Grounded

Hi, and welcome. I accepted your submission of Grounded and made a couple of minor changes to have it conform to ISFDB standards:

  • I changed the Pub Format from "Paperback" to "tp", which we use for all large paperbacks. See Help:Screen:EditPub#Pub_Format_.28Binding.29 for details about how formats/bindings should be recorded.
  • I moved the Pub. Series info to the title as a Title Series. This one bites nearly everyone, as there is no way to provide Title Series information when recording a new publication; you have to wait for the submission to be accepted, then go edit the title that gets created to supply the Title Series. Pub. Series is for publisher-specific series that would change (or go away) if another publisher published the same work. Usually the works in a Pub. Series are not directly related by content. Title Series is for work-specific series that would still be true/present if another publisher published the work. Titles in a Title Series are usually directly related by content (characters, setting, etc.).
  • You don't need to include "#" on series number entries. Just put the number. The system will sort in numerical order when displaying a series.
  • I found an image on Amazon while researching this and added it to the record.

Non Quis, Sed Quis

"Sorry, I was rushing and should have researched Non Quis, Sed Quis a little more before accepting it. It looks to me like the ISBN you provided on it is for Demons: Encounters with the Devil and His Minions, Fallen Angels, and the Possessed. Was this "Non Quis, Sed Quis" piece actually published separately as a chapbook? If not, we would not record it as a separate publication, rather we would record Demons and add this as shortfiction content to it. Let me know, and I will fix it up appropriately. Yeah MartyD, it's actually a short fiction story in Demons: Encounters with the Devil and His Minions, Fallen Angels, and the Possessed anthology. It's by Maggie Stiefvater, but it's a short fiction included only in that book currently. So adding it to short fiction would be all right. Mergekat 19:18, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Mergekat

Hounded

I rejected the submission to create a variant record of this title for the ebook version. We only create variant titles if the title or the author credit is different. Go to the pub record of the print edition and click on "Clone This Pub" under the Editing Tools menu. On the next screen change all the fields so that they match the data of the ebook version, adding content records for any bonus short stories. And then submit. Thanks. "I've accepted the submission, but had to make changes in order for the record to comply with ISFDB standards. These standards are explained in the Help pages linked in the Welcome section at the top of this page.

  • Changed the date to 2012-03-13 (based on the Amazon listing).
  • Changed "Trade Paperback" to "tp".
  • Added the currency to "12.95" as "$12.95".
  • Removed the link from a server for which we don't have permission to link.

I also added the title record to the series "Clan Destrati". (This can only be done after a record has been created.) Because this was entered as a collection, you should add title records in the content section for the stories in the book. Cast of Characters

I made some changes to this record based on ISFDB standards. The publication date was updated to that shown by Amazon. The link to the cover image was corrected (you'd linked it to the Amazon page, not to the Amazon image file), and the binding was changed to "tp" indicating a trade paperback. Publication entry standards

Please read this help page when you get a chance. There are several submissions of yours sitting in the queue because it appears that the other moderators have chosen to ignore them due to the multiple errors in them. It seems I have taken on the role of the bad guy, mainly because I'm the one who takes the time to tutor new editors. Please forgive my frankness, but just a few minutes looking over the help page that I've linked to will clear up many of the problems with your submissions. I've seen in the past that some of your submissions have been accepted and then cleaned up without bringing the errors to your attention. Sorry, but that's not my way. I'll help you as much as I can, and it may first appear to be harsh. After all, none of us are getting paid here. We do it for the love of the literature, and some, like me, are just bibliography-philes. Here goes:

I've accepted the submission adding this publication of The Dark Thorn. Here are the problems.

  • Date field: Not an error but if you know the date of publication it should be included. If only the year is known, then it's OK.
  • Binding field: "Hardcover" is not one of accepted formats. It should be entered as "hc"
  • Price field: A publication can only have one price. If there are two states of the book with different prices, then a separate record must be created.
  • Cover artist field: Only the name of the cover artist should go into this field. A map is considered interior art and is added as a content record using the INTERIORART type.
  • This record's cover image is linked to a website for which we don't have permission to "deep-link". The link should be removed. If you have a copy of the file on your hard drive (or can download it from the other server to your hard drive), you can upload it to the ISFDB server using the "Upload new cover scan" link.

