Hi, Kraang. I have a (slightly ridiculous) question about David Boring. Back in 2009, you added the note about it being reviewed in an SF publication. Do you know which? Add the publication in as a Chapbook and in the Regular Title section add (Part 1 of 4) or (Vol 1) after title, then make title type a serial. Are the other three parts going to be published? the publisher's page says it would be published in two volumes, the cover artist's Facebook page says in four parts, however, only the first volume was published, nothing was said if there will be continuation. I think the illustrator is right, as the original book has 572 pages and this one has 176. In the original book, it seems to already be divided into 4 parts. Hyju (talk) 12:21, 30 January 2023 (EST)

Looking at the original (2017) Spanish text, I see the following note:

• Robert E. Howard's [novelette] "La Reina de la Costa Negra", which is included in its entirety in this novel, was originally published in Weird Tales in May 1934 as "The Queen of the Black Coast." The Spanish translation is the work of Rodolfo Martínez [...]

This explains why the title page and the cover credit both Howard and Martínez. I suggest that we add Howard's name to the Spanish title as well as to the proposed Portuguese title.

I can also confirm that the Spanish original consists of 4 "cuarta"s ("quarters"), so it seems likely that a 176-page book would contain the first "quarter" as opposed to the first half of the original, which is 572 pages long. Furthermore, the Spanish original is 168K words long. The four "quarters" are novella length since they are under the 40K limit:

• First "quarter" -- 19%
• Second "quarter" -- 23%
• Third "quarter" -- 23%
• Fourth "quarter" -- 21%
• Appendices, including Martínez's translation of Howard's fictionalized essay "The Hyborian Age" -- 12%

This means that Kraang's guess above is correct and they are, in ISFDB terms, SERIALs as opposed to "split novels". Ahasuerus (talk) 13:33, 30 January 2023 (EST)

Theodora Goss / The Thorn and the Blossom - Deletion Problem

You have processed all my submissions for this title to date but I'm now stuck on a step. As you know, I'm converting this from a Chapbook with a Novella to a Collection with two Novelettes. I now want to delete the Novella record as it has no associated pubs but I can't. When I try to "Delete This Title", I get the message "Error: 1 awards still refer to this title". There is no option to remove the Award or the Reviews so how do I go about deleting the Novella? Incidentally, I have taken a note of the Award and 5 Reviews and will import them to the container title for the Collection once it has been created. Thanks in advance for your help. All looks good now, thanks. One last piece of tidying up: deletion of the old, incorrectly titled Interiorart record. I have submitted an edit to do this. I see where you're coming from regarding an explanation of the Locus award as "Best Novelette" but I have no idea why Locus considered it to be a Novelette. The approx word counts are: Brendan's Story - 10,500 and Evelyn's Story - 10,900. So even if you consider the whole work to be a single piece of fiction (which it isn't), the total word count is 21,400 hence Novella. Teallach (talk) 17:46, 12 February 2023 (EST)

Incorrect info added to database

Hello Kraang, I am one of the editors of the Brazilian magazine Histórias Extraordinárias. We have published six issues so far. The latest one was published in April 2023 and it has been added recently to the database (submission #5652271).

I noticed that two more records appeared, probably submitted by someone else but approved by you. They somehow duplicate the info (with much less detail), but incorrectly state that Histórias Extraordinárias is an ANTHOLOGY, which it is not. It is a magazine that publishes new material.

The incorrect publication records are: #950021 and #950023. We just launched all six issues in digital versions (PDF) so I believe that the submitter wants to include them. I agree that they should appear as different format, but we should at least just duplicate the existing information (which is "official" and more comprehensive) changing only the format. Can you please help us in this regard once we sort out these two "rogue" records? :)

Not a Variant

Hello Kraang, I recently submitted two title update requests because I noticed a typo in the title of a short sory and its accompaining interiorart.

Issue 1 of "Histórias Extraordinárias" magazine (December 2020) contains a short story called "Hypnos e Morfeu". However, when inserting the data months ago, I wrote "Morfeus" (with an "s") instead of "Morfeu". The story also has an interiorart which received the same name (wrong, with the 's').

I noticed the error last week and submitted two requests:

1) Submission #5661908 to change the short story title (Title Record #3076119)

2) Submission #5661909 to change the interiorart title (Title Record #3076118)

The titles are shared by the bedsheet and ebook publications (ebook is a clone of the bedsheet).

However, while for the interiorart it seems all ok, the short story lists the correct name as a variant of the old name, which it is not. The old title should be deleted and the corrected title should be kept. We should just correct the typo, not create a variant.

It currently appears as --> Variant Title of: Hypnos e Morfeus (by Marcus Garrett) [may list more publications, awards, reviews, votes and covers]

Can you please help with this?

