Welcome!

Hello, Mbh tx2000, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 06:45, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Dead But Dreaming 2

Thanks for uploading a cover image for this anthology! I thought you might have difficulties in adding the image to the actual publication, as most of us had in the beginning, so I've done that for you (I also had to resize the image since due to disk space no dimension should exceed the limit of 600 pixels). For future submissions: it's done by entering the URL that you find by clicking on the link just below the image to the respective field of the publication in question that you reach by editing the pub.

If there are some more contents to add or notes worthy to state it'd be nice to add them to the book, for example like here or here. Also, the beginning pages for the contents would be most welcome. Anyway: thanks again for contributing! Stonecreek 06:51, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Linking uploaded images to the database record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link those image files to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the cover image file's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 18:17, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I tried it and it works. Mbh tx2000 18:35, 2 February 2015 (UTC)Mbh_tx2000

ISBNs, catalog numbers, and reliable sources for data

I had to reject the submission to add an ISBN to this record for any one of these several reasons:

  1. Don't update a primary verified record without first discussing it with the verifying editor(s). Some editors have messages at the top of their talk pages about notification preferences. If the verifier is inactive (notice at the top of their talk pages), leave a message on the Moderator Noticeboard.
  2. A 1973 book wouldn't have an ISBN-13. It wasn't created until 2005 and wasn't required until January 2007.
  3. Don't use Amazon as the source for data of a publication more than 15 years old. That information is often unreliable and from Amazon "partners" since they wouldn't actually be selling a 1973 publication. The best source for bibliographic data is WorldCat/OCLC with information entered by librarians. Here is the OCLC record for the publication you wanted to update, and you can see that it has no ISBN.
  4. Both ISBN and catalog number can't go into the same field. If an ISBN is present in the publication, it gets precedent, and the catalog number goes into the Note field. If there is no ISBN, enter the catalog number into the ISBN/Catalog # field.

The Revenge of Taurus

If the data you added to this record is from a source other than that listed in the Note field, you must give the source for the additional data as well. If you're working from a copy of the book, remove any unnecessary sources from the Note field and do a primary verification so that the moderator knows the data is from the book. Thanks. Image file limits

This file as originally uploaded was 166 kb, which exceeds our file size limit of 150 kb. (You should have received a warning when it was uploaded.) I have resized it to be within the ISFDB standards. Please keep this in mind when uploading cover image files. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:15, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

I had to do the same thing with this file. Mhhutchins 23:24, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

And this one, too (which was 200 kb). Mhhutchins 23:26, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing the file size issue to my attention. I'm currently in the process of cataloging my mom's collection of over 11,000 mostly horror and mystery books, and I find your database to be immensely helpful. However, I am rushing a lot and making mistakes adding to your database, so please forgive me. I really appreciate you being here! ~~Mbh_tx2000
That's what we're getting paid for. (Ha!) No, really, that's how most of us learned how to edit the database. The more you edit, the better you get. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 23:25, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror: 2017

Hello, I've approved your submission, but note that:

  • I've changed Amel El-Mohtar into Amal El-Mohtar.
  • all the stories will have to be merged individually. I've done this for you this time but you may wish, in the future, use the "Import Content" function with the "Option 2" that will allow you to pass only the TitleId# (the number on top right of the title page) to be imported and so save you a lot of typing and multiple merging afterwards. Hauck 07:36, 29 January 2018 (EST)
I cannot find the "Import Content" function with the "Option 2" that you speak of. More help, please?Mbh tx2000 19:21, 6 February 2018 (EST)Mbh_tx2000
No problem. Let's take an hypothetic case. Suppose you want to add this story to this book via the infamous "Import Content" method. To do this, 1) note the the TitleId# of the text to be imported, this number may be found on the to-be-imported-title page. It's the numebr on top righ, just after "Title Record #" and its vazlue is "46434 " in this case; 2) go to the publication (not the title one) page into which you want to add the text, in our case there; 3) on the publication page, click on the "Import Content" link which is on the left in the "Editing Tools" section; 4) this will open a new page divided in two parts (Option 1 & Option 2), you will then have to complete the "Individual Titles" field in the bottom part with the previously noted TitleId# ("46434"); 5) click on the "Import Titles" button (the one on bottom); 6) this will lead to another page where you'(ll see that Nightfall (your chosen text with its characteristics) is ready to be imported into H. P. Lovecraft Selects: Classic Horror Stories, you can add the page number at this stage; 7) to submit click on "Submit Data". The rest is a moderator job.
This is the way to add one item to a publication (you'll note that, in exchange for some resarch -finding the TitleId#- this will save you a lot of typing and the moderators a lot of merging), to add multiple items in one go, just enter as many TitleId# as needed and rememeber to seprate them with a comma in the "Individual Titles" field. I hope that is more clearer for you. Hauck 04:10, 7 February 2018 (EST)

How to respond.

Hello, to write on this page there are three ways depending on what you want to do:

  • to "work" on the whole page, click on "edit" on top of the page (just above "tx2000").
  • to add a new thread, click on "+" just right to "edit" on top of the page.
  • to "work" on a specific thread, use the "edot" situated on the extreme right of the title. To make indentations use one or more : and sign with ~~~~.

H. P. Lovecraft Selects: Classic Horror Stories

Hello, I've approved your submission (the result is here) and merged what I could. In order to save your time (in typing) and the moderator's (in merging), please take some time to study the "Import Content" route outlined above. BTW, can you just confirm the (low) $7.98 price? I've also changed the TYPE to OMNIBUS (as it contains one NOVEL). Thanks. Hauck 08:37, 2 February 2018 (EST)

AHA! I wasn't logged in is why I had no reply options. I could read my messages but couldn't respond. Yes, the H.P. Lovecraft collection is priced at $7.98. I was also surprised at that. And for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to follow the instructions given in the "Import Content" thread above. The # of the title was there but I couldn't see how to insert that into my new book listing. Also, many of the stories in the HP book had different original sources listed than what you have, most not in your database. Thanks for your help. I will study the import content thread again.Mbh tx2000 19:04, 6 February 2018 (EST)Mbh_tx2000