Click on the link "Edit This Pub" under the editing tools menu when you're able to make the corrections.

Ebook of The Dark Thorn

"I've accepted the submission adding this record to the database. Here are the problems:

  • ISBN/Catalog # field. Don't use a merchant's ID number in this field. Only use a number that is stated in the publication. In the case of ASINs, those are specific to Amazon and are neither ISBNs nor publisher catalog numbers. If you want them as part of the record, you can add them to the Note field.
  • Publisher field. Is the publisher given as "Grim Oak Press (Speakman's Press)" in the publication? In the hardcover edition you gave the publisher as Grim Oak Press. Is Speakman's Press an imprint of the publisher?
  • Binding: "ebook" is sufficient. You can record the formats in the Note field.
  • Cover artist field: same problem as in the previous submission. Only the cover artist should be credited here, and without adding "(Cover Art)" to his name, which the database interprets as his true name.

Also on the publisher field part, I wasn't certain on that because Amazon.com just calls it Speakman Press, but it's called Grimm Oak Press at the Goodreads book site. I know the author does operate Grim Oak Press (as the website: http://grimoakpress.com/ ), but I wasn't sure because of that Amazon detail. Not exactly sure which to I should stick to. Until you've gained a more complete knowledge of publication record entry and editing, it would probably be best to only enter books which you have in-hand. Otherwise you have to rely on secondary sources which may not be as reliable as the real thing. It's the experience of entering your own collection which will give you the knowledge to determine which sources are providing good data, and which ones only want to sell you a product. In this case, Amazon's "Look-Inside" shows the publisher as Speakman Press. Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:38, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for having to reject two of your submissions...

... but they had so much faults in them that it would be a hell of a load of work to correct them.

1) It is not OK to add synopses to the titles of stories, even if this should have been the case in this anthology. We do have an extra field for them in the title editor screen.

2) No suffixes as '(Cover artist)' or '(Editor)' should be added (see above for earlier problems with these).

3) Again, you gave 'Paperback' as binding. For books we do have three possible bindings: hc, tp or pb. Which of them does apply in your submission? Please look at the help pages.

4) It's better to leave the date field blank for individual stories: either they are first publications (in which case the correct date is automatically added) or they have to be merged with earlier publications.

5) It's better to choose for shortfiction 'short story', 'novelette' or 'novella', if you know the length of them (for shortfictions previously published you may use the resources of ISFDB).

6) If you know the exact publication date, why don't you enter it in the corresponding field in the publication record?

7) Notes to the moderator as in your second submission are always lost, although it'd be of interest for other users. We do have a notes field for titles and for publications. It's better to use them if you want to inform poentially all users.

8) The price field should include only the price (no additions like '+ shipping').

I had some difficult time with this decision with a night's sleep over it (and that's why it took its time). All other options would have taken so much longer, especially to change all contents with the faults listed under 1). So, please, no hard feelings.

I know it is a huge amount of text, but it'd be best if you look into the help pages before entering very interesting but workload adding submissions. Sorry again! Stonecreek 06:30, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Image linking

Here's the help page that explains image linking and the sites which have given us permission to link to them. If the server is not on this list, you can always download the file of the image to your own computer's hard drive and then upload it to the ISFDB server. The Anthology from Hell

I downloaded the cover image from the Yard Dog website, then resized it to ISFDB standards (no more than 600 pixels tall, and no more than 150 kb in file size). I then uploaded it to the ISDFB server and then linked it to the record. I also changed the binding format from "pb" to "tp" (because the book is more than 18 cm or 7 inches). You can now add the contents to the record. Be sure to get the names of the stories and the author's credit from each of the story's title page, not from the contents page. Don't add a description to the title field. That can be done to the title record once the title is in the database. Leave the date field blank when entering content records and the system will automatically date them the same as the publication. If a story is a reprint, you can then merge it with the record already in the database which has the first date of publication. If you have any questions, just ask here. Thanks for contributing. Two and Twenty Dark Tales

