazon version as well. :)
Merged now. Next time when we already have the novel, instead of using NewPub, you can use AddPub - then we won't need to merge after it is approved :) Annie 17:38, 22 February 2022 (EST)
I was debating, but since it was a story in a book of a different title, I wasn't sure. My link was missing the h in the href. It goes to his page that shows the art and the cover. aardvark7 17:55, 22 February 2022 (EST)
It is a novel in an omnibus (added as an anthology because of a very old obsolete rule - I am looking into how to fix - as the authors need to be different in that case) :) You cannot use ClonePub (because there was no publication with just the novel) but that is what we have AddPub for :) Annie 18:00, 22 February 2022 (EST)
Clone, Add, New. Multiple pages for the same book (Title, the book, the cover). I keep learning how big and complicated this turkey is!! aardvark7 18:05, 22 February 2022 (EST)

Beneath Nightmare Castle

Hello,

Regarding this cover. Please upload it again using the "Upload new cover scan" link in the book. That allows us to cross-link a bit if we want/need to (that's why you had a yellow warning message :) ). Thanks! Annie 10:38, 1 March 2022 (EST)

Hi Annie, I thought that is what I did. If I remember I went to the page and selected "upload new cover" then moved the new link to the page.
If not, I just did it. It said it already existed but I told it to save. I did not sub the new link since the words would be the same. Obviously I am not doing something right. aardvark7 13:27, 1 March 2022 (EST)
All good now. Annie 13:31, 1 March 2022 (EST)
OK a question.
So... if there are two covers and thus two editions, we want both. It is possible that the ISBN was reused but the covers were different in the different countries. If that is the case, clone for that second one. If not - you may just note the difference in the notes. The 400 pages is the pre-loader from somewhere -- and it is possible that the cover may be a preliminary one. So... do some more digging - if you think there are indeed two books, submit the second one ;) Annie 15:23, 1 March 2022 (EST)

One unrelated question. I have a warning saying my page is 77 KB and I should break it up. How do I do this? aardvark7 14:05, 1 March 2022 (EST)

Do you want just a step by step or do you want me to do that for you and give you a step by step? Annie 14:30, 1 March 2022 (EST)
Right now I am recovering from surgery and a bit fumble finger. Could you please step in, then give me a step by step that I can look over?? aardvark7 14:37, 1 March 2022 (EST)
Apparently my fingers were also unhappy with me so sorry for the multiple edits :)
  • Open a new page under your own User page where you want to archive your older messages and go to its Talk (or start from there directly). Just go to your talk page here and add the new page name at the bar (I added "/Archive2017-2021" after some fumbling). Edit that page.
  • Open your Talk page for editing and move the old messages to the new page. Save the new page.
  • Add the new page address to the Archives section I started above under your Welcome (I leave the welcome in place as it has useful things - if you want to move it out to the archived page - go ahead).
  • Save the old/regular Talk page. All done. When the page gets too large again, or at the start of each year if you prefer or even more often, you can do the same -- create a new archive page, move messages, add the archive page to your list of archived pages.
Let me know if I can assist further. Hope your recovery is going well. Annie 14:52, 1 March 2022 (EST)
PS: The link above in Archives will get you to the page but here is the direct link: Archive 2017-2021. Annie 15:02, 1 March 2022 (EST)
OK I just made a new section below this explaining to myself what I think you did. How close am I?? aardvark7 15:14, 1 March 2022 (EST)
You were missing a step :) I added an explanation. Annie 15:23, 1 March 2022 (EST)

new page archive

At bottom of page uder views click on EDIT Create a new section "== name ==". Note this looks like code so copy and paste old archive name then rename. New item will appear in Contents square. I assume you then open new section and old section in seperate windows and copy-paste stuff from old to new section. Then save both.

