A Man They Didn't Know

Hello, as there are a lot of David Hardy(s) in the db and as entered the author of this text may be pseudonymistically linked to the artist, perhaps should it be dismabiguated to another David Hardy if you can have some evidence. Hauck 10:13, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

This one seems to be a third one. The bio doesn't match the two already in the system. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:04, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, welcome to a fourth David Hardy... Hauck 15:09, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

(Atlas) cubed

I interpreted your comment about (Atlas)^3 and "(Atlas) cubed" to mean you wanted (Atlas)³. So I changed the title to that, using ³. It's also Unicode 00B3. If that's not what you meant, let me know. --MartyD 01:40, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Nope, that's exactly right. Thanks. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:29, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Ghost in the Shell original info

Hi -- Would you be able to add the original publication info for the anthology Ghost in the Shell? The copyright page says the Japanese title was "Koukaku Kidoutai Shousetsu Ansoroji". Also, the lengths of the stories if you can find them out.

(Do you mind being asked to do these sorts of things? And is there another editor specializing in Japanese books who I can pass some of them on to?) --Vasha 00:59, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

Can you snap a pic of the copyright page and post it here? That may help. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:50, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
Nevermind. I think I found it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:51, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

CreateSpace

I may be telling you something you already know... but according to discussions here and here, CreateSpace isn't a publisher, but rather a printing and production service (a subsidiary of Amazon, which is probably why they insist on naming it in the "publisher" space on their pages). So we don't list it as a publisher here, instead leaving a blank space (currently -- even though the help says to put the author name; I believe that the help will be updated, but -- as with every other discussion! -- the discussion is still ongoing.) Therefore, I'd like to change all of your verified publications that list CreateSpace -- Rise of the Phoenix, and maybe others I haven't found yet. Thanks! --Vasha 18:06, 23 June 2017 (EDT)

Yes, I'm aware of that, but back when those were entered, many people here were listing it as a publisher. So I followed suit. I'll do it when I get around to it. Thanks. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:54, 23 June 2017 (EDT)
Also, I'm not aware of an easy way to find them. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:35, 24 June 2017 (EDT)
Advanced search to the rescue as always - search for publications with your name as a Primary Verifier and publisher as CreateSpace. You do not seem to have any left though (I did try with another publisher(Tor) and it found them so the query is working). Or any other weird spelling of the publisher name. Annie 15:31, 24 June 2017 (EDT)
Like I said, I generally don't use them as a publisher. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:04, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

Decision Points / The War of Gifts

Can you look at your copy of Decision Points to see if the last story is titled "A War of Gifts" or "The War of Gifts"? Amazon's Look Inside has the table of contents which has "The War of Gifts" which is the title you verified. I'm wondering if "The War of Gifts" is the the same story as "A War of Gifts" from 2007. You might find a clue on page 355 which has the copyright acknowledgements.

Amazon has a Look Inside of A War of Gifts here. The Look Inside does not include the full story. It ends with

"Merry Christmas," Dink mouthed silently.
Wiggin smiled.

This Amazon review of Decision Points says "It ends with a tale by Orson Scott Card: “A War of Gifts.” Aptly named. This is a reprint but I’d never read it and it showed all the brilliant interpersonal psychology of the best parts of the Ender universe."

Thank you. --Marc Kupper|talk 04:15, 26 June 2017 (EDT)

It is "The War of Gifts". The copyright notice states:
"The War of Gifts (An Ender Story)" © 2007 Orson Scott Card. First published in A War of Gifts, novella hardback, by Tor Books. This is its first anthology appearance, and the first in a form slightly abridged by the author.
So, it's the same story, only abridged. The "(An Ender Story)" is used as a subtitle, and I've submitted a correction to the story title. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:12, 26 June 2017 (EDT)
Thank you. I added a pub-note plus title notes about this so that people researching the Enderverse will know why there are two similarly named stories. --Marc Kupper|talk 15:07, 26 June 2017 (EDT)

Can you check the family name of Togakkai Arufa again? If it indeed needs to be the complete name, can we add an author note explaining that this is indeed his family name (so someone does not decide to "fix" it at a later date? Thanks! Annie 16:16, 8 July 2017 (EDT)

