::If a page number can be derived from counting back or forward then it should be given without brackets. We only use brackets if the starting page is within a range of pages without numbers, and you can't count back or forward to derive that number, i.e. you can only start from the beginning of the range of unnumbered pages to determine the page on which the content appears. In most cases, this method of bracketing is used when there are no page numbers in the entire book, or if there is content on pages before the pagination begins (usually at the front of a book.) Don't use brackets if the book designer chooses not to number a title page. This happens to at least half the books in my collection, probably more if I took the time to figure the percentage. Welcome!

Hello, JudgeDeadd, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -DES Talk 01:03, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Publications in different languages

Hi. I accepted your submission of Podróż Czechowa, but I made a small change. Rather than adding publications in different languages to the English title (Chekov's Journey, in this case) as we used to do, we are now adding titles in the same language and making those titles variants of the work's original language. So I created the Polish title for this publication and then made it a variant of the English. If you look at the Chekov's Journey link above or Ian Watson's bibliography, you can see how it comes out. Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 10:50, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Bajtek

Please add the correct pub format/binding to this record. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 01:48, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Done. But the page Help:Entering non-genre magazines suggests this is unnecessary ("Leave the "Pub Format" field blank"). JudgeDeadd 08:19, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
That help page was created back when "Pub Format" was optional. Apparently it wasn't updated when the field was converted to a drop-down list. I'll go ahead and remove the offending line. Thanks for identifying the problem! Ahasuerus 13:56, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Эллинский секрет

Re: "Эллинский секрет", could you please review this discussion? Thanks! Ahasuerus 13:52, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

So I understand I should transliterate the author names? OK, will do JudgeDeadd 15:01, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
That's right. However, I would advise to go easy on Cyrillic submissions until we improve support for non-Latin names. I expect to get it done within the next few months, at which point we will need to convert... let me check... 810 author names. Ahasuerus 15:31, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I see. Then I'll hold off on submitting this until all technical details are fixed. JudgeDeadd 17:04, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Księżycowa nostalgia

Hello, I've approved the submission for Księżycowa nostalgia. As you own the book, please indicate its binding/format as it will appear on an error report. Hauck 14:30, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Sorry - my oversight. Fixed. JudgeDeadd 17:13, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Casper

I changed this publication to a CHAPBOOK (a book with a single work of fiction of less than 40000 words), adding a SHORTFICTION content. I also normalized the publisher credit. Mhhutchins|talk 15:19, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. It didn't occur to me that it was likely too short for a novel by ISFDB definition JudgeDeadd 19:53, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Mary Poppins in Polish

Please add the publication format/binding to this record. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 19:36, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Done. Apologies! JudgeDeadd 20:11, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Use of brackets when paging contents

Re this publication: Only use brackets for the starting pages of contents which appear in a range of pages which are not numbered,. If a specific unnumbered page is within a range of numbered pages, you can determine its number by going backward or forward to the next numbered page. Mhhutchins|talk 05:10, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

I used brackets because each such page was within a short range of unnumbered pages in the middle of the book (e.g. pages 190-194 are unnumbered, hence I wrote [193] instead of 193.) Or does the "range of pages which are not numbered" only mean ranges of pages at the beginning or end of a book? JudgeDeadd 06:40, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
If a page number can be derived from counting back or forward then it should be given without brackets. We only use brackets if the starting page is within a range of pages without numbers, and you can't count back or forward to derive that number, i.e. you can only start from the beginning of the range of unnumbered pages to determine the page on which the content appears. In most cases, this method of bracketing is used when there are no page numbers in the entire book, or if there is content on pages before the pagination begins (usually at the front of a book.) Dates of translated titles

The publication date of a translated title should be the year in which that translation was first published. Are you certain that the C. S. Lewis titles were published in Poland during the same year as the English editions? Mhhutchins|talk 08:26, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Oh, God. No. I have no idea what I was thinking. I replaced them with the proper years now. JudgeDeadd 15:22, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
