Welcome!

Hello, Penprince, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 03:47, 24 September 2019 (EDT)

Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores

Hello, and thanks for becoming active. However, I had to put your first submission on hold: we already have issuses of that magazine, for example here, but with an editor's name spelled a bit differently. In any case, the issue no. has to be specified. Please leave a comment on the editor and the issue in question (you can answer right here on your talk page; please don't forget to sign it with four '~'. Thanks, Stonecreek 03:53, 24 September 2019 (EDT)

The editor's name is Fran Eisemann. Issue with the story in question is April 2018 Penprince 11:04, 25 September 2019 (EDT)

Thanks! However, as the example shows, this magazine seems to have been published on a more frequent schedule than monthly. Do you happen to know the exact day? Stonecreek 06:26, 27 September 2019 (EDT)

April 23 2018 Penprince 15:42, 27 September 2019 (EDT)

Thanks for the information! This way the issue could be put into the magazine grid. Stonecreek 11:15, 28 September 2019 (EDT)
And thanks for your author update! I have changed the legal name (& the directory entry) according to the way ISFDB has it: surname, forename (for the legal name) and surname (for the directory entry), assuming Oghenechovwe (& not Donald) is your surname. Stonecreek 06:03, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

Thanks. Oghenechovwe is my first name actually. Donald is a middle name. Surname is Ekpeki. Thanks Penprince 08:43, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

If someone is looking for your book in a library/catalog/bookstore, will be filed under Ekpeki? If so, this is what we want in the Directory field :) Annie 15:04, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

Adding magazines

Thanks for the new input! However, it is easier to reject your submission and install a new one, than to change the fields one by one. Most of all, we are a publication-founded database, so the title of the publication should go into the title field, not the title of one of the contents. Please take some time to study the help on entering publications (or take a look into an existing publication: as it happens, we already have one other issue of Selene Quarterly in the db, and I'll enter your proposal according to that example). Stonecreek 12:53, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

The Witching Hour

Hello,

I've linked the nomination record to the story :) Annie 14:55, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

Alright. Thanks Penprince 14:56, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

We're Here Now: A Conversation with Derek Lubangakene and Ekpeki Oghenechovwe

I fixed the interviewee for We're Here Now: A Conversation with Derek Lubangakene and Ekpeki Oghenechovwe so it now properly shows up on Ekpeki Oghenechovwe Donald. Thanks for pointing this out. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:05, 26 April 2020 (EDT)

Traditional Beliefs and Dystopic Futures

I'm holding your addition for "Traditional Beliefs and Dystopic Futures". Did this appear in a genre publication? I can only find the appearance on the africaindialogue.com website. That does not appear to be a webzine, much less a genre one. We would only include the interview if it appeared in a catalogable publications (see ISFDB:Policy#Rules of Acquisition). Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:14, 26 April 2020 (EDT)

Your name, and '5 Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian Stories by African Authors'

Hello, I have your submissions on hold for a moment, because I have a couple of questions.

  1. You want to update the legal name of your author record. However, as legal name must be in lastname, first name(s) format, I suspect it has to be Ekpeki, Oghenechovwe Donald (Ekpeki being your last name, and Oghenechovwe Donald your first names). Do I assume correctly?
In addition, you want to remove the links to your twitter page and strangehorizons article. Could you explain why you want them removed? These links are valid and public as far as I am concerned, so they shouldn't be deleted.
  2. You've listed your review article over at Tor.com, but I believe we only register fiction, not (review) articles. I've posted a question over at the Moderator's Forum to request other moderators input. If the consensus is we don't register this non-fiction Tor.com contents, then I'll have to reject your submission.

Regards, MagicUnk 14:43, 21 June 2020 (EDT)

I saw about the Tor non-fiction. Its fine to leave it out then. I guess we can leave the Strange Horizons and twitter too. I just thought my website address would be more appropriate. But I guess it won't be too much. I thought it would be. If I can add my website and email and still leave those then I would like to. Meanwhile my name, was written wrong before. My first name is Oghenechovwe, middle name Donald, surname Ekpeki. So it should actually be written as Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki. Thanks for your response. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Penprince (talkcontribs) .

Hello, as confirmed here, I had to reject your submission of the non-fiction Tor.com contents, as we do not index these. Likewise, I've rejected your update of your author record, but have updated your email address, and have added your full, legal name, and added your website URL (without removing the already existing twitter and strangehorizons URL's). Have a look here, and let me know if it's OK like this - or you can make further edits, as you like.
As an aside, when replying here, you can use one or more colons ':' to indent your reply. And also, please do sign your messages with three tildes (~~~~) at the end.
Oh, and finally, I missed it the first time around, but I noticed your date of birth is given as 000-01-19, which is a bit unusual. Would you mind updating your year of birth (no obligation)? Thank you very much in advance. Regards, MagicUnk 14:12, 24 June 2020 (EDT)

"Hi. Thanks for the revisions. They are all alright. Except I have anxiety with revealing my age in public. The year, not the date. So that's why I put that like that. Sorry for not signing my messages. I had forgotten how."

