Otherwise, please post notices and inquiries only on the talk pages of the other primary verifiers.

Welcome!

Hello, TFRANK, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Ahasuerus 14:19, 23 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Question on Cover Art Attributions

Ahasuerus seems to have dropped into an alternate universe for a while and so I'll answer your question about the cover art credits.

You had written:

One on the items I wished to verify specifies who the cover was drawn by. I can not determine from the copy I have in hand whether that is correct or not. There is no signature or initials on the cover nor notation within the book. Does that affect my ability to verify the entry?TFRANK 23:57, 26 Jul 2007 (CDT)

You can still verify the publication but I would add a note explaining that ISFDB credits name-of-author but that the artist is not credited nor is a signature visible in the publication. In fact, I ran into this late last week where ISFDB credited Bob Eggleton but I could not see this in my book. In that case I added the note about not being able to verify the artist credit, verified the remaining data. I also e-mailed the artist who confirmed that he did the painting plus told me who did the drawing on the back cover. I then updated the publication notes to cite this secondary source for the artist credits.

I've discovered that ISFDB's data tends to be correct and so when I find something that conflicts with one of my books I'll add a note explaining the original data rather than just overwriting it. Probably the only field I'll routinely overwrite is the page count as many of those come from Amazon.com which can be many off.

I'll also extend a welcome to ISFDB and hope you enjoy both looking and editing. You can ask questions on pretty much any of the moderator talk pages and also the ISFDB:Community_Portal plus related pages. Marc Kupper (talk) 01:31, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for stepping in, Marc! I am not exactly stuck in a parallel universe at the moment (although sometimes it feels that way), but my ISFDB time has been sporadic the last few days. Thankfully, I should be reunited with my collection in under 12 hours and, Cthulhu willing, go on a Verification spree :) Ahasuerus 14:18, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)
YOU are finally going on a verification spree? Damn, there goes my number two position. :-( (And Mike's Number 1 position too, I guess.)
Still, I always knew it was temporary. It'll be interesting when Don Erikson starts verifying more, rather than 'just' editing. What will be LEFT for him to verify? I reckon a quarter of my collection at least had already been done by the time I got to them - I have to restrain myself from cloning a verified pub, adding cover-art URL, and claiming another verification as MY version is better! ;-) BLongley 14:52, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)
I am afraid you have nothing to worry about, Bill. I have 3.5 days to spend with my collection (and 8 other things to do in parallel) and then I will be back on the road. One of these days the curse of the Wandering Jew will be lifted, but until then... Ahasuerus 23:10, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)

(Unindent) Oh, and welcome aboard, TFRANK! I'm glad to see you ask questions about how to do things rather than just do them and make us fix them! Do feel free to tell us a bit about yourself on your user page - it's not compulsory, but there's quite a friendly community spirit here and calling you TFRANK makes me feel I'm shouting at you. ;-) (I'm Bill, by the way.) BLongley 15:03, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Not that we need your bank account and credit card numbers :) -- or even your Real Life (tm) name, for that matter -- but some editors have found it useful to post their areas on interest on their User pages, e.g. User:swfritter and User:Mhhutchins. It seems to help coordinate and prioritize different editors' efforts when you know what other folks' have access to and can easily Verify. Ahasuerus 01:01, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

The Best of Wilson Tucker

If you have a copy of this title [1] another thing you can do would be to add the page numbers. Thanks for editing :-)Kraang 06:18, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for reviewing my edits and reminding me about the page numbers on the Best of Wilson Tucker. I think that was the last one I did and must have missed entering that info. I'm still trying to get the hang of the navigation here. I'm sure I haven't found the right way to do so yet.

TFRANK 10:53, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

No worries, once you get the hang of things the editing gets easier. :-)Kraang 20:23, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Chad Oliver's Another Kind

Thanks for adding this new pub. Please keep in mind that when adding a collection or anthology, we strongly suggest also adding the contents. In the case of this publication, there was a hardcover edition already in the database. You can clone (see instructions here) that pub into a new pub, adjusting the fields to correspond with the pub that you're adding. This will save you the time of typing in the contents of the new pub. Again, thanks for the contribution, and welcome to the ISFDB. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the moderators or your fellow editors. Mhhutchins 14:21, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

WIlson Tucker's The Job is Ended

I had to reject your submission of this story, but I think I know what you were trying to do. Your submission had the same date as the issue of Other Worlds in which the story appeared. There happens to be two records of that story on Tucker's summary page that will eventually have to be merged. A title itself cannot be created without a pub. (Well, it can be done, but for newcomers it's best to stick with the basics.) Before I merge the two records, I'll let you look at them to get an idea of the ISFDB's structure. If you feel like it, you can merge them yourself and see the results. By the way, you can answer here on your user page. I've put a watch on it so I'll know when you leave a comment. Use a colon (:) at the beginning of your comment to offset it from mine. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:22, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

We crossed messages or what we call "ping-ponged". While I was writing the above message you were leaving one on my page. Anyway, I think the situation has been resolved. Mhhutchins 21:37, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Thanks. I'm also learning the ettiquete here as well as the tricks.

