Welcome!

Hello, Kezzz, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 03:25, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Barker's Books of Blood 1-3

The submission to add this record was accepted, but some changes were made in order for it to comply with ISFDB standards (those standards are in the help pages linked in the Welcome section above).

  • The title was changed to match the OCLC record.
  • The date of publication was obtained from Amazon.co.uk
  • The publisher was changed to Little, Brown UK so that it won't be confused the the US publisher of the same name.
  • The page count field was changed from "481" to "149+150+182" based on the OCLC record which gives that each volume of the omnibus was separately paginated.
  • Binding was changed from "HB" to "hc", the ISFDB standard for hardcover

I also linked the image from Amazon.co.uk, and will be importing the contents from other ISFDB records. If you have this book, please check out the changes to see if they agree with your copy. If so, do a primary verification of the record (explained in a link in the Welcome section.) Thanks and welcome again to the ISFDB. Mhhutchins 03:49, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Adding books to the database and other guidelines

There have been some problems with your latest submissions:

  • When a title is already in the database, go to its record and click the link "Add Publication to This Title". Only use the "Add New Novel" etc. link on the main page if the copy is not in the database. Otherwise, you're creating a new title which will have to be merged with the existing title.
  • Use "hc" for hardcover publications, not "HC".
  • You must give the source for your data in the record's "Note" field unless you're working from a book in hand. In that case, you must let the moderator know in the "Note to Moderator" field.
  • You entered the link to the Amazon page for Danse Macabre. You should only enter the URL of the image in the Cover URL field.
  • Danse Macabre was entered as a NOVEL. It should be NONFICTION.

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 19:41, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Comments noted and acted upon. Apologies for the error with Danse Macabre.

Cover artist field

You should only give the name of the artist in the Artist1 field. If there is more than one artist responsible click on the "Add Artist" button. Do not add anything like "Illustration", "Cover Art", etc. Only the person's name. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:14, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Noted for future reference :)

Thinner

I accepted the submission to add this record, but had to change the author credit based on the OCLC record. Are you certain that the book is credited to Stephen King? All author and title credit must come from the title page of the book, so will you please check how it is credited there? Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:29, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Given on title page as 'Copyright © 1984 by Richard Backman'. Spelled exactly as given --Kezzz 17:30, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Are you certain that the copyright statement is on the title page? The title page is usually the recto (front side) of the copyright page. It normally only includes the title of the work, the author of the work, and the publisher of the book. Mhhutchins 18:28, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
My fault - tired, looked at wrong page. Given on title page as 'Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman'. --Kezzz 13:09, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for looking again. In cases like this ("A writing as B") we record the "B" credit in the author field of the publication record, and then variant its title record to one crediting the "A" author. I'll add the credit as shown in the record's note field. Thanks again. Mhhutchins 19:19, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Communicating between editors and moderators, and other important information

  • It is important to respond to questions left here on your talk page. Just click on the [edit] link to the right of the message. A dialog box will open. Enter your response, and then "sign" it using one of the icons at the top of the box (or enter four tildes.)
  • Do not use the "Note to Moderator" field to ask questions and to provide information about the book. That field should be used solely to provide information about the submission itself. Any questions should be asked at theHelp Desk (bookmark that page). Any data provided in the "Note to Moderator" field will be deleted once the submission has been accepted. If you want the data to be a permanent part of the record, you must add it to the "Note" field.
  • Another important page to bookmark: this is perhaps the most important help page and should provide you with most of the instructions you need to create and update records.
  • Remember, do not edit a record which has been Primary Verified before notifying the editor whose name is linked in the Verification Status list under Primary. Most active editors will have a notification preference statement at the top of their talk pages. Use that as a guideline to determine when, or if, you should make an edit which changes a Primary Verified record.Mhhutchins 16:38, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Protocols noted. Still learning but help appreciated ;) --Kezzz 17:23, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome. We fully understand that this is not easy for new editors, and know that it will take time to become more fluent in editing the database. We appreciate your contributions. Mhhutchins 18:40, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Stephen King Omnibus

Re this publication: Many sources give the title as Stephen King Omnibus 2. What is the exact title as given on the book's title page?

