Welcome!

Hello, Canuckscribe, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:36, 7 February 2022 (EST)

James K. Moran

Thank you for the information. I believe I have sorted out James K. Moran. If I missed any credits, let us know. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:36, 7 February 2022 (EST)

Fit for Consumption

I accepted the addition of Fit for Consumption, but had to make the following changes:

  • ISBN: The ISBN field should only be a single number. If the book was issues with an ISBN13, then that forms should be used or otherwise the ISBN10. The software will automatically translate into the other version.
  • Cover Artist: This is only for the artist. We do not credit the designer in this field. The designer can be noted in the pub notes.
  • Image: We can only accept image links from sites that have given us permission. I changed this to an Amazon image. You can also upload a local image if you wish (see instructions in the welcome message at the top of the page).
  • Price: Please add ".00" for whole dollar amounts.
  • Afterword: Nonfiction is only used for a whole publication that is all nonfiction. For an essay within another work, we use "ESSAY" as the type. For common titles like "Foreword", "Preface", and "Afterword", we also add the publication title in parenthesis.

Regarding your request for feedback, you did very well for a first attempt. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning, but everything should be in the help links in the welcome message above. We hope you will continue to contribute. And please let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking).

I did have one question on this pub: You entered it with a date that is down to the day. Is that date on the pub itself? Or is it from a secondary source (Amazon, publisher's website, etc)? If the later, you should have a publication date stating the source (example: "Only data is year. Publication date from publisher's website as of 2022-02-13"). -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:01, 13 February 2022 (EST)

Thanks for Fit for Consumption feedback, edits

Thank you for the very useful feedback about doing my first entry, Fit for Consumption. I will scrutinize the FAQ's more closely and apply what you corrected to my next book entry. I entered a specific date for publication that I copied from amazon.ca. I will only enter the year next time. Does that work? The ISBN numbers (ISBN-10 and ISBN-13) listed on amazon.com confused me, hence my listing of both. I will only list the ISBN-10 going forward. Also, is this the correct way to respond to your question, hitting the "plus" sign on my talk page and starting a new subject/headline preview? Cheers. Canuckscribe 14:53, 14 February 2022 (EST)

You can use a secondary source's more specific publication date as long as you add a publication note. I updated Fit for Consumption which you can see for an example. For the ISBN, please use the ISBN13 if it is present on the publication (generally books after 2007). Only use the ISBN10 if it does not have an ISBN13. As for responding, instead of creating a new section, you can use the "edit" link to the right of the section title and then add the response below the prior post. If you add colons before your response, it will indent it (one colon indents once, two colons twice, etc.). Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:07, 16 February 2022 (EST)
Terrific! I will make a note of all the above, going forward, and keep learning. Thanks! Canuckscribe 20:48, 16 February 2022 (EST)

His Mouth Will Taste of Chernobyl

Hello,

When a story is inside more than one publication, you cannot edit its length from inside a publication (as you discovered). Instead, open the publication and click on the story itself. In this case it opens this record. You can edit from there. I had done that for this story but this is so you know how to do it in the future. Let me know if you have any questions. Acres of Perhaps

Regarding your question in the moderator's note of this submission: You can go to the publication record and click the "Edit" in the top right (next to the Publication Record #). You can then edit the pub notes field and submit the change. Hope that helps. If you have questions on how something works, it's best to post at ISFDB:Help desk instead of creating an empty edit record. That will get a faster response also. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:49, 24 February 2022 (EST)

Thank you! Went in and edited the Publication Record, as you instructed. I will also use the Help desk next time for my question. Canuckscribe 16:30, 24 February 2022 (EST)

Blood on His Hands

Approved that one and fixed the few obvious things - you can now finish the rest. Details here. :) Annie 16:46, 16 March 2022 (EDT)

Thank you for the fixes and the explanation, Annie! Much obliged. Still learning the ropes. ;) Canuckscribe 17:06, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
No worries. Next time, try the browser back button. IF it does not lose the contents (it might - it depend on how many you added and your browser and so on), you can cancel the incomplete one (go to your Pending and cancel from there) and finish your work and submit. Do not leave two completing edits on the board at any time :). If it loses the stories, do exactly what you did today but post on the Moderator board: Helpdesk is if you need help, that one is if you need a moderator to assist with a submission :) Also - when posting a new question, don't edit he board page, use the plus sign next to the edit link :) That will allow you to add a title (how I did for yours there) and makes it easier for someone to see what the need is :) Let me know if you have any questions/concerns :) Annie 17:14, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
Oh, wow. Thank you for the upgrade. I understand how I was using the Help Desk instead of the Moderator noticeboard now. I have read over all your tips a few times and learned a few things. :) Canuckscribe 17:24, 16 March 2022 (EDT)