What I was trying to do was to get a reference to that item you identified. I'm in the process of learning about the dup candidate function for the other collection I entered. I'll look at this one as a reference and if I feel I understand what will happen do it as well. What I did find was that in merging two other entries, I found a descrepancy in each so I assumed I could edit both to bring them in synch. However, response seems to be pretty slow right now. I think I saw a reference to a systems page so maybe there's a posting there about it.TFRANK 22:12, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Yes, it appears there's some trouble with the server. Unusually the Wiki is working, but not the database. Hmmph. Mhhutchins 22:21, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)
I think I get the hang of the merge process and what will happen. Now that I look at the one we're referencing here, I see that there is a mismatch on the title. In the second reference the 'i' is NOT capitalized. In the table of contents of my book it is but again it is NOT capitalized on the copyright page. So in this instance, what should be done?TFRANK 11:40, 29 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Good question! According to the Help: Regularized case means that the first word is capitalized, and all later words are also capitalized except for "and", "the", "a", "an", "for", "of", "in", "on", "by", "at", "from", and "to". So "Is" is preferred to "is" for now, until someone points out how silly an idea that is and gets the rules changed. Which would mean some major updates, so it's probably best to live with it. :-/ (I asked a similar question in my early days here, and still keep the response around here as it doesn't always make sense to me.) Feel free to point out any inconsistencies though. The longer we continue along the "wrong" path the harder it will be to correct eventually, so if we're going wrong pipe up sooner rather than later. BLongley 16:43, 29 Jul 2007 (CDT)
I am interpreting your info to mean I should change the record with "is" to "Is" on its title page. A further complication is that there is a record for the interior art work that also has "is" in the title. Do I edit both? TFRANK 17:00, 29 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Yes, it's best to keep them consistent. There's little harm done if you don't though: people worry most about Titles and Authors and Publications of the actual stories, and Cover/Interior art and Reviews seem to get second place until it causes problems like the Python errors encountered recently. This is why searching for a title often brings up many coverart entries and reviews and you have to find the "Novel" amongst the dross. It would help if we merged cover-art more often, but there's still a possibility that we'll eventually move the cover-art URL entries from the publications to the cover-art entries themselves, in which case we don't want to lose the different versions of the art. It's unlikely, but we're cautious at times. BLongley 18:03, 29 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Unfortunately, cover art is as unpredictable as other data elements in this field. Take a look at the Note in this Publication that I verified the other day :-\ Ahasuerus 16:32, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
I don't understand that comment. :-/ You added this entry with comments, presumably referring to this pub, which still seems to have a relevant artwork link? BLongley 16:47, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Oh no, as far as I can tell, the image associated with the first printing of the 1957 Signet edition ($0.35) is fine. I created a brand new Publication record for the fifth printing ($0.95) and added my comment about the cover art being slightly different. Perhaps we could rephrase the Note field so that it would make more sense? Ahasuerus 16:52, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Please do, as I really don't understand what your complaint is about. :-/ BLongley 16:56, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Sure, let me try again. The problem is that the same cover art was used on the first printing (1957, $0.35) and on the fifth printing (ca. 1970, $0.95) of the Signet edition. However, while the cover of the first printing (currently linked in the database) included a flying saucer in the right corner, that saucer was blotted out on the cover of the fifth printing. I would guess that the editor who worked on the fifth printing decided that by the early 1970s flying saucers had lost their selling power and may make the book look silly, but the publisher didn't want to spend extra money on new cover art, so they compromised. Does it make more sense? Ahasuerus 17:20, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Ah, OK, I thought you were referring to a problem here rather than with the pubs. I've seen worse offences - e.g. look at these two pubs [2] [3]. BLongley 12:45, 31 Jul 2007 (CDT)
They are flying saucers. <cue spooky music>Sometimes you see them and sometimes you don't.</cue> :-) Actually, the original Ahasuerus comment seemed clear enough to me but I was not sure which saucer had been removed.
That earlier comment about "is" vs. "Is" got my attention. I personally use "is" and using the search box on the left (not advanced search) to look for titles containing (space)is(space) finds that "is" and "Is" are both well represented with 56 instances of "Is" and and 48 for "is" in the page of results. FWIW - some style guides ask that sub-titles be all lower-case though I normally do not follow that convention. Marc Kupper (talk) 23:43, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Thankfully, if at some point we decide to change our case convention re: "is", it will be a matter of writing a very simple script, so there is nothing to worry about :) Ahasuerus 01:59, 31 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Don't be TOO sure: a "simple" script can't cope with "Titles should have case regularized unless there is some specific evidence that the author intended certain letters to be in a specific case". We probably won't get caught out on " is " but someone might write "There IS some justice!" or "There IS such a thing as a free lunch!" at some point. The biggest risk is that the script-writer forgets to update some other tables - I'm already seeing a lot of "normal" edits through the proper UI leaving stray titles around, it seems easy to forget reviews and cover-art and awards for instance. :-/ BLongley 13:56, 2 Aug 2007 (CDT)
Oh, and I'd prefer "is" to "Is" myself. Time to join another minor rebellion, I think! ;-) BLongley 13:56, 2 Aug 2007 (CDT)

(unindent)Well, if the number of "problem" titles is under a couple of hundred, then our hypothetical script would first create a list of changes for a human to review, at which point any abnormalities should be relatively easy to identify. As far as not updating some related table goes, that's always a concern, but hopefully Al would be one of the reviewers.

