Recent Cyteen changes

Hi. You just made changes to Cyteen with this submission. While I don't disagree with the changes, you really should have contacted both GlennMcG and me who are active PVs for that publication first. We both respond quickly. You also should have changed the page count to [7]+680 with the first map on [6] and the second map on [7]. Regards, Phil (talk) 07:50, 19 November 2023 (EST)

Would you object if I make the following changes to the hardcover edition of Cyteen? Change the page count to [7]+680 with the first map on [6] and the second map on [7]. (Also sent to other PV) Thanks! Phil (talk) 15:04, 13 December 2023 (EST)
Decidedly yes object to doing that - does not at all match my physical copy. First numbered page is 1 (Verbal Text from: THE HUMANE REVOLUTION....).The maps are on the preceeding UNNUMBERED pages before this and there are decidedly not seven unnumbered pages prior to page 1 either. --Mavmaramis (talk) 15:43, 13 December 2023 (EST)
Looking at the Help text for the Pages field, it says "Sometimes a publication will have unnumbered pages before page 1. If there is any material in these pages which needs to be entered as part of the contents of the book, you may record this by entering the count in squared brackets. For example, [6]+320 would be a publication with six unnumbered pages and then 320 numbered pages. There is no need to record these unnumbered pages if they contain no content that needs to be recorded.". We both agree that there are unnumbered pages before page 1 and there are two maps on those unnumbered pages. My understanding is that you count the unnumbered pages starting with the first page with printing on it from the front of the book and count until you reach the last unnumbered page with printing on it. Starting with the page that has only "Cyteen" printed on it and stopping on the last map page, there are a total of 7 unnumbered pages. Per the Help, that number is entered in brackets, hence [7], making the correct page count value [7]+680. The two maps are on unnumbered pages 6 and 7, so they are entered as pages [6] and [7] respectively in the page number field of their Regular title entries. Does this make sense to you? Regards, Phil (talk) 08:00, 14 December 2023 (EST)
You are overcomplicating what is an already straightforward entry. Normally one does not count things like title page, copyright page etc as part of the page numbering. Do whay you will I have nothing furthwer to say. --Mavmaramis (talk) 11:54, 14 December 2023 (EST)
Based on your response, I thought it would be prudent to check on this with a moderator. Based on this discussion, I determined that my counting procedure was correct. Since the other PV agrees with my revised changes, I have updated the record accordingly. Regards. Phil (talk) 08:32, 16 December 2023 (EST)

Fontana's A Cure For Cancer

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?220125; I added Archive.org link in a PENDING edit and fixed publisher to Fontana / Collins since that's what it says in the book on the title page. --Username (talk) 19:49, 21 November 2023 (EST)

Childhood's End

Can you please take a look at Childhood's End? The catalog number is given as G643, but the cover shows G463. Is this a database typo or does the book have the transposed digits inside? Can you either correct the record or add a publication note regarding the disconnect? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:27, 2 December 2023 (EST)

It was a databse typo. Check physical copy and it is G463 which is only printed on the cover and nowhere else. I've submitted a correction. --Mavmaramis (talk) 08:32, 2 December 2023 (EST)
Approved. Thanks! -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:06, 2 December 2023 (EST)

Golden Apples of the Sun 1978 UK HC

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?520003; I added Archive.org link and entered page numbers for the stories in a PENDING edit but there are 2 stories not in the book; "Great Fire" and "Big Black and White Game". I'm going to remove them and also import Mugnaini's interior art. Re: publisher I think it should probably be changed to this, https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pubs_not_in_series.cgi?17853, as similarly dated and priced Bradbury books are there, but that's up to you. --Username (talk) 12:48, 8 December 2023 (EST)

Can confirm the two stories you mentioned are not in this publication. As far as publisher goes maybe wise to include Granada as the publiher (so something like Hart-Davis, MacGibbon / Granada) as Granada Publishing is prominent on title page and copyright page. Otherwise someone might assume that Granada had no part in it's publication. You could always raise this on the Moderator Noticeboard on the Commiunity Portal given that merely becasue other Bradbury publications of this date were merely entered as Hart-Davis, MacGibbon does not indicate Granada were not involved. --Mavmaramis (talk) 13:20, 8 December 2023 (EST)

Suaine and the Crow-God

I added the Internet Archive scan to Suaine and the Crow-God. In doing so, I noticed the page count was wrong (the prior count was less than the last listed contents) and two typos. I made the corrections based on the scan. If by some odd chance, the scan differs from your copy, please let me know and I will revert and clone a new record. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:25, 10 December 2023 (EST)

