Welcome!

Hello, Evertype, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 10:38, 27 August 2018 (EDT)

Pimeduse parem käsi

I approved the book here.

A few notes:

  • The adding of the cover is always a second step - so wait for the book to be created and then you can cleanly upload the cover and then add the URL. I copied the one you supplied into its place and will shortly delete the original upload.
  • If Tiina Reinsalu is credited as the designer only, she does not get a coverart credit but only a note. Is she also credited as the illustrator?
  • The GR cover you linked to in the notes is very different from what you uploaded. Was there a second edition? We cannot link to GR directly - you can download their covers and upload them here though.
  • While I was around, I also connected it to the English original (always an extra step post-approval).

Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. If you cannot confirm that Reinsalu also has the art credit, I will be removing the coverart record in a few days. Annie (talk) 15:22, 7 February 2024 (EST)

Hello and thank you. This is more confusing than the Wikipedia. On the copyright page it says "Kaane kujundanud Tiina Reinsalu" which means 'The cover was designed by Tiina Reinsalu'. I also uploaded a cover for the Bulgarian LHD but it does not appear. I will try again. What is a "GR cover"? Thanks again. Evertype (talk) 08:46, 8 February 2024 (EST)
OK I tried to upload a picture file but it was already at LHD-bg_1980_cover_200KB.jpg so I could not add it to the record. Evertype (talk) 08:51, 8 February 2024 (EST)
GR cover is a Goodreads cover - as you were showing a Goodread record.
ISFDB is essentially 2 separate projects together - the data for the books are in the DB while the covers and the Talk pages are in the Wiki. Once you create a book, if you look at it, it has an "Upload cover" link on it. When you click on it, it will allow you to upload in the correct place with a title that is unique for that book. Not that you cannot put the cover in a different place like you did with this one but then it won't be backed up (for example).
Once uploaded, the wiki knows who the cover belongs to but the DB does not - so you still need to edit the record to add the URL.
Would you like to try the process here (I did a few changes to get the book up to standards - we use BGN for the currency symbol and we skip the ": A novel" in titles (which is what the ": роман" means)). I can also move the image for you if you prefer. Annie (talk) 10:50, 8 February 2024 (EST)
I am sorry, I tried this process and I got "Upload warning — A file with this name exists already, please check File:LHD-bg 1980 cover 200KB.jpg if you are not sure if you want to change it. — LHD-bg 1980 cover 200KB.jpg — The upload is an exact duplicate of the current version of File:LHD-bg 1980 cover 200KB.jpg." So I do not know what to do. Evertype (talk) 09:04, 9 February 2024 (EST)
One of the buttons allows you to upload anyway -- it is just the Wiki's way from stopping people to upload the file multiple times. If you had not uploaded the file beforehand, it would not have matched. Do you want me to upload it for you and connect it? Annie (talk) 10:24, 9 February 2024 (EST)
In my opinion it is a TERRIBLE idea to convert older currencies into the modern one. How could one use a currency converter with the wrong currency? Codes for former currencies exist for a reason. A Soviet ruble is not the same as a Russian ruble. Not at all. Evertype (talk) 09:04, 9 February 2024 (EST)
We don't use codes but a mix of symbols and codes (and I mixed up things here - we use Lev for Bulgarian - my brain mixed up another DB I am working on here). The list we support is here. If you use anything else, it will ping on a report and someone will need to fix it later. If you think that we should use different symbols for the 6 different eras of the Levs, please open a discussion on the Rules and Standard page and we can discuss it. But keeping different symbols makes it harder for users to add books so we tend to simplify things with currencies and the publication year tells people what era it is if they care about it. The price is there just for completeness - we are not a price DB after all. Annie (talk) 10:24, 9 February 2024 (EST)

The Bulgarian Le Guin

We already have the work here - so I rejected the attempt to add it again. Let me know if you need any assistance (in case you had not looked at my page, Bulgarian happens to be my native language - and I also work across all the Eastern and Central European languages on the site). :) Annie (talk) 11:32, 8 February 2024 (EST)

Yes, I am the one who uploaded that record. I ALSO uploaded a book cover and I cannot link it to this and cannot upload another image. So what do we do? Evertype (talk) 08:14, 9 February 2024 (EST)
