Welcome!

Hello, Toddmaines, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! BLongley 13:07, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Entering pieces crediting more than one author

I'v changed the author credit of this piece from "Mike Resnick and John Kenny" to "Mike Resnick" and "John Kenny". Each author is individually credited in their own field. (Otherwise the story is only credited to the one author with the name "Mike Resnick and John Kenny".) There's a button following each author field (Author1) labeled "Add Author", which once click on opens a new field for Author2. Thanks and welcome to the ISFDB. Linking uploaded images to records

Thanks for uploading a cover image to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link the image to the record of the book for which this is the cover. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 18:13, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Nightscapes Volume 1.

I have accepted your addition of Nightscapes Volume 1, but made some changes to bring it inline with ISFDB standards:

  • Authors: Only one author should be entered in an Author entry box. If there is more than one author, you need to use the "Add Author" button to add addition author fields.
  • Author Names: When an author has multiple initials (as in "C. W. LaSart"), the two initials need to be separated with a space.
  • ISBN: If a pub has a 13 digit ISBN (anything after 2007), the full ISBN should used. ISBNs should not have a "#" at the start (that indicates a catalog number for non-ISBN publications).
  • Price: The price should be the list price, not a discount price.
  • Binding/Format: I changed the format from "paperback" to "tp". The ISFDB uses a specific set of values. I used "tp" (for trade paperback) based on the dimensions supplied by Amazon.
  • Image:We can only use images from sites that have explicitly given us permission to do so. See ISFDB:Image linking permissions for a list of such sites. I have changed the image to Amazon.
  • Web Pages: Web page links are discussions about the publication; not for Amazon or publisher pages.

We do appreciate your submission. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning, but everything should be in the help links in the welcome message above. We hope you will continue to contribute. And please let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking). -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:53, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

The author field of the title record should have also been updated to credit the three authors instead of one continuous one. I'll do it. Mhhutchins 20:59, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
Also, I just discovered that there was already a publication record for this book in the database. I'll delete it. Mhhutchins 21:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
Another point: You have Jennifer Wilson as one of the editors. I found that Jennifer M. Wilson is the actual editor here, while the original Jennifer Wilson could very well be old enough to be her mother. All people should be required to have at least one middle name....--Dirk P Broer 23:19, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
To deal with Dirk's discovery above, I modified the pub and its title to use Jennifer Wilson (I), making that a pseudonym for Jennifer M. Wilson. I don't know what you all think: It might be better to change Jennifer Wilson to Jennifer Wilson (Artist) and rename Jennifer Wilson (I) to plain Jennifer Wilson.... Dirk has found another Jennifer Wilson artist, but she does not seem to be a spec-fic cover artist/illustrator, so I suppose we can cross that bridge if we ever come to it. --MartyD 04:06, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
