Welcome!

Hello, MLEX, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:53, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Daughter of Is

When making changes to verified publications, you should leave a note on the verifier's talk page (some people have specific instructions at the top of the page as to their notification preferences, please follow those if present). Also, it is always good to source non-obvious (i.e. not directly printed in the book) information within the publication notes. As such, I have accepted your edit, but:

  1. Notified Rtrace of the change
  2. Edited the pub to place your moderator comment (which gets dropped on approval) into the notes field.

The ISFDB has a number of conventions and it can take a bit to become familiar with all of them. I encourage you to read through the help (see links in welcome message above). Also, feel free to ask questions (either here in response to this or if a new topic you can post questions at the ISFDB:Help desk‎). We appreciate your contribution. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:53, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Emperor Fu Manchu

I have accepted your new publication for Emperor Fu Manchu, but have made the following changes:

  1. Publisher changed from Fawcett to Fawcett Gold Medal.
  2. Format changed from paperback to pb. We have a standard set of publication formats that we use.
  3. Added the $ symbol to the price. As we're international, we need to list the currency. This appears to be a US printing, but if not, please correct.
  4. Removed Gold Medal from the "Pub. Series" field based on the publisher change.
  5. Removed the image URL as that is not a site we have permission to link to (see Help:Screen:EditPub#ImageURL).
  6. Moved S929 from "Pub. Series #" to "ISBN / Catalog #". For older books, we use the publisher's catalog number (prefixed with the pound symbol) in place of the ISBN (see Help:Screen:EditPub#ISBN).

Do you have the book? If so, please fill in the page count and verify the book. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:07, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

The cover scan is uploaded to isfbd here: wiki/images/e/e2/EMPFUMANCHU_1959.jpg I tried linking it by editing the pub record above, but there is no moderator, so not sure how to get it approved? I don't have a copy of that edition, so don't know the page numbers... thanks. Lex 04:07, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

The wiki works differently from the database. You can upload images without moderator approval. However, when you upload the image, you need to do it from the publication listing otherwise it's not in the right place and won't have the right information added. In this case, you needed to wait for the publication creation to be approved, but once a publication exists:
  1. Go to the publication listing
  2. Click the "Upload cover scan" link in listing
  3. Upload the image to the link using the pre-populated summary (which will become the page content). Change any information as necessary.
Once the image is loaded, you can then add it to the publication. I see you found out how to do that as you had a pending edit to add the existing image. However, I had to reject it as the image is not in the right place. Please re-load the image using the steps above and re-submit an edit to add it from the correct location with the correct tagging. Once that's done, I will delete the old image. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:50, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Cover image for Emperor Fumanchu

This file was uploaded incorrectly. It is best to use the semi-automated procedure to upload cover images. The file as uploaded lacks three essential elements: 1) it lacks an image license (this is required of all image files uploaded to the ISFDB server), 2) it lacks a link directed back to the pub record, 3) it doesn't have a unique file name that matches the publication record's "tag". (Look at this recently uploaded image and compare it with the one you uploaded.) Using this method has another perq as well: it links the file to a list of other images by the same artist.

To correct these problems:

  • Go to the pub record here and click on the link "Upload cover scan" and follow the directions on the screen.
  • Once the image file is uploaded, right click on it to get the URL, or left click on it and copy the URL from your browser's address window.
  • Go back to the pub record and click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu.
  • Enter the URL of the file in the "Image URL" field, and submit.

Once the submission has been moderated, the cover image will appear on the publication record's page. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 03:42, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Entering publication records for translated works

First create a publication record by using the "Add New Novel" function. (The link is on the front page of the database.) Once the submission to add the new publication record is accepted, then variant its title record to the English title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:45, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

thanks, I will try it Lex 04:03, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Submission adding this record was accepted, but some changes were made to make it comply with ISFDB standards. (Those standards are in the help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above.)
  • Link to a cover image on an unauthorized website was removed. Here's a list of websites which have given us permission to link to their images.
  • Publication series name "Galaxia" is already in use, so I disambiguated it.
  • You duplicated the publication series name into the field for the title series. They can't be the same. Here is a help page on working with series. This Delany novel is part of the title series named "The Fall of the Towers". But since this is a translation, the title series data goes in the parent (original language) title record. I have varianted the Portugese title to the English title.
If you have any questions about adding or editing records on the ISFDB, post a message on the ISFDB:Help desk. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 04:59, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Exilado no espaço

Hi, I am afraid I'll have to reject your submission, as it would give a lot of afterwards trouble if and when I'd approve it. What do I want you to do? First: Enter the book as new NOVEL using the title 'Exilado no espaço', set the LANGUAGE -Portuguese here- in the title data part, use just 'Humus' as PUBLISHER (we already have that and 'Editora' just means 'publishers') in the publication part. Enter the name of the right cover artist in the right field, if you can find it (look at the signature, does it really read 'Robert P. White' to you? Note that Robert P. White is actually given on this book as being the AUTHOR name) Enter the Goodreads Id '36048739' in the EXTERNAL ID field and choose 'GOODREADS'. Secondly: variant this Portuguese edition to the English original and Thirdly: variant author 'Robert P. White' to author 'R. L. Fanthorpe'.--Dirk P Broer 18:56, 5 January 2020 (EST)

Hi Dirk, sorry, I can scarcely find time to enter or check things at ISFDB, though I love this database! Sorry, I must have entered the forms improperly, the book is by Robert. P. White, and your other comments are correct. Thanks for checking the submission. I will try to improve my understanding of how submissions work and try something else. best, M Lex

Regarding this submission: Instead of creating a variant title, please add the publication using the "Add New Novel" option. This will create a publication with a new title record. That title new record would then be varianted to the original English title record. Having a variant title without a publication is less useful than having the publication. Especially since the information in the title notes actually belongs in the pub record. Let us know if you have questions on that. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:24, 4 December 2021 (EST)
