Welcome!

Hello, Maybrick, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 18:29, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Colin Kapp's photo

Thanks for submitting Colin Kapp's photo! Your "Note to Moderator" reads:

  • Message was sent to Gateway to let us know if they have a problem with using their photos. So far they do not have a problem with it.

Could you please specify who gave the permission to link to www.sfgateway.com and quote what they wrote? Once we have the information, we will add it to ISFDB:Image_linking_permissions and update the ISFDB software to recognize "sfgateway.com" as a supported domain name. TIA! Laura Smith of Hachette UK Enquiries: ' 01235 400 400 | * enquiries@hachette.co.uk. She wrote "Thank you for your email. Can I ask which authors so I can let the publicity teams know?" I replied "Kapp for now but there will probably be more later."Maybrick (talk) 14:10, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for the update! Have they gotten back to you since your reply? If they have, what did their e-mail say? The reason I am asking for the specifics is that there can be a difference between:
  • letting us upload one of their images to the ISFDB server, and
  • letting us link directly to an image stored on their servers the way the Colin Kapp submission does it
Better safe than sorry :-) Ahasuerus (talk) 16:19, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
No further message from them. I'll let you know if one comes in. For the other specifics you mention I would use the email provided above.Maybrick (talk) 17:28, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for the clarification. I am afraid we can't add the image to Kapp's author page until we get an explicit permission. BTW, there is another Kapp photo online in case you haven't seen it. Ahasuerus (talk) 17:54, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Fantlab's Kapp page with 2 photos: https://fantlab.ru/autor2036. --Username (talk) 19:33, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
That should do it since we have permission to link to FantLab. I have added a link and rejected the original submission. Thanks both. Ahasuerus (talk) 20:40, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
I have a dozen photo submissions left for SF Gateway and they are working on the permissions from the publicity teams. While that is going on they should not be rejected. I will keep up with it here. I'll alo be looking into FantLab for some.12:36, 18 May 2023 (EDT)

Maybrick (talk) 12:20, 18 May 2023 (EDT)

Sounds good. I have put the submissions on hold while their team is working on the issue. Please let me know when things are sorted out. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:33, 18 May 2023 (EDT)
As I keep seeing "the publicity team", I just want to make sure we are all on the same page - had you asked them if we can use (aka copy here and reuse) their images or if we can deep-link to them (aka link and show directly from their storage)? The two actions and permissions are very different - usually a publicity team can grant the first; the latter adds usage and traffic to the site without giving them visitors so usually require web-admin or someone else technical permission. Annie (talk) 12:54, 18 May 2023 (EDT)
They may grant permission for certain images only but I will ask for permission to copy-and-reuse these images only. Will that be possible? This is what I just emailed them - let me know if it is inaccurate : ISFD moderators would like permission to copy-and-reuse any of the photo images if possible. The ones specified at least. They say a publicity team can give permission for this but a permission to deep-link the images only will just add traffic to your site (from our use of the images) but not increase the visitors to your site. So permission to copy-and-reuse all of the images would probably be best since it can bring visitors to both websites. Permission for copy-and reuse of certain images can do that also to a more limited extent. Maybrick (talk) 17:03, 19 May 2023 (EDT)
Orion Publicity Dept Enquiries has given permission to copy-and-reuse any of the images "as it is not for profit". I have some pending edits for this at present.Maybrick (talk) 17:14, 23 May 2023 (EDT)
"Copy and reuse" presumably means that we are allowed to upload copies of some of their images to our server, then link to the uploaded image from each affected author record -- please see Help:How to upload images to the ISFDB wiki for details. This is different from your outstanding submissions like this one, which would link directly to SFGateway/Orion's servers. Ahasuerus (talk) 18:13, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Page blanking?

I am not sure whether you meant to blank the main ISFDB Wiki page and delete the exchanges on this Talk page or whether your account has been compromised. Please respond here to let us know what happened. In the meantime I have rolled back the changes. Ahasuerus (talk) 20:16, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Yes I deleted talk page - and please delete the account also if possible.Maybrick (talk) 20:22, 23 May 2023 (EDT)