I've accepted the submission adding this new anthology even though we try not to create records for titles that are more than 3 months from being published. So much can happen in 6 months. Also, I removed the link for the cover image on the Goodreads website. We do not have permission to deep-link to images on their server. Please read this help page concerning image linking permissions. You can download the file of the cover image to your hard drive and then upload it to the ISFDB sever using the "Upload cover scan" link in the publication record. (I see that I've already explained this before, but perhaps you didn't read the message.)

Another very important thing to remember when adding books which you do not have in hand: you must provide the source for your data in the record's note field. This is not an option. Mhhutchins 05:05, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mhhutchins, on the topic of website about Shawn Speakman I looked up his further info from his Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Speakman/654276782 .

It mentions that he set up Grim Oak Press as his own main publisher firm. And at The Signed Page website (http://signedpage.com/) he is sole proprietor of that store that sells author signed books. So both websites are ones he runs. Mergekat 19:46, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

He may own it and run it, but it's not specific enough about him as an author that an ISFDB user wanting further information about him would need to go there. We also ordinarily don't link to commercial sites, and this one's main purpose seems to be to sell books. I've rejected the submission. Two Ravens and One Crow

Your submission to add this record was accepted, but several changes had to me made in order for it to comply with ISFDB standards.

  1. CHAPTERBOOK type records require a content record of the SHORTFICTION type. I added it to the record.
  2. "Iron Druid Chronicles" is not a publication series. It's a title series, and as such, can only be added to the title record. This is done after the title has been created, so it can't be done in a submission to add a publication. I'll update the title record, but I can't give the number "4.5" because the system can only handle whole numbers. (Help with series)
  3. The note you added to the publication record is title specific, not publication specific. So I removed it and placed it into the title record.
  4. I had to remove the link to the cover image on the Goodreads website. As far as I know, we do not have permission to "deep-link" to their server. If you believe they have granted permission for anyone to use their bandwidth in displaying the images on outside websites, please point us to the statement on their website. Alternately, you can snag the image from Goodreads to your hard drive and then upload it to the ISFDB server. Once here, you can update the record to link the cover image. (Help with uploading image files)
  5. I changed the date to 2012-08-27, based on the data you gave in the Note to Moderator field.

You will now need to go back to the record and make a note about the source of your data in the Note field. This is required of all records for which the editor doesn't have the book in hand.

Unfettered

I accepted your submission of Unfettered and had to make a couple of changes, both of which have been mentioned at least a couple of times above. You'd save us moderators some work by looking over Help:Screen:NewPub, available as a link at the top of the screen where you enter a new publication's information, or Help:Screen:EditPub, available as a link at the top of the screen where you edit an existing publication's infomration, as you go along. Changes:

  • "Hardcover" -> "hc" as the binding
  • Removed the image URL link to http://grimoakpress.com, to which we do not have permission to link, and replaced it with an uploaded copy of that cover image (I just downloaded it from Grim Oak and then uploaded it after the publication submission was accepted and used the link to that uploaded cover image).

"The Jester" and "The Duel"

I approved your note in The Jester, but I am wondering if the story is perhaps part of Sullivan's Riyria Revelations series and should be placed into that instead? --MartyD 12:50, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi MartyD, on those short stories since they are coming out next year I don't know all the details. From what bit of info the Grim Oak Press site said it sounds like they are just short, side stories. One focusing in the Riyria world and the other in the Fillory "Magician" world. If I took a wild guess on The Jester story I think that one might be focusing in on a secondary character named Magnus (a dwarf and a former jester) from the Riyria Revelations series. Not a 100% certain though. More information I'm sure will be updated closer to its publication time. --Mergekat 5:46, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Hunted

There are many problems with this submission, most of which were explained in messages left here on your talk page from moderators who worked on your earlier submissions. I have chosen not to repair them, but instead will allow you to do it.

