Welcome!

Hello, Shsilver, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Ahasuerus 12:14, 7 Feb 2007 (CST)

Helix submission

From our Policy page:. "Web only publications such as webzines. The problem for us is that they are not durable; anything we index could change, be reorganized, edited, updated with new versions or revisions, and so on. In addition, the URLs are not likely to be durable. So for now web only publications are not accepted into the ISFDB." Which, unfortunately, is true of Helix. Sorry. Hopefully you will find this response; you can reply on this page.--swfritter 21:59, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

I guess you haven't found the wiki. I am regretfully rejecting your submission for the reasons above. Even if we could form a consensus to add Helix to our database it really wouldn't be possible since it no longer has a web presence.--swfritter 21:04, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Note to other editors. I used email to inform Shsilver of the rejection of his submission. He saw this wiki entry and hopefully will now be able to log on.--swfritter 22:15, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Argentus

I accepted the submission adding this fanzine, but had to make some changes. Any nonfiction piece should be entered as an ESSAY type. The NONFICTION type is reserved for title records of larger works (nonfiction books or collection of nonfiction pieces). Also reviews should be entered in the fields directly below the first set of open fields for contents. You have the chance to enter the book under the review, the author of the book, and the reviewer of the book. I fixed those to reviews but you'll have to go back in and add the authors of the books. Also, it there a publisher listed, is there a price, what is the total page count, is there a cover artist. More importantly does the publication have a date other than 2008. When entering contents that are original to the publication you should leave the date field blank for the contents as the system will automatically date them the same date placed in the pub's header fields. Placing 0000-00-00 into those fields overrides the system and the content records remain undated. Thanks for the contribution. MHHutchins 04:22, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Dates

Your submissions correcting the 0000-00-00 dates aren't working as you're not giving the month and day. These need to be supplied even if unknown - e.g. 2008-00-00. I'll do Argentus en masse for you. BLongley 13:10, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Horrible Beginnings

I approved your update, thanks for the contents! But can you check the spelling of "Stefan R. Diemianowicz" please? BLongley 14:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Helix submission

I think you are able to read this wiki page and I know you got my email. There is a discussion on our Moderator Noticeboard about this issue and a beginning discussion about initials. The ISFDB is a community endeavor and it is important that issues be discussed and there be a consensus about content. I will be sending this to in an email and would like to have your permission to put the contents of my email and your responses on your talk page. Congratulations on the Hugo nomination for Argentus.--swfritter 18:06, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

As I've told you before, the H in my name is not an initial, it is my full middle name. Re-submitted the Helix information on the advice of another editor. I've also provided you with several places to verify the Helix information. Shsilver 18:24, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
All ten issues of Helix are now in there. I might note that one of our primary goals is to document publications from the primary source. Much of our data is from secondary sources but there is always the potential for a print or downloadable publication to be eventually verified from a primary source. That is no longer possible with Helix. The secondary source is also an internet publication (one of my favorites) which has disappeared from the web at times. From a bibliographic standpoint the seven issues of Helix that were initially entered in the database are incomplete in many ways and the ones entered from secondary sources even more so. They can never be fixed. I had hoped to find a methodology for including more webzine publications in our database but I think the abrupt disappearance of Helix will substantially reduce that possibility.--swfritter 18:25, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Series for Errors and Omissions

I have this submission on hold because I was wondering if perhaps the series should be a little less ambiguous - something more than just "2008". Perhaps if I knew what the long term purpose of the series?--swfritter 18:30, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

I have rejected the submission since it's been out there for awhile.--swfritter 13:59, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Argentus, Issue 8

The previous post led me to look at this pub which I think you probably entered. There are various issues involved but I would first like to make sure that you actually entered the issue.--swfritter 18:35, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, he made the submission for that pub. See the comment above. If this is about the missing authors in the book reviews, I'd asked that he revisit this pub. No action so far. MHHutchins 18:53, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Argentus page created

I created the the Argentus wiki page with links to the two fanzines. Still basically under construction but at least now the pubs can be accessed from the wiki.--swfritter 18:58, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

This Way Into the Wendy House

Hello, after verifying my copy of Interzone, I've approved your submission. Please remember that, when you're changing Primary Verified data, our etiquette requires you to notify the PV(s) involved. You were lucky as I'm the sole PV of this issue and I kind of "self-notify" me when I've approved your submission. Note also that the story is given as This Way Into the Wendy House on toc, a fact that I added in the notes. Thanks for finding this error. Hauck 13:27, 21 February 2018 (EST)

