Welcome!

Hello, Shrdlu, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 21:32, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

The Distance by Helen Giltrow

I'm holding your submission to add a record of this title to the database. I could not find any speculative element about its contents, appearing to be a spy thriller. Is it science fiction, fantasy or horror (or any other subgenre of speculative fiction)? Mhhutchins 17:04, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Without a response from my inquiry I have no choice but to reject the submission. If you feel this rejection was wrong, please post a message on the ISFDB:Moderator noticeboard. Mhhutchins 07:27, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Grunts

Hi. I accepted your Grunts submission. Might it have an exclamation point, by any chance? I see we have Grunts!. --MartyD 11:43, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

Based upon the title page in the Amazon LookInside I viewed I want you to check the title page of your copy this novel to see whether it says "Grunts!". The title page is leading, even if it says "Grunts" on spine and cover.--Dirk P Broer 06:17, 6 August 2018 (EDT)

Passages

I accepted your submission for "Passages," and have made a small correction. Unknown authors and editors are entered as "uncredited" in lower case, as detailed on the help page for new pubs here. One of the titles "Fanged an Furious" also appears to be missing a letter. Could it be "Fanged an(d) Furious?--Rkihara 23:13, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Please also variant the stories to the french original texts. If they're not in the database, create them. Note that it's likely that nearly all these text are excerpts. Hauck 19:10, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

The ISBN 9780575096380 ...

... for your latest submission (The Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries) seems to be faulty, as it is not valid and the book can't be found at amazon; could you please check it? Also, you didn't provide any publisher, please do state it here. I've put your proposal for this publication on hold while waiting. Thanks, Stonecreek 04:39, 15 September 2017 (EDT)

It seems also possible that this is in fact one of the OMNIBUSes we alread have in the database, please check the spelling on the title page. I'll wait two more days for an answer. Stonecreek 06:43, 16 September 2017 (EDT)
With no answer and no further evidence I rejected your submission. Please do communicate because else it's very hard for us to decide on such problems. Stonecreek 11:15, 20 September 2017 (EDT)

New Tales of Space and Time

Hi, I have rejected your submission for 'New Tales of Space and Time', as there is already a 1952 Weidenfeld & Nicolson edition with price 10/6 in our database: here. You can verify that. P.S.: Do not enter ’NONE’ in the isbn field, as it gives a bad checksum.--Dirk P Broer 15:56, 2 August 2018 (EDT)

I've made the book as by Raymond J. Healey a variant title, and Raymond J. Healey a variant name. Thanks for catching this publisher's error!--Dirk P Broer 06:40, 3 August 2018 (EDT)

To Die a Stranger

Hello,

We normalize titles in English (as described here) so I changed the "A" to "a" in this title. Thanks for adding it. Annie 14:17, 12 November 2019 (EST)

The Best Science Fiction of the Year #6

Hello,

I removed the two final essays from here as per your note. :) Annie 13:18, 22 November 2019 (EST)

Wicked Lovely

Hello,

How is the book you are trying to add here different from the one we have? I do not see anything different. If that is indeed the same edition, you should edit and verify the book we have instead of adding a new one. If there is a difference (later printing?), it needs to be noted in the notes. Annie 14:37, 23 November 2019 (EST)

Same for this one plus a bad checksum :) Or is this one a duplicate copy that you forgot to reject? Annie 14:39, 23 November 2019 (EST)
Same for this submission and this book? Where is the new ISBN coming from? (looks like a typo somewhere?)
And about this one - the notes seem to be the same as for the edition we have. It seems like you did clone, you did not change them. I can approve and remove them but is there anything else that needs updating as well in your record? Thanks!Annie 14:43, 23 November 2019 (EST)
I rejected "Wicked Lovely" (as it is not clear how it is different from the book we have) and "The Armageddon Rag" - the ISBN belongs to the Spanish edition. Can you please clarify which book you have so we can add it properly? Thanks! Annie 02:57, 26 November 2019 (EST)

Lazlo Strangolov's Feather and Bone

How is the author credited on the title page for this one? The copyright page is great for finding the pseudonyms but we record based on the title page :). If it is "Matt Whyman writing as Lazlo Strangolov" then we credit the book as by Lazlo Strangolov. Let me know what is on the title page and I will approve and adjust based on that.

Also - which "Walker Books" is this from? Based on the price, I assume the UK one (which we record as Walker Books (UK) in the DB but just making sure. Thanks! Annie 00:39, 1 December 2019 (EST)

Rubicon Beach

Hello,

I modified the publisher in your verified. We semi-standartize publishers and this one is already in the DB under the longer name. You can add a note in the publication with the exact spelling of the author in the book (and where exactly it is noted). Thanks for the understanding! Please let me know if you have any questions. Annie 23:02, 12 November 2020 (EST)

Appendix N.: The Eldritch Roots of Dungeons & Dragons

I accepted your addition of Appendix N.: The Eldritch Roots of Dungeons & Dragons, but had to make a couple changes:

  • ISBN: I corrected the ISBN to add the missing digit. If the publication actually is missing a digit, please add a pub note.
  • Publisher: I normalized the publisher name to match other entries.
  • Interior Art: We title interior art by the name of the publication.
  • Manly Wade Wellman: I fixed the spelling of Wellman based on the publisher's website. If the publication actually used Welman, please let me know and I will revert and create a new alternate name relationship. However, I assumed this was a database typo.
  • Generic Titles: When there are generic essay titles like "Afterword", we ambiguate them with the book title.
  • Essays: We enter essays as Essay type. Nonfiction is for full length books.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:38, 21 November 2020 (EST)

Can you please double check the story titles? Quite a few don't match the canonical title (not having an leading "The" for example). Are these entered as per the publication? If not, please correct to match the publication. If they are that way in the publication, then we will need to create variants. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:47, 21 November 2020 (EST)
