Dr. Sheila Schwartz was a distinguished professor of English Education at the State University College, New Paltz, New York. She served as the President of the New York Sate English Council and served on the Executive Board of the Conference on English Education of the National Council of Teachers of English. She regularly gave lectures on science fiction, and other young adult literature, in schools and at conferences.