Penprince 12:48, 25 June 2020 (EDT)

Hey, no worries! :) It's all right. If you do not want your birth year to be public, that is perfectly fine. Have a nice day, regards, MagicUnk 14:40, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

Dominion

Hello. I've accepted your submission of Dominion but had to make a few corrections:

  • If you add an anthology, add all editors as authors-I've added Zelda Knight next to your name.
  • Also, editors and authors need to be entered exactly as they appear on or in the book - I've changed your name to Ekpeki Oghenechovwe Donald (even though I understand that is not correct, cfr. our earlier conversation).
  • I've updated the format from 'unknown' to ebook, as that's the format for the ISBN that you've entered
  • I've moved the number of pages to the notes, as page numbers are quite meaningless for ebooks
  • The Amazon image URL is incorrect as-is (as you may have noticed when you submitted your entry). It needs removal of the formatting info (that formatting ifo looks like _SL1500_ or similar, at the end of the URL). I've corrected that for you too.
  • You've entered a title series number. However, this publication is rather a part of a publication series, so should have been in the pub series fields (granted, the distinction is not always clear-cut). I've moved the series number to the pub series number and entered a series name as well - I've chosen 'Anthology of Speculative Fiction from Africa and the African Diaspora'. Feel free to update it if you prefer another pub series title.
  • Finally, I've added some additional notes, and added the foreword by Tananarive Due to the Contents section as an essay

Have a look and let me know what you think. Regards, MagicUnk 15:23, 20 August 2020 (EDT)

It looks all good, save for one small detail. Ife-Iyoku, Tale of Imadeyunuagbon is listed as a short story instead of a novella. It's an 18k word novella. That's all. And thanks! Penprince 22:36, 20 August 2020 (EDT)

You're welcome! I've updated the Ife-Iyoku story to novella. Regards, MagicUnk 01:43, 21 August 2020 (EDT)
I've fixed my mistake and I've reverted my varianting of Ife-Iyoku, Tale of Imadeyunuagbon with Ife-Iyoku. Sorry about that. Regards, MagicUnk 15:15, 25 August 2020 (EDT)

About your guest post on the Uncanny Magazine blog

Hello. I'm afraid I've had to reject your submission as a blog post is not eligible for inclusion in the ISFDB. The blog in and of itself is not part of the Uncanny Magazine, nor can it be considered a webzine. For details, see Rules of Acquisition. Specifically, the Excluded section states ...Works published in a web-based publication and available exclusively as a Web page -- such as blogs, author-run sites, fan fiction, web serials, etc... [are excluded]. Regards, MagicUnk 07:42, 24 August 2020 (EDT)

Your interview in Strange Horizons

Hello. I had to reject your submission of the interview Blackness is Not Monolithic as only submitting a single title is not the right way to submit this interview. Instead, and since the ISFDB is publication based, you should have submitted the entirety of the August 24th Strange Horizons webzine, with the interview as part of the overall contents of this publication. Have a look here for how I've done it. Regards, MagicUnk 07:15, 25 August 2020 (EDT)

Seen. Thanks Penprince 07:54, 25 August 2020 (EDT)

Omenana, August 2020

Hello,

First - thanks for adding this one. Magazines can be a bit tricky so I had to do some changes to bring the record back to policy)

  • As we are adding each issue individually, a title of "Omenana Magazine" is not useful so I added the Issue number and month
  • We date magazines based on their cover dates and not when they get published. So this one is 2020-08 and not 2020-08-31.
  • There was a small capitalization issue in one of the stories - we standartize title capitalization :)
  • It was marked as unknown format. In this case, we know it is both an ebook and a webzine. In such cases we will record both of these as separate issues so I made this one webzine (as it is out) and will clone for the PDF when/if it gets published.

The result is here and please let me know if you have any questions. Annie 02:19, 9 September 2020 (EDT)

Slay: Stories of the Vampire Noire

I accepted your addition of Slay: Stories of the Vampire Noire, but made some changes to match ISFDB standard:

  • ISBN: I changed the ISBN from an ISBN10 to an ISBN13. Since 2007, books have used the ISBN13 format.
  • Format: I changed the format from ebook to trade paperback. The ISBN, page count, & price given is for the paper version, not the ebook.
  • Image URL: I removed the extraneous characters (everything between & including the underscores) from the Amazon URL.
  • Pub Note: I changed the source of data to Amazon. The publisher's website doesn't list any information on this pub and simply is a link to Amazon.
  • Author Credits: Authors with initials in their names should have spaces after the periods (so K. R. S. McEntire).

I have also cloned this version to make the hardcover and ebook versions. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:39, 7 November 2020 (EST)

Invictus Quarterly cover

For cover images, we can only use an external link if we have an agreement with the hosting site. You can see the list of approved sites here. I have fixed this entry so it uses an image I just uploaded to ISFDB for the cover. In the future, please either upload a cover image to ISFDB, or use only those sites listed. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:21, 12 November 2020 (EST)

Galxy's Edge November 2021 submission

I have rejected your submission because it was entered incorrectly, and it would be faster to start over and submit an entry with contents in the correct places. For example, you had all the contributors listed as editors of the magazine rather than entering individual stories and essays to the contents of the issue. Please review this issue to see how things should be entered. If you have questions, please let me know. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:43, 16 December 2021 (EST)
