Welcome!

Hello, RogerTaft, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 12:18, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Dan Spain, Milo Hastings, and The Book of Gud"

Hi, and welcome! I found your proposed change to The Book of Gud. The way we handle titles written under pseudonyms is to make a "variant" title, substituting the real author's name (what the help calls the "canonical" name -- the name we've chosen as the main way to identify a particular author) for the pseudonym. Trying to put notes in parentheses after the author's name in the Author: field actually would cause an author with that whole block of text to be created, which is not what you intended. You make a variant title by starting in the same place from which you edited the title; the link is "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work". I've rejected (sorry -- don't let that daunt you) your submission and have gone and made this variant for you. I also made Dan Spain a pseudoynm for Milo Hastings, and you can see how their respective bibliographies look. Thank you for contributing! If you have any questions, just reply here (use the edit button at the top right of this section, and indent your response using a leading colon (":" -- one per level of indentation). Again, welcome. --MartyD 12:30, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Marty. Just discoverd ISFDB. Great site.
The connection between Dan Spain and Milo Hastings if from "Looking Backward Into the Future," Harold Hersey, Golden Atom, issue of 1954-55. Should that article be listed in the Harold Hersey entry?
Also, A. Langley Searles published the SF fanzine "Fantasy Commentator" on and off and for decades. Should that be in his listing?

The ISFDB:Policy#Rules_of_Acquisition (often referred to as "RoA") say that paper-based fanzines are "in". So yes, you could enter them if you want to. FYI, see Magazines and Fanzines for some lists. This help: Help:How_to_link_a_magazine_to_its_wiki_page_and_add_it_to_a_magazine_series describes how to put a new "genre" magazine in place. For articles appearing in magazines whose primary content is not SF, see Help:Entering_non-genre_magazines. If you want to try something and need a hand, the best place to ask is ISFDB:Help_desk -- many people will see your question and be able to help you out based on their expertise. --MartyD 10:44, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Looking Backwards Into the Future

You just submitted an entry for Looking Backwards Into the Future. You made it of type NONFICTION, which should mean a book-length work (shorter works of non-fiction are of type ESSAY).

You gave the date as "1954-55-00", but dates should be of form YYYY-MM-DD (with 00 for unknown month or day). The ISFDB does not support date ranges, if a publication carries a cover date of, say "December 1955 - January 1956" the date would be "1955-12-00".

You filled in the "Page" field with "45-68". This field is supposed to be the page count for a book-length or other-wise separately published work. See Help:Screen:NewPub (the pages section).

It looks to me as if you are trying to add an essay that appeared in a book or magazine. For this, you need to edit the publication record of the book or magazien, and add a content item there.

If you have questions, i will try to answer them.

I have placed your submission "on hold" until you respond, indicating more clearly what you have in mind. -DES Talk 17:31, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

David, look at the reference for footnote #2 in this Wikipedia article. It refers to an essay "Looking Backward into the Future" (note the spelling of "Backward" without an "s".) Also, Golden Atom was a fanzine published by Larry B. Farsaci (note the spelling of the last name). There was an issue issued dated simply "1954-55". Hope this helps. This tends to confirm my suspicion that this was an attempt to enter an essay in a publication we do not yet have any record for. (We have a review of Golden Atom, but no issue records).
To proceed, an entry for Golden Atom would need to be created. I don't have the data to do that. My temptation is to simply reject this, but I will hold off until either you or RogerTaft responds further, as I don't want to lose possibly useful info. But I think that eventually the current submission will need to be discarded (and a new one created for the proper publication), unless I have badly misunderstood the situation. -DES Talk 19:25, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh the title I quoted above was copied directly from the pending submission, final "s" on backwards included. -DES Talk 19:27, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes I noticed that the submission differed from the data I was able to google. If you'd like for me to add the fanzine with the essay, you can reject the submission. I'll link the record I create back to here so that RogerTaft can check it out. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:44, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Done. over to you. -DES Talk 20:02, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
RogerTaft, I created this record for the fanzine Golden Atom which published the article by Hersey. Please look it over and add other data if you have a copy of it. Also verify the spelling of the editor/publisher's name. Some sources spell it as "Farsaci". Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Fantasy Commentator

I have a submission wishing to create a record for this fanzine. I'm assuming it's an attempt to create a stub record. In cases as this, there is a minimum amount of information required in order to create the record. There should be one record for each issue. I'll accept the submission and date it as the first issue and supply further information based on secondary sources. If you have issues of this fanzine, please consider creating records for them. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 18:24, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
