Fleuve Noir - Anticipation

I have started going through the Anticipation series. As for RF and Univers, I'll be occasionally uploading new cover scans and adding notes to some of the pubs you have already verified. I'll also normalize the price indications : for instance, I found the same price indicated as Fr.240, Fr 240, F240.00 [sic], F240, etc. I think F240 is the simplest.

You may have entered this because there is a review of it in Analog? It is the intention of the publisher to produce issues quarterly and perhaps bi-monthly. It is better to make a decision about the classification sooner rather than later. The publisher as stated on the copyright page is "Cosmos Books, an imprint of Wildside Press" as opposed to just "Cosmos Books"; there's also a bibliographic note for Cosmos Books that indicates all pubs after 2000 should be credited to "Cosmos Books / Wildside Press" – just lettin' ya know. Could you please tell me which illustrations for that story show (a) The head and wing of a bat with shadowy figures in the background, (b) sharp forms amid clouds, and (c) a nude woman surrounded by glowing circles and a geodesic form? Waterspider

"In the Land of Unblind", by Judith Merril

While verifying a book of mine that contained "In the Land of Unblind", I noticed that it was a poem, and not the "Short Fiction" that we currently have it listed as. I checked it with another book I have that contains that title, and verified that it was a poem there as well. An essay in Galactic Central refers to it as a poem, and Judith Merril's daughter lists it as a poem in her bibliography of Merril's work. So unless someone knows a reason otherwise, I'll be changing that work to a poem in a couple of days. Since this affects a content item in 7 different verified publications, including one of yours, I am asking those verifiers to post any comments about this change on my talk page Chavey 07:31, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Duplicate SHORTFICTION titles

I knew there was a possibility that there could be two individual works with the same title by different authors. Other than the two items I left on the list, it was obvious that the others should have been entered as INTERIORART when the two works appeared on the same page and one of the "authors" had no fiction credits, but only art credits on their summary pages. Possible duplicate ISBNs

This clean-up report found three pairs of publications having duplicate ISBNs, several of which you have primary verified. Alas, there seems to be a pattern of duplicate ISBNs from this publisher in the past. Un saint au néon

Hello. Concerning Jean-Louis Curtis' Un saint au néon, I am wondering about its present pub type, which is NOVEL. The inside formatting and the warning at the beginning of the book (it is suggested that the stories should be read in a certain order) both imply that this is indeed a collection of five loosely connected stories more than a novel. I have just submitted this edit and respected the pub type, but I would be in favour of changing it to COLLECTION and adding five SHORTFICTION titles to the content — which also means changing all the related records, none of which are verified. Graphic versions of FN - Anticipation books

Hello. There is nothing so far on the help page corresponding to the new graphic option, and I was wondering if you had any advice in store about the comic book versions of FN - Anticipation books published by Artima / Comics Pocket in the ’70s (e.g., Vargo Statten's À travers les âges, 1975, 228 p., digest size, from the 1954 FN pub) : can they be considered as “graphic novels” that could be harboured in this db ? This exchange on the Community Portal wasn't all that clear about the matter. TIA, Linguist 14:55, 24 February 2015 (UTC).

In my interpretation, it's probably OK for "direct" adaptations of FNAs ("This miglht include for example, a graphic novel adaptation of Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall" by an ineligible author and artist.") but I'm personaly against too much dispersion. We're (IMHO) already too widely spread with paléo-SF, poems, science articles, borderline thrillers, non-genre novels and every book or text that has the smallest hint of a ghost or other vaguely supernatural beast. But I'm mostly a SF-integrist (I even believed that the SF in ISFDB was was for Science Fiction). Hauck 15:28, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