Nope - this will just add a new entry here on this page... which was only needed that first time so you have an Archives section to collect your Archi links. You need a brand new page. You do that by adding the new name of the page on the address bar - where it says http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7, you make this http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7/Archive2 or whatever you want to call it. :) Annie 15:19, 1 March 2022 (EST)
OK I see where if I take the http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7 g\page and add something http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Aardvark7/test it created a page that says "You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet." I see where I can edit and add stuff then I can save that page. What I don't understand is how I create the link in the archive section.

I see that I would need to edit the Archives section. I see there is a link saying Archive2017-2021 and if I open that it leads to a page ending in Archive2017-2021. Its think link I don't understand how to make. OR Wait.... If I hit edit the archive section there is code(?) saying "((User_talk:Aardvark7/Archive2017-2021|Archive2017-2021))". This is the link? and if my new page is named Archive 2021-23 I would add to this section "((User_talk:Aardvark7/Archive2021-23|Archive2021-23))". where the ( are brackets. Is that it? aardvark7 15:39, 1 March 2022 (EST)

Yep - that's wiki code so that if we ever move (to https for example), these links are still valid. Just copy what I left there one more time and replace Archive2017-2021|Archive2017-2021 with the name of the new page you created (test|test) for example. The thing before the | is the actual page. The thing after the | is the text appearing on the page here (so you can do "test|And this is my test page" instead of "test|test". If you look at my own page, you will see my multiple archives :) Annie 15:44, 1 March 2022 (EST)
OK! You can teach an old dog new tricks!! Thanks! Now am I opening a can of worms with my Black vs red cover?? aardvark7 15:51, 1 March 2022 (EST)
Not really - if they exist, there is a difference somewhere and we want to know about it :) Go do more research :) Annie 15:59, 1 March 2022 (EST)
Thanks...... aardvark7 16:13, 1 March 2022 (EST)

Capitalization and authors with multiple initials

When adding books, please keep in mind our standardization rules:

  • We standardize capitalization (so "from" is always spelled with small letters unless it is the first word in a title or subtitle)
  • Authors with two initials always get a space between the two initials.

I've fixed it here. You also had the wrong Goodreads ID -- this is definitely a different book. Let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns with these :) Annie 20:54, 4 March 2022 (EST)

PS: I also added the series and dated the synopsis here. When copying synopsis or notes from an online source, always add a date - unlike books, sites change so dating when we grabbed the data is useful (Same reason you date the publication notes the way you did it there). Thanks for adding this book :) Annie 20:59, 4 March 2022 (EST)
My mind must have been somewhere. No idea where my Goodreads came from or the date. I was debating on the initials. There is also a Kindle version and a newer print & Kindle with different covers. I will play with those and try to take my time. Found this by looking for art for Dave Seeley. aardvark7 10:38, 5 March 2022 (EST)
OK I have a couple of questions. The current cover has 2 Kindle versions. One is by Realms and the other (1st one out) by Creation House, a self publishing firm. I see them listed as a publishers so I can use them, correct?? Also the second cover in the Amazon Look Inside says "Cover Design by Alexander von Ness". His website https://www.nessgraphica.com says "book covers on steroids". Reading the about me I can't make up my mind, is he also the artists? What do you think? Also in this cover version T. L. Higley is now using Tracy Higley. aardvark7 10:54, 5 March 2022 (EST)
No worries - that's why we have the second set of eyes system. You can look for books based on an artist or author or topic or just see something randomly - we want it. I wish we could have all books but we don't so any missing books are welcome to join us. :)
"Creation House" - if they are credited inside of the book as publisher, yes. Or you can use the Author name as we do with some of the "publishing platforms". As we have it here, you can as well use it - but if there is access to a title/copyright page, check what is actually credited.
Alexander von Ness - The operative word is "design". Unless there is also credit for art, he gets only a note (and yes, it is a slippery road and today's technology can make the distinction meaningless but... for now design credit means no coverart :)
Tracy Higley - So you add the book as NewPub by Tracy Higley and decide which one is going to be the canonical (take a look at their other books to see which is used more often) and then pseudonym/variant accordingly. If you need any help, do let me know. If the later name is the canonical, the dating of the parent titles will need some adjusting but ignore that for now - let's get the books in and connected and we can deal with that later. :) Annie 17:13, 5 March 2022 (EST)
I'll check to see if there is a Look Inside for it. I will also look to see if Higley has a web site with other books. Goodreads may give me a hint since I thought I saw that they were a Goodreads author. aardvark7 17:18, 5 March 2022 (EST)
Even if they are not, Goodreads and OCLC tend to be good options to see what else they have published (unless they have their own site). And Amazon can also be useful for that. If you cannot decide, pick one - we can always reverse :) Annie 17:26, 5 March 2022 (EST)

