Welcome!

Hello, Toff, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! MagicUnk 15:47, 25 November 2020 (EST)

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories: Volume Four

Luke Sharp - real name Robert Barr (1849-1912) - the author of one of the short stories, is http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?15670 and not http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?244304

Hello. I've accepted your submission, and made the following change:
  • Uploaded the cover art, since we have no permission to link to valancourbooks.com
  • Moved the publisher's URL to its designated 'Web page' field.
  • Updated format to tp - everything that's larger than 7" x 4.25" is to be recorded as tp (not pb).
  • Updated pub date to 2020-12-01 (as that's what Valancourt says)
  • Added date when data was retrieved from the publisher's website (always a good idea to add source and time of retrieval if it's not from the book itself)
  • Checked for duplicate title records already in the database and merged them.
I've also taken your suggestion at heart, and created an alternate author Luke Sharp (1849), and varianted it to 'Robert Barr'
Oh, and you can always ask questions over at the Help Desk or Community Portal

Author Dates

I'm holding some author edits. What is the source for the dates provided? Are the from the Valancourt Book above? Let me know and I will accept and add the source to the author notes. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:39, 28 November 2020 (EST)

Yes, thanks. Toff 23:52, 7 December 2020 (EST)
Approved & author notes added giving the source. Thank you. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:58, 11 December 2020 (EST)

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, Volume Three

Unfortunately, this submission had to be rejected as it is no longer valid. One of the edited records no longer exists (because it was merged with another record). As such, the submission is not processable. It will need to be re-done. However, if the source of the original publications are known (which I would assume since you have the exact dates), the best thing would not to edit the publication, but click on the individual titles, edit those, and add the original publication (example "Originally published in the The New Yorker, Januray 1, 1960") as a title note. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:01, 13 April 2021 (EDT)

Will do, thanks. Toff 07:55, 14 April 2021 (EDT)

Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories Vol 5

Hello. I've approved your submission, but made the following changes:

  • added month from publisher's website
  • added currency symbol
  • uploaded and replaced image (you selected a publisher which we don't have permission from)

Also, number of pages is missing - since you have the book in hand, please submit correct number of pages. Thanks! MagicUnk 13:56, 1 September 2021 (EDT)

Thanks, will do. Was there a different way I should have added "My Brother's Ghost Story" in a different way so it would link to the first and other publications of that story? Toff 11:14, 2 September 2021 (EDT)
Ah, good question. There are two ways to link multiple publications together if it concerns a single story. Either you enter the COLLECTION as you did, and once your submission is approved go to the left-hand menu 'Check for Duplicate Titles' which will show you identical titles that you can then merge by simply selecting the titles you want to merge (give it a try!), or, you can import the already-existing title records into the publication by selecting 'Import Contents', and then using Option 2 to enter the title ID's you want to import (title ID's are displayed to the right of the title record, or, the numerical part of the title record's URL). I find the former easier, but may require more submissions. Hope this helps. Regards, MagicUnk 11:27, 2 September 2021 (EDT)

The Shrieking Skull & Other Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories

For The Shrieking Skull & Other Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, since these are all stories by a single author, we enter this as a collection. James Skipp Borlase would be the author and the editor information goes into the pub notes. You have verified the pub which means you have compared the actual pub to the record, but the record still has "Data from publisher's website" in the notes. If you are basing this on the publisher's website, then you should remove the verification. If you have the pub, then you should remove the "Data from publisher's website" or refine it to indicate what data might have come from the publisher's website that was not on the book (for example "Price from from publisher's website" if the book does not have a price on it). Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:58, 20 November 2022 (EST)