Policy wise, there are quite a few words that should be arguably de-capitalized, e.g. "with". It should also be noted that we are not the only ones struggling with these issues, bibliographers have been arguing about capitalization for decades. Do we lose data when we capitalize most words and thus obliterate the distinction between proper nouns and common nouns? If a book was published as "The Last Star Ship" and then again as "The last star ship", did it really have two separate titles? Etc. Our current rules amount to a somewhat arbitrarily drawn line in the sand. Ahasuerus 14:53, 2 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Changing publication contents

ISFDB has one big "gotcha" that's documented at Help:Screen:EditPub#General_contents. In this case you wanted to update Crossroads in Time. The addition of page numbers and dates is fine but you also wanted to change the name of the story Derm Fool to "Derm Fool". If you look at the title record for Derm Fool you will see that it's referenced by seven publications including two that are verified. If we changed the title to "Derm Fool" we'd end up changing the name of that story in all sever publications.

What I did was to

  • approve your update
  • edit the publication to change the title back to Derm Fool
  • Add a new title to the publication called "Derm Fool"
  • Using "Remove Titles From This Pub" I deleted Derm Fool from Crossroads in Time.
  • On Theodore_Sturgeon's page I saw that "Derm Fool" was listed twice - oddly "Dup Candidates" did not find these and so I used advanced search to find and merge these so that we have one record for "Derm Fool".
  • Finally, I made "Derm Fool" a variant title of Derm Fool.

I appreciate you taking the time to educate me on the right way to do things and cleaning up the confusion I caused. I think I knew about this but confused myself because I saw the duplicate names and promptly forgot what I think one of the other moderators told me. To recap, what I should have done was add the new title with the name as in my volume. Then in a separate step remove the original entry. Then to link it all together, make one a variant of the other. I'll need to go look at the instructions on that one. Thanks again.
Now I'm going to go look at the instructions on author names and figure out how to link up the two works by Norbert Wiener aka W. Norbert. Any hints on this will be appreciated.TFRANK 02:01, 2 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Angels and Spaceships

Hi, your submission Star Shine is this a variant title of Angels and Spaceships? Also the publication Star Shine appears to be already listed [4], except the author is F. Brown. Thanks :-)Kraang 20:20, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Yes, I was planning to make this a variant title. I swear I searched the title and didn't get a hit. Must have fat fingered something. I think the item you found (and that I should have) is likely the same - the page count is different and of course the author name. This also seems to be the only reference for F. Brown. What would you like me to do here?TFRANK 21:43, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
I've approved it , now to make it a variant you have to bring up the Angels and Spaceships title than in the edit tool box click on the "Unmerge Title". Check the box for Star Shine and hit the submit key. This will creat a new title record for Star Shine. After approval bring up the Star Shine title and click on "Make this title a variant title or pseudonymous work", in the parent # box put in the parent Title # of Angels and Spaceships (38039)in this case, but have a look yourself so you know in the future. Then hit the submit button right below the parent # box. Do not use the submit at the very bottom of the page this will make the title a variant of itself.Kraang 22:14, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
I deleted the erroneous F. Brown and duplicate Star ShineKraang 22:29, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
I've done the unmerge. After it is okayed I will make it a variant. I still don't seem to have this down right. I understand about cloning from the same title to a different edition but either this clone, unmerge, variant series of steps is the (hard) way to do it or there must be a method I haven't come across yet, particularly for a collection.TFRANK 22:47, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
For collections this is the best way. By cloning the other title all the short stories are automatically merged. If you entered it as a new collection with the contents you would then have to merge all the short stories. This way there are less steps.Kraang 22:56, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
OK, so my initial approach was right. I likely would have missed the unmerge step. So is there some way to add comments about the entry for the moderator by way of explaining what the editor's intention is? Or should I be doing that beforehand by posting something on the moderator page?TFRANK 23:33, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
In the note section you can put in an explanation for the moderator about your intensions. Then the extra note can be removed by the moderator or you can do another edit and remove it after everything is finished.Kraang 23:42, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)
I hadn't thought of that - after you say so, it seems obvious. Thanks, I'll try to use it sparingly.TFRANK 23:49, 4 Aug 2007 (CDT)

The Future Now

You verified The Future Now . The reveiw of it in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction magazine Winter 1977 gives a sub-title (The Future Now: Saving Tomorrow), and mentions an essay (title not specified) by Frederic Pohl that apparently preceds and relates to "The Merchants of Venus". No such essay appears in the current contents list. Perhaps you could check these two details when convenient? -DES Talk 15:53, 28 Jan 2008 (CST)
