If [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1282831 The Second Man] is indeed a novel, we handle that differently - we will make it a serial (of 1 - with a special way to record that) and then connect to the novel. If it is a novella that was expanded, they do not get connected. As it looks like it is a novel indeed, I did that here. See if [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1954976 this] looks correct to you now. Welcome!

Hello, Maybrick, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 18:29, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Knight Rider 3: Hearts of Stone

A few small things:

  • We usually remove the series names from the titles unless they are integral and the title page shows it (and the editor thinks the title always contain it). As Knight Rider is the series name and 3 the sequence, I stripped it from the title itself - it is in the series name after all. if you really think it should be part of the title, I can restore it.
  • Only one ISBN please - we will calculate the other. For a 1984 book, the ISBN-10 is what we want :)
  • When you source the book from GR, add the ID as an external identifier. Especially when you do not add any other source :)
  • Target in this era is recorded as Target / W. H. Allen. See this for more details]. I fixed.

The result is here. Let me know if you have any concerns and/or questions. Annie 22:18, 29 October 2019 (EDT)

On a further review and based on the rest of the books and second author added. I will also add the Pinnacle edition. Annie 22:23, 29 October 2019 (EDT)

Can you explain what you mean by ID <?> I do not see anything like that at the GR page. Also, the series entries all have KR in the title. Take a look for yourself. Maybrick 14:49, 31 October 2019 (EDT)

When you go to the GR page (this one for example), look at the address bar. The last part is "9078323-knight-rider-3". The number at the start(9078323) is the ID (and this is what I added here.
Yes, I know for the names - see my second note above. I added them there for now. Technically, the prefered practice is not to have them but as we have a PV, that needs clearing with them and is on my list of things to do. :) Annie 14:57, 31 October 2019 (EDT)
And yes - I am monitoring your page :) When you post on mine, try to post in the talk section and not on my User page - I reverted the changes there. :) 15:00, 31 October 2019 (EDT)

Walt Disney's The Misadventures of Merlin Jones

Hi, I approved your submission for Walt Disney's The Misadventures of Merlin Jones but, as you can already see from the title, I have completely rebuilt it. I did so based upon the actual title page, that I was able to trace on eBay. We take title and author as printed on the title page, hence 'Mary Carey' and not 'M.V. Carey' -which we would have entered as 'M. V. Carey' if it was right. Also note how an illustrator is to be entered, or external IDs (best go in edit mode on the publication -and not submit afterwards, but use the 'back' button). Another thing is that the note field is not meant for 'qv below'.--Dirk P Broer 08:12, 15 January 2020 (EST)

You would have to pay me as an employee to actually follow your feedback. It's too much to expect for my type of user. My infrequent entries may have to handled like this one in future. Thanks for the corrections, but they involve too many technicalities to expect to get right next time from infrequent users. For example, I looked for "interior artwork" and that does not seem to be anywhere for an old entry let alone a new one. I'm sure you could elaborate further on what to do, but as I say, it is just not worth the time : that would be too much like unpaid labor. Try to keep this in mind for other users like myself so that you do not waste too much of your time, either, expecting too much. Maybrick 19:47, 25 January 2020 (EST)

Postpunk

I am tagging the 1994 story Fan by Geoff Ryman as postpunk. This is a cyberpunk derivative that is chronologically after core cyberpunk, where society is more comfortable but relatively helpless with the given technology, but not as socialized yet as in for example Ian Banks' 1987 story A Gift from the Culture. Nor does it concern itself so much with the rapid and advanced tech of postcyperpunk themes since its manned space age does not extend beyond the solar system. I myself have written a story like this titled The Lights Off Tension Way. Anyone who wants to publish it should let me know. Maybrick 19:50, 9 July 2020 (EDT)

Way to get that plug in there. --Username (talk) 16:54, 3 March 2023 (EST)

Earthmen Bearing Gifts

If you find titles that are exact duplicates (same story with the same title and author), you can use the "Check for Duplicate Titles" option to merge them. See Help:How to merge titles for more details. I have merged the two "Earthmen Bearing Gifts" titles. Thanks for finding this. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:03, 6 December 2020 (EST)

Fairyland

Maybrick, there is no need to submit an edit with no changes in order to ask a question. In the future, just ask on the Help Desk or Community Portal. Look at the author's name for the answer to your question. This title is for the publications which credit 'Paul McAuley', one of the alternate names for 'Paul J. McAuley', as the author. John Scifibones 22:46, 3 May 2022 (EDT)

I'm glad your new submission regarding this title was accepted. When you post on a talk page, please don't post on an unrelated thread. If it is a new conversation, start a new thread. Since it was related to this post, you could have posted here, I would have responded. Thanks John Scifibones 14:19, 5 May 2022 (EDT)

Colin Kapp's photo

Thanks for submitting Colin Kapp's photo! Your "Note to Moderator" reads:

  • Message was sent to Gateway to let us know if they have a problem with using their photos. So far they do not have a problem with it.

