Welcome!

Hello, Sandmancpp, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!Kraang 04:14, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

The Mote in God's Eye

I have approved the addition of the 2005 SFBC edition of The Mote in God's Eye, but I wonder where the price information ($5.99) comes from? Was it stated in an SFBC catalog, perchance? We generally try to indicate the source of any information that is not explicitly stated in the book, so if you could add that data to Notes, it would be very useful. Again, thanks for contributing! Ahasuerus 03:55, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

I have added a note regarding the purchase price. Thank you for letting me know. Sandmancpp 15:20, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
That price seemed rather low for a 2005 edition, so I checked on the Locus website, who gives the price as $12.99. Do you still have a copy of the catalog giving the price at $5.99 or was that a price for new members? I know they used to discount prices to attract membership back when I was a member (early 70s to early 80s). Thanks. MHHutchins 01:17, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Revolt in 2100

I have rejected the proposed change to the first printing of the 1986 Baen edition of Revolt in 2100 and created a new Publication record for the January 1990 (third) printing using Clone Publication instead. Keep in mind that when you use "Edit Publication", it overwrites the data that we currently have on file, so the best way to add subsequent printings is by cloning older ones. Again, thanks for the submissions! Ahasuerus 04:15, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Anderson's The Time Patrol

I rejected your submission adding a new pub to this title, as there is already a record identical to the one you submitted. It is listed under The Time Patrol title record, while your submission placed it under Time Patrol. I'll check to see if these are the same collections and, if so, I'll make the latter one a variant of the first. Thanks. MHHutchins 19:59, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

These are two different collections with similar titles. So we'll let them remain separate. MHHutchins 20:02, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Phule's Company

Hi, I've put your submission on hold, for now. This is because there is already a verified record with this publication date, but a lower price. Would you mind please checking the copyright page. Is there a number line? If so, what is the smallest number? (I've noticed that Ace sometimes still keeps the first printing date on the copyright page, even if it is a later printing, as per the number line.) Thanks ...clarkmci/--j_clark 06:39, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Hello. I'm not entirely certain if this is what you are looking for, but there is a countdown line of numbers listed as "10 9 8 7 6 5". Thanks ...--Sandmancpp 07:07, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that's the number line.
Since "5" is the lowest number, this usually means that it's the 5th printing.
Sometimes there's also a year line. (For example, a book I'm looking at right now, just published, has 5 4 3 2 1 (number line), then 09 10 11 12 13. This indicates first printing & printed 2009). The highest number in a number line varies - depends how optimistic the publisher is?? I don't think Ace puts a year line as well, so we probably don't know, from the copyright page, what the publication date of your 5th printing is. In this case, put the date as 0000-00-00. I notice that there is already an Ace printing with date 0000-00-00 ("date unknown") & it is the 14th printing (!) & with "cover" price $6.99.
I will fix the record up for you. I'd also like to add a welcome to ISFDB editting. Although the basic stuff is pretty straight forward, there's quite a lot to learn about the "fiddly bits", but don't be afraid to ask. Enjoy! ... clarkmci/--j_clark 00:30, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Worlds That Weren't

Can you re-check the page numbers for this pub? Especially that for "The Last Ride of German Freddie". Thanks. MHHutchins 23:42, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

I did mistype the page number. I typed 25, where it should have been 253. I've corrected it. Thanks. Sandmancpp 17:30, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

End of the Beginning

I added a Cover Artist credit to your verified pub NDFTHBGNNN2006 based on matching the cover artwork to my hardcover edition. - Thanks - Kevin 06:08, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Coraline

I accepted your submission updating this pub, but moved the SFBC catalog number into the notes and left the ISBN in the ISBN/Catalog# field. The field should be used for ISBN unless there isn't one, then use the catalog number. If both are on the pub, the catalog number should be placed in the notes. The number you provided as the ISBN (9780739482004) turns out to be an invalid number. Can you recheck that number? Also, I don't believe that ISBN-13 was used in 2002, so can you also check the date? And is the SFBC logo present on the publication, or is it only credited to HarperCollins? Thanks. MHHutchins 19:55, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

This book was recently purchased from the SFCB. The ISBN on the back of the jacket does not match the number on SFBC's website. I also corrected the price, since the member rate was $8.99 but the published rate shows as $15.99. The book was sold by SFBC but is only published by HarperCollins. I've fixed that as well. Thanks Sandmancpp 00:35, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm holding another update for the same pub. Were you able to determine if the ISBN you submitted [9780739482004] is the same as what's printed in your copy of the pub? Also, this update wants to change the date and price, and remove the book club designation. Sounds like this is an entirely different pub that the one you wish to change. Perhaps it might be best to create a new pub record. MHHutchins 06:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
I was the one that entered the first bit of information with the SFBC publisher and the original price. This was based upon the information found on the SFBC website. I logged back in the SFBC and determined that the price that I had originally listed was a reduced price as a bundle with another book. I was able to find the correct price, when looking just for this book by itself. There are two different ISBN's within this book. 978-0-7394-8200-4 is what appears on the copyright page. The number on the back of the jacket is 978-07394-8200-1. When I try and do a search for the -4 number, I am unable to find any listing. The -1, on the jacket cover, does come up as the correct book. Sandmancpp 00:22, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
I'll go ahead and accept the changes to this pub, but I'll have to create another record for the 2002 SFBC edition. Strange though that you say your copy was purchased from the SFBC, but you've removed that designation from the publisher field. Is there a price printed in the book itself? Is there a catalog number printed on the back of the dustjacket (other than the ISBN)? It doesn't matter if it matches the website's catalog number, the record should show what's printed in the book. For further instructions on how to enter SFBC editions go to this help page. Thanks. MHHutchins 00:31, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Phytosphere

I'm wondering about the purpose of creating another record for what appears to be identical to a verified pub of this title. Is yours a later printing? Thanks. MHHutchins 06:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

This is an error on my part. My duplicate entry can be deleted. Sorry for the inconvenience. Sandmancpp 00:26, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
