Welcome!

Hello, Alittlebook, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! MagicUnk (talk) 09:38, 10 November 2022‎ (EST)

A Study in Ugliness

Hello, and welcome. Apologies for the long delay in getting to your submission. I've accepted your submission, but there were several issues with it (I've corrected those):

  • Synopsis - if quoted verbatim, needs to be between quotes, and source & date added - see Synopsis rules for more details
  • Format, ISBN, price missing - I've added these from info on Amazon.com, and added a note
  • Source is mandatory - always add in the notes where you got your data from (I've done that for format, ISBN, price)
  • Image: copied URL from Amazon.com - check the rule for how to do that.

It is a good idea to check the information through the links provided in the welcome message above. If you'd have any further questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us on the Moderators, help desk or community portal pages. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 10:36, 10 November 2022 (EST)

Strange Horizons, 2 March 2020

I had to reject this one. We handle genre magazines differently than books - if a magazine is considered genre (and Strange Horizons definitely is), we index everything inside, regardless if it is genre related or not.

I also noticed that you tried to remove the page number while changing it - without it the order in the magazine will get broken (no page number sends a title at the top). If we have missing pieces of art from that issue, add them as separate entries but please do not remove ones that are already there - they need to be there. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. Annie (talk) 15:28, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Thanks, Annie, got it. A question though: how do I add the art DAPENHA did do for the issue (the illustration for "Rat and Finch are Friends", same title)? All the other illustrations for Strange Horizons are listed as "interior art", not cover art, but I was unsure of how to the actual interior cover if we also keep the example pieces in her interview. Alittlebook 19:06, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Add the artist name in the field for that (if you edit the publication, it sits between the notes and the regular titles). Then when approved, edit the record (it will be of type COVERART) to add the actual art name in the notes. Covers always carry the name (and language) of the publication they belong to. So for this one, the title will be "Strange Horizons, 2 March 2020" - all other names go into the Notes only. Now - you can always add it also as an INTERIORART and just leave it with its name (interior art is named with its proper title if one is available) but if it is commissioned as a cover, it is a cover after all. So... chose one option :) Annie (talk) 19:17, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Since Strange Horizons has a different format, and all the other pieces I found are listed as interior art (they appear only inside the title story), I think it would be better to keep it as interior art, then. One last question, though. Since it's within the "Rat and Finch are Friends" story, should I list the page as being "|3.1", considering the story is "|3"? And would it mess up if I list this under page "|4"/"|4.1" etc, since there is no way to squeeze the title between these pages? Again, thank you for your patience! Alittlebook (talk) 20:04, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Looking at this specific book - we have |3 followed by |4 (the interview at the bottom -- look through the whole page when looking at numbers because the interview and review sections show up separately but sort with the main titles) and then |4.1 for the next image in the main section. If you list it as |3.1, it will show up under the story, before the interview. If you list it as |2.9, it will show up above the story. You decide where you want it to show up and put it there. You do not want repeating numbers - the way the page sorts is based on the value after the | (a number of 3 is considered the same as 3|3 so you just write 3 if you want the number to show). The thing before the | is shown on the page - so we use it for page numbers for paper books; for ebooks and audio books, we use these for sorting only. Annie (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Ok, thank you! I did what you said, hope this works! :) Alittlebook (talk) 20:51, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Apparition Literary Magazine

When you have questions such as this one, post it on the Community board so people can assist you - sending it as an edit means that just one moderator will see it.

The answer is that it depends:

  • If they effectively form a webzine issue, you start a second magazine record for each of the webzine issues, form a series of them and then connect the two series/magazines via the notes or via a common parent.
  • If they are just posted on the site randomly, they are not eligible to be added under the current rules of acquisition.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. Annie (talk) 15:32, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Got it, thank you! Alittlebook (talk) 19:08, 12 April 2023 (EDT)
Ok, I checked on their website: their flash fiction are a separate entity to their normal issues, and are connected to their monthly flash fiction contest (each month, a flash fiction piece wins and is published on their website). Can a second magazine record be created for their contest ('Apparition Flash Fiction Contest", I suppose), or is it ineligible? If isn't, how could this be made? Alittlebook (talk) 00:18, 13 April 2023 (EDT)
The rules of acquisition under 4.2.3 Excluded, #2 exclude this unless one of the six bullet points under electronic publications 4.2.1 Included apply. Points 1,2,3 and 6 fail, 5 does not apply. That leaves point 4 "Webzines, which are defined as online periodicals with distinct issues (note that online periodicals without distinct issues are not considered webzines)". I think we have distinct issues. The publisher solicits submissions, on a specific topic, monthly. The submissions must be under 1,000 words to differentiate them from works published in the quarterly magazine (1,000 - 5,000 words). I don't consider this a contest either. The renumeration is for publishing rights, not prize money. The fact that only one story is published strikes me the same as any other publication. One, four, or twenty, what's the difference.
If no one objects to its inclusion, I suggest "Apparition Literary Flash Fiction" for the periodical name and 'Marie Baca Villa' as editor (Perhaps we can confirm this via email). "Apparition Literary" is the logical parent, with the magazine in position 1. John Scifibones 14:45, 13 April 2023 (EDT)
That sounds like a plan. Whoever adds it, add notes explaining the format and all that -- so someone does not decide to just delete it as not eligible. Annie (talk) 13:18, 14 April 2023 (EDT)
Sounds great, thank you two, I'll try to add it like this next week. One last question: How to make the "Apparition Literary Flash Fiction" page be under the quarterly Apparition Literary parent page? Or is something only the moderators can do, and I should just make a note? Alittlebook (talk) 17:38, 14 April 2023 (EDT)