Cover Artist Rafael Lopez Espi

Hello Aardvark7, I've seen that you have added Rafel Lopez Espi as the cover artist for Die Vampirkutsche. What is the source of your information? Thanks, John. JLochhas 04:20, 23 July 2022 (EDT)

The owner of the original art has it up for sale at https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1794947

Sorry I should have put you on copy aardvark7 09:56, 23 July 2022 (EDT)

No worries about that. It would have been nice, though, if you had added to the publication's notes and also updated the artwork record. I've meanwhile taken care of that and also adjusted the artist's name to his canonical name. Thanks. JLochhas 10:19, 23 July 2022 (EDT)
Do you know about these sites? http://www.gruselromane.de/frames/index.htm .:. https://romanhefte.weebly.com/ .:. http://www.romanhefte-info.de/ .:. They have lots of info on the German books. I am not that up on them but have noticed that there are many of the John Sinclair books not in the DB. aardvark7 20:54, 23 July 2022 (EDT)
Yes, I am aware of the sites, gruselromane.de in particular is no longer maintained and https://gruselroman-forum.de/ has taken over most the material and the users are actively adding. Whilst the publications exist for sure not all of the data is correct, cover credits and publication dates don't always match reality.JLochhas 05:03, 24 July 2022 (EDT)

Vortex ebook

I have this submission on hold. It it is the same as this one. You can add the ISBN and BN link to the existing publication. I'm thinking we will end up standardizing the publisher as 'Catherine A. Wheeler' as more titles are added. John Scifibones 17:26, 19 August 2022 (EDT)

I did them as two items as one is Kindle and one is Nook, 2 different formats of ebooks aardvark7 14:44, 20 August 2022 (EDT)
We only create one record. You can specify the different formats available in the notes. John Scifibones 17:07, 20 August 2022 (EDT)
OK I made a note that the entered title was Kindle and that it was also available as a Nook, so if you want I can or you can kill the other submission aardvark7 17:17, 20 August 2022 (EDT)
You can cancel it. I would still add the BN link. Thanks, John Scifibones 17:57, 20 August 2022 (EDT)

The Transliteration field

I just found quite a few of Russian books added by you where you added a translation into the transliteration field. The field is for transliteration - representing the non-Latin characters with Latin characters and not for translating the words in English. If you are not sure how to transliterate a specific language, just leave the fields empty and someone will fix them later. In addition the artist was credited in English - which will only be valid if the artist's canonical name is in English and they are credited based on secondary sources only and we know the are not credited in the book. I am fixing all books where the cover art was by this artist. If you had done the same for other non-Latin languages, please revisit and/or post them here so I can fix them. Thanks! Annie (talk) 20:09, 10 November 2022 (EST)

My bad. Don't think I have others but will try to watch it in the future. aardvark7 (talk) 11:43, 11 November 2022 (EST)
If you end up adding any more of these, feel free to post on my page with a link to them and I will be happy to help you shape them properly and fix what needs fixing as they are happening. :) Annie (talk) 10:42, 14 November 2022 (EST)
I just happened to find them because of my Pinterest page. Came across the artist, tracked down the books and saw they were not in the data base. This was a rare instance. aardvark7 (talk) 22:04, 15 November 2022 (EST)
Figured that was the case - I’ve seen you working through artists. :) Will sort them out - as long as they are in the DB, we can get them fixed. The offer stands though - if you stumble over another of them, feel free to ask for help (to check them or to assist with adding or anything in between). Annie (talk) 22:09, 15 November 2022 (EST)

