Welcome!

Hello, Leporidae, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! John Scifibones 14:39, 8 February 2023 (EST)

Folding Beijing

I approved your addition of a synopsis for the novelette Folding Beijing. Did you write it? If not, we need to identify the source per our standards outlined here. Thanks, John Scifibones 14:43, 8 February 2023 (EST)

I wrote the synopsis for "Folding Beijing" per the directions on the New Publications page. I have not copied the synopses I submitted from any other source. (On a side note, am I meant to respond to queries about my edit on this page under the same header, or to create a new section on your talk page?) I guessed you wrote it, hence my approval before asking. I was just confirming. Thanks for the quick response. You were correct to post here. We strive never to split up a thread, makes it difficult(impossible) to follow. John Scifibones 16:01, 8 February 2023 (EST)

Contacting Aliens: An Illustrated Guide to David Brin's Uplift Universe

Before even submitting an edit of this type, it is necessary to contact the active primary verifiers and gain concurrence. I won't put it on hold as one of the verifiers is a moderator. John Scifibones 17:11, 11 February 2023 (EST)

I will contact the two users listed as primary verifiers for the title. Thank you for the pointer on editing a verified publication. Leporidae (talk) 11:44, 13 February 2023 (EST)Leporidae
I was working through some of the older entries in the moderator queue and saw your two. One thing to add here is that collections of essays are added as NONFICTION in the DB -- and fictional essays can be added as either SHORTFICTION or as ESSAY. You can add essays inside of nonfiction books if this is what you want to do. I personally think that in-universe essays should be added as essays :) But it is up to the editor. Based on that, do you still think that we should treat that as fiction or should we keep it as non-fiction. Annie (talk) 12:23, 29 March 2023 (EDT)
Thanks for reaching out. I'm still awaiting a response from the PV of the 2010 e-book edition. I think the entries in "Contacting Aliens" should be classified as works of fiction, since the work is written in its entirety as an in-universe document. To me, an "essay" is a work that comments on or engages a text while remaining separate from it, acknowledging the source material as a discrete work that is unaffected by the contents of the essay. "Contacting Aliens" expands on the original text (the "Uplift Universe") as a natural extension of it. It doesn't acknowledge the "Uplift Universe" as a discrete work (outside of the blurb on the back) because the entries contained within are a canonical part of the "Uplift Universe." I will leave it as it is for now - fictional non-fiction (aka non-fiction inside of a universe) can be recorded either way. We can always revisit if you and the PVs decide to do something else. Annie (talk) 18:27, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Foreward: To the 1945 Edition of Number Seven Queer Street

Hello again,

About this one: Is it credited to Margery Lawrence on the title page of the story? If not, then we need to handle that a bit differently (basically treat Jerome Latimer as a pseudonym and variant into Margery Lawrence as oppoed to having both names on the single entry). You may also want to ping the PV for the type change. Annie (talk) 12:26, 29 March 2023 (EDT)

I will say that I only have access to the 1946 re-print (which I'll need to submit an edit request to have the 1945 Foreward added to), but to my understanding the text for the Foreward was not edited between editions. None of the stories in the book (among which I count the Foreward) have an individual title page. (Both 1945 and 1946 editions were subject to British wartime printing restrictions that largely forbid "wasted space" in print books like empty title pages for individual stories.) While the "Foreward" ends with "-Jerome Latimer" like a signed letter, that should be read as part of the text of the story and not a direct attribution since Jerome Latimer is a fictional character. Margery Lawrence is the sole credited author of the book, so it would make sense to treat "Jerome Latimer" as a pseudonym. Leporidae (talk) 13:25, 4 April 2023 (EDT)Leporidae
I will then cancel your current updates and make it a pseudonym. Sorry for the delay - apparently I missed the updates. Annie (talk) 18:25, 23 May 2023 (EDT)