(unindent) Moderator privileges were not required but I thought it would be easier to create one issue to illustrate.

  1. Here is the submission to create the parent and put the magazine in position 1.
  2. Added 6 April 2023 issue which also created the new series.
  3. This submission linked the new series to the parent created in step #1

Here is the result. I'll leave the rest to you, let me know if you have any questions. John Scifibones 19:23, 14 April 2023 (EDT)

Perfect, thank you, John. Alittlebook (talk) 00:33, 15 April 2023 (EDT)
I approved your submission adding the 30 October 2019 issue. Don't forget the series when you add each issue. Also, the format is webzine. I added both for you. John Scifibones 10:51, 20 April 2023 (EDT)

Partial contents

When adding partial content to a magazine or a collection/anthology, always add the incomplete template into the notes. That will allow for other editors to know that there are missing pieces that still need adding. We do not use it for empty issues because we can find these easily but once you add one story and you know that more are eligible to be added, we need the template. See how I added it here: click edit and see the text in the Notes field to see how this text is produced. Thanks! Annie (talk) 15:35, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Got it, thanks! Alittlebook (talk) 19:09, 12 April 2023 (EDT)

Transliterated Titles

Hi Alittlebook -

I've noticed that you have been entering a number of publication with entries in Transliterated Title that exactly match the text in the Title field. This is not necessary. The purpose of the Transliterated Title field is to reflect a Romanized version of the title when the Title contains non-Latin alphabet/script. See this template. I have been deleting the transliterated titles when they don't contain non-Latin characters, or where they do (mainly diacriticals), I have updated them with the correct characters. Thanks for your edits, but you may want to keep this in mind going forward. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:20, 15 May 2023 (EDT)

My apologies, I thought they were obligatory! Thanks for the heads-up, I'll keep this in mind. :) Alittlebook (talk) 14:31, 15 May 2023 (EDT)

Currency symbols

Remember to not put a space after currency symbols, and use a period/stop instead of a comma (e.g., "R$20.00", not "R$ 20,00"). You can read more about this here and here. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:43, 18 May 2023 (EDT)

Utopia Award for Under Pressure

A quick note about this submission. It would have added an Award record to the CHAPBOOK title as opposed to the SHORTFICTION/novella title. CHAPBOOKs, as Help:Screen:NewPub explains, are:

  • a unique ISFDB designation for a separate publication of a single work of SHORTFICTION (q.v.), a single POEM or a single SERIAL installment of a longer work. In addition to the single SHORTFICTION, POEM or SERIAL content record, such publications may also contain one or more ESSAY and INTERIORART content records.

In other words, CHAPBOOKs are standalone appearances of shorter works. They are similar to COLLECTIONs and ANTHOLOGYs except that they "collect" a single fiction title.

On rare occasion, awards are given explicitly to CHAPBOOKs, e.g. to a notable standalone edition of a work of short fiction. However, 99% of the time short fiction awards should be linked to their SHORTFICTION titles, which I did a few minutes ago -- please see the SHORTFICTION title record for results.

Thanks for submitting Utopia Award nominations/wins! Ahasuerus (talk) 16:43, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

Thanks for the headsup! I'm always getting those mixed up, I'll pay more attention with my nexts edits. Alittlebook (talk) 17:21, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

Utopia Award nomination for Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction

Regarding this submission, it would have created a Utopia Award nomination for the parent title, which credits one of the editors as "Ekpeki Oghenechovwe Donald", this author/editor's canonical name within the ISFDB database. However, the nomination actually uses the "Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki" form of the name, which is how he was credited in the book. As per Help:Screen:AddAward:

  • For awards given to variant titles or translations, make sure to have the correct variant title displayed.