Also, I've changed the title from The Eyes Of The Dragon/Firestarter to The Eyes of the Dragon / Firestarter. You should use standard rules of capitalization (outlined on the help page I've linked above), and separate the titles with a space, a slash, and a space.

One last thing: when adding an omnibus, you have to add content records for each of the titles contained in the book. I'll add one for each novel. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:59, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

I've also added a publication date and sourced it in the Note field, and changed the name of the publisher to the ISFDB standard for the UK division of this publisher. Is there a price printed on the book? Mhhutchins 17:02, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Title given as 'Stephen King Omnibus', with 'The Eyes Of The Dragon' printed about an inch below, and 'Firestarter' printed about an inch below that. No price given, and book is not price-clipped. --Kezzz 17:36, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll update the record. BTW, per wiki standards, your response should follow immediately the previous message with no more than one blank line. You should add a colon (:) to the number in the previous response. (The second response will have one colon, the third response will have two colons, etc.) Also, the signature should be added at the end of the message without an intervening line. This may sound trivial, but it makes for easier reading of the discussion. (Look at the way this is displayed on the talk page.) Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 18:37, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
No probs, Noted for future ref, with thanks :) --Kezzz 13:13, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

The Stephen King Story

What are the two additional pages which you given in the page count field of this record? According to OCLC, there are 32 unnumbered pages of plates which are added to the page count field as "372+[32]". Mhhutchins 20:19, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Page count from 1-372 is main text of book + appendices + index. After page 372 there is a b/w illustration facing p372, and overleaf an un-numbered page with a quote from SK as below -

Q:How would you like to be remembered? Stephen King: As a good storyteller. -interview with Cosmopolitan magazine,1985 --Kezzz 08:15, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Agreed re the number of plates - 32 pages (Unnumbered) of b/w photographs --Kezzz 08:17, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Library of Congress CIP numbers

Hi. I accepted your submission of Stephen King Country and saw your note to the moderator about "Library of Congress CIP 98-66652". That is a piece of information we are interested in capturing, and it's appropriate to include it in the publication notes. Because we anticipate that someday we may turn that into another database field, we ask editors to record it as "LCCN: the-number" or "LCCN: <a href="the-perma-link">the-number</a>", which would allow us to find and extract them programmatically. So, in this case, I added:

LCCN: <a href="http://lccn.loc.gov/98066652">98-66652</a>

to the publication's notes. That provides this link: 98-66652. If you would like to make links, see Help:How_to_create_a_link_to_a_US_Library_of_Congress_(Loc)_record for more details about how to construct them. You're under no obligation to do that, but please do record the number if there is one. Thanks. --MartyD 15:24, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

No probs, Marty. Thanks for the info about LCCN - Always handy to be able to add extra verification :) --Kezzz 20:46, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

"Data from ..." notes and Horns

When you come across an entry that has a note such as "Data from Amazon..." or "Data from Locus1..." or anything about a source of data other than the book (we call such sources "secondary" sources), and you are working from the book, you should delete the note or make it more specific. If your book provides all of the information, delete the note entirely. If your book does not provide some of the information, modify the note to cite only the missing element(s) as coming from that source. For example, if your book had no stated publication date, you would change "Data from Amazon UK as of 2009-03-01" to "Publication date from Amazon UK as of 2013-04-12" (updating the date if you can access the secondary source and confirm it's still true, leaving the original date if you cannot access the secondary source). The underlying rule is that everything in the entry is understood to come from the publication unless noted otherwise, and all sources other than the publication itself must be cited.

One caveat about secondary sources and dates: If the publication states month and year, we stick with that (making the day be "00") and do not supply a day-specific date from another source. If the publication states only a year, it's ok to get the month from a secondary source.

So with that in mind, please revisit Horns. I accepted your changes, but the note about Amazon UK should be adjusted or removed, depending on what's in your book. If you have any questions or doubts, just ask. Thanks. --MartyD 15:38, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Marty. Just sorted this. All editing help appreciated, helps make me better :) --Kezzz 12:18, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Horns

Re this record: When you've done a primary verification of a record, you should only give the source for data which is not present in the actual publication. Can I assume you meant to say "Publication date" in the note field? Mhhutchins 15:11, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Yes (*shakes head at self in annoyance). Please excuse the typo - I had totally missed that. Apologies :) --Kezzz 09:43, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