Importing titles

Concerning this edit of your, if you want to add missing art records (or any contents title really), you should import the title, instead of editing the pub record and thus creating a duplicate title, which would then afterwards have to be merged with the already-existing one. Importing is one edit, the way you're doing it requires two...
To import, search for the title id you want to import (Title Record #), then display the publication you want to import the title into, and select 'Import Contents' from the left hand menu. I've rejected your submission, and imported the title. See this submission. MagicUnk (talk) 11:29, 25 November 2022 (EST)

Sans concession

Hi, You submitted Sans consession - tome 1 as an English publication, not French - I've corrected that for you (assuming that that's what it needed to be ;)). MagicUnk (talk) 11:37, 25 November 2022 (EST)

My error, you are right it is French, I think i missed the field. aardvark7 (talk) 16:41, 25 November 2022 (EST)

Translator in title record & varianting vs merging

As a reminder, do not forget to add the translator with the tr-template into the notes of the title record. Thanks! MagicUnk (talk) 11:40, 25 November 2022 (EST)
Also, if you have two identical titles that e.g. differ in their dates of publication, then do not variant, but merge instead. Varianting can only be done with translations, or different titles for the same work. If two titles are identical, then merge instead. I've rejected your varianting edit, and merged the titles instead. Result here: Le Dit du sang. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 11:45, 25 November 2022 (EST)

Question IMHO Le Dit du sang record 3103844 needs to be merged with Blood Ties record 849035.

To do this I would go to Record 849035 and select Make this Tital a Variant, then put in record 3103844 as the parent, correct? aardvark7 (talk) 16:40, 25 November 2022 (EST)

Yes, that's the correct way of doing it (apart from the fact that that wouldn't be called 'merged'. It would be called 'varianting' :) MagicUnk (talk) 10:59, 28 November 2022 (EST)

La trilogie de l'espace

There is a publication La trilogie de l'espace You submitted from an Amazon.fr source. The ISBN belongs to "Le roman familial de Freud" by Gabrielle Rubin (OCLC). Your Amazon source here has '2811206469' in its link, that is not an ASIN but the ISBN-10 for this printing. The Look Inside faeture also has a copyright page scan with the ISBN 978-2-8112-0646-8 of the same printing. No extrernal ID entry was found with that assumed erroneous ISBN 978-2228900027. Even google can't find it. Do You have any other source that can verify the existence of that printing? In my opinion this case is an error of Amazon.fr and no real existing publication. --Zapp (talk) 05:57, 9 December 2022 (EST)

This is going to sound horrible but can you tell me what submission number that was?? I don't find it in my pending records and I don't see that title in my Pending, Recent or Rejected files. I see the Milady version on NooSFere, along with a BRAGELONNE version from 2022 but with a different cover & ISBN (ISBN : 979-10-281-2091-7). I also see on the Amazon.fr site, when you click the Look Inside, its showing the Milady 978-2-8112-0646-8 version. If it is alright with you, I would like to modify the Bragelonne version to the 2022 version that is both on NooSFere AND Amazon.fr AND World Cat. aardvark7 (talk) 10:42, 9 December 2022 (EST)
Submission number is 5306426 to be seen on edit history. Go ahead but see the title here. --Zapp (talk) 08:03, 13 December 2022 (EST)
Besides what I have listed above, one other item I see is that on the Amazon.fr site where it lists the title as Le roman familial de freud Poche, the cover shown is La trilogie de l'espace. Like I said above, there is a 2022 Bragelonne version with a totally different cover that I can find on NooSFere AND Amazon.fr AND World Cat. aardvark7 (talk) 14:10, 13 December 2022 (EST)
So put some informations into the notes field. --Zapp (talk) 01:20, 19 December 2022 (EST)