I have rejected the submission and entered a nomination record for the variant title. Thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 17:17, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

Same as above, I'll be more careful next time! Alittlebook (talk) 17:21, 17 October 2023 (EDT)
No worries, there is definitely a learning curve! :-) Ahasuerus (talk) 17:30, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

COVERART award for Hexagon

A question about this submission. It would create a nomination record for this title record, which is associated with Issue 10 of the magazine. However, the nomination page says "HEXAGON ISSUE 9 COVER ART Will Tempest (Hexagon Magazine)", which is apparently this issue. Was this intentional or an accident? Thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 17:33, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

Neither of those two, my bad. It's this cover, as seen here (it says "Cephalopod Heart" in the cover and the award list (it's for the 2022 awards, not the 2023).
Oh, I see. Added, thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 21:48, 17 October 2023 (EDT)

Sci Phi Journal, 2021Q4

A question about this submission. It would create a nomination record for the COVERART title associated with Sci Phi Journal, 2021Q4. However, the Android Press list links to Sci Phi Journal, 2021/3, which apparently has a different cover. Is this by design or a misclick? Thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:49, 19 October 2023 (EDT)

"Superbloom"

A quick note about this nomination. The original submission used "Utopian Anthology/Collection" as the Award Category, but the title is actually a short story and that's how it's listed on the Android Press Web site, so I have changed the category to "Utopian Short Story". Hopefully everything looks OK. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:56, 19 October 2023 (EDT)

Pantokrátor

A few things re: Pantokrátor. I have approved the submission, but there are a few issues that we may need to correct:

  • Is the source of the entered data Amazon Brazil? If so, we should mention it in Notes.
  • The format of this publication appears to be "tp" as opposed to "pb". Amazon states that the dimensions are "16 x 1.7 x 23 cm" and Help:Screen:NewPub says:
    • Any other book that is at least 7.25" (or 19 cm) tall, or at least 4.5" (11.5 cm) wide/deep, and is not a hardback, should be entered as "tp".
  • The submitted ISBN is 6599083404, i.e. the book's ISBN-10. Books published after 2006/2007, which is when publisher started running out of ISBN-10s, use ISBN-13s. ISBN-13s that start with "978" (like this one) can be converted to corresponding ISBN-10s, but ISBN-13s that start with "979" can't be converted. For this reason whenever an ISBN-13 is available, we use it instead of its ISBN-10 counterpart.

Does this make sense? If so, please submit corrections/adjustments. TIA. Ahasuerus (talk) 14:29, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

Have you had a chance to review this publication record? Ahasuerus (talk) 21:24, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
Sorry, I missed this one. You are right, it is "tp", since we don't have these naming conventions, we just call every soft cover "paperback", but it is indeed "tp". And yes, my source was Amazon Brazil, I'll adjust it in a minute. Alittlebook (talk) 21:44, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
Approved, thanks. For what it's worth, the "pb" format, which was dominant in the US between (roughly) 1960 and 2000, is in decline -- see the bottom graph on this page for details. Ahasuerus (talk) 22:08, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

SHORTFICTION/CHAPBOOK awards

I have put the following submissions which would link "Prêmio Argos / Argos Award" nominations to CHAPBOOK titles on hold:

Is it safe to assume that they should be linked to their respective SHORTFICTION titles instead? Ahasuerus (talk) 15:01, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

Yes to both! I first added Senciente Nível 5 to the award, then went back to it and realized it was categorized wrong (it's a novella, not a novel), the other was my mistake. Alittlebook (talk) 16:06, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for clarifying. I have approved the new "A feiticeira de São Judas Tadeu dos Milagres" submission, but the new "Senciente Nível 5" submission looks odd. The award category is "Melhor Coletânea/Antologia (Best Anthology/Collected Works)", but the linked title is a novella. Was it a typo? Ahasuerus (talk) 16:24, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
Ugh, I think the problem might be my touchpad (it's a novella--I click on "Melhor Romance" but it clicks back to "Melhor Antologia") Alittlebook (talk) 16:26, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
Approved, thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 16:46, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

Back in the USSR: um thriller surrealista

Just a note that I have approved this submission, but changed the category from "Melhor Coletânea/Antologia (Best Anthology/Collected Works)" to "Melhor Romance (Best Novel/Novella)" as per the Wayback Machine. Ahasuerus (talk) 15:28, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

Yes, it's a novel, I must have clicked wrong in the menu, my bad. Alittlebook (talk) 16:07, 2 November 2023 (EDT)
No problem, that's why we have the moderation system in place :-) Ahasuerus (talk) 16:25, 2 November 2023 (EDT)

Interzone, #295, Sep 2023

Just to let you know that I have put this submission on hold. Another editor left a note on the primary verifier's Talk page a few hours ago, so let's wait for the verifier to chime in. Ahasuerus (talk) 22:27, 3 November 2023 (EDT)

The primary verifier has now confirmed that it was a data entry error. I have approved the submission; thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 09:08, 4 November 2023 (EDT)

Mafagafo

The "Title Merge" submission was fine and has been approved -- here is the result.

