Hello, Inspired Lamb, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

Victorian Tales of Terror

Hello and welcome! I have a few questions about your recent submission.

  • We have earlier versions of the same book credited only to Hugh Lamb. Looking at Amazon, Richard Lamb is credited for an introduction and the cover but not as an editor for the whole anthology. However, the Look inside does not have the title page and this is what we use as a base. Who is credited on the title page?
  • How large is the book? Amazon UK has 12.9 x 19.8 cm which will make a "tp" ("pb" is for US style mass market paperback only).

Thanks! Annie 18:38, 5 November 2019 (EST)

Hi, Annie. I'm Richard Lamb. I was responsible for the publishing of this edition of Victorian Tales of Terror after my father passed away earlier this year. I re-published the anthology with an extra story which was not in the original volume. The title page credits Hugh Lamb for the anthology and story introductions, and Richard Lamb for the cover, new anthology introduction, and the introduction to the extra story. It sounds like 'tp' is more appropriate. You'll have to forgive my ignorance. I'm new to making these entries.
That's absolutely ok - that is why I am asking and working with you - the DB can be a bit... interesting. My condolences for the passing of your father - ages and time do not matter, it is never a good thing. :(
Based on that, I would say to keep the credit to Hugh Lamb for the overall anthology and add your credits to the appropriate items and notes - we go by the title page but it sounds like the overall credit stayed with your father (and "About the Editor" section seems to be about him. I will also add a note to the work when I merge them that this new edition has a new story added. Down the road, if the editions change a lot more, we can split them but for now, it does sound like the old book with a new story added (which is still the old work). What do you think? If you give me author of the new story (I can see the title "The Were-Wolf" but not the author in Look Inside), I can import the old contents and get the contents sorted (or I can work with you so you can try to import).
Just to make sure I do not mix them - the Introduction is by you, the Foreword is by your father, correct? The same one from the old edition?
Welcome again and let me know how you want to proceed. Annie 17:52, 6 November 2019 (EST)
OK, so here is what we have now (found the author name in the Introduction so decided to approve and fix the few small issues and added the contents (and page numbers) from Look Inside). I also updated the note for the anthology. Let me know if you think any further changes are needed or if you have any questions/concerns or just make the changes. If you have the book, please check one more time all the titles and pages numbers. Once we have that, we should be all set. :) Annie 22:32, 6 November 2019 (EST)
And as you seem to have the sources, would you know who the translators of the two French stories are? So we can credit them properly? Thanks! Annie 22:49, 6 November 2019 (EST)

Actually, I don't know who the translators were. I have a few ideas, though. I'll see what I can find out. And, yes, the introduction is by me and the foreword by Hugh Lamb. I also wrote the About the Editor section, but don't mind that remaining uncredited. It's pretty much what I wrote for the website, anyway. It is essentially the old book with a new story added (with introduction), as well as the new intro and About the Editor. The Were-wolf author is Clemence Houseman. I'm happy for you to organise the new edition into the page as you see fit. --Inspired Lamb

I think that this is as good as we will get for now. Let me know if something looks weird. Thanks for looking for the translators! Annie 13:43, 11 November 2019 (EST)

Terror by Gaslight

I approved your submission of Terror by Gaslight, but I did make some changes. First, the cover art was not from a source that allows ISFDB to use their scans. Second, six of the authors' names were not the canonical names used on ISFDB, so I varianted them to those canonical names. Since apparently you own the publication, you can scan the cover and use that scan for the cover art. Bob 15:32, 19 January 2021 (EST)

Thank you, Bob, for all your help. --Inspired Lamb 12:03, 17 February 2021 (EST)