Omnibus vs collection

無責任艦長タイラー【スーパー・デラックス版】1 is actually an omnibus, not a collection - it contains at least 2 separate novels which makes it automatically an omnibus. I changed the type but did not add anything in the content field - not sure how those novels are connected if at all. Annie 22:49, 8 July 2017 (EDT)

Same for this one Annie 22:51, 8 July 2017 (EDT)
They are connected as they are all in the same meta-series. I'm not sure how to list them with the "O/1,2,3" thing since (for example) the first one has one novel from one series and two from another. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:13, 9 July 2017 (EDT)

Japanese serials

Awards dates

Hello,

I accepted this addition but changed the year back to just 2017 -- see my notes in the Community Forum. The field needs to only have the year, not just the date or month. Otherwise, it does not show up in the yearly list. The field is called "year" as well - not date :) Annie 16:19, 20 July 2017 (EDT)

Same here. Annie 16:19, 20 July 2017 (EDT)
Then it should just ask for a year and tack on the "-00-00" automatically. :) ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:43, 20 July 2017 (EDT)
I do not disagree with you. :) But it does not - so the editors need to be careful. You can even just type 2017 by the way - and it WILL add the 00-00 :) Annie 16:46, 20 July 2017 (EDT)

ショック・ウェーヴ (Part 1 of 2)

The Ghost in the Shell: Five New Short Stories

I have the English US edition of this, which does not specifically credit an editor but includes the name "Shirow Masamune" in the copyright list of authors on the copyright page. Masamune is not a contributing writer, so I suspect he is the editor. The Japanese edition also contains an extra essay not in the English edition. Do you have access to a source that can establish this one way or the other? Thanks in advance. :) PeteYoung 13:23, 18 August 2017 (EDT)

I have no source showing an editor. Amazon.co.jp doesn't have a Look Inside for this book, so I can't see it that way, either. Shirow created the series, which is why he's credited in the copyright page. He's listed on the cover of the Japanese edition as the creator. After reviewing a few sources, I determined I misread one of them and have therefore removed the essay. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:32, 18 August 2017 (EDT)

Biogenesis

Hi Joe, want another small project? I've added all details for the English language edition of the Tatsuaki Ishiguro collection Biogenesis, which currently has no information about the stories in the original Japanese. However the copyright page does have details with anglicised titles as follows, which you may be able to use to provide the titles in Japanese from which you could then variant the English titles:

 • "It Is with the Deepest Sincerity That I Offer Prayers..." originally published in Japanese as "Heisei sannen gogatsu futsuka, kotensei meneki fuzen shokogun nite kyusei sareta Akedara Nobuhiko hakushi, narabini", by Fukutake Shoten, 1994, and republished as "Shinka" in Shinka by Haruki Bunko, 2000.
 • "Snow Woman" originally published in Japanese as "Yuki Onna" in Hitokuibyo by Haruki Bunko, 2000.
 • "Midwinter Weed" and "The Hope Shore Sea Squirt" originally published in Japanese as "Tojiso" and "Kibo Hoya" in Tojiso by Hayakawa Shobo, 2006.

Some more author details would also be good... all I can find about him is his birth date, so you'd probably have more success in Japanese. Cheers. PeteYoung 15:41, 23 August 2017 (EDT)

Library of Souls cover artist

Hi I noticed you verified Library of Souls http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?529431. I think the cover artist isn't really John Van Noate, I think he's the owner/collector/source of the photo; the list of photographs on page 463 lists Page, Title, and "From the Collection of" with quite a few entries for Van Noate in the latter column, and googling him https://www.flickr.com/people/82329524@N00/ he looks to be a collector, not a photographer. I just entered a different printing, and put Doogie Horner ("Cover design by") for cover artist, since he's already got an entry. Anyway. gzuckier 22:02, 11 September 2017 (EDT)

Yasutaka Tsutsui

The database contains two collections of English translations of stories by Yasutaka Tsutsui: Salmonella Men on Planet Porno and Bullseye! Yesterday I found the titles of the original stories online and added them. Could you take a look at that and make sure it's all OK? I took the transliterations from Google Translate so presumably they aren't 100% right.

