Bantam Blish Trek

I have a complete set of Blish STTOS in the form of Bantam paperbacks. They all have "ISBN-ish" markings on the spine. E.g. book one has "553 02114 125." 553 is of course Bantam's ISBN publisher code. 2114 comes from their catalog number - Q2114 appears on the front cover. 125 refers to the price of $1.25. If you convert this to an ISBN you get 0-553-02114-1. So is that the ISBN for book one? I don't know, but when I google that I get zero hits. I repeated the experiment for books 8 to 11 and got no noteworthy hits. Book 12 has an ISBN on the copyright page, and you can find it on Google Books, Wikipedia, etc. Books 1-3 would predate ISBN, at least in the early printings.

So do books 1-11 have an ISBN? Maybe. As I understand it (and I could easily be wrong) the publisher makes up the numbers within their prefix, they don't come from an authority. So ISBNs concocted from the numbers on the spine could be as legitimate as any. But it does seem the world doesn't acknowledge ISBNs for books 1-11 so there's not much point in concocting them. I wonder about #10. Was that ISBN concocted? The only google hits are on ISFDB itself which makes me suspicious.

The Robot Visions McQuarrie INTERIORART Project :)

All I wanted to do was add a missing piece of art to the contents of Robot Visions. The PV was inactive so I went to a PV of the previous printing since it was probably identical. When a holder of another edition turned up the canned worms were irrevocably unleashed. :) The result of the discussion was that I would rename the art pieces after the story in which each appears, and add some description. My proposed names/descriptions are:

  • frontispiece - Robot in open shirt, holding board over its head.  Pens in (robot's left) shirt pocket.
  • Introduction: The Robot Chronicles - Robot, arms outstretched, standing in upright hoop.  Two humans behind, at right.
  • Robot Visions - Robot in chair.  Four humans behind and one over robot's right shoulder.
  • Too Bad! - Woman in hat and glasses (left) and man (right) standing behind robot.
  • Robbie - Robot standing in field.  Boy on robot's left shoulder.
  • Reason - Man at right, working on robot on bench.  Another man and robot behind, at left.
  • Runaround - Two spacesuited men riding robots, facing forward at right, silhouetted and facing away at left.
  • Feminine Intuition - A robot head exploding.  Robot's left eye is falling out.
  • The Bicentennial Man - Variant of frontispiece. Same picture but this entry needed because a title may only appear once in a publication.
  • Lenny - Robot sitting on floor with toys, looking down and to the right.
  • Galley Slave - Robot standing at left, looking at a book. Dark-haired man standing in center. White-haired man standing at right.
  • Christmas Without Rodney - Robot standing at left, stroking its chin. Robot standing at right, touching its chest. Squatting boy and Christmas tree in background.

The goal is to be concise, unambiguous, and permit detection of left-right flips.

Satan's World

Regarding this submission: You are creating a new record that is an exact copy of the existing record. If you have the same printing, you should be verifying the existing record. If you have a different printing, you should be indicating what is different in your version. Please let me know what you are trying to achieve. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:09, 1 January 2022 (EST)

This submission seems to have the same issue. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:11, 1 January 2022 (EST)

So sorry, somehow I managed to miss the existing entries in both cases. I will cancel the submissions and try to be more careful in future. Fjh 10:39, 1 January 2022 (EST)
No problem. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:55, 1 January 2022 (EST)

The Naked Sun cover

Hi. This is a stray cover[1] Here are the other covers[2] with the correct early date 1983-11-00. What you need to do is click on the artists name and in "Edit Tools" click "Check for Duplicate Titles". Scroll till you find "The Naked Sun" Check the boxes and submit the merge. Beware of any warnings in this case there are none. This will add the cover to the other three. The merge will suggest the earlier date don't select the 1983-12-00 date of your pub. Hope this helps. After this goes through just reject the earlier submission I have on hold.Kraang 22:18, 4 January 2022 (EST)

Thanks for the instructions. submission Fjh 15:39, 5 January 2022 (EST)
I approved the earlier sub to update the image and then changed the art credit date back to 1983-12-00, so no need to reject submission.Kraang 19:39, 5 January 2022 (EST)

One printing, multiple covers

The Forge of God records 40078 and 654079 explain there are two different covers for the first printing. This seems to be the case for Quantico too: I have a first printing with this slightly different cover. Two questions:

  • Should I follow the precedent of The Forge of God and create another record for Quantico?
  • Can I update 40078 and 654079 to show the covers as described? The former says "this record is for the clear title" but currently shows the filled title, and the latter shows both covers.

Fjh 11:56, 7 January 2022 (EST)

Yes create another record for "Quantico" and update the images(Forge of God), the correct image for my PV(current one is wrong) is the left hand image(clear letters outlined in white) on the double image. Thanks.Kraang 21:28, 7 January 2022 (EST)
Thanks for the guidance. Forge clear Forge filled Quantico Fjh 01:44, 8 January 2022 (EST)