Anthologies

Dear Mr. Lamb, I'm an editor here at ISFDB. I stumbled across your reprints of 2 of your dad's anthologies on ISFDB, and saw that the records need extensive fixing to add/delete/correct information, so let me try to explain as succinctly as possible. I'll start with the anthology that needs the most fixing, and if all goes smoothly I'll discuss the other one later. So, Terror by Gaslight has the same cover for both the e-book and paperback on Amazon, but the ISFDB records show no cover for the paperback but credit you, Richard Lamb, as the artist, while the e-book has the cover but doesn't credit you, so I can add the cover to the paperback and credit you as the artist in the e-book. There's no price for the paperback on ISFDB, so if you can provide that for me. The e-book is entered as Terror by Gaslight on ISFDB and sits comfortably in the same title record as your dad's original anthology and its reprints, but the paperback is entered as Terror by Gaslight: Memorial Edition and sits by itself on ISFDB as if it were a brand-new anthology. Would you prefer it keep the old title or include Memorial Edition for both of your new editions on ISFDB? The e-book is credited to Hugh Lamb as editor on ISFDB while the paperback includes both your names. Would you prefer to be credited on both or neither? Your dad's foreword from the original anthology, the acknowledgements, about the editor and new afterword by Mike Ashley were all entered as fiction in the paperback on ISFDB, which none of them are, so they will be changed to non-fiction. The contents were not entered into the e-book on ISFDB so they will be imported from the paperback, and most importantly all of the fiction in your new edition was entered on ISFDB as if they are all new stories instead of giving them their proper dates of publication. I see on your talk page here that you consulted with some other ISFDB members to enter the original information so perhaps they can be of some help with all this. Info/corrections about anything I wrote here will be appreciated. --Username 21:11, 28 January 2021 (EST)

Hi, and forgive me for taking so long to respond. Let me try and answer everything for you. I'm still a beginner at entering the data for books here, so I apologise for any errors or omissions along the way.

The Kindle and Paperback editions of Terror by Gaslight: Memorial Edition should be the same, an artwork created by myself.

The paperback edition of Terror by Gaslight: Memorial Edition is $13.55 (US) and £9.99 (UK).

I would prefer to be credited, alongside my father, on both Kindle and Paperback versions, as I had editorial input, but I am aware of the inconsistencies of Amazon's listings. It's something beyond my control and as source of great frustration to me.

Thank you for amending the fiction/non-fiction entries. This is entirely down to my neglect in the form filling stage here.

If you wish I can amend the publication dates of the stories to their original dates, at least where possible, but that will take some time.

Thanks again for reaching out. I will check this page more regularly from now on.

Things That Wait in the Dark

I added my latest anthology, Things That Wait in the Dark, to the ISFDB a few days ago and it hasn't appeared yet. I just wanted to make sure that the submission had gone through. Thanks.

There was a move to another server recently and a massive amount of work done by the moderators, so there's a backlog of around 2,000 edits right now. I added a photo of your dad to his record some time ago, and I just added a link to the huge 7-page And Midnight Never Come thread on Vault of Evil from last year, because it includes the publication info for the stories that's not on ISFDB. You should consider adding your photo here, too. EDIT: Also, there are several stories in that anthology that are already on ISFDB; "Marie St. Pierre" and "Marce St. Pierre", "In the Interests of Science" as by Anonymous and also as by uncredited, and "Ego Speaks" is there twice with the author's name spelled differently. So if/when a mod responds to your message they can help you fix/merge those issues, because I'm not good with that stuff. --Username (talk) 14:09, 9 October 2022 (EDT)

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. No problem, I'm sure you have more than enough to do (I didn't know about the server change), I just wanted to confirm that the submission had gone through.

I'll take another look at the And Midnight Never Come details. Maybe I can fix the discrepancies for you. Do let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. --Inspired Lamb 10:53, 10 October 2022 (EST)

Sorry for the delay in processing this submission. We have been way behind lately. I have approved it, but had to make a couple of changes:
  • We can only use images from sites that have explicitly given us permission to do so. See ISFDB:Image linking permissions for a list of such sites. I switched it to an Amazon image.
  • I changed the format from "pb" to "tp". The ISFDB uses a specific set of values. I used "tp" (for trade paperback) based on the dimensions supplied by Amazon.
Thanks for your submission. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:34, 24 October 2022 (EDT)
