Welcome!

Hello, Bob Finegold, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Ahasuerus 10:25, 6 July 2021 (EDT)

Multiple forms of author names

Grantville Gazette, September 2021

Hello,

I approved the addition of the magazine (thanks for adding it) but had to do a few changes:

  • We date magazines based on their cover dates. Exact dates from publishers and so on go into the notes.
  • When adding names, please add just a name and not their role as well
  • A few capitalization changes to bring the titles to our policy.
  • We cannot link to the Baen site for the cover. You can upload the cover to our DB if you want though (see the links in the very first message on how to).

The result is here. Let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns. Annie 16:42, 23 September 2021 (EDT)

Fantastic Detectives

I have accepted your addition of Fantastic Detectives, but had to make some changes:

  • I removed "(editor)" from editor names. The name field should just be the name & not a role. While the software lists the field as Author when editing, once accepted, an anthology will show Editor as the label. The only times we add parenthesis is when we need to distinguish two authors with the same name.
  • I changed the format from "pb" to "tp". The ISFDB uses a specific set of values. I used "tp" (for trade paperback) based on the dimensions supplied by Amazon.
  • When using an Amazon image link, the underscores and everything between them should be removed.
  • We add the publication name in parenthesis for an essay that has a generic name link Introduction, Foreword, or Preface. This is distinguish them on the author's page listing when they have multiple.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 07:45, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Do you happen to know something about the author Jeff Patterson who also contributed to this anthology? The two titles we have listed may have been authored by different persons (they are more than 40 years apart). Christian Stonecreek (talk) 14:16, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

Thank you both. :) 1. BOOK COVER IMAGE: The Amazon URL I entered (and you kindly reformatted for me, JLaTondre, so it would load) was, unfortunately, incorrect.

  • The correct Amazon cover image URL is: 41Nu6P1nb0L._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
  • Per your instructions to remove "the underscores and everything between them," therefore: 41Nu6P1nb0L.jpg

This brings up the correct cover image and awaits moderator (your) approval.

2. JEFF PATTERSON: I do not know Jeff. I do see he has an Amazon author's page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Jeff-Patterson/author/B00DPYZ5AS?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true, but I see none of the works in which his work has been published in the ISDFB. He is not the Jeff Patterson with ISFDB Author Record # 238797.

Thanks for your research! I have differetiated the two authors (leaving the author represented in "Fantastic Detectives" untouched: it seems there are more titles by him that also belong to ISFDB).
Please do sign your posts at this Wiki with four tildes, '~', this way they are automatically signed and dated. Christian Stonecreek (talk) 02:12, 24 May 2023 (EDT)

Dear Christian/Stonecreek, Thank you. I have again tried and failed to update the cover art for this entry. I even tried following the prompts initiated by selecting "Change Cover" on the entry's page [File:FNTSTCDTCT2023.jpg]. However, when this also did not result in the desired change in cover art, I substituted the new URL of the uploaded <200Kb JPEG I provided: https://isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/File:FNTSTCDTCT2023.jpg This also did not elicit the needed change. Can you help me, please? Bob Finegold (talk) 14:48, 25 May 2023 (EDT)

Click on the image or on the link "Original file" under it to grab the URL - the URL you need is https://isfdb.org/wiki/images/1/1f/FNTSTCDTCT2023.jpg. Keep in mind that there may be some browser caching so if it shows as the old image, you need to reload your browser (Ctrl+F5 on windows). One note - the image works but it is a bit too big (sizewise 500 × 740 has one side over 600). That means that in some places, it may not render correctly - but it will work when you add it to the book (and the edit is approved) Annie (talk) 15:19, 25 May 2023 (EDT)
