Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Hello, Kleistke! Thank you for submitting additional information on the book. Alas, I had to delete the information on William Webb in the artists field. We really do use this field only for the name of the artist(s): the addition of (Jacket Design) would lead to the creation of a new artist named 'William Webb (Jacket Design)'. The additional information does belong to the notes, though - if you feel that he should be credited for the cover art at all. If you own the book you may primary verify it and decide on the artists.

I also changed the asterisks to another standard - assuming that you intended to have new line beginnings for every bit of information. Again, thank you for your submission! Stonecreek 09:51, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

I had to reject your submission to change the cover art field of this record. Only the cover artist is credited in this field. Cover designers are credited in the Note field. Sourcing data

When editing or creating new publication records for books in your collection, please let the moderator know this in the "Note to Moderator" field. This helps us know that you've working from the primary source. A note as simple as "Book in hand" will suffice. If you are editing or creating publication records for books based on reliable secondary sources, you must provide the source for the record's data in its "Note" field. Thanks for contributing. The Summer Tree cover

Hi, and welcome. I accepted your modifications to The Summer Tree, but there are a couple of problems with the cover image that require some changes.

  • The link to a cover image must be to an actual image (for example, a file ending in .gif, .jpg, .bmp, etc.), not to a web page (which usually end in .htm, .html, .asp, .aspx, or .php). The link you provided -- http://www.brightweavings.com/artgallery/canfthb1.htm -- is to a web page and so would not work properly. If you right-click on that image on the website and pick "Properties...", you will see the URL for the image itself is http://www.brightweavings.com/artgallery/canadafionavarhard1.jpg.
  • Because the ISFDB software loads the linked images from the remote site each time the publication record is viewed, which puts a load on the remote site's server, we only link to images on sites that have given us permission to do so. Otherwise, we require that images be uploaded to the ISFDB's Wiki and that the link be made to that instead. We do not have permission from brightweavings.com to link to images on their site, so we cannot make such links for covers. See Help:Screen:EditPub#ImageURL and ISFDB:Image_linking_permissions for more details.

So here you would need to upload the cover to the ISFDB. It is not very difficult, if you would like to give it a try. Do do it:

  1. Save the image from brightweavings.com to your computer (right-click on the image, and Save Picture As...).
  2. Go to the publication record and click on the "Upload cover scan" link that appears below the Notes.
  3. Upload the file you saved in #1 above, changing the last line of the Summary from "Source=Scanned by [[User:Kleistke]]" to something more appropriate, such as "Source=Downloaded from www.brightweavings.com".
  4. WARNING: When you save that, you will be shown a page like http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Image:NRDSTTNDRF2012.jpg. The URL you need is NOT that page's URL, but rather the link to the image shown on this page. That appears below the displayed image, immediately below the "No higher resolution available" text. Copy that shortcut or click on it and then copy the URL the browser takes you to.
  5. Go back to the tab that opened in #2, pick Edit This Pub from the menu along the left, paste the URL you copied into the Image URL field, and submit. You're all set.

Death Draws Five

There are a couple of problems with this record, which I will explain and then edit to correct. You gave the page count as "299pp" and it should just be "299". The system automatically adds the "pp" when the number is displayed. Also, you can only give one currency in the Price field. Other stated prices have to given in the Note field. So I'll remove " (C$30.95)" from the Price field and move it to the Note field. These standards and others are explained on this help page, the single most important help page for editing the ISFDB, and the one that should be bookmarked by all ISFDB editors. Thanks. Unnumbered HTML lines in records' Note field

If you wish to create bulleted lines in the record's Note field, you have to provide the HTML tag <ul> before the start of the list and </ul> at the end of the list. (I've corrected the last two submissions that failed to add those tags.)

Which function to use to add records to the database

I'm holding a submission to add the Canadian edition of Guy Gavriel Kay's novel Under Heaven. There's a couple of problems, but none too major that they can't be fixed. First, you used the wrong function to add it to the database. There is already a title record for this novel in the db. You should have gone to that title and clicked on the link "Add Publication to This Title". By using the "Add New Novel" function for this submission, you've created a second title record. I can accept the submission, but then someone will have to merge the two identical title records in order for all the publications to appear under one title. A second problem: you've added a content record for a SHORTFICTION-type work which is the same title as the NOVEL. I'm not sure what you attempting here. Is there an excerpt or some other piece of short fiction of another work on page 573? I'll accept the submission and then we can work on correcting the errors once you've read this. BTW, I've started to write a guide for beginners to help them in choosing which function to use when adding records to the database. It hasn't gone "live" yet, but with your perspective as a new editor, I'd appreciate you looking over it and giving me some pointers about improving it. Mhhutchins 06:42, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Here is the pub record for the new edition. I saw in the Note to Moderator field your concern about "finding" the ISBN-10. That should be of no concern. You should only enter what is present in the actual publication. Most publishers have completely converted to ISBN-13, so that's all they'll give. You should only enter one ISBN, so even if both are present, only enter the ISBN-13. The ISFDB software automatically generates the "other" ISBN depending upon which one you enter. All books after 2007 should have an ISBN-13. No books before 2005 should have an ISBN-13. Thanks. Mhhutchins 06:45, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