Also, if you have time, could you find the original publication dates for the stories? According to the translator, a lot of them came from a collection titled おれに関する噂. Thanks very much! --Vasha 12:15, 24 September 2017 (EDT)

Edgedancer

I added the "Prologue" for Edgedancer to the contents. The version of "Edgedancer" in Arcanum Unbounded does not include the "Prologue", which occupies about 50 pages in the separate volume. I don't think it's necessary to change the pub from CHAPBOOK to COLLECTION, because it's still one story. But should the CHAPBOOK be made part 2.5 of the "Stormlight Archive" instead of the SHORTFICTION? Bob 11:33, 22 November 2017 (EST)

Chapbooks can't be part of a series, so that wouldn't work. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 11:41, 22 November 2017 (EST)
O.K., but then maybe the solution is to remove the "Prologue" as a separate story and make the "Edgedancer" that appears in the Arcanum Unbounded "Edgedancer (abbreviated)" or some such to distinguish it from the full-length version, with notes to explain the difference. Bob 16:27, 22 November 2017 (EST)

David Grinnell (Donald A. Wollheim)

Hi, the working language of David Grinnell (Donald A. Wollheim) remains English, even when his name is written as ディヴィッド・グリンネル. To make it easier for native Japanese fans to look for the athor the family name is given as Gurinneru instead of Grinell. At least I was told some months ago that that is the way we do it. You may have heard/read otherwise, but that is how I treat all translations into the Japanese, author-wise.--Dirk P Broer 19:27, 16 January 2018 (EST)

That's what the hiragana is for (and the katakana in his name). Native Japanese speakers will likely search using one of those, and those are both in the listing now. The working language of David Grinnell is indeed English, but anything that appears under ディヴィッド・グリンネル is going to be Japanese. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:29, 16 January 2018 (EST)
I've held that same position -translated authors having their local psuedonym under that language- but I was told then to give e.g. all Asimov's pseudonyms the working language 'English'. I'll look in the archive for the discussion.--Dirk P Broer 19:40, 16 January 2018 (EST)
this wiki page about author data states that the Directory Entry (new name for Family name) needs to be the Latin transliteration of the family name (so 'Gurinneru' instead of 'Grinell') for working languiage it states "Working Language - The Working Language field is populated using a drop-down box which lists all languages supported by ISFDB. It defaults to your user-specific language value, which is usually English unless you have changed it in your User Preferences. Make sure to change the value if the author's primary language is not the same as your default language."--Dirk P Broer 19:58, 16 January 2018 (EST)
Dirk's understanding matches mine. It doesn't really matter for names written in hiragana because all hiragana names are associated with works written in Japanese. However, it becomes important when the same alphabet/script is used by multiple languages. For example, Robert Heinlein is "Роберт Хайнлайн" in Belorussian and Russian. Udon Entertainment Japanese art portfolios

Thanks for your input into this discussion. I was initially going to post my query here to your talk page about those two volumes and given my query (and response) to Hauck I posted it to a wider audience.

The two volumes in question are: this and this

However since both these volumes have credits in english and japanese and neither author is listed I thought I'd ask you how exactly to enter these titles - although I can find chinese characters by using the Character Map in Windows I didn't want to enter completely bogus data plus the fact the print size in the book is rather small.

Any guidance you could provide in this respect would be appreciated. --Mavmaramis 05:05, 10 February 2018 (EST)

Yes I own both of those books and a copy of this which has number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 - not sure is that means a 1st or 2nd printing - mine has a silver band stuck to the bottom of the paper wrapper. I may end up not adding them at all since they are graphic in nature and may well end up being rejected for that reason but thanks for your input either way. --Mavmaramis 13:19, 8 March 2018 (EST)
Art books/portfolios are acceptable to add. The numberline above indicates a first printing. You go with the lowest number in the numberline. Yoko Tawada

A couple of questions about this Japanese-German writer. Would you happen to know the original title of The Emissary? It says that the English version of the novel was translated by Margaret Mitsutani, whose specialty is Japanese literature, so my guess is that it was originally written in Japanese.

Also, if her working language is listed as Japanese, do you think we should change her canonical name to 多和田葉子? Conversely, if we keep the current canonical name, Yoko Tawada, should we change the working language to German? Ahasuerus 19:58, 5 March 2018 (EST)

Some new Japanese authors and stories to add info for

I just entered a collection of early-20th-century Japanese horror stories (Kaiki) and there are three by authors who aren't already in the database. (I hope they aren't nongenre stories; the small amount of description I have been able to find sounds at least borderline genre.)
