The Space-Eaters

Hi - Welcome to the ISFDB. Thanks for your submission of notes. One of your submission was a statement that the short story The Space-Eaters was not appearing on the list of works by Belknap Long Frank Belknap Long. I understand your confusion (it's happened to all of us), but we only want each short title to only appear once on each author's page. Because the short story is part of the Cthulu Mythos series, it appears higher on the authors page. It is the first story in the section titled Short Fiction Series. Because it appears in the series section, it does not appear in the section titled Shortfiction. But thanks very much for checking. 21st Century Gothic

Hi. I accepted your submission for 21st Century Gothic, but it contained no modifications. I can't tell if you thought you needed to submit it solely due to your having made yourself Primary Verifier (you don't -- marking yourself a verifier is an unmoderated activity and takes effect right away) or if something got lost, so please review if you intended to change something.

A further comment about that existing entry: If you come across a note citing a secondary source (Amazon, Locus, etc.), especially on a publication record with no verifier, it usually means the entry was constructed from the secondary source(s) and not from a copy of the book. So if you have the book, and its details match what's in the record, you should adjust the note accordingly: Remove the reference to the secondary source or modify the statement to cover just the data elements not found in the book. For example, in this case, if your book says "First Edition: December 2010", you should remove the statement about the date's coming from Amazon. On the other hand, if your book has no stated publication date, you might reword the note to say that: "No publication date stated; date from Amazon" or some such.

If you run across a case where you're not quite sure, just ask (or take your best shot and voice your concerns about what you've done in the note to the moderator). Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 10:43, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

"A Sheaf of Horrific Delights"

Hi. I'm sorry, but I had to reject your submission that proposed changing A Sheaf of Horrific Delights from ESSAY to NONFICTION. The use of NONFICTION as a type is reserved to book-length works. Anything shorter that's not fiction and is not a Review or Interview we assign a type of ESSAY, even if it's not an essay. It was a review of a horror book or books. I regularly review for the critical journal DEAD RECKONINGS. Do you need more exact details of the book/s reviewed? Note: there are several other items on the list of my ';essays' which are in fact reviews. I'd like to change them to reflect their status as reviews as well. 1988 Terror Australis

Hi. I have your proposed addition of a 1988 Terror Australis on hold. You didn't supply contents, so it's difficult for me to tell: Might this be the same as the existing Terror Australis #1? You can reply here by editing this section. Naming conventions for magazines and fanzines

Because we are building grids for these, we have some requirements around name conventions. The basic syntax is "Name of the zine, Issue number" or "Name of the zine, Month and year" or combination of these. Then the date will tell the grid where to put something. So for your "Avatar No 3 (June 1995)", depending on what is printed on the fanzine itself, the name should be either "Avatar, No 3" or "Avatar, No 3, June 1995" and the date should be 1995-06-00. I chose the first but feel free to change it. Is there other contents besides yours in the fanzine? If not, remove the Incomplete I added. I also set up the series for it, moved the note to it (where it belongs) and got the editor record standardized. You can see the whole thing here. Thanks for adding it! What kind of a keyboard do you have? Another way to sign is by pressing the sign button. When you are editing here in the wiki (not the site) look at the top of the message. Do you see the line of icons (some look like the ones from wordpad)? The one before the last (which looks like a signature a bit) will add the 4 tildes for you. --Annie 00:52, 26 October 2019 (EDT)

I don't see any icons, just the tabs at the top of the page. Where is the 'sign button' you mention? I suppose I could copy and paste the four tildes from the message under Terror Australis above? - Leigh

When you are editing any message, under the tabs and under the title and above the line starting with ==. they look like small pictures but are small buttons. The first one is B for bold, then I for Italic then Ab for a link and so on. and yes, you can always copy paste from above :) Annie 01:17, 26 October 2019 (EDT)

Recent Additions

I have approved a number of your recent additions, but made some changes to match ISFDB standards:

  • Prices should be entered with a currency symbol ($, £, etc.) as we deal in multiple currencies
  • Chapbook has a specific definition for ISFDB. It is a book with a single short story / poem. If it contains multiple, even two, we list it as a collection (single author) / anthology (multiple authors)
  • If a book doesn't have a price or ISBBN, that information goes into the publication notes; not in those fields
  • Where you left a moderator note stating you would enter the contents latter or you only listed your story and it seems there should have been more, I added a {{Incomplete}} template to indicate not all the contents were entered. This should be removed when you finish with the entry.
  • You are correct that for a mixed genre publication, we only list the genre contents. We add a note to the pub to state that.
  • Magazine ISSN's do not go into the ISBN field
  • For non-genre magazine, we don't credit the editor by name. We use "Editors of MAGAZINE NAME".
  • The Synopsis field is for a short blurb describing what the story, novel, etc. is about. We have a separate notes field for other notes. I moved your notes to the notes field.

