Hello, Riselka, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

The Hugo Winners: Volume 4

Hello. I have a question related to your submission here that would update the starting page number of the story Home Is the Hangman by Zelazny, from 1 to 5. Can you confirm that the pages following the first page of this first story are, indeed, consecutively numbered as 6,7,8,...?
Also, it is customary (and courteous) to notify any active primary verifier, in this case SFJuggler, on his/her talk page first, before any changes are submitted. This to confirm that both you and the primary verifier are in agreement of the proposed change - I have done that for you here. I will therefore keep your submission on hold for now.
The information provided in the links in the Welcome message above are a good starting point when editing the ISFDB. I'd like to encourage you to read through them. Finally, do note that you can reply to this message by simply clicking on edit at the right of this message's title (and indent by using one or more colons). Again Welcome, and I hope you like it here:-) Regards, MagicUnk 17:09, 28 April 2020 (EDT)

I apologize for overlooking any steps I should have taken. In my first edition copy, the first story appears to start on page 5. While there is no page number on this particular page, the preceding two pages (containing the 2-page introduction by Asimov) are consecutively numbered as 3 and 4. Similarly, the pages following the title page of Home Is the Hangman are consecutively numbered as 6, 7, 8,... I've also this information with SFJuggler. Thanks! Riselka 11:45, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
This is perfectly clear! Since you own a copy, consider primary verifying the publication - this indicates that you have reviewed the data, and confirms that it is accurate as per your copy. Verifying can be done from the left-hand menu when you have the publication record displayed. I have accepted your submission.
And no need to apologize. We all once have been where you are now :) We are here to help you with anything that might not be clear. Do not hesitate to ask over at the help desk, or any moderator's talk page. Again, welcome! MagicUnk 13:10, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
I've gone ahead and made a primary (transient) verification. Riselka 14:37, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
Thanks! So, you've borrowed the book perhaps? Transient meaning, you will not have it permanently. Just asking to be sure :) MagicUnk 14:41, 30 April 2020 (EDT)
Yes, it's a library book. Thanks for checking :) Riselka 15:24, 30 April 2020 (EDT)

Very often the publisher pages will show either only ISBN13 or both values regardless of when the book was published. However, for a 2003 book, ISBN13 could not have been assigned and printed on the book - the concept did not exist yet. So when correcting ISBN formats in the DB, keep that in mind please. I reverted the change here and added a note on the dates of the sources. Thanks for sorting out the date! Annie (talk) 13:28, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

Sorry, about that. I should have verified the ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 conversion before adding it to the edit. Thanks for catching this! --Riselka (talk) 15:48, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

חלקים אנושיים

Is this speculative? Neither OCLC, nor Goodreads show any subject/label as anywhere near speculative and I cannot find anything online pointing to it (but I don't read Hebrew). Thanks! Annie (talk) 13:31, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

This is the original Hebrew work that 2665327 is an English translation of. My edit should have included this as a note to moderator, apologies for the confusion. I'll make sure to do this in the future. --Riselka (talk) 15:56, 16 September 2022 (EDT)
Seems like I needed more coffee this morning - I missed the connection between the two even though both GR and OCLC have it. Approved and thanks for adding it! Annie (talk) 15:59, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

Imagination Unlimited

I have rejected this submission.

  1. The canonical (parent) can never be a variant of another title. I'm guessing you were trying to create a variant title and entered it backwards (which is still wrong, see next point)
  2. We do not invent titles. There is no publication titled 'Imagination Unlimited UK' therefore no variant title record using that name can be correct. We variant for title difference (none here), author attribution (no differences here), language (English is English in USA or UK) or title type (serials or artwork only).

Help creating variant titles. John Scifibones 14:35, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Sigh, looks like I did make a mistake in that I intended to add a variant title to this particular anthology. I was attempting to add a variant title of the same name that is notably the UK edition that only contains 6 of the original 13 stories (the other 7 are in this the variant title 34069). Can variant titles have the same exact name as their parent titles? I didn't think this was the case, thus I added the parenthetical. What alternative approach should I take?
On your second point, I just want to confirm that titles with added parentheticals (e.g., The Best of Murray Leinster (UK), The Best of A. E. van Vogt (UK)) are malformed records according to the current policy. I mistakenly extrapolated this convention for the edge case of identical titles for works with differing contents. Thanks, -Riselka (talk) 16:00, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
In my opinion yes. Both title records you reference were created in 2007, perhaps standards changed. I think you should ask the question on either the Help Desk or Community Portal. John Scifibones 16:12, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Magister Ludi

I have rejected this submission. Same as point one in the previous thread. Also, the Richard and Clara Winston translations are appropriately credited as is. The two differently titled English translations remain separate variants. John Scifibones 15:47, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Apologies if I'm not following the issue. I was attempting to create a new variant title of 509821. Specifically, a separate title record for the publications of the English translation by Richard and Clara Winston titled Magister Ludi with this specific publication 210913 in mind. Why is this invalid? Is the issue that the variant title I was attempting to create is effectively a duplicate of 2081693? If so, fair enough; I'll create the submissions to map 210913 to 2081693. If not, please let me know. I've been making some efforts to clean up some of the translation records, so I'd rather avoid making a bunch of extra work for folks caused by my bad edit submissions. Thanks, --Riselka (talk) 16:22, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
No apologies necessary. Magister Ludi: The Glass Bead Game Is correct as is. Sorry, I missed this one merged into the Mervyn Savill translation title record. I have unmerged it. Add the translator template to the new title record and variant it to Das Glasperlenspiel. Let me know when you have submitted the two edits and I'll approve them. Good catch. John Scifibones 16:40, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
Thanks, I've submitted the edits 5762948, 5762949. -Riselka (talk) 17:40, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
Approved. John Scifibones 17:48, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

The Stone Light

Cancel this submission, you know why now. Let's fix The Stone Light.

  1. Add the translator template for Elizabeth D. Crawford. (Correct for all but the one Anthea Bell translation)
  2. Unmerge the Anthea Bell translation.
  3. Add translator template to the new title record.
  4. Variant the new title to Das steinerne Licht.

Submit the edits for 1 & 2 and let me know. After I approve them, submit the edits for 3 & 4. You should be getting the hang of it now. John Scifibones 17:59, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Thanks for explaining the specific procedure! I'll make sure to follow these steps (unmerging pub and then updating subsequent title record) in the future. I cancelled the bad submission. Here are the edit submissions for the first two steps: Step 1 and Step 2. - Riselka (talk) 18:15, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
1 & 2 approved. That's what I'm here for, this is a team effort. John Scifibones 18:21, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
Here are the edits for steps 3 and 4. - Riselka (talk) 18:34, 6 September 2023 (EDT)
Approved, Now go through your list of pending submissions and cancel the ones you now know are incorrect. John Scifibones 18:48, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Six Moral Tales from Jules Laforgue

As you now know, this submission is incorrect. Go ahead and cancel it. Both titles should be separate variants (different translations & titles) of the Moralités légendaires. I broke the incorrect variant for you. Please add the appropriate translation templeates and variant each to the French original. EDIT: No need to cancel your submission, breaking the variant created a forced rejection. Thanks, John Scifibones 20:28, 6 September 2023 (EDT)

Whoops, I missed this one. Here are the submissions: 5764164, 5764165, 5764166, 5764167. - Riselka (talk) 15:50, 8 September 2023 (EDT)