Blood on His Hands last queries about uncredited interior artwork, contributors section (promise)

I have completed the ToC on an anthology, Blood on His Hands to my satisfaction, save for three details that I still need to confirm. There is uncredited interior artwork. I am trying to confirm the artist's name with the publisher. The first instance of interior art is the first page of the book (unnumbered and not the cover). I have left the page number blank since the page numbering does not begin until the first page of the first short story in the antho. Should I have left the page number blank? Secondly, I suspect that the art there and on page 130 is done by the same artist as it is the same style. However, I cannot assume this, so I have entered "uncredited" in the author fields blank for now, as indicated by the guidelines. Also, I am unclear whether the About the Authors section, which lists contributor bios on page 151, should be entered. I have not added this section as I am unclear whether it is necessary for the record and how to include it. Do I need to enter this section? Many thanks! Canuckscribe 17:54, 16 March 2022 (EDT)

If interior art is not credited inside of a publication, you add it as by "uncredited". If we ever learn who the artist is, we variant up. Note that this is different from the cover arts - as we cannot have uncredited there, we only create a record when we know who made it.
Look at the help page for the pages field. If there is anything before the first page that will need indexing (as it is here) and there are for example 12 pages before what is either numbered (or would be if there was a number) page 1, you can use [xii]+193 or [12]+193. I prefer the latter unless the pages are actually numbered with Roman numerals. Then for the INTERIORART, use [1]|0.01 or [i]|0.01 (depending on what schema you used in Pages) if it is on the 1st of these 12 page (the |0.01 is needed so it gets sorted before the actual page 1). Adjust your numbers as needed and keep in mind that if the book numbering starts with 5, you need to count back to 1 first before you count how many extras are there.
About the Author is added only if it is substantial - otherwise you just add a note about it. See how I added notes here for example about one of those. If it is all on one page and it is for more than 2 authors, it cannot be substantial... :) So notes it is.
Let me know if something does not make sense. Annie 18:16, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
PS: You could have also responded above - no need for a new topic if we are already working on the book. But either way works :) Annie 18:33, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
IN other news: small correction was required - if the author has two initials, we always add a space between them. So L. A. Fields and not L.A. Fields :)
Question: is that art on page 130 belonging to one of the stories? If so, it will be named as the story, not as the book. And do you have the book? if you do, do you plan to verify it? As it is a second art with the same name and author, its name is now " Blood on His Hands [2]" :) Annie 18:36, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
One more thing - we have an Import functionality once you add the book. So previously published stories can be imported so we do not need to merge them after that. I've done all the needed merges. For any story that did not get merged and where you added a date different than the name of this anthology, you need to add a note on the "first publication". Please note that if it was published under a different title and/or author form, the date of this one will be the date of the anthology and NOT of the original. Annie 18:41, 16 March 2022 (EDT)
Thank you so much, Annie. Apologies for the delayed reply. I started a new job (with the library, in fact).
The interior art appears on the unnumbered page one. There are six unnumbered pages before the numbered page one. Do I need to add [6]+160?
In my edits, I also corrected the page count. I had incorrectly inputted 193. The actual page number, as it appears on amazon.com, is 160.
As well, I made a note about the "Donors" (name given to the author bios section) on pages 151 to 153.
So far, all of what you are saying makes sense, even if I have to re-read it a few times to adjust my frequency to database entry. ;)
Thank for correcting L. A. Fields. I was going by the exact spelling (and spacing) of the name as it appears in the ToC and "Donors" section of my hard copy of the antho.
In answer to your query about the interior art on page 130. Yes; it belongs to the story. The story is "Let the Night Inside". Does that change the database entry from "Blood on His Hands [2]" to "Let the Night Inside [2]"?
In regards to merged stories. Yes; all of the stories you have not merged (Ta for that, btw!) are appearing in this antho for the first time. Do I just leave the story entries as they are and no need to add "first publication"? They all have the same publication date as this antho.
