The Saliva Tree by Aldiss

I have a submission to add a fourth Sphere printing to The Saliva Tree by Aldiss. There is already a record for this printing, but it's under the title The Saliva Tree and Other Growths. Keep in mind that it is ISFDB standard to record author credit and title from a book's title page, not from its cover or spine. If this record matches your book, please cancel the submission. Thanks. Removing white space around Amazon images

I approved the submission adding this record, but you'll notice a white frame to the left and right of the image. This is easily removed: Copy the original URL http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fE6Ych%2BqL._SL500_AA300_.jpg and remove all characters between the last dot (.) and the previous one, leaving one dot before the file extension. In this case you'd enter the URL as http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fE6Ych%2BqL.jpg. Look at the difference between the two images: here and here. Pretty neat trick, don't you think. Year of The Naked Sun 9th printing

Hi. I have your submission of the 9th printing of The Naked Sun on hold. You gave it a date of 1993, but your notes talk about reprints through 1973, and the price of £0.30 does not seem consistent with 1993. Should that be '73? Complete Robot

The submission to make it into a variant was rejected because a variant of this title already exists. One of the reasons for my first question was to see if it should be merged with any other variant of this title. Please merge yours with this one. I see now that the essay in question is one of a series that appear to be section introductions. Do these introductions appear in your copy? Mhhutchins 18:26, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

If you intend to have these essays as part of the record of your printing, you should remove all contents from the record and then import them from record 156021. This will save you many submissions in having to merge the new contents records you'll create. Ask if you need help in how to remove contents and then import contents. Dating pubs

If a pub only gives the date of publication as the year, it's likely that a secondary source might have the month or even actual day of publication. If you're working on a book-in-hand that differs from the record, you should note that difference in the record's note field, and then do a primary verification of the record. The month stated in this record is probably from Locus1. I suggest updating the pub, noting that the month is not stated and that the record's date is from Locus1, then doing a verification of the record. Thanks for contributing. Page Counts

For most books, we use the last numbered page for the page count field. If significant text appears before page 1 (whether it's numbered or not) or after the last numbered page, we add those pages in brackets. So if a prologue is not numbered, and page 1 is after that prologue, the page count field is entered like this: [5]+393 (as an example). If text appears after the last numbered page it's entered like this: 393+[5]. In this book, if the prologue begins on one of the five unnumbered pages, those pages are already included in the page count, so the number shouldn't be added to the page count field. If the epilogue appears after the last numbered page and is 5 pages long, the field should be 393+[5]. Numbers given in brackets in this field indicate unnumbered pages. OK, I've been going by the rule outlined in the last paragraph of that section, which by my reading of it says to count the last page in the text in the page count if it alone is unnumbered, and it seems I mistakenly extended it to the entire epilogue in this case. This probably means that none of the page counts for the Orbit printings of this book are correct, since they either give a page count of 393 (omitting the epilogue altogether) or 405 (adding it in rather than expressing it separately). I'll work on getting those into some sort of agreement. BTW, can you confirm that your copy is trade paperback size? According to the OCLC record, it's only 18 cm. They may be wrong. Mhhutchins 01:35, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
I've just measured it and it comes out to 19.7cm. There is a 'pb' printing from 1999 in the database here, which might be the one the OCLC record is referring to. Jcameron 01:47, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Image scans

Thanks for uploading the recent set of cover image scans. I don't want this to be taken as a complaint, but some of them appear to be dark. Is there a way to adjust the settings on your scanner to brighten the image? If not, don't worry. They're still acceptable for the purposes of the database. Thanks again. Yes, some of them did come out a bit dark. It's probably my inexpert cameramanship. As you say, they're for identification purposes rather than for looking beautiful, so I didn't sweat it too much, but I'll see what I can do about getting better ones in future. Cheers. Expedition to Earth

I'm holding your submission to enter contents for this as it's far better to Import Contents from another printing, e.g. 380418. If I accepted your original submission then each of the contents would have to be merged. BLongley 15:42, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm replacing it with a cloned version of one of the existing ones; is that an acceptable workaround?
