Help:How to
Revision as of 09:19, 17 January 2007 by Mike Christie (talk | contribs) (→Connections between data: Add Series How-to)
The links below lead to explanations of how to do some common tasks within the ISFDB.
Entering data
- How to enter a new novel ISFDB doesn't know about
- How to enter a new book that isn't a novel
- How to enter a new book that's almost identical to one already in the ISFDB
- How to enter a foreign-language edition of a book or magazine
Connections between data
- How to merge two authors
- How to tell the ISFDB that author X is really a pseudonym of author Y
- How to tell the ISFDB that two works are really the same
- How to tell the ISFDB that two editions are really the same
- How to tell the ISFDB that two different titles by the same author are really the same work
- How to tell the ISFDB that two books listed under the same title should be split into two titles
(or, how to move a publication from one title to another) - How to tell the ISFDB that there are two authors who have exactly the same name
- How to connect a magazine serialization to the novel it serializes
- How to organize books and stories into series
Deleting and modifying data
- How to delete a book from the ISFDB
- How to change information about an author
- How to change information about a book that is incorrect
- How to remove a story (or other content) from a book
- How to tell the ISFDB that you've checked data and found that it's correct
Notes
Note that there is no way to directly delete an author. If all the title information for an author is deleted, the author will disappear from the ISFDB, but there is no "Delete Author" function. Similarly, there is no way to directly create an author; once a work by that author is entered, an author record will appear automatically.