Kane, l'intégrale 2

What are you trying to achieve here? The new title record you are trying to create is exactly the same as the old one... Annie (talk) 11:00, 3 January 2023 (EST)

Well I thought I was hooking it up to Darkness Weaves with Many Shades 5153 but I guess not?!? aardvark7 (talk) 14:05, 3 January 2023 (EST)
You pressed the wrong button. :) The Make Variant page has 2 parts: the top one for connecting to existing titles and the bottom one for creating new parents. When using the top part, you should use the buttons in the middle of the screen, not the ones on the very bottom. Do you want to try again or should I fix it for you? Annie (talk) 15:17, 3 January 2023 (EST)
Well I have already killed the old one and resubmitted. Using the top half of screen, Maybe this time?? aardvark7 (talk) 16:40, 3 January 2023 (EST)
That's the only thing I could have done as well - once submitted, a submission cannot be edited. :) Approved. Don't forget to add a translator to the French title (I can see it is in the publication - we need it up on the title level as well, using the Tr template) :) Annie (talk) 18:02, 3 January 2023 (EST)

Problemi di Tempo

I approved this submission. There were two small errors in the the Italian title.

  • Rather than "Translated by Artori Veri" please use the translator template {{Tr|Artori Veri}}.
  • The variant title should have the same length as the parent.

I corrected this one. I'll approve all the rest of your variants for Terra e Spazio - Volume 4. Will you take care of the rest of the Italian titles? John Scifibones 11:05, 18 February 2023 (EST)

Looks like you knew to use the translator template, the one I corrected must have been an aberration. You have incorrectly dated the variants with the year of parent titles. The variants are dated by their first occurrence. You can fix the date and length of all the titles, with one submission, by editing Terra e Spazio - Volume 4. John Scifibones 11:35, 18 February 2023 (EST)
Sorry I missed the trans template on that one, thought I had them all. You are right, I did think the date was when it 1st came out. And my title source, Urania Mania gave that date. OK I can go back to see what is in the db for early appearances of these title and use those. They are all I have to go on and would that be correct? The ones I have looked at are earlier editions of Urania. Or should I leave that field blank? Also I see the length column, sorry i missed that. Let me know what I should do about the dates and I will fix all at one time. aardvark7 (talk) 16:16, 18 February 2023 (EST)
No apologies necessary, this is why we have the review system. Selecting the publication and using 'Check for Duplicate titles' results in no other translations by 'Artori Veri'. We don't care that there are translations by others, they have their own title records. Date all the stories in this publication 2019-09-00. John Scifibones 17:22, 18 February 2023 (EST)

La doppia faccia degli UFO

Hello. Something's not quite right with this publication if you ask me. MagicUnk (talk) 08:30, 28 February 2023 (EST)

Oh, and by the way, translators must go into the Notes of title records (optional for pub records). MagicUnk (talk) 08:32, 28 February 2023 (EST)

I updated the publication record some more. Now there's only one Contents title, which I've varianted to the original, and I moved the contents info to the Notes. Have a look and let me know if this is OK. The only thing for you to do is to add the translator to title La doppia faccia degli UFO. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 03:16, 3 March 2023 (EST)
OK I just dropped the individual contents and just stated there were parts and a prolog. I see I should have also listed them in the notes. aardvark7 (talk) 12:32, 3 March 2023 (EST)

La terra morente

I've accepted your submission, but changed the title type from NOVEL to SHORT FICTION (corresponds with the original, so assume the same for the Italian translation). Note that 'The Dying Earth' is, in fact, a collection. Am assuming that this is the case for this publication as well? If so, update that Contents record to COLLECTION instead. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 08:40, 28 February 2023 (EST)