Could you please specify who gave the permission to link to www.sfgateway.com and quote what they wrote? Once we have the information, we will add it to ISFDB:Image_linking_permissions and update the ISFDB software to recognize "sfgateway.com" as a supported domain name. TIA! Ahasuerus (talk) 17:42, 16 May 2023 (EDT)

Laura Smith of Hachette UK Enquiries: ' 01235 400 400 | * enquiries@hachette.co.uk. She wrote "Thank you for your email. Can I ask which authors so I can let the publicity teams know?" I replied "Kapp for now but there will probably be more later."Maybrick (talk) 14:10, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for the update! Have they gotten back to you since your reply? If they have, what did their e-mail say? The reason I am asking for the specifics is that there can be a difference between:
  • letting us upload one of their images to the ISFDB server, and
  • letting us link directly to an image stored on their servers the way the Colin Kapp submission does it
Better safe than sorry :-) Ahasuerus (talk) 16:19, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
No further message from them. I'll let you know if one comes in. For the other specifics you mention I would use the email provided above.Maybrick (talk) 17:28, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for the clarification. I am afraid we can't add the image to Kapp's author page until we get an explicit permission. BTW, there is another Kapp photo online in case you haven't seen it. Ahasuerus (talk) 17:54, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
Fantlab's Kapp page with 2 photos: https://fantlab.ru/autor2036. --Username (talk) 19:33, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
That should do it since we have permission to link to FantLab. I have added a link and rejected the original submission. Thanks both. Ahasuerus (talk) 20:40, 17 May 2023 (EDT)
I have a dozen photo submissions left for SF Gateway and they are working on the permissions from the publicity teams. While that is going on they should not be rejected. I will keep up with it here. I'll alo be looking into FantLab for some.12:36, 18 May 2023 (EDT)

Maybrick (talk) 12:20, 18 May 2023 (EDT)

Sounds good. I have put the submissions on hold while their team is working on the issue. Please let me know when things are sorted out. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:33, 18 May 2023 (EDT)
As I keep seeing "the publicity team", I just want to make sure we are all on the same page - had you asked them if we can use (aka copy here and reuse) their images or if we can deep-link to them (aka link and show directly from their storage)? The two actions and permissions are very different - usually a publicity team can grant the first; the latter adds usage and traffic to the site without giving them visitors so usually require web-admin or someone else technical permission. Annie (talk) 12:54, 18 May 2023 (EDT)
They may grant permission for certain images only but I will ask for permission to copy-and-reuse these images only. Will that be possible? This is what I just emailed them - let me know if it is inaccurate : ISFD moderators would like permission to copy-and-reuse any of the photo images if possible. The ones specified at least. They say a publicity team can give permission for this but a permission to deep-link the images only will just add traffic to your site (from our use of the images) but not increase the visitors to your site. So permission to copy-and-reuse all of the images would probably be best since it can bring visitors to both websites. Permission for copy-and reuse of certain images can do that also to a more limited extent. Maybrick (talk) 17:03, 19 May 2023 (EDT)
Orion Publicity Dept Enquiries has given permission to copy-and-reuse any of the images "as it is not for profit". I have some pending edits for this at present.Maybrick (talk) 17:14, 23 May 2023 (EDT)
"Copy and reuse" presumably means that we are allowed to upload copies of some of their images to our server, then link to the uploaded image from each affected author record -- please see Help:How to upload images to the ISFDB wiki for details. This is different from your outstanding submissions like this one, which would link directly to SFGateway/Orion's servers. Ahasuerus (talk) 18:13, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Page blanking?

I am not sure whether you meant to blank the main ISFDB Wiki page and delete the exchanges on this Talk page or whether your account has been compromised. Please respond here to let us know what happened. In the meantime I have rolled back the changes. Ahasuerus (talk) 20:16, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Yes I deleted talk page - and please delete the account also if possible.Maybrick (talk) 20:22, 23 May 2023 (EDT)