For clarification: a graphic novel's eligibility is identical to that of a non-genre novel. It must be written by an author who is "above-the-threshold", i.e. someone who a) has a reputation within the sf field, or b) is considered by most of the literary world to be an sf author. For example, Anthony Burgess, whose output is mostly non-genre, falls into the first category. Isaac Asimov falls into the second category, so his non-genre mystery novels are included in the database.
Eligibility for graphic novels would not include an adaptation by a "below-the-threshold" author of a work by a well-known sf author. If John Q. Nobody adapts a story by Bigname S. F. Author into a graphic novel, that work would not be eligible. If Bigname S. F. Author adapts a story by John Q. Nobody (or anyone else's including his own), it would be eligible for the database. In fact, I strictly don't give a damn about matters of "eligibility" and all the sterile debates that go with remarkably precise terms like "over-the-threshold" or "reputation" or "most of the literary world". It's not that it's uninteresting per se but my ISFDB time is (IMHO) better used on other projects. Basically, I think that only SF (thus fiction) written works should be accepted (and works ON sf). I just won't enter other works and won't moderate them even if I'm also a collector of "bande dessinée". We're far from simply hoping to reach such level of detail even if Mézières can easily pass all the tests evoked above. We are going to have lots of fun deciding if Gauckler's adaptation of Houssin's _Blue_ here and its sequel there should be entered. Hauck 18:05, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
You may not realize it, but we share the same basic sentiment about what should be in the db. I don't think the db should have allowed any non-genre works, including graphic novels, etc. In fact, any nonfiction work that isn't about speculative fiction wouldn't be in the database if I had my way. That includes the thousands of science and ur-science books already in the db, and the thousands of non-genre novels by science fiction writers. Unfortunately, neither you nor I can "have our way" about what is eligible for the database. Once it's decided by the group, we had no choice but to go along with it. So if you don't want to moderate non-sf submissions, that's fine. But on the same hand you should restrain from giving advice to other editors when questions about non-sf books are presented to you. Hi, can you undo my edit of the Jackson T. Farrell entry? I received a mail from John Clute pointing out that I had mixed-up Jackson T. Farrell with James T. Farrell -though John Clute could not rule out that a pseunonym is used here. Jackson T. Farrell is a person with one 1978 novel on his name, James T. Farrell a well-known author, publishing his last work in 1978. It is not enough to say 'this is the same man'. The dates of birth and death are close to each other, but not close enough. By sheer coincidence (?) you are in possession of the sole Jackson T. Overlapping series

About the Maurice Limat books : I was going to number the Coqdor titles, but stopped when I realized that this series overlapped the Robin Muscat one : at least two (Le flambeau du monde and Le treizième signe du zodiaque have both characters in common, whereas Fréquence "ZZ" doesn't, for instance. Is there a way to solve the numbering problem ? I can't see any obvious solution. Besides, could Muscat share a “Coqdor / Muscat universe”, rather than be made a subseries of the Coqdor one ? I'm generally against all this detailed series business (especially when seeing the maintenance costs associated with a numbering that can change with time). Edhasa vs. E.D.H.A.S.A.

In some recent PubUpdates, to regularize a publication series that had both versions of this publisher, Linguist noted that the publisher name "edhasa" is an acronym for E.D.H.A.S.A., "Editora y Distribuidora Hispano Americana, S.A.". I wonder if these two variants of the publisher should be merged? You are the only editor with a verified publication under "Edhasa", so it would be natural to leave that decision to you. (By the way, it looks like that book's publication series name may be misspelled.) There is a wide year gap between the publications listed under these two names, and sometimes a publisher rebrands how they present themselves, so it isn't obvious. There's only "edhasa" (small caps) everywhere in the book. Even if I know that EDHASA is an acronym, I'm not in favor of the "E.D.H.A.S.A." spelling, because 1) it's quite ugly to the eye (and quite complicated to enter) and 2) as is frequently the case, it seems that edhasa became the "standard" name of the company (exactly like Seat to stay in Spain). I'm not sure why you say it's not the cover price. When I was doing a bunch of data entry for this series, I spot compared what Liverpool said on their web site with what Amazon said, and they always agreed on that price. I also did some Wayback Machine searches, and the listed prices had not changed from the very initial postings. I checked these two titles on Amazon.uk, and both of them agreed with Liverpool about the base cover price. But you were certainly right that I should have annotated where I got those prices from, so I added that to both pubs. Chavey 18:11, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Not being a native english speaker, I naively thought that "cover price" meant the price ON the cover, not an ultimately variable price given on a site which will change (a perfect example being the Gannon where someone -I suppose that it was you- inserted annotations and price of £50 that alas no more match the reality of a £55 price) a problem that I want to avoid by blanking the price field. But I was probably mistaken. We're left with the basic question of what to enter in the price field : the price that is physically ON the book, the price that someone paid for the book at a given time, the indicated price of the book at one or more site at the time of the last modification of the publication (supllemental question : does it include a potential discount?). Personally, let me stick to the first option (and so seems to do the help pages, cf. the part about stickers). Francis Bessière revisited

