Welcome!

Hello, Ofearna, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 00:54, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Curran Points of View

Hi Susan. Concerning this and this submission: are you sure that the title is really written as "Curran's Point of View"? LookInside of the Kindle edition shows "Curran Points of View". Might be prudent to ask Bob to confirm, as he has PV'd the pb edition. Generally speaking, if you're correcting a PV'd publication, you should contact the PV if you don't happen to have a copy yourself to confirm that the proposed update is valid and that there's not something else going on. Thanks! MagicUnk 08:49, 27 January 2021 (EST)

it's several short stories that were included first on the Ilona Andrews website, then in later editions of paperbacks
Curran's Point of View
• Unicorn Lane (Magic Bites)
• Fernando's (Magic Bites)
• Soup (Magic Burns)
• Midnight Games (Magic Strikes)
• Hot Tub (Magic Strikes)
• Kate's Origin (Between Magic Strikes and Magic Bleeds)
• Naked Dinner (Between Magic Strikes and Magic Bleeds)
• Conclave (Magic Bleeds)
• Awake (end of Magic Bleeds)
• Prequel (Magic Breaks)
Jim's Point of View (Magic Breaks) Susan O'Fearna 17:05, 27 January 2021 (EST)
I may not have been entirely clear, I meant to ask how the titles are printed in the publication in question (if you would have it in hand, let me know). Since we are recording as printed on or in the actual book, we can't rely on secondary sources for that (after all, it can differ from publication to publication) - in this case, do ask Bob to confirm how it's written in the book he PV'd. Thanks! MagicUnk 07:22, 28 January 2021 (EST)

Rat Tales

Would you mind double checking the credit for the story on page 39 of Rat Tales? We are currently showing the second author as by his full name (including middle name) with a variant to his 'normal' name. The author is claiming he never used his full name in publication. If you could double check if this is a database error or the author is mistaken, it would be appreciated. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:27, 20 June 2021 (EDT)

I'm moving a ton of books around... when Rat Tales pops back up, I'll check it ! Susan O'Fearna 14:42, 20 June 2021 (EDT)

Malefic

Hi Susan. Can you check the essay on page 7 of Malefic? Is it really credited to "Miguelanx Prado" or is it "Miguelanxo Prado". In any case, it should be varianted to Paisajes con Figura. Thanks, --Willem 15:14, 22 November 2021 (EST)

Affiliate links

I've noticed a couple Amazon affiliate links in notes on this one and this one (though there may be more). As far as I understand, we shouldn't be putting in affiliate links in notes. Please do not do that in the future. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:34, 9 February 2022 (EST)

This one, too. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:41, 9 February 2022 (EST)
Also this one, this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:15, 9 February 2022 (EST)
A few more (most are INTERIORART titles from one art book): here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:07, 9 February 2022 (EST)
It looks like there may be a few different issues here.
First, I don't think these are affiliate links. An affiliate link looks like "https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088CPWBWQ?tag=isfdb-20" where "tag=isfdb-20" tells Amazon who referred the customer to them. The links that Ofearna created don't have a "tag=" component.
Second, as Help:Using Templates and HTML in Note Fields states, we have a special Notes template for linking to Amazon, "ASIN". You can enter {{ASIN|B088CPWBWQ}} in Notes and the software will display the correct matching link automatically. Not only is it easier to enter, but it also ensures that our links to third party Web sites won't become obsolete if and when they change their URL structure -- we'll just need to change the template to reflect the new URLs.
Third, I see that some records like this one say "Available at Amazon". However, if you follow the Amazon link, you'll see that the item is "Currently unavailable". For this reason I would change "Available at Amazon" to something like "See {{ASIN|B088CPWBWQ}} for details". Ahasuerus 16:26, 9 February 2022 (EST)
They did have an older version of affiliate link structure that included "susanofearna" as part of the URL. I've removed it from all of those listed above. I agree about the template use, though, including changing the wording to "See ASIN for details". ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:53, 9 February 2022 (EST)
Ah, I see. Thanks for taking care of them. Ahasuerus 18:32, 9 February 2022 (EST)
I wonder if we should do a query that looks at only the notes field for "susanofearna" so we can make sure all of them are removed? I doubt Ofearna would remember all of the ones that got entered. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:54, 9 February 2022 (EST)
Looks like I can answer my own question: This search found 32 additional entries. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:55, 9 February 2022 (EST)
Let's use the ASIN template when fixing these, please? :) Annie 19:11, 9 February 2022 (EST)

Everdark Cursed

Hello,

I had to reject this one - books more than 90 days in the future are not eligible to be added per our ROA (and any time we make an exception, we end up spending a lot of time updating the book because schedules change and things get shifted, renamed, change covers and what's not). Additionally, a primary verification means you have the book so even if you decide to add in a few months when it is closer to the date, please do not verify until you actually GET the book :)