Did this have a date or a volume number? Magazines should have this in their titles.

You had a note of "Leigh Blackmore's story features collage illustrations by the author." I converted this to an interior art credit. By author, I assume you meant yourself as story author and not the editor.

Go to the publication. In this case here. Look at the top right corner. Locate the edit button. It opens this. Change the value in the drop down to A5, press "Submit Changed Data" at the bottom. Then a moderator needs to approve.
If you first find the title (here), look at the table at the bottom of the screen, the publications are there. Click on their name, then follow the above. Annie 02:21, 17 November 2019 (EST)

Dark Spirits

We credit authors listed as per the title page (publication or story title page as applicable). For Dark Spirits, the Amazon Look Inside shows it as "R. R. Lang" so I have changed the credit.

Horrors of Sherlock Holmes

Hi, I completely edited your submitted collection Horrors of Sherlock Holmes into an ANTHOLOGY, as it contains works by more than one author. Being of 30cm height (according to the Australian National Library, that also provided the missing page numbers and the ISBN) it can't be A4 -which is a magazine size to begin with- so I made it a trade paperback.--Dirk P Broer 05:53, 5 November 2019 (EST)

Hi, I believe this change to be incorrect. The book is a collection of work by one author (me), which happens to have an introduction by another author (Peter H. Cannon). It is not an anthology, which is an edited collection of stories by different authors, usually by one or two editors.
Neither is it a trade paperback. The size of an A4 page or publication is (left and right side) 30 cm. So A4 is correct for this publication. Could you please revert the changes you made? Thanks.LeighBlackmore 01:38, 17 November 2019 (EST)
Hi Leigh, in ISFDB, A4 is a valid format only for magazines. For books, anything that is not a mass market paperback and is with soft cover is recorded as "tp". One of our quirks - don't think of "tp" as a standard trade paperback only - it is a catch all. You can mention that it is A4 in the notes. OK, 'quirk' noted. Let it be called a 'tp'. Unfortunately the entry seems to be screwed up (I don't know whether I did that or not). Steve Lines was one of the two illustrators of the collection. He provided artwork for front and back cover. (The other illustrator was Phillip Cornell who did internal illos). "The Arcana of Death" is by me, under my real name. "Exalted Are the Forces of Darkness" is also by me under my real name; the names against the story in this entry are those of the editors of the anthology "Gaslight Grotesque" (Edge Publishing, Canada), where that story first appeared in print. One of the editors of Studies in Australian Weird Fiction

Thanks for adding those! However, one of the editors here is given as Benjamin J. Szumsky, whereas the other two issues have Benjamin J. Szumskyj (with an appended 'j'). It seems possible that either of the two versions is a typo, so you might want to check on it.

I also changed the publisher to the already established 'Equilibrium' (Issue #3 still lacks an entry for this field), and have added an ',' to the titles, since that puts the issues into our 'trademark' issue grid. Thanks, Stonecreek 02:42, 14 November 2019 (EST)

Mythopoeia: The Newsletter of Dymocks Science Fiction & Fantasy

I accepted your submission of Mythopoeia: The Newsletter of Dymocks Science Fiction & Fantasy, but removed your note. Personal observations are generally not appropriate in the notes. You need to indicate the date and the volume/number, at least one of them in the title (to disambiguate the issue), and the other either in the title or in the note. I realize you likely produced a whole series of these pubs. You can enter all of them if you wish. The series can then have the note about what and why they were produced. I would hope you can set the dates for each issue, even if you no longer have a copy. Bob 13:05, 14 November 2019 (EST)

Adding essays

I see that you have a couple of essays added to the queue and these will need to be changed radically. Unless an essay is published as a separate book, they need to be added the other way around. You add the zine/magazine and you add the essay inside. We are a publication-based DB. I will convert those for you later tonight (putting them on hold now - need to check on eligibility as well so will need some time) and then come back with more explanations on what else we may need. Many thanks for your help with all this Annie. I will see what I can do about adding further details to the entries. Re amateur press association zines, technically the publisher of each zine is the author of the zine - the apa only distributes the combined mailings and so is not technically the 'publisher'. But I imagine making this distinction might present problems for ISFDB, so leaving Esoteric Order of Dagon as the publisher for 'Red Viscous Madness' will be near enough.LeighBlackmore 01:42, 17 November 2019 (EST)