I fell upon this Spanish translation of Dorémieux' Voyages dans l'ailleurs here, where the short story entitled “La barbe du ministre” is credited to “F. Richard-Bessière”. See also this site, where the author is called “Francis Richard Bessière”. I would now tend to consider "Francis” as a mere typo for “François” or a faulty development of “F.”, possibly triggered by the fact that he is followed (on the cover, at least) by Francis Carsac in the alphabetical list. This subject vaguely ring a bell. IIRC we didn't find (enough ?) evidence to link both authors. IMHO, the spanish title (not possibly PVed as it seems) should be entered as by "Francis Bessière" and varianted to its french counterpart. I have a tp sized art portfolio in my collection titled "Young Artists" which is a showcase of artwork of 34 artists each being give two pages of artwork. It has named individuals on the title page but after headings like "UK publishing" there are also London and New York addresses from Young Artists. There is no named publisher or editor. I wanted to get your thoughts on the inconsistency I've noticed over the last 3 days whilst verifying my own collection. I have noticed that sometimes the named individual is listed in the artist field, other times not. I have not been entirely sure whether putting the named individual into the Artist field is ok. Also it seems (at least to me) to be rather odd to inform the PVs of this when surely that information should have already been entered by one (or more) of the verifiers. It does seem to be a rather lengthy way to go about informing someone of something that they (should / probably) already know about the book since they've verified it. I'm guessing that you probably can't readily answer that (to me at least, seemingly obvious) question. When I first started work in the late 1980s and PCs were the 'in thing' (Olivetti's with CRT monitors that displayed everything with an orange colour) I was doing entering data onto a database (very dull stuff - cabinets of insects, moths, butterflies and vascular plants - I worked in a museum back then) there was a large notice on the wall that said "A database is a collection of information some of which is always wrong." --Mavmaramis 17:34, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

The jacket or cover designer is not considered "ISFDB-wise" as the artist, as far as I'm concerned, when facing a case where only a designer is given, I tend to left the "Artist" field blank (and rarely giving the designer's name in the notes). As for the mandatory noticiation of PVs, it's a lenghty process but it's our way of doing things. There are recurring talks of a possible automatisation but nothing came out of it. Le chemin de la Lune

While working on transliterated legal names, I saw your verified Le chemin de la Lune by Alexandre Kazantzev. At first I thought that it was an expansion of his earlier (1951) story of the same title and we just needed to add a note. However, the Russian site FantLab claims that although there was a longer version of the original story, it was a screenplay. They also claim that Le chemin de la Lune was a translation of Лунная дорога, a different work. Their version seems plausible since Лунная дорога means "Moon Road" in Russian.

The original title is given in cyrilic as "Гость из космоса" (with slight changes but it's recognizable), that's why I was able to link it to something (I'm strictly illiterate in ruissian and can't even know how to enter a single thing in this alphabet). "The Implacable Equation" is the title of one of the early chapters. Also, a quick scan of the text finds Gromov, Anikin(e), Tom Godwin (Том Годвин), Ellen Kenny (Эллен Кенни) and John Smith (Джон Смит), so it appears to be the same work. Curiously, the book starts with a rehash of Tom Godwin's famous "The Cold Equations" (!).

