Welcome!

Hello, Fiendlover, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 21:55, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Horror Zine, Fall-Winter 2012

There was already a record for this issue in the database. You only add to update it to add the contents. I'll delete it and replace it with the record you've created which include the contents. It's a good idea to search for the publication record before adding a new record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 21:55, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

I'll have to make a few changes to the record you created, most importantly changing it from ANTHOLOGY to MAGAZINE, the ISFDB type for periodical publications. I also changed the publication format from "pb" (softcover books less than 7 inches tall) to "tp" for trade paperbacks. I also added a date, cover image and price based on the Amazon listing, which I gave as the source for the data. You skipped the Source field in the submission which allows the editor to provide the source for the data, including the actual publication itself. If you have a copy of this issue do a primary verification of the record (see the link in the Welcome section above.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:56, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Horror Zine, Summer 2013

Here is the record for the Summer 2013 issue. Again, there was already a record for this issue already in the database. To search for a record go to the author/artist summary page, in this case the page for Jeani Rector. You'll see a Magazine Editor Series category and a listing for the magazine titled The Horror Zine Magazine, which has been separated by annual records. Or under the search box at the top left of every page of the database, enter "horror zine" and use the dropdown menu for "magazine" and this result would appear. You can click on the "View Issue Grid" to see this grid with links to all of the records for this periodical in the database. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:22, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

You also failed to give a source for the data. This is a requirement for all editors. We understand that new editors may not be familiar with the standard so we give them some slack. When you get a chance, please take some time to read the help pages linked in the Welcome section above. Again, thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 22:22, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

The Stray Branch

Is this a speculative fiction magazine? Mhhutchins|talk 03:56, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Can you confirm that all of the contents which you have created for the Spring/Summer 2014 issue are speculative fiction? Mhhutchins|talk 04:48, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

I could not figure this out. Thanks for the help.Adioses14 04:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
It is important to the integrity of the database that a work's eligibility be determined. Here's a link to the policy for inclusion. I will hold your submission to add the issue until you're able to determine the eligibility of each of the contents. If there are works which you are certain are eligible, but others which you feel do not qualify, then it would be best to create a new record, only including those eligible works.
Looking at the submission, there are several problems which should also be corrected. (See the Welcome section above for links to Help pages on creating publication records.)
  • The title field should be disamgibuated for periodicals so that each record has a unique title. In this case, the title should have been "The Stray Branch, Spring/Summer 2014".
  • You gave the issue name in the series field. That field should be the name of the magazine only. The series number field for periodicals should be blank.
  • The synopsis field should not be just a list of contributors. That's why you have the ability to enter individual contents.
  • The website you linked to is just a splash page which provides nothing of interest.
  • You gave "pb" (as in paperback) for the publication binding/format. According to the Amazon listing, this publication is 10" tall, making it a trade paperback, thus entered as "tp"
  • There was no currency given in the price field. Because this is an international database, it is important that you give the currency. In this case, I assume it should be US dollars, thus "$10.00".
  • Amazon gives the publication date as March 29, 2014, or "2014-03-29" when entered into an ISFDB record. You may use this for the date field.
Let me know if you wish for me to accept the submission and you will make corrections to the above problem, including removing and deleting non-eligible contents. Or do you wish to cancel the submission and start over. Please respond here. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 05:19, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
I looked over the magazine again and found that all fall under speculative fiction. Go ahead and accept if you would and I'll make the corrections. Thank you.Adioses14 22:54, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
I've accepted the submission. Here's the record I had to disambiguate two authors who have identical names to other authors (which I'm sure are different persons). Ask if you need help to make the changes. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 00:52, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. I have made the changes, hopefully they are corrected now.Adioses14 01:01, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

The Crimson Tome

I had to remove the cover image which you linked to this record. We do not have permission from that website to link to their images. Because that file is hosted on another server, we are required to get permission from the website owner, otherwise it's considered bandwidth theft. Here is the ISFDB policy concerning linking to off-site files. I have changed to link to a cover image file hosted by Amazon, who have given us permission. Mhhutchins|talk 06:09, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Okay, next time I'll link Amazon pictures. Thank you.Adioses14 01:01, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Spectral Realms

I had to reject your submission to update this record, because no changes were made. What were you wanting to update in it? Mhhutchins|talk 01:27, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

No, that was a mistake, I was just checking something.Adioses14 02:25, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Spectral Realms #2

Re this publication: I removed the publication series designation and made it into a title series. (See here to understand the difference.)