PS: Hope you are feeling somewhat better! Annie 21:34, 17 February 2022 (EST)

I did pre-order it and I have the ARC, but OK... we'll wait :-) - you can read the user page here to see latest update on local medical establishment trying to KILL me Susan O'Fearna 21:48, 17 February 2022 (EST)
Well... if you verify from an ARC, that needs to be mentioned in the notes because books change between ARCs and actual publications. And even with an Arc, the 90 days rule apply - ARC is not a publication under our standards technically :)
That's why I said that I hope you are feeling better - I saw your notes there :) Annie 22:05, 17 February 2022 (EST)
When it is closet to release my pre-order will send me a notification; I'll wait till then to add it (again) Susan O'Fearna 22:09, 17 February 2022 (EST)
If you ping me, I can resurrect this submission as well. I just cannot approve it now. :) Annie 22:10, 17 February 2022 (EST)

Art sources

Just a quick reminder - when importing a cover, always follow up with an edit for the provenance of the art credit. See how I did it here. Thanks! Annie 11:21, 1 March 2022 (EST)

The Breaking of Northwall

Hi. I approved the artist update but the note[2] confused me a bit. I found the artists name on the back of the hc on Amazon, so no problem there. Let me know about the pubnote issue. Thanks.21:25, 1 March 2022 (EST)

See Annie's note in previous message here on userTalk Susan O'Fearna 21:32, 1 March 2022 (EST)
Which is why Annie said “follow up” and not “don’t forget to also do that in the same edit”. Submit an import followed by a second submission editing the notes to add the source. Or vice versa. :) Annie 21:43, 1 March 2022 (EST)
You can't change anything in the pub when using the import. Just click on the pub in question[3] and use "edit this pub" and edit the note field before or after the import with a short note in the mod field about the change.Kraang 21:45, 1 March 2022 (EST)

Curiosities: The Beast of Bradhurst Avenue, by George S. Schuyler (1934)

You have PVed the 2018 issue of F&SF this appears in, to which I've just added the series "Curiosities (essays)". Hopefully, this should be an utterly uncontroversial edit, but please let me know if you have any objections. Thanks. ErsatzCulture 17:34, 10 March 2022 (EST)

Bell's Beauty and the Steel Beast

Hi Susan -

I'm going to add a disambiguator ("[2]") to the second instance of Julie Bell's "Beauty and the Steel Beast" in this publication. This is how we usually handle multiple instances of artwork with the same title. It will also prevent the software from trying to merge this title with its parent. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 16:54, 19 March 2022 (EDT)

Works for me, I was told to use what was on the title page! Susan O'Fearna 22:45, 21 March 2022 (EDT)
Crossroads Press and Crossroad Press are 2 different publishers. Crossroad started in 2009 according to their site and has published 100's of e-books, while Crossroads published limited editions from 1992 to at least 2002, when their last book on ISFDB appeared. Online searching revealed that the last 3 books under Crossroads actually were by Crossroad; 2 PV'd by you and 1 not (Heart of Glass). So I'm just trying to move those later books to the publisher they belong to. I think if you looked at your copies again they would say Crossroad, not Crossroads. --Username 23:53, 21 March 2022 (EDT)

Elfland cover

My first printing copy of Elfland has a red seal on the cover with "Winner of the RT Book Reviews..." text. I see that you uploaded the cover image which matches other than the seal. (Which is printed, not a physical sticker addition). Thoughts? --Glenn 15:53, 28 March 2022 (EDT)

my copy as the numline showing first mas market paperback and the "sticker" is permanent, not a sticker at all. Was that your question? Susan O'Fearna 00:43, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
No quite. My point is that you uploaded an image without the 'sticker', and I wanted to know if it matched your physical book. --Glenn 01:33, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
It doesn't show an image without the red circle-star... Susan O'Fearna 01:34, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
I may be confused by entering into multiple negatives territory. So ...
Does your book have the red seal on the cover? If so, why did you upload an image without the seal, and PV it without noting the difference? (An attempt at clarity, rather than a complaint). --Glenn 01:40, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
Or perhaps another approach... Would it be ok if I replaced the cover image with one with the red seal/sticker on it? --Glenn 01:45, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
See I'm definately confused b/c the link you have at the top of this post has the red seal and I don't know what you're talking about for an image without... where? Susan O'Fearna 01:57, 29 March 2022 (EDT)
Sorry. Somehow I had accidentally uploaded my image before talking with you. But I didn't clear my browser cache, so it was showing your old seal-less image. Your responses quite confused me, as we were talking about two different images. If you go to image page, you'll see that your original upload didn't have the seal. So my assumption now is that it's ok that I leave the image as is. --Glenn 02:38, 29 March 2022 (EDT)