Star Trek Movie Memories

I have a copy of this book but cannot determine whether I have the 1994 HarperCollins (UK) tp or the Nov 1994 - neither entry is helpful in determining which one I should verify. Details of my copy are identical to both states (but I note the first entry has 357 pages, the second 358) although there may be a mistake as 357 is the last numbered page there is an unnumbered page with text after that dated 19 September 1994. I could use some guidance / clarification in regards to the Elfquest series listed here. I have a run of eight volumes, the first two are the Starblaze / Donning editions here and here, but the next one is neither this or this but is a Father Tree Press version with "Book Three: Captives of the Blue Mountain" on the title page. IMHO you can enter your publications (if they're not already present). As for their precise position in the series, it's your call (the relative position of texts is always a matter of debate), note that giving a rank in the series is not mandatory (I rarely give it as I left it to experts). Unable to tell editions apart

I have two copies of this book. The one shown with the template design and another with a different cover. I have already "Add new title" for this book that I have which has identical contents (even down to the "First edition" on copyright page) but has a different cover. The three I have are the limited edition versions that were issued with slip cases and a signed print and limited to 300 copies worldwide. They have the same ISBNs as the regular hardback editions. These have variant covers from the standard editions.

Holdstock Encyclopedia of SF

I just wanted to double check. I have both the Octopus and the Cathay editions of this book. Could you check page 91 for me (I've got both open at the same page) and my Cathay edition has sidebar text that reads "A V2 rocket in a spinning top - Alex Schomberg's cover from Thrilling Wonder seems hopelessly dated now, unlike many pulp magazines of the time" (this text above the Angus McKie illustration) but the Octopus version doesn't have this text at all. This sidebar text in the Cathay edition indicates (to me at least) that above it there should be an illustration - there's space for one. I have been looking at this book. I have a copy of this book which seems to be different. Namely the editor is Lorraine Dille William. It does have a Ray Bradbury intro titled "Buck Rogers in Apollo Year 1" but it is dated 18 October 1969 (not the 11th). It omits the Buck Rogers Autobiography essay and adds two sections (1) The Men Who Made it Possible" uncredited essays on the Dille family with photos and (2) a reprinted version of Nowlan's story Armageddon 2419AD from Amazing Stories. When you variant at this page you're operating at the title level, a "immaterial" level for example to indicate that this work exists also under a different title without any "physical" data. What you want to do is to operate at the publication level because you're interested in "physical" objects (books, magazines or files). In this case you either have to stay at title level and use the "Add Publication to This Title" item or go down at publication level (choose the one that is nearest to your copy to limit the typing) here and use the "Clone This Pub" function then modify the necessary fields. Niven Protector

Further to the discussion regarding this book. Original error of record that had the 1972 edition cover scan. My suggestion would be to delete the artwork uploaded for it (it should be for the 1972 edition). The secondary source log is "almost certainly" correct in attributing the artwork to Roberts. It was the simple fact that the artwork and the credit didn't match raised that raised the red flag for me. Les annales des Heechees

According to this title record, the first J'ai Lu printing of Les annales des Heechees appeared in June 1898 (sic), which was presumably supposed to be 1998-06 or 1989-06. We also have an Amazon.fr-derived record for a 1999-01 printing with the same ISBN, but I suspect that it may be the same printing incorrectly dated. Worldcat says that the book came out in 1989 as part of J'ai Lu - Science Fiction. Noosfere knows of two printings with subtly different covers, one in June 1989 and the other in April 1995. Triangle pub series

Concerning the two pub series of Édtions du Triangle : as the numeration is continuous, I think Éditions du Triangle - Science-Fiction and Éditions du Triangle - Science-Fiction-Anthologie should be merged, and the “Anthologie” bit mentioned in the notes as a sub-series (as for Super luxe, for instance). Since there is only one book of the Second Variety (haha) so far, it won't be too much trouble. I was going to add another one, but your opinion about this would be useful before I do. The Past Through Tomorrow 1 & 2

Re this book and this book neither of which have been primary verified. I have NEL paperback editions of these two volmes both of which have copyright pages that state "This impression 1987" (no month given.) I didn't want to go ahead and make substantial changes to these records as, although I know that the covers are correct (they are a split of the Tim White illustration used on this book) for the NEL paperback editions I don't own these particular versions. My copies have completely different artwork but details are identical.