  • The publication date should be given in the Date field as 2013-06-25. Remove it from the Note field.
  • The link you gave in the Image URL field was to the Amazon listing page. You should give only the URL of the image file. (If you don't know how to get the URL of an image file, just ask, or look in the help section.)
  • "The Iron Druid Chronicle" and the series number "6" was incorrectly given in the publication series field. This is a title series and should be entered into the title record. This can only be done after a submission for the publication record has been accepted. You will need to remove it from the publication record and move it to the title record. While you're doing that you need to update the Date field, and remove all spoilers from the synopsis field. They are not allowed in the ISFDB synopsis.
  • And the most important thing: you did not give the source for your data in the record's Note field. This is required of all records which are based on secondary sources, i.e. the book isn't in your hand.

The Wells Bequest

I'm holding a submission to add a record of this title, but it has a couple of problems. First, you gave the source for your data in the record's "Note to Moderator" field. This is a temporary field which doesn't become a permanent part of the record. It should not be used to provide data about the publication or anything which you wish to be visible in the record. It should be used to provide additional information to the moderator to assist in the decision to accept the submission. If you're not working from an actual copy of the publication, you must provide the source of your data in the record's "Note" field, so that the moderator and all subsequent users of the database have a clear understanding of where the data came from, giving a better way for them to determine the reliability of the data.

One other problem: you gave the title series in the publication series field. The difference has been explained to you more than once (see the message above about Two Ravens and Hunted.) The price and format are also missing from the submission (both of which are available on Amazon.com).

Writing Fantasy Heroes

There are several problems with the submission, and it would be better to have you repair them than for the moderator to continue correcting the same errors. If you had read the previous messages left here, you would have learned that there are several things that you've been doing incorrectly. I'm not going to go through them again. But by reading the messages you will learn how to avoid the same mistakes. Now that I know you'll reading your talk page, I'm going to accept the submission for Writing Fantasy Heroes, and I'll list here everything you will need to do to fix the record.
  1. You did not give the source for your data in the record's Note field. Instead you give an unlinked URL to Amazon for more info. If your data is entirely from Amazon state "Data from Amazon as of 2013-03-30." If your data is from the book itself, you should have left a message in the Note to Moderator field, letting me know that the "Data from book in hand".
  2. You did not give the currency in the Price field. It should be "$14.99".
  3. You gave the format of the publication as "pb" which stands for mass-market sized paperbacks (up to 7 inches tall). According to the Amazon listing, this book is 8.5 inches which makes it a trade paperback and should be entered as "tp".
  4. You entered the contents as NONFICTION. Any short work of nonfiction, that is if it's contained in another publication, whether that is a magazine or book of any type, should be types as ESSAY. So, you'll have to correct each of the content record's type to ESSAY.
  5. Any generically titled essay should be disambiguated by adding parenthetically the title of the container publication. So the "Foreword" should be titled "Foreword (Writing Fantasy Heroes: Powerful Advice from the Pros)".
  6. The "synopsis" you added to the record is taken from Amazon, and reads more like a publisher's blurb. All synopses must be impartial and objective. You'll need to fix this one, or remove it entirely if you're unable to reword it to ISFDB standards.
If you have the actual book, please look at its title page. Is the subtitle Powerful Advice from the Pros given on the title page on only on the front cover? If it isn't on the title page, it should not be included in the Title field of the publication record.

Grimoire of the Lamb

Several problems with the submission adding this record. I'll make the corrections but ask you to again look over the guidelines that I've already given you, which would have prevented many of this record's problems.