Also, please correct the author credit for "The Ballad of Dead Men's Bay". Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 02:57, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

The Book of Jade

Re this publication:

  1. What is on the first 124 pages of this collection?
  2. Is the work being reviewed on page 147 one of speculative fiction? If not, the review should have been entered as an ESSAY instead of a REVIEW.
  3. Also, why do you submit under one user name and respond using another user name? :)

Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 06:29, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Oh, and I abridged the synopsis. It should be a brief, objective overview of the work. Publishers tend to go overboard in their description, as is their wont, but we should be more impartial. You should also give the source for the synopsis if you don't write it yourself. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 06:34, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

The first 124 is the original poetry of the Book of Jade; it's the original Book of Jade. Adioses14 06:40, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
You should enter the poems into the record, even if it's a single long poem. Otherwise the record is incomplete. Mhhutchins|talk 19:26, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
The book being reviewed is in French, I'm not sure if it's speculative fiction. Adioses14 06:40, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
That's when the Internet can be your friend. It's a nonfiction work on psychology. I will change it to an ESSAY. We have to be careful of "mission creep". Mhhutchins|talk 19:26, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
I have no idea. I think I might have made two accounts and I don't know how to change it.Adioses14 06:40, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
When you're in the wiki (like here and now), log out. Then log back in using the same user name and password that you use to edit the database. Or you can do the opposite. It's best to have the same user name and password for both sides. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 19:26, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay I logged out and entered this user name and I guess I do have 2 accounts. Is there a way of getting rid of one? Or will that just mess things up?Fiendlover 02:56, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
The only way to delete a account, as far as I know, is to have a moderator do it, and I can't see a reason for doing it. Just stick to one and it should be OK. Mhhutchins|talk 04:13, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thanks.Fiendlover 06:03, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Necronomicum

Re this record:

Is the use of all capitals in the titles (and the magazine title itself) authorial, editorial, or just a design choice? If you're not certain, then you should use standard capitalization rules as explained here (look in the "Case" subsection).

Also, the credit for the Sammons story should be standardized, with a period after the middle initial.

You gave a title series number, but not a title series name. That would be the name of the magazine (not the title of the issue). In this case, "Necronomicum". (God, I hate that terrible pun.) If you enter more issues, and they're publishing more than 1 or 2 each year, we will have to merge them into annual editor records, and drop the numbers. But that's to be determined at a later time.

One last thing: Is there a month date given on the title page? I couldn't find this issue on Amazon, but in the others, they're given month dates like "October 2014" and "July 2015". If so, that should be given in the title field, e.g. "Necronomicum: The Magazine of Weird Erotica, Issue #4 October 2015". (Or whatever is stated on the title page.) Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins|talk

The use of all capitals are exactly taken from the table of contents; same with the lack of a period after the M for Sammons. I would normally have used proper standardized rules otherwise. It has October 2015 on the cover but not *in* the title. Should I add it anyway?Adioses14 02:52, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
It doesn't have to be in the title to be used in the title field. The actual title should be everything before the first comma, after which you give disambiguating data to distinguish it from other issues.
I can't believe that every author in the publication wrote stories in which they capitalized the titles. That is definitely a design choice, not an authorial one. Please standardize them when you get a chance. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 04:17, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
BTW, you still need to enter the title record into a series. You can edit the title field in the same submission. Mhhutchins|talk 04:18, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure where I see how to change it into a series.Fiendlover 06:00, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay, nevermind, I figured it out, I think.Fiendlover 06:03, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Author initials

As was pointed out to you in an earlier message, you should enter a space after all initialed letters in an author's name. I've corrected them in about a half dozen titles in this publication. Mhhutchins|talk 21:33, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Gothic Blue Book V

There was already a record for this publication in the database. It was noticed after your submission to add a new one was accepted. I have deleted the old record and kept your verified record. Mhhutchins|talk 19:38, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

I put it in the search bar first and nothing came up, so I assumed there wasn't an entry for it.
Unless I know how you searched, I wouldn't know how that happened. Searching for "Gothic Blue Book" under titles should have found it. Or you could have searched for "Cynthia Pelayo" under names and you'd have seen it listed on her page. Mhhutchins|talk 20:36, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Possible Typos 10-Apr

Here are some possible typos:

If they are errors in the databse, they need to be corrected. If they are errors in the original publications, notes should be added to the publication and title records. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:14, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Spectal Realms Series

I'm going to change the records for Spectral Realms. You currently have these as a series of anthologies. However, the Hippocampus website describes it as "A Weird Poetry Journal" and sells it by subscription. They also list an ISSN as well as an ISBN. I'm going to convert these records to magazines. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 13:38, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