Einstein perduto - Nova

I've accepted your submission, but changed type from ANTHOLOGY to OMNIBUS (two Novels from same author). MagicUnk (talk) 08:43, 28 February 2023 (EST)

You wanted to variant an Italian title to a new Italian parent, so I had to reject your submission. What you intended to do was merge the two titles, I guess? Also, are the 1971 and 1973 title both translated by Renato Prinzhofer? (then it's safe to merge) Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 13:56, 28 February 2023 (EST)
I merged the existing Nova title with the new one you've entered. I checked and both editions have the same translator, so are to be the same title record. I've also varianted Einstein perduto to it's English original. Have a look. MagicUnk (talk) 03:38, 3 March 2023 (EST)

Translators

Concerning your recent submissions commented above, and this one, make sure to add the translator to the title records. For La terra morente, see https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/edit/find_pub_dups.cgi?937645, for Einstein perduto - Nova, see https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/edit/find_pub_dups.cgi?937642. MagicUnk (talk) 08:50, 28 February 2023 (EST)

After much searching I finally found a site that listed the translator for the 1977 novel. It was the same as my Urania copy Alfredo Pollini. I have 1) merged the files. 2) added the translator to the 1977 version and 3) added the only cover version I can find for that book.
I've approved your submissions. MagicUnk (talk) 14:01, 28 February 2023 (EST)
For La terra morente you are saying I also need to make this an omnibus, correct? Do I interconnect the two somehow?aardvark7 (talk) 09:43, 28 February 2023 (EST)
No, it should be a COLLECTION, as the constituting pieces are also collections (actually, a story and a collection). A story and a collection put together in one volume doesn't make it an OMNIBUS. What you need to do is check whether La terra morente (the title record of the contents section is actually also a collection). I've made it a bit simpler by disambiguating the 2017 publication (and associated collection title), and updated the Contents title type to COLLECTION. Have a look.
What still needs to be done is to merge the 1994 COLLECTION with the 2017 COLLECTION (don't include the OMNIBUS in the merger, that's a different title altogether), after verifying the translator of the 1994 and 2017 versions are the same - see here: Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 14:01, 28 February 2023 (EST)
You actually just confirmed that both COLLECTION titles can be merged as they have the same translator :) MagicUnk (talk) 14:10, 28 February 2023 (EST)
hopefully I did just that aardvark7 (talk) 14:14, 28 February 2023 (EST)
Also things like adding the translator then trying to match titles to earlier one,I get to but since I am not sure what I am doing at times, I end up doing in multiple steps, Sorry... Merging I was not familiar with. Keep learning new stuff all the time. Urania stuff is soooo complicated, see my comments in the Mods Board. aardvark7 (talk) 14:40, 28 February 2023 (EST)
You're doing fine. ISFDB is complicated at times. Also, do not forget to have a look at my messsage above concerning 'La doppia faccia degli UFO'. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 05:35, 2 March 2023 (EST)
Went in and played with it. aardvark7 (talk) 09:24, 2 March 2023 (EST)

Stations of the Tide

In this submission, you're trying to make a SHORTFICTION title have a NOVEL parent. That's not generally possible since they are significantly different in length. is it supposed to be an excerpt from the novel (and translated into Italian)? ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:23, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

This is the complete novel. It seems that the current convention for Urania is that they are Type: MAGAZINE. And this type does not seem to allow novels. Urania, #1642 is basically just a newer reprint of Urania #1236. I just went in and studied how Urania #1236 was entered. The title is listed as "Domani il mondo cambierà (Complete Novel)" and is listed as a serial. Should I go back and do the same for Urania #1642?? aardvark7 (talk) 10:10, 17 March 2023 (EDT)
Yes, probably. I believe there's a discussion happening somewhere right now about allowing NOVELs in MAGAZINE entries. I can't find it, though. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 10:37, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
Found it here. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 10:39, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
I have made my change. It now matches Urania #1236 aardvark7 (talk) 20:52, 22 March 2023 (EDT)

