Val Clear taught Sociology at Anderson University, in Anderson, Indiana, for 33 years, concluding his career as chair of the department of Sociology and Social Work. He wrote frequently on Marriage and the Family, including the use of novels, and science fiction, as a tool for investigating the topic -- e.g. his article "Marriage Education Through Novels and Biography" in the Journal of Marriage and the Family, and his co-editorship of Marriage and the Family Through Science Fiction.