The final step will be to change the value of the "Title" field from "Mafagafo, Edição 5 (Julho 2022)" to "Mafagafo - 2022" and the value of the "Date" field from "2022-03-00" to "2022-00-00". I could do it myself, but it would be better if you could create a submission to get a feel for how it's done. Ahasuerus (talk) 21:55, 4 November 2023 (EDT)

I see that you have already created a submission to change the "Title" field. Please go ahead and create another one to change the date to "2022-00-00". Ahasuerus (talk) 21:56, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
Ops, sorry I missed it! Will do so ASAP. Alittlebook (talk) 22:05, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
Approved, thanks. I have done the same thing to the 2021 EDITOR record even though it has only one issue for now. Ahasuerus (talk) 22:38, 4 November 2023 (EDT)

Soraya/Sol Coelho

I have this submission on hold pending a clarification. As per the ISFDB FAQ:

  • Once it has been confirmed that two or more author names refer to the same person and that the connections are publicly known, one name is selected as the author's "canonical" name and the rest are designated "alternate names". The name chosen to be the canonical name is the most recognized name for the author within the SF genre.

Which one of these two names would you say is "the most recognized name for the author within the SF genre" in this case? Ahasuerus (talk) 22:00, 4 November 2023 (EDT)

Sol Coelho, for sure. The author used to go by Soraya and published a couple of stories in the past with such name, but the bulk of his work (that I'll add eventually while I add more Lusophone fiction) has been under Sol Coelho. Alittlebook (talk) 22:04, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for clarifying. I have approved the submission and the two author records are now linked.
The next step will be to turn the "Soraya Coelho" title ("Mal de ojo") into a variant under the "Sol Coelho" name. It may seem redundant since we already have the two names linked, but mismatches between titles and names occur surprisingly frequently, often due to "house names" like Alexander Blade. For this reason we have one mechanism for "alternate names" and another mechanism for "variant titles". Hope this makes sense. Ahasuerus (talk) 22:43, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
This is to create a "[only as Soraya Coelho]", right? I was wondering exactly how to do that: is it with Make This Title a Variant or Add a Variant to This Title? Alittlebook (talk) 22:53, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
It's "Make This Title a Variant". Help:Screen:MakeVariant has a walkthrough. Please note that you will want to use the instructions in the second section, "Marking a title record so that it's a variant title of a title that does not exist yet in ISFDB". Hopefully they are reasonably straightforward. Ahasuerus (talk) 23:46, 4 November 2023 (EDT)
Ok, I read the walkthrough but just to be sure I'm making the right thing, since I'm unsure of what to do regarding the canonical author name: Go to ("Mal de ojo") -> Make Variant Title -> Option 2 -> Put the alternate name of Sol Coelho used in this story (Soraya Coelho)? Since the walkthrough says to enter the alternate name rather than changing it to the canonical name, just repeating the info will automatically connect it to the canonical name Sol Coelho? Sorry for being rather slow with this, but thank you for your imense patience with teaching me all this stuff so far, I love this site and it's being great fun contributing to it :) Alittlebook (talk) 14:12, 5 November 2023 (EST)
Glad to hear you are enjoying your time here! And yes, your description is substantially correct. In this case all you need to do is pull up the "Make This Title a Variant" data entry form, scroll down to Option 2 and change the value of the "Author" field from Soraya Coelho (an alternate name) to Sol Coelho, this author's canonical name. Different scenarios may require changing the language (when linking translations to original titles), the title type (when linking serializations to their parent NOVEL or SHORTFICTION titles), etc, but this is a very simple case. Ahasuerus (talk) 14:58, 5 November 2023 (EST)
The Variant Title submission has been approved. Everything looked fine. Ahasuerus (talk) 17:32, 5 November 2023 (EST)

Merging duplicate titles and using templates in Notes

When entering new publications, we often end up with two (or more) title records for the same work. Laura Pohl's Summary page is a recent example -- note the two separate titles for "A Morte do Diabo". When this happens, you can click "Check for Duplicate Titles" under "Editing Tools" and it will create a list of potential duplicates for the displayed author. Similar "Check for Duplicate Titles" links are available on Title and Publication pages. All Duplicate pages let you merge titles. For identical titles, merging is a straightforward process. Help:How to merge titles provides detailed instructions for handling more complicated scenarios. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:09, 5 November 2023 (EST)

The Title Merge submission has been approved, thanks. Ahasuerus (talk) 15:00, 5 November 2023 (EST)

Also, since you are entering fiction editors in the Note field, you may want to take a look at Help:Using Templates and HTML in Note Fields. One template in particular, "A" (listed under "Linking Templates"), may be of help since it automatically links author names to their Summary pages, e.g. {{A|Jules Verne}}. Ahasuerus (talk) 12:09, 5 November 2023 (EST)