Page count should be 255, checked with my physical copy. --Mavmaramis (talk) 11:58, 10 December 2023 (EST)
Thanks for confirming. My prior edit seems to have gone missing. I must not have hit submit. I re-did it so you will now also see the typo corrections. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:32, 10 December 2023 (EST)
I noticed edit was missing so I did one; it was rejected because J's edit fixed the same stuff. However, there may be a few other issues. I think "day on end" should be days; also, why are some art titles capitalized and others not? --Username (talk) 13:13, 10 December 2023 (EST)

The Lost Continent of Mu

Would you please check the page 70 artwork title of The Lost Continent of Mu? Is the missing space in "TheDistribution..." a database typo? If not, please add a note stating it is original to the pub. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:28, 10 December 2023 (EST)

It's a typo. Should be "The Distribution" (with a space). --Mavmaramis (talk) 11:50, 10 December 2023 (EST)
Fixed. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:35, 10 December 2023 (EST)

Tegne

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?34650; I added Archive.org link and other stuff to the PB in a PENDING edit; first word in the title has an accent over the e so I fixed that. If your PV TP does, too, then you can fix that and I'll add it to cover art (parent and variant) and title record. EDIT: I just noticed something; since it's a series then Tegne shouldn't be in the PB or TP titles because that's the rules here, dropping series names from titles. The series title does have the accent over the e so if you agree to remove Tegne then I'll re-do my edit doing the same and then I'll just have to add the accent to the cover art(s). --Username (talk) 23:05, 12 December 2023 (EST)

Warlord of Zendow does indeed have an accent over the e of Tegne. --Mavmaramis (talk) 23:58, 12 December 2023 (EST)

Half A Life Title

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?269198; While just making an edit adding archived link I noted subtitle "and Other Stories" is also in this edition so can you add that to the title if it's also in your copy? --Username (talk) 10:38, 20 December 2023 (EST)

Done. --Mavmaramis (talk) 11:54, 20 December 2023 (EST)

Space Traveller

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?70359; While adding Archive.org link I also noted NZ $18.95 price, no number on last page, and misspelled word on title page (Reminiscenes); not sure if that error requires a variant but that's up to you. I also added link for Star Diaries (Mandarin edition); nothing else was required for that. Both are PENDING and should be approved sometime in the New Year. --Username (talk) 23:12, 29 December 2023 (EST)

That's fine. All details you mentioned confirmed from my own copy. --Mavmaramis (talk) 01:50, 30 December 2023 (EST)

Digital Fantasy Painting

Happy New Year! Would you mind if I added some images to this record? https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?514360Rosab618 (talk) 15:06, 30 December 2023 (EST)

Not at all and a happy new year to you too. --Mavmaramis (talk) 16:27, 30 December 2023 (EST)

Harry Harrison / West of Eden

I am editing an PVing West of Eden and will add month: 1985-07-00 and state source: Galactic Central Bibliography Teallach (talk) 13:23, 3 January 2024 (EST)

Carry on but since those are minor edits you don't really need to inform me. --Mavmaramis (talk) 14:32, 3 January 2024 (EST)

The Martian Chronicles

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?353769

hiya mate Ive got this book and i'm asking the pvs about a couple of issues. the first one is just that 2 of the contents are out of order ie "The old ones" and "the martian" theyre on the same page but old ones should come first. The second one relates to the fact that the stories are all prefixed by a date in the contents and before the story itself. In this book there is no colon or hyphen and all the contents entries leave out the date except the last one which uses the variant with the date. for consistency i'd like to swap it out for the variant without the date. cheers from Gaz

Proceed. --Mavmaramis (talk) 10:38, 21 January 2024 (EST)

Robert (A.) Heinlein / The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress

I am editing and PVing The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. In my copy, the author's name is stated as "Robert Heinlein" on the title page even though it's "Robert A. Heinlein" on cover and spine. So I propose to change the author's name and add a corresponding pub note. Is your copy the same? Teallach (talk) 18:34, 21 January 2024 (EST)

Mine is the same. Proceed. --Mavmaramis (talk) 00:21, 22 January 2024 (EST)

Sphere Cities of Wonder

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5872641; If your copy has readable prices on the back you can erase my note after approval and enter them all; also, pre-decimal price, if there is one, should be added to price field because it's a 1970 book before the switch to decimal prices. --Username (talk) 12:10, 26 January 2024 (EST)

Right prices on back cover are thus: Australia 1.00c; New Zealand 85c; UK 6/- (30p); South Africa 75c; East Africa 7/25. Hope that helps. --Mavmaramis (talk) 15:02, 26 January 2024 (EST)
OK, thanks, I cancelled old edit and made new edit; https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5872984. --Username (talk) 16:57, 26 January 2024 (EST)

Star Maker

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?269259

hello there i'm asking the active pvs to have a quick shufti at this one re the pages field. In my copy the last numbered page is 264 which is the lsat page of the note on magnitude essay. After that theres the 3 pages of time scale diagrams followed by a load of magnum adverts so i'm thinking it should be 264+[3]? That time scale diagram sequence has been entered as contents for the 2003 sf masterworks edition so it could be imported here as well if you think its worth it. cheers from Gaz Faustus (talk) 19:57, 7 February 2024 (EST)

