Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

A Study in Ugliness

Hello, and welcome. Apologies for the long delay in getting to your submission. I've accepted your submission, but there were several issues with it (I've corrected those):

  • Synopsis - if quoted verbatim, needs to be between quotes, and source & date added - see Synopsis rules for more details
  • Format, ISBN, price missing - I've added these from info on, and added a note
  • Source is mandatory - always add in the notes where you got your data from (I've done that for format, ISBN, price)
  • Image: copied URL from - check the rule for how to do that.

It is a good idea to check the information through the links provided in the welcome message above. If you'd have any further questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us on the Moderators, help desk or community portal pages. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 10:36, 10 November 2022 (EST)

Strange Horizons, 2 March 2020

I had to reject this one. We handle genre magazines differently than books - if a magazine is considered genre (and Strange Horizons definitely is), we index everything inside, regardless if it is genre related or not.

I also noticed that you tried to remove the page number while changing it - without it the order in the magazine will get broken (no page number sends a title at the top). If we have missing pieces of art from that issue, add them as separate entries but please do not remove ones that are already there - they need to be there. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. Annie (talk) 15:28, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Thanks, Annie, got it. A question though: how do I add the art DAPENHA did do for the issue (the illustration for "Rat and Finch are Friends", same title)? All the other illustrations for Strange Horizons are listed as "interior art", not cover art, but I was unsure of how to the actual interior cover if we also keep the example pieces in her interview. Alittlebook 19:06, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Add the artist name in the field for that (if you edit the publication, it sits between the notes and the regular titles). Then when approved, edit the record (it will be of type COVERART) to add the actual art name in the notes. Covers always carry the name (and language) of the publication they belong to. So for this one, the title will be "Strange Horizons, 2 March 2020" - all other names go into the Notes only. Now - you can always add it also as an INTERIORART and just leave it with its name (interior art is named with its proper title if one is available) but if it is commissioned as a cover, it is a cover after all. So... chose one option :) Annie (talk) 19:17, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Since Strange Horizons has a different format, and all the other pieces I found are listed as interior art (they appear only inside the title story), I think it would be better to keep it as interior art, then. One last question, though. Since it's within the "Rat and Finch are Friends" story, should I list the page as being "|3.1", considering the story is "|3"? And would it mess up if I list this under page "|4"/"|4.1" etc, since there is no way to squeeze the title between these pages? Again, thank you for your patience! Alittlebook (talk) 20:04, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Looking at this specific book - we have |3 followed by |4 (the interview at the bottom -- look through the whole page when looking at numbers because the interview and review sections show up separately but sort with the main titles) and then |4.1 for the next image in the main section. If you list it as |3.1, it will show up under the story, before the interview. If you list it as |2.9, it will show up above the story. You decide where you want it to show up and put it there. You do not want repeating numbers - the way the page sorts is based on the value after the | (a number of 3 is considered the same as 3|3 so you just write 3 if you want the number to show). The thing before the | is shown on the page - so we use it for page numbers for paper books; for ebooks and audio books, we use these for sorting only. Annie (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Ok, thank you! I did what you said, hope this works! :) Alittlebook (talk) 20:51, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Apparition Literary Magazine

When you have questions such as this one, post it on the Community board so people can assist you - sending it as an edit means that just one moderator will see it.

The answer is that it depends:

  • If they effectively form a webzine issue, you start a second magazine record for each of the webzine issues, form a series of them and then connect the two series/magazines via the notes or via a common parent.
  • If they are just posted on the site randomly, they are not eligible to be added under the current rules of acquisition.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. Annie (talk) 15:32, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Got it, thank you! Alittlebook (talk) 19:08, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Ok, I checked on their website: their flash fiction are a separate entity to their normal issues, and are connected to their monthly flash fiction contest (each month, a flash fiction piece wins and is published on their website). Can a second magazine record be created for their contest ('Apparition Flash Fiction Contest", I suppose), or is it ineligible? If isn't, how could this be made? Alittlebook (talk) 00:18, 13 April 2023 (EDT)
The rules of acquisition under 4.2.3 Excluded, #2 exclude this unless one of the six bullet points under electronic publications 4.2.1 Included apply. Points 1,2,3 and 6 fail, 5 does not apply. That leaves point 4 "Webzines, which are defined as online periodicals with distinct issues (note that online periodicals without distinct issues are not considered webzines)". I think we have distinct issues. The publisher solicits submissions, on a specific topic, monthly. The submissions must be under 1,000 words to differentiate them from works published in the quarterly magazine (1,000 - 5,000 words). I don't consider this a contest either. The renumeration is for publishing rights, not prize money. The fact that only one story is published strikes me the same as any other publication. One, four, or twenty, what's the difference.
If no one objects to its inclusion, I suggest "Apparition Literary Flash Fiction" for the periodical name and 'Marie Baca Villa' as editor (Perhaps we can confirm this via email). "Apparition Literary" is the logical parent, with the magazine in position 1. John Scifibones 14:45, 13 April 2023 (EDT)
That sounds like a plan. Whoever adds it, add notes explaining the format and all that -- so someone does not decide to just delete it as not eligible. Annie (talk) 13:18, 14 April 2023 (EDT)
Sounds great, thank you two, I'll try to add it like this next week. One last question: How to make the "Apparition Literary Flash Fiction" page be under the quarterly Apparition Literary parent page? Or is something only the moderators can do, and I should just make a note? Alittlebook (talk) 17:38, 14 April 2023 (EDT)

(unindent) Moderator privileges were not required but I thought it would be easier to create one issue to illustrate.

  1. Here is the submission to create the parent and put the magazine in position 1.
  2. Added 6 April 2023 issue which also created the new series.
  3. This submission linked the new series to the parent created in step #1

Here is the result. I'll leave the rest to you, let me know if you have any questions. John Scifibones 19:23, 14 April 2023 (EDT)

Perfect, thank you, John. Alittlebook (talk) 00:33, 15 April 2023 (EDT)
I approved your submission adding the 30 October 2019 issue. Don't forget the series when you add each issue. Also, the format is webzine. I added both for you. John Scifibones 10:51, 20 April 2023 (EDT)

Partial contents

When adding partial content to a magazine or a collection/anthology, always add the incomplete template into the notes. That will allow for other editors to know that there are missing pieces that still need adding. We do not use it for empty issues because we can find these easily but once you add one story and you know that more are eligible to be added, we need the template. See how I added it here: click edit and see the text in the Notes field to see how this text is produced. Thanks! Annie (talk) 15:35, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Got it, thanks! Alittlebook (talk) 19:09, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Transliterated Titles

Hi Alittlebook -

I've noticed that you have been entering a number of publication with entries in Transliterated Title that exactly match the text in the Title field. This is not necessary. The purpose of the Transliterated Title field is to reflect a Romanized version of the title when the Title contains non-Latin alphabet/script. See this template. I have been deleting the transliterated titles when they don't contain non-Latin characters, or where they do (mainly diacriticals), I have updated them with the correct characters. Thanks for your edits, but you may want to keep this in mind going forward. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:20, 15 May 2023 (EDT)

My apologies, I thought they were obligatory! Thanks for the heads-up, I'll keep this in mind. :) Alittlebook (talk) 14:31, 15 May 2023 (EDT)

Currency symbols

Remember to not put a space after currency symbols, and use a period/stop instead of a comma (e.g., "R$20.00", not "R$ 20,00"). You can read more about this here and here. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:43, 18 May 2023 (EDT)