  1. The title given is incorrect. According to the Amazon listing, it should be Grimoire of the Lamb, not The Grimoire of the Lamb.
  2. Publisher should be "Del Rey / Ballantine" giving the imprint and the publisher in the field (a look through records in the database would confirm that this is the ISFDB standard for this publisher).
  3. Page field was changed from "76" to "0". Kindle ebooks don't have pages.
  4. Format field was changed from "sf" to "ebook"
  5. Price field was changed from "2.99" to "$2.99". Because this is for international publications, the field requires the currency.
  6. You did not give the source for your data in the record's Note field. This is required for all records when the book isn't in your hand (or your ebook reader).
  7. CHAPTERBOOK records is a container-type publication (i.e. COLLECTION, ANTHOLOGY, MAGAZINE), and require a content record. I've added one for a novella of the SHORTFICTION type with the same name.

Alright, thanks. I actually wasn't sure on those few things. Such as there really isn't an add a short story or short fiction button on the "Add New Data" links to use. Also I was referencing both the Amazon ebook site and the Goodreads one for more details http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16280685-the-grimoire-of-the-lamb . Also I wasn't sure about the choice of abbreviations in the case of whether using novella or ebooks in that format field. So again, thanks for clarifying that up. Mergekat, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
There is no "Add a Short Story" link, because SHORTFICTION is a content type, not a publication type. They are entered as a content record of a publication. (They can't be entered alone.) When the work is novel-length, the "container" is a NOVEL publication type, and the system automatically creates a content record of the same name. Because occasionally, a piece of less-than-novel length fiction is published as a standalone, we created the CHAPTERBOOK publication type. The editor creating the record must manually create a content record for it. Just as when you create contents in a MAGAZINE, ANTHOLOGY, or COLLECTION. (My use of capitals here is the ISFDB standard of designating types of records.)
The format/binding field is for a description of the publication (the object in your hand), not the title. Here is a list of all acceptable entries for that field. It's part of the page which I've mentioned before, one that should be used as a guide to creating publication records. Every field of the entry form is explained on this page with guidelines about what and how the data should be given in each field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:39, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Sourcing data

When adding a new record, or updating records, you must give the source of the data in the record's Note field. If you're working from a book in hand, please let the moderator know that in the "Note to Moderator" field. What is the source for the data that created this record? Story length field

With few exceptions, this field should only be used to indicate one of the three designated lenghts for SHORTFICTION: ss, nt, nv. What is meant by "312" in this record? Mhhutchins 18:25, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Every Never After

According to the OCLC record this book has 244 pages and is 21 cm tall, which makes it a "tp" if it has a softcover. I found the price on Amazon.ca, and a cover image. The publisher should be entered as "Razorbill (Canada)". I'll make these corrections to the record, giving my source for the data. What is the source? Mhhutchins 18:35, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

It also says there it has 256 actual pages which I did find it does when I purchased the book. But oddly, only has 244 numbered in it (I guess they don't count the author bio and table of contents). Now and For Never

A few problems with this record, several of which was brought to your attention about earlier submissions.

  • We normally don't accept records for publications that are more than 90 days from publishing. So much can change in the meantime, between announcements and actual publication. I've made an exception in this case.
  • As mentioned in a previous message, this is probably a trade paperback and should be entered as "tp". Of course, we won't know until publication. But at $15.00 I doubt it's a mass market paperback ("pb") which is 7 inches tall or less. (You have been informed about the difference several times. Please read the previous messages.)
  • If this is a Canadian publication, and I can assume from the publisher given, then the price should be given in Canadian dollars as "C$15.00".
  • The publisher will probably just be given as "Razorbill" when the book is eventually published. Because there is a separate division for Canadian publishing, we enter their books as "Razorbill (Canada)".
  • "Never" is not a publication series. It's a title series and the data can only be entered in the title record, which is created upon acceptance of the publication. So you can't add title series data until after the publication record is in the database. (This was brought to your attention in a previous message.)
  • You didn't give the source for your data in the record's "Note" field. This is required. Do not put source data in the "Note to Moderator" field. Again, you've been told this before. Do not use Goodreads as a primary source for information on publications. It is frequently mistaken. You can use Amazon for forthcoming publications (within 90 days of publication), but make a note such as "Data from Amazon as of 2014-01-30."