Walter Dinjos

A quick googling didn't lead to any results about the death of this author. I've put your submission on hold. Please, could you specify your source? Stonecreek 11:02, 17 December 2018 (EST)

With another submission which had a valid actual link I approveed of your submission. Thank you for it. Stonecreek 04:17, 18 December 2018 (EST)

Noel Streatfeild

I corrected the affected pubs instead of making a variant name. A check of the secondary sources shows it was a database typo. Thanks for finding. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:51, 27 May 2019 (EDT)

Life dates for authors

Hello, I rejected one date of death (1958) for the artist Theo Thomas, since nearly all of his works were published after that year (and much of it seems to have been commissioned). I have put another one for Philip Knobel on hold. Please, do you have a reliable source for the date(s): there is so much hearsay on the internet that we need to know if a source is secure. Thanks in advance, Stonecreek 08:33, 10 July 2019 (EDT)

I rejected the new submission for Thomas. It is really quite impossible that this artist has worked for West German publishers from Latvia after his supposed death in 1958. See the note I added to the artist's summary page. Also, the site you mentioned may also have two artists mixed up, since expressionism's high time was over when 'our' Thomas reached adolescence; afaik there is no city of Döbeln in Latvia, where he is supposed to have died according to the art site. Stonecreek 03:13, 11 July 2019 (EDT)
Well, I couldn't find any detailing source for Knobel's date of death, and rejected the submission without having gained further information. It may well be that you have fallen for an internet hoax again. Stonecreek 07:03, 11 July 2019 (EDT)

Thomas P. Stafford

Thanks for finding the double record! As we have only 1 title under each name, I looked online and he seems to be more popular under Thomas P. Stafford than just Thomas Stafford. Your pseudonym will make the latter his canonical name - while I would think that we want the Thomas P. Stafford name to become the canonical name. What do you think?

In the Shadows of Broadway

You may want to contact StarshipSofa as well because their listing here still says "Mindy In the Shadows of Broadway". Annie 22:08, 8 October 2019 (EDT)

Paul Hugli death date

Hello. Can you provide evidence and/or the source that confirms that 'our' Paul Hugli and the deceased Paul W. Hugli are the same person? Thanks! MagicUnk 13:25, 4 February 2020 (EST)

I've replied over at my talk page. Note that it is best to reply to enquiries posted on your talk page, not over at the talk page of the requester. Thanks! MagicUnk 13:02, 10 February 2020 (EST)

Four Stories Plus

Hello. I've accepted your submission of Four Strories Plus, but I had to make three corrections:

  • You forgot the $-sign. I've added that (I am assuming this collection is priced in USD, yes?)
  • We do not have permission to link to SFSite, so I uploaded a copy instead - you may want to scan the copy you own for a better-quality one (no obligation).
  • Multiple stories in a single publication makes a COLLECTION, not a CHAPBOOK (even though it's just 20 pages)

Final question: what is the exact size of this collection? pb is for 7" × 4.25" (18 cm × 11 cm) or smaller paperbacks. Not sure the dimensions of your collections are larger? Have a look here for details on format. Thanks! MagicUnk 15:46, 5 May 2020 (EDT)

While you are checking the format for MagicUnk, can I bother you to check the spelling of one of the story names: "Boleslaw Szymanski Gets the Ogden Slip" Is the name Boleslaw written with two English l's or is the second one a Polish one (ł). The reprint of the story uses a Polish one so if it is also used here, I can merge them; if a straight English one is used, I can variant. Thanks for checking!
PS: With this number of pages, this may actually fit in as pamphlet (we use that for thin paperbacks which are unbound, staple-bound, or otherwise lightly bound) - then the size won't matter. Thanks in advance. :) Annie 21:01, 6 May 2020 (EDT)

Birthplaces

Please don't forget that we are an international DB so "Carrollton, MS" should have been "Carrollton, Mississippi, USA". Also I am putting on hold all updates with no sources until I can confirm them. If you have the sources handy, this will be very helpful :) Annie 21:49, 2 June 2020 (EDT)

All approved, links and sources found and added. Thanks for submitting these! :) Annie 22:36, 2 June 2020 (EDT)