I believe that deleting this record would be enough to break this "variant link" but I am not sure, so I am asking for your help.

Please keep an eye for the "Language mismatch" warnings when approving imports: this should not have been approved - instead a new cover should have been created for the Dutch books and then varianted. Magazines dating question

Hello Kraang,

Can you clarify the approved date here? We date magazines based on their cover date and if another means is used, it needs to be in the notes. Deal so little with magazines I forget about all the different rules, only approved the edit to get the stories. Please change the date to what it should be, I'll try to be more careful with magazine submissions in the future or I might just avoid magazine submissions altogether no matter how correct it looks. The new Amazon image to which you have linked is the correct cover and it is Artwork B; it's just that the hb cover is much darker than the pb and ebook covers. The image is not ideal because it has the "Copyrighted Material" watermarks at top and bottom. Let me know whether you'd like me to upload and link a scan from my copy or whether you'd prefer to do it yourself. Also, the pub record needs to have the current Artwork A coverart record removed and the Artwork B coverart record imported. You recently moderated this publication but did not take account of the note I made in reference to the cover art credit which is still wrong - shows Kevin Eugene Johnson not Steve Crisp. I can't edit the credit to the correct one since it's linked to the 'other' cover (the one by Johnson) that is decidedly not the same as the Steven Crisp cover. Eça de Queiroz

There are differences, the translation reduces the 20 chapters to 17, I've read that it changes some things, but I would have to compare, Le caverne dei diamanti is described as a version of the story and not just a translation. Please be careful when adding additional authors: a reducement of chapters points toward an abridgement (which is no new version). These do occur quite frequently within translations.

For "King Solomon's Mines" Portuguese Wikipedia only writes of a translation, and notes no differences; as does the cover of this publication. Christian Stonecreek (talk) 10:32, 19 November 2023 (EST)

I found a Portuguese blog that says that Allan (called Alão Quartermar) in Eça's version, mentions knowing about Ophir, something that is not in the original text, I read and compared the two chapters on Wikisource:

Haggard: "'Ay,' said Evans, 'but I will spin you a queerer yarn than that;' and he went on to tell me how he had found in the far interior a ruined city, which he believed to be the Ophir of the Bible, and, by the way, other more learned men have said the same long since poor Evans' time. I was, I remember, listening open-eared to all these wonders, for I was young at the time, and this story of an ancient civilisation and of the treasures which those old Jewish or Phœnician adventurers used to extract from a country long since lapsed into the darkest barbarism took a great hold upon my imagination, when suddenly he said to me, 'Lad, did you ever hear of the Suliman Mountains up to the north-west of the Mashukulumbwe country?' I told him I never had. 'Ah, well,' he said, 'that is where Solomon really had his mines, his diamond mines, I mean.'

Queiroz: And he then told me that in the interior, very inland, he had discovered an ancient city, completely in ruins, which he was sure was Ophir, the famous Ophir of the Bible. I remember well the impression and amazement with which I heard the story of this Phoenician city lost in the African wilderness, with its remains of palaces, pools, temples, collapsed columns!... But then Evans remained silent, wondering. Suddenly he says:

— Have you ever heard of the Suliman mountains, some large mountains that lie beyond the territory of Machuculumbe, to the northwest?

— No, I never heard.

— Well, my boy, that's where Solomon truly had his mines, his diamond mines!ersion

— How do you know?

— How do you know!? It's funny! It is perfectly known. What is Suliman if not a corruption of Solomon? The name of the mountains, in fact, has always been Solomon's mountains. Furthermore, a witch from the district of Manica, an old woman over a hundred years old, told me everything... That is, she told me that beyond the mountains there live a people who are of the Zulu race, and speak a dialect Zulu; but as strength and corpulence, and courage, it is worth more than the Zulus. For among these people there are seers, great sorcerers, who from generation to generation have brought the secret of a prodigious mine, which belonged to a very ancient white king, and which is still full of white stones that shine... Luckily that there is no doubt.

For me there was all doubt. The ruins of Ophir interested me, as well as our belief and the Bible; but at the mines of shining white stones, known in secret by Zulu sorcerers, I would certainly have laughed had it not been for the respect due to such a worthy hunter as Evans. At dawn Evans left, ending up sadly on the butts of a buffalo. And I no longer thought about Solomon, nor about his diamond mines. ~

Still, adding a bit of information (or bettering an original text) in a translation does not add up to a completely new version. Other translators would perhaps add something like that in a footnote. There are numerous examples of translators enhancing an original version but don't getting any credit (except in note). And that's the crucial point here: according to the help pages, the author's name should be entered exactly as it actually appeared in the publication (that is, the title page of a novel publication).