Mine is the same. You could add a note about the additional pages after the diagrams having adverts. --Mavmaramis (talk) 23:55, 7 February 2024 (EST)

The Year's Best SF 1972

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?286137

hiya mate, just to let you know that i'm going to import the 4 cartoons on p87-90 that are already entered in the other editions of this title. cheers from Gaz Faustus (talk) 17:47, 15 February 2024 (EST)

Ive just noticed the map on p45 in the first sphere edition so that's gone for import as well, Gaz Faustus (talk) 18:00, 15 February 2024 (EST)

Ultima Thule

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?367484; Fixed story's # to 69. --Username (talk) 12:40, 26 February 2024 (EST)

Robert A. Heinlein

Please see this edit I am holding that impacts your verified pub. The Internet Archive link being added shows a pub with "Paul Harris Publishing" on the title page, but "Taplinger Publishing Company" on the dust jacket. Does that match your version? There are other Internet Archive versions ([1], [2]) which have the same cover, but have Taplinger also on the title page. What does your jacket say? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:07, 2 March 2024 (EST)

My copy is entirely Paul Harris Publishing. Logo on dustwrapper spine and Paul Harris Publishing on title page. So not a Taplinger edition. Hope that helps. --Mavmaramis (talk) 16:17, 2 March 2024 (EST)
Edit has been rejected. I'm not sure if there was some weird edition that had a Paul Harris tile page with a Taplinger dust jacket or if someone just inadvertently swapped covers on the two editions. Thanks for checking. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:47, 7 March 2024 (EST)
My guess would be that the submitter has an edition that had a Taplinger dustwrapper put onto a Paul Harris edition. I see a lot of books sold via ABE without dustwrappers and then there are lists for dustwrappers only. --Mavmaramis (talk) 15:52, 7 March 2024 (EST)

Gilgamesh the King

I'm holding this submission which impacts your verified pub. Does your edition have the separate afterword? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:22, 9 March 2024 (EST)

Yes indeed it does. Starts on p.298. --Mavmaramis (talk) 15:01, 9 March 2024 (EST)
I approved the edit. You may wish to add the page number for the novel start. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:39, 9 March 2024 (EST)

Horror: 100 Best Books

Hi. There may be an error in the contents of the publication you've PV'd. Could you check & chime in here with what you've got in your copy? Thanks! MagicUnk (talk) 14:25, 25 March 2024 (EDT)

The Science Fiction Source Book

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?513492

hiya mate, could you have a look at this one, ive just done a pv for it and the contents info doesnt tally with my book. "A Brief History" by Aldiss on p10 is missing. "SF Criticism" is on p294. "Criticism Checklist" is on p297. If yours is the same then i'll make the changes. cheers - Gaz Faustus (talk) 08:13, 2 April 2024 (EDT)

The Aldiss item is indeed on p.10 and the other two items are the same as my copy. Procede with your changes. --Mavmaramis (talk) 12:01, 2 April 2024 (EDT)

Shores of Death

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?147341; I added Archive.org link in a PENDING edit. A couple of prices on back are covered by a sticker so if you'd like you can enter prices from your copy in notes; also, since it's a 1970 UK book, per ISFDB pre-decimal rules, the price should be 5/- and not £0.25. --Username (talk) 15:36, 3 April 2024 (EDT)

Burroughs / (A) Princess of Mars

I am editing and PVing A Princess of Mars and propose to:
1) Change title to "Princess of Mars" as per title page and do the varianting
2) Create coverart record "Princess of Mars" by Bruce Pennington (already credited in notes) and variant it to the existing coverart record "A Princess of Mars" by Bruce Pennington
3) Change the note "Nine digit ISBN" to "ISBN derived from 9 digit SBN". The current note gives the impression that the book is stating an invalid ISBN
4) Add a note that the Foreword on page 5 is "in universe" fiction and forms part of the novel (and thus should not appear in the Contents).
5) Add other minor pub notes; some minor corrections of typos
Is all this ok with you? Teallach (talk) 18:43, 9 April 2024 (EDT)

No problems. Procede. --Mavmaramis (talk) 00:04, 10 April 2024 (EDT)

Best SF of the Year 15

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?209497

hiya mate youre the only other permanent pv for this one so i'm checking to see if you mind if i change a couple of the contents to different variants that are already on the db.. The "Bluff" story is down as by eric g. iverson but in the book its by Turtledove under his own name. the Benford storyis down as "Space-Time" when it should be "Space/Time". cheers from Gaz Faustus (talk) 22:47, 10 April 2024 (EDT)

Matches my copy. Please procede. --Mavmaramis (talk) 01:25, 11 April 2024 (EDT)