Yin Yum(m)ing

Concerning your recent submission of a French translation using Yin Yumming as artist name; it is best to record the artist's name as it appears in or on the book and then variant it to the canonical name. I've done that for you - see The Dragon Hunter and the Mage. MagicUnk (talk) 07:03, 25 March 2023 (EDT)

Please note that I used the same note about his name on every title version aardvark7 (talk) 09:55, 25 March 2023 (EDT)
That should be fine. However, if you have other publication records where you've updated the artist's name to Yuming, where there was Yumming printed in the book, do update these to reflect what's in the book. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 08:14, 28 March 2023 (EDT)
I've only seen two books by this author using this artist. Only the one has a foreign version. All use the Yumming name and all have my note. I have not seen any other book cover by this artist. aardvark7 (talk) 07:36, 29 March 2023 (EDT)

Les seigneurs de l'instrumentalité, I

A quick question about Les seigneurs de l'instrumentalité, I, which you added in May 2022. Did you plan to merge the French titles with their pre-existing counterparts? Or did you plan to turn them into new VTs because the translations were revised by Pierre-Paul Durastanti? Ahasuerus (talk) 12:19, 9 May 2023 (EDT)

Actually since this was over a year ago, I had forgotten about this. I don't have a list of who originally translated what, so I would assume it would be best to give credit to Durastanti. Input is always welcome. Also what is a VT? Anything that I end up doing will be after we get back from vacation in 3 weeks aardvark7 (talk) 21:11, 9 May 2023 (EDT)
Sorry about the cryptic acronym! "VT" stands for Variant Title. Making Durastanti the translator sounds like it should be workable. No worries about the time frame and thanks! Ahasuerus (talk) 18:08, 11 May 2023 (EDT)
OK we are back. Used Pierre-Paul Durastanti as the revised translator, and gave credit to the original where I could. Hope this is ok. aardvark7 (talk) 20:04, 29 May 2023 (EDT)

'979' ISBN

We need to add the ASIN for any publication with an ISBN13 beginning with 979. I added them to this one and this one. To see why, compare the result using the Amazon links menu (which uses the ISBN) and the ASIN link I added to the publications. thanks, John Scifibones 15:07, 31 May 2023 (EDT)

Or any other books where the ASIN starts with a B. Annie (talk) 15:11, 31 May 2023 (EDT)

Of prices and price categories

Hello Aardvark7. I have corrected your edit here, where you had added a book price to the record. Linguist (talk) 04:09, 1 June 2023 (EDT).

Not a problem, thanks for the fix. aardvark7 (talk) 12:28, 1 June 2023 (EDT)

Hellscape: A Post-Apocalyptic LitRPG

I don't think we should credit 'LitRPG Freaks' as an author of Hellscape: A Post-Apocalyptic LitRPG. Only Jared Mandani is credited on the title page. What do you think? John Scifibones 09:42, 29 August 2023 (EDT)

That's fine. I debated about this. Also I think the title should be just Hellscape. I am find other books with "A Post-Apocalyptic LitRPG" and believe this is just a descriptor for the book type. aardvark7 (talk) 10:53, 29 August 2023 (EDT)
Agree. Go ahead and submit the changes. John Scifibones 11:09, 29 August 2023 (EDT)

Restoration

A quick note about this submission. Ahasuerus (talk) 21:54, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

I have a Pinterest page where I match the original textless art with the usage. I have been working on Matt Stawicki and have come across a number of his not in the db. I am not that familiar with the dates of ISBN 13s so thanks for the info aardvark7 (talk) 10:57, 3 November 2023 (EDT)

A Way Home

Regarding this submission: When adding information from a secondary source (i.e. the information does not come from the pub), the source should be stated in the publication notes. I accepted your edit and then updated the pub notes as can be see here. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:17, 6 January 2024 (EST)

OK Thanks aardvark7 (talk) 14:21, 6 January 2024 (EST)