Theme of Absence

Hi. We got a question from someone who has work published by Theme of Absence, and that led me to your verified Theme of Absence entry. It's recorded as a MAGAZINE but isn't quite set up the way a magazine record should be. It looks like your record corresponds to what is on their archive as the December 2020 "edition". What form does your verified copy take? Do you have some sort of downloadable e-book, or is it just the website itself? I'm thinking we should change your record to be "Theme of Absence, December 2020" and get it into a Theme of Absence series. Let me know what you think. Thanks, --MartyD 08:06, 21 April 2022 (EDT)

Ok, thanks. I made the changes here for your re-verifying pleasure. I switched the format from ebook to webzine, but if you have it in downloaded e-book form, I will change it back. Thanks --MartyD 12:03, 23 April 2022 (EDT)

Nevermore

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?577429; I imported contents to the TP edition because there's a copy on Archive.org and added the Morrell bonus story mentioned in the note here; I also discovered 1 title (by Uwe Sommerlad) and 3 names (Weekes, Rhoads, and Petersen) were entered incorrectly, so I fixed those. --Username 07:55, 28 April 2022 (EDT)

Collins Collection

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?271912; Did some edits for Knuckles and Tales; it's Knuckles & Tales on title page in 2002 CD edition, but what does your PV 2003 edition say? Also, "The Worst Thing There Is" is really titled "The Worst Thing in the World" according to online info. --Username 11:50, 8 May 2022 (EDT)

nope, title page uses AND not &, ToC has "The Worst Thing There is" and page 219 says same thing, and copyright page says the story is original to this collection Susan O'Fearna 22:54, 10 May 2022 (EDT)
Thanks. Oh boy, this is going to be a mess; I supplied a photo in 1 of my edits showing title page of CD edition which clearly has & in the title, and story title was changed to "The Worst Thing in the World" later on as can be seen in the readable preview on Google Books of e-book. Also, Introduction was titled "I'm Gonna Send You Back to Arkansaw" in all editions, apparently, but was just titled "Introduction" on ISFDB, so I made an edit for that, too. Most of my other edits were just fixing dates of original stories to include the month. So after my edits are approved some unmerging/variants will be needed. --Username 23:26, 10 May 2022 (EDT)
sounds like fun -- now I have a yen read some stories! just have to stay awake as long as I can - surgery really took it out of me (stupid doctors) Susan O'Fearna 23:36, 10 May 2022 (EDT)
Username, The related edits are still in the submission queue. In light of Susan's answer, looks like you should withdraw them. Are you planning on identifying which publications use '&' in the title? John Scifibones 22:35, 16 May 2022 (EDT)
Well, I'll try to recall; there's a link to a photo in one of the edits (mentioned above) which shows the CD edition's title page, which has &, but your friend said her PV edition doesn't. Assuming she's correct, since she didn't provide a photo, some sort of variant would be needed, something I rarely do because I was never good at it. Honestly, I've forgotten most of this, it's been so long. Plus, there's that changed story title mentioned above, so it's all messy and hard to conflate without having all editions physically in front of me at the same time, which of course I don't have. So I don't know what to say; you want to take this, go ahead. If not, just reject them. I did have some edits accepted recently which fixed some dates and other stuff, so at least it's better than it was before. I return to books I've worked on before on a regular basis, so it will all be improved further down the road, anyway, assuming I'm stil here. --Username 23:14, 16 May 2022 (EDT)

Otherwere anthology: R. A. Salvatore's The Coach (with|had) Big Teeth

Hi, you're the sole verifier for this anthology. If possible, could you double check the title of the R. A. Salvatore story? This anthology has an entry for The Coach had Big Teeth, but he also has a suspiciously similar sounding story The Coach with Big Teeth published in a later anthology.

Wikipedia thinks they are the same story, titled "...with...", and Goodreads also has the "...with..." title for the Otherwere anthology. Thanks! ErsatzCulture 17:34, 3 June 2022 (EDT)

Belated edit: I just noticed the Amazon UK preview for the later anthology includes the copyright page, and that story is listed with a 1996 date, further implying it is the same story, even if the titles are slightly different. (There's no preview for the Otherwere anthology unfortunately.) ErsatzCulture 17:38, 3 June 2022 (EDT)

yup, you're correct - WITH not Had, good catch Susan O'Fearna 21:29, 3 June 2022 (EDT)

Also, you seem to have PV other Jim Warren art books, so I noticed Nosfaratu, which should probably be Nosferatu, and MagicatsII which should probably be Magicats II.