I had to reject your last submission because it made no change to the record. It would really help if you could communicate here on your talk page, and respond to the posts that moderators and other editors are leaving. You have to log-in to the Wiki (which is linked on every Wiki page), using the same user name and password that you use to log-in to the database. Once you're logged in, click on the [edit] link to the right of each topic. A dialogue box will open. Type in your response, adding a colon (":") at the start to separate it from the previous comment. End your message with four tildes (~~~~) which will automatically sign and date it. I left a note in the note to moderator field. Regarding "content record for a SHORTFICTION-type work which is the same title as the NOVEL. I'm not sure what you attempting here. Is there an excerpt or some other piece of short fiction of another work on page 573?" This does not belong there. My second revision was an attempt to remove it. Not sure what happened. Here are the steps you'll need to go through to fix the record:
  • Go to the pub record and under the Editing Tools menu click "Remove Titles From This Pub".
  • On the next screen check the box for the SHORTFICTION record. Then "Submit Data".
  • Go to the summary page for Guy Gavriel Kay. You'll see there are two records for Under Heaven. Under the Editing Tools menu click "Check for Duplicate Titles".
  • On the results screen you'll see three title records for Under Heaven. Check the box for the two NOVEL records. Click "Merge Selected Records".
  • On the next screen you'll have to resolve any conflicts between the two records. Choose the earliest date, and set the appropriate language. Click "Complete Merge"
  • Once these two submissions have been moderated you'll have to go back to the author's summary page. Click on the SHORTFICTION record for "Under Heaven".
  • Under the Editing Tools menu click "Delete This Title". Then submit.

Deuces Down

A content record of INTERIORART type is titled the same as the work it illustrates, and because of its type, it is unnecessary to disambiguate the title. So I removed "(interior illustrations)" from the title of Truman's content record in this publication. There are exceptions for special types of illustrations, such as maps and frontispieces. Comments on Mhhutchins' GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

I'm sure this is the wrong place to comment on your guide for beginners, but commenting on your talk page seemed even worse. I don't think there is any question regarding the content in terms of accuracy. My only semi-constructive comment is the language seems a bit technical, though I'm not sure it can be avoided because of the need for consistency in a database. As I use the system, I become more familiar with the appropriate terms - and that is very important. But when I started, my thought was very simple: "Here is a record which I know I can add to and ultimately verify". Looking at publication data for a book, it all seems simple. Any book collector is familiar with the fields. But what I didn't have an appreciation for was the real need to make sure data was entered in a specific way. Perhaps a note preceding the body of the guide would help.

Maybe if I had done a bit more reading of my own before jumping in I might have avoided some of the review comments I received. So maybe my evaluation is only applicable to the over-eager/impatient new editors. Thanks for all the help so far. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kleistke (talk • contribs) .

Another page I had overlooked! It does seem to be technically accurate, if already a little out-dated due to recent improved language support. I agree with "wrong place to comment" - and encourage you to comment on Michael's talk page - after all he wrote it, presumably has responsibility for maintaining it, and has copious free time to address any issues you have. ;-) BLongley 23:39, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Prices

Hi. The help does not say so explicitly, but all (modern) prices should be entered to the 1/100th, even if there is no fraction. For example, instead of £25 we use £25.00 (with a period for the decimal separator). I accepted your submission but changed the price in A Dance with Dragons back to having the decimal and zeroes. Random House number lines

Re the note you entered in this record: that's the Random House method of indicating a first edition, first printing. With the second printing they remove the "First Edition" statement and leave the number line. See the note on the publisher page. Mhhutchins 03:06, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

McCammon's I Travel by Night

Hello, I have put your change for this publication on hold, first because it is ISFDB etiquette to ask the primary verifier about changes before submitting (which I have done for you), second because it doesn't seem clear that you and the primary verifier have in fact the same edition verified. Which one do you have in hand, one of the limited? Also, what's the reason for stating in your notes that all editions bear the same ISBN? Stonecreek 03:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

I have a limited in hand. I am not certain, but believe that the only difference between the trade and limited is the colophon, slipcase and leather boards. Plus, I find it hard to believe the trade edition would have more numbered pages than the limited. Re my ISBN comment - some publishers use separate ISBNs for each edition. I thought knowing there were not separate ISBNs might make the reviewer more comfortable with my belief that there are few differences between the trade and limited (and thus the printed page count from the limited would match the trade). Well, in this case your edition should be entered as new publication (we go that deep). You can use the 'Clone This Pub.' button on the left tool bar and adapt the fields where necessary (price etc.). I'll reject your pending submission, but it is interesting if the primary verifier can hold up the page count.
Re: the ISBN. Is there a statement of ISBNs being the same for the different editions somewhere in the book (for example on the copyright page)? Stonecreek 19:56, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Editing titles in publications...

... is only possible if the title does appear in only this publication (because otherwise it would automatically affect the other publications, which may have a different notation). But please don't do it! We regularize titling to case for all words except for "and", "or", "the", "a", "an", "for", "of", "in", "on", "by", "at", "from", "with", and "to", according to the help pages on how to enter publications (if you like, you may add a note about the irregular titling).
