Welcome!

Hello, PinneyFowke, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! MagicUnk (talk) 06:05, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

A Dream of Wessex

Hello, and welcome. I've had to reject your submissions [1], [2] as entering cover artist credits is not done by varianting. It is done by editing the actual publication record. I've updated the artist for you - see A Dream of Wessex. If you intend to contribute more to the ISFDB, do read through the information provided in the welcome message above. Also, do not hesitate to head over to the Community Portal or Help Desk to ask for advice. You can reply to this message by clicking on the small 'edit' to the right of this message's title. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 06:17, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

Thank you so much for all your helpful information. With Christopher Priest's A Dream of Wessex, the existing edition is by Faber and Faber with cover by Paul Nash. Bob's cover was for the Pan paperback edition ISBN 0330 25543 6 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PinneyFowke (talkcontribs) .

To Ride Pegasus and other submissions

Same for your other edits - for those that I rejected, I corrected/updated per the information you provided. Again, do read through the material provided in the welcome message. It's a great starting point when editing the ISFDB. Also, don't be discouraged, as it takes some time getting used to editing the database. By the way, if you want to cancel a submission, you can do that by selecting 'My Pending Edits' from the left hand menu. MagicUnk (talk) 06:32, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

The Cave Girl and other submissions on hold

I have your submission on hold as the Tandem publication already exists, but there the art is attributed to Richard Clifton-Dey, and not Bob Fowke. Can you provide additional evidence that the art of The Cave Girl is by Bob Fowke?

The difficulty with this one is that Tandem didn't credit the cover artist. I note that the cover listing currently credits Richard Clifton-Day, and has come from ERB Webzine, so I have contacted them about this. To support Bob's submission, he does have the original artwork, as the agency Young Artists always insisted that the artwork was returned to the artist, and the information I have is from the cover proof. I've tried to insert a photo of it, but it's the wrong size/format, so I need to find out how to do this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PinneyFowke (talkcontribs) .
We'll await the reply from ERB Webzine. Do provide the reply here once you've received it. MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)

Similar questions for all the other submissions I have on hold. Either provide more details about where to get the details of the publications, or better yet, please submit the missing publication records yourself. Thanks! MagicUnk (talk) 11:02, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

With
1) the Brian Earnshaws under edit there doesn't seem to be an option to add in a cover artist
There is. Both of your submissions were correctly done (I've accepted one, and rejected the duplicate). Adding an artist needs to be done by editing the publication record, and providing the cover artist in the field designated for it. One element to remember is to always add a note stating where the information you're adding (or changing) is coming from. I've done that for you. Have a look here: Dragonfall 5 and the Haunted World. You can always submit an update if you would like the text in the notes field to be adjusted. MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
2) With MacDonald Harris Yukiko doesn't appear in his list of titles, so I can't edit it. However, I found it on Amazon Japan after a search on Amazon, and again Bob holds the original artwork, ISBN from the cover proof 0-380-42895-4-225
If a specific publication is not yet in the ISFDB (which is the case for this one), then you can add it yourself by using the Add New Novel menuitem available from the left-hand menu. It is pretty self-explanatory how to enter the data. One thing to keep in mind though: -always- provide the source of the data you're entering in the 'Pub Note' field. That way, users (and moderators) of the ISFDB will know where the information was coming from. Alternatively, and only if you have the actual book available (either owned or borrowed), you can indicate that the information entered is based on an actual copy by primary verifying it. Verifying a publication record can be done by selecting 'Verify This Pub' from the left-hand menu (only available when you have a publication record displayed). MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
3) Heinlein The Man who sold the Moon - I'm having a problem find this, the ISBN I have isn't producing a result Pan 0 330 23831 0 but Bob has the cover proofs, although not the original artwork, as this was sold
As above. If you have a copy of the actual book available then you can enter the information from the book yourself by selecting Add New Novel and checking the 'I own this publication (will be auto-verified as Primary) ' radio button.
If you don't have the copy, but have the information available elsewhere (website, other bibliographical source, ...) you can still submit a new entry+notes on data source. Only difference would be you couldn't primary verify the new record MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
4) Brian Earnshaw's work all states on the back of it that the cover artwork is by Bob Fowke, as well as the original artwork for these, he has the cover proofs, which I could scan to you, I need to learn how to do this.
Give it a try, and update the publication records yourself. I'll keep an eye out for your submissions and will review and approve. :) MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
5) Men and Monsters - Bob has the artwork annotated by his then agent but I haven't been able to find an example online.
I couldn't find a 1978 publication record for Men and Monsters in the DB. Do submit either a new record (or clone an existing publication record and update the information before you submit) - and if you happen to have a copy also primary verify it. Alternatively, update an existing record with notes added. MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
I do hope this helps, I really appreciate your help, and I am learning gradually how to work with this site. I would really like to apply for a Wikipedia entry for Bob, but will have to do a lot more learning, I have been practising in the sandpit.
Many thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PinneyFowke (talkcontribs) .

Some final remarks. When you reply to a message, be it here on your talk page or anywhere else on this wiki, start your reply with one or more ':' to indent the text, and when done, sign with four '~'. Thanks! MagicUnk (talk) 09:03, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
Thank you. With the replies that need scans, I'll do this in a couple of days' time when I've got more spare time to practice. With Roger Eldridge's Magic of the Gloom World, we have a copy of the book, the cover illustration is credited on the inside front flap, but it is incorrectly spelt, in that it states 'Bob Folk'. One wonders who approved the original proof! I used to work in the publishing world in my younger days, for a very august publisher, and we all know it happens. Folk and Fowke are pronounced the same. No idea what can be done about this, the agency returned the original artwork to Bob, and we have it, with his name on the back. Can he verify it in some way? PinneyFowke (talk) 15:30, 22 March 2023 (EDT)
Concerning the incorrectly spelt name, we have a mechanism for that - namely name variants. We record the information as it appears in or on the book. This implies that the art would be recorded as by Bob Folk, and then variant to Bob Fowke afterwards so that the art is correctly attributed. As it turns out, we've already such a case - see here: The Shadow of the Gloom-World. You'll notice it says 'art by Bob Fowke [as by Bob Folk]'. We can do the same for Magic of the Gloom World. Yukiko

Concerning your submission, does the work have any speculative fiction elements in it? If so, which elements classify? If not, since the author is not above the threshold, we do not record it in the SFDB. Regards, MagicUnk (talk) 08:41, 30 March 2023 (EDT)
