Welcome!

Hello, Oranges, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!.--Dirk P Broer 21:05, 3 February 2020 (EST)

Deleting links

Hi, I've rejected your submission as A. the link is valid and B. you did not state a reason to delete the link.--Dirk P Broer 21:30, 3 February 2020 (EST)

Tolkien's World: Paintings of Middle-Earth

As it turned out, we have the UK versions of the correct book as well -- so I connected this one with them. The author comes from the OCLC record but you were correct that this is the art book. Thanks for finding the problem! Annie 22:55, 20 May 2020 (EDT)

Pen names, pseudonyms, and name variations

Hi. I saw your question about how to link James Wilde and Mark Chadbourn. ISFDB handles true pen names/pseudonyms, translated names, and alternate spellings all the same way, using what is called "Alternate Names". We pick one name to be the "Canonical Name" -- this is almost always the name/spelling most frequently used, not necessarily the real or full/formal name -- and we make the others alternates. Then we make each work credited to one of the alternate names a variant of a "parent" record of the same title but credited to what we've chosen as the canonical name. Some of the software also labels the canonical name a "parent" name.

So here, where Wilde has but one title credited and Chadbourn has many, we'd choose Chadbourn as the canonical name and have Wilde be the alternate.

You can try to do this if you'd like:

  1. Follow that James Wilde link.
  2. Click on "Make /Remove Alternate Name" in the Editing Tools section at the left.
  3. In the box that appears, enter Mark Chadbourn in the Parent Name field, supply any information you want to tell the moderator, and submit.

This will get reviewed by a moderator, so it's safe to do. And without having to wait for the submission to be approved, also deal with that one title.

  1. Go back to James Wilde's page.
  2. Click on the Pendragon link.
  3. Click on "Make This Title a Variant" in the Editing Tools section at the left.
  4. Scroll down to the Option 2 section, and change "James Wilde" there to "Mark Chadbourn", add any notes if you wish, and submit.

Again, this will get reviewed. What it will do is make a "Pendragon" credited to "Mark Chadbourn". When both of these get accepted, what will happen is the James Wilde page will be empty and will carry a notice saying "James Wilde is used as an alternate name by Mark Chadbourn". The Mark Chadbourn page will include "James Wilde" in the list of alternate names used by Mark Chadbourn, and in the bibliography will be "Pendragon" with an annotation "only as by James Wilde" (if we had a publication where Pendragon appeared credited to Chadbourn, the annotation would change to read "also as by James Wilde").

It's pretty easy once you get used to the concepts. Give it a try!

One last request: Instead of creating empty submissions, better ways to get help are to post general how-to questions on the Help Desk and anything requiring moderator assistance on the Moderator Noticeboard. You'll reach a wider audience and get help more quickly that way, plus answers will benefit others needing help with the same thing.

If you have any questions, need any further help, or want me to take care of Wilde and Chadbourn, just reply here. Thanks. --MartyD 07:01, 22 June 2020 (EDT) Thanks. --MartyD 07:01, 22 June 2020 (EDT)

Hi again. I rejected your submission (which wasn't editing anything) and made the changes I described above. See James Wilde and Mark Chadbourn. Please augment/correct. Thanks. --MartyD 07:20, 12 July 2020 (EDT)
