I added pub series data to your verified pub. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 22:20, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

I added a note about deriving the ISBN to Binary Divine. An AbeBooks seller listing reports a 1971 publication date meaning it may be worthwhile to stare at the book for a while to see if the source for this date can be spotted. We would e-mail the seller too. --Marc Kupper|talk 15:29, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I stared at the book a long time, nothing in it. Then I struggled through the 1971 issues of Locus, nothing either. The publication list of Playboy Press doesn't help, the booknumbers for 1970 are higher than those for 1971. I don't buy on AbeBooks, if you want to mail the seller, be my guest. Thanks, --Willem H. 07:33, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
The book seller replied that the 1971 date is a best guess. "The only date in the book is a copyright of 1969. However, this refers to the British hardcover. The book states that it is a reprint of a Doubleday hardcover. That book appeared in 1970 and a paperback reprint typically appears about one year later. This is consistent with some other Playboy Press science fiction of similar code numbers, 95 cent price, and "rabbit ears" logo, such as The Inner Wheel by Keith Roberts (code #16143). Playboy stopped publishing paperback science fiction soon after these books appeared and did not start again until 1976 (with a different logo and a higher price). My best guess for this book is late in 1971, but I have never been able to confirm the exact month." --Marc Kupper|talk 20:02, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Expanded the notes for Best Science Fiction Stories of Clifford D. Simak plus added Publication:BSTSCNCFCB1971. The old notes were:

  • First SFBC edition (not stated)
  • First printing has gutter code "02M" on page 219; indicates a printing in January '71
  • A February '71 selection of the SFBC
  • Jacket is credited to Ratzkin on the inside rear flap
  • OCLC 433736965 --Marc Kupper|talk 06:02, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

I added a note to The Waters of Centaurus with "An AbeBooks seller reports "First printing code L12". This needs to be confirmed." I don't know if you are familiar with gutter codes. --Marc Kupper|talk 16:42, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for this. This verification was close to my heart surgery last year. I modified the notes and publication date, and added a message to Scott Latham's talk page. --Willem H. 18:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Cool - please note that the gutter code is a "manufacturing" date and not the "publication" or "printing" date ISFDB uses. The distinction is that books are manufactured weeks to months before publication/printing though a few weeks is most common. An L12 most likely appeared on store shelves, or for book clubs was shipped to readers, in April or May 1970. Had Doubleday being stating first-printing dates the they most likely would have had "First Printing, April 1970" or May 1970.
I updated the The Waters of Centaurus publication record to make this clearer. I see on Publisher:SFBC 1970-1974#1970 that there's a 12L which was part of the May 1970 SFBC offering. I'm surprised this title is not on the SFBC page. If your copy is a book club edition then it must have been sold via a book club other than SFBC.
Much clearer like this. Thanks again. There's no sign of the book club in my copy. The price ($4.95) is printed on the inside front flap. Can't recall seeing book club editions from that period with a printed price. --Willem H. 21:04, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
As long as we are looking at dates, there's another one, the On Sale By or OSB, which is the official date a book should be placed on store shelves or shipped by sellers. Sometimes the OSB is a day near the end of the month and the book will state the following month. For example, an book with a June 25, 2010 OSB may well state "First Printing, July 2010." Publishers nearly always upload the OSB to Amazon. --Marc Kupper|talk 20:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you check The Treasure in the Heart of the Maze for gutter code P 033? This seller listing seems to be reporting a gutter code. --Marc Kupper|talk 19:59, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, the gutter code is there. I modified the notes for this one too (including the "manufacturing date" statement. Thanks, --Willem H. 21:04, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

The Passing of the Dragons Scan/upload cover. Added sub-title, added unnumbered pages before page 1, expanded notes, and changed the story lengths for the following:

  • Synth from shortstory to novelette as it's 44 pages
  • Boulter’s Canaries from novelette to shortstory as it's 18 pages.

Manscarer, Coranda, plus The White Boat could be changed from novelette to shortfiction as they are 20 pages. These three are right on the edge as ss is from 5 to 20 pages. I decided to leave them as novelette. --Marc Kupper|talk 00:24, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Good catch. Completely missed this when verifying. I added notes to the title, and changed the pubs to novels. Thanks! --Willem H. 16:45, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

I corrected the publication date for your verified publication The Fall of Worlds by Francine Mezo. The publication date listed was Oct. 1980, which is what Amazon lists. But the copyright page says "First Avon Printing, November, 1980", as Harry (presumably) already had posted in his notes. So I changed "Oct." to "Nov.". Chavey 18:01, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Nice catch. Approved! Thanks, --Willem H. 18:06, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Your verified pub, The Abyss, had a note about a mysterious, "unfound" 1967 edition of the book. Based on a suggestion by Mhhutchins, I have changed this note to read: "Pub mentions a Mercury Press 1967 edition, but this almost certainly refers to the Feb. 1968 publication in "Fantasy & Science Fiction" (published by Mercury) of "Stranger in the House", one of the two novella's making up this collection." Chavey 22:35, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

I've added a content item to your verified pub Web of Darkness for the frontispiece artwork by Victoria Poyser (signed "Victoria"). Chavey 21:02, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Logan's Run illustrator: I have put in to change the illustrator on Logan's run from Hofmann to William Hofmann, based on the signatures on the cover of Logan's Run and jacket of Earth Abides (1969). William Hofmann seems to have been a major illustrator for publishers in the 50s and 60s. His first name finally appeared on the Earth Abides dust-jacket, and I see it frequently on Alibris and Abebooks. I put this note on your talk page, then read where you wanted it--sorry.
