Welcome!

Hello, Mjcrossuk, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

Beyond the Outposts: Essays on SF and Fantasy 1955-1996

Hello,

I approved that but had to make a few changes:

  • We have the publisher as Ansible Editions so I changed it to that. If you think that AnsibleEditions is a better choice for the publisher, we can discuss changing the name on the publisher level:)
  • I had to pull the imag out from the image field as we have no permission to link to ansible. The list of allowed site is here or you can upload it to our DB (see above for instructions)
  • Introduction (to Beyond the Outposts: Essays on SF and Fantasy 1955-1996) -> Introduction (Beyond the Outposts: Essays on SF and Fantasy 1955-1996) per our policy for naming essay called Introduction and other common names. IF the "to" is printed in the book, let me know and I will replace it back
  • Added (Beyond the Outposts: Essays on SF and Fantasy 1955-1996) to the 4 essays at the bottom (common names so they need the name of the book.
Merged all the essays we already have in the DB with the same titles. You may want to check for the ones that are not merged yet and if we have another version of them, we can variant them. For the ones that we do not have, a note inside of each on where the original is published will be a good idea.

On your questions:

  • We do not allow html in titles. You can descrive these in the notes but the titles themselves should not be modified to show these. The relevant section from the help page is:
  • Fonts. Sometimes a title will have one or more words in italics, or in boldface, or in an unusual font. The ISFDB software would permit representing these via embedded HTML. However, this would mean that user searches that did not include the HTML would fail in many cases where they ought to succeed. Therefore, do not use embedded HTML to show font changes. For the same reason, do not use underscores to show _italics_, nor asterisks to show *boldface*, nor other typographical methods to show font in titles. If the font seems important, it can be shown and/or described in a note.
The On Writing columns date spans 1977-1979 - how do I reflect that?
Put the date as 1977, and then explain the contents in the publication note AND in the note of the title. You can also add each of the individual parts into the book (then we can connect to their existing copies if we have them)
Alos Short Takes spans 1979-1981.
Same as above
Paradise Charted was published in Fall, 1980 - how do I enter that?
Date: 1980-00-00; Note on the title level that it was Fall 1980 and where it was.
Also, Tom Reamy... was Summer, 1981,
Same as above
Pop Lit Reviews span 1986-1990
Same with the other 2 spans :)
A note on dating - even if an essay is written earlier, if it is published under a new title, the record for the title takes its date from the first publication under this title. Its parent record (the first publication) retains the original date.

The result is here. If you have any questions and/or concerns or I can provide more clarifications, let me know. Thanks for adding the book! Annie 04:42, 6 June 2020 (EDT)

Hi Annie,
Thanks for processing & fixing my submission.
Publisher: that was my typo, it is 2 separate words
Cover Image: I've uploaded the one from the publisher web site
Introduction etc: The 'to' was my addition so what's up now is correct
Common names: I sort-of knew that but was slightly losing the will to live by the time I got to those; I just wanted to submit it (& hope that my session didn't timeout before I did so), knowing that some additions would be necessary later
Fonts: Sorry, I should have read the help pages more thoroughly
Titles that are collections of other titles: I'll do what you suggest
Seasonal dates: I'll do as you suggest
There are other vt to add in, as shown in the Original Appearances section of the publisher's site at [1]; I'll do those --Mjcrossuk 06:21, 6 June 2020 (EDT)
No worries for the help page - things can get overwhelming if you do not edit often. I suspected that we will have a lot of variants - that’s why I posted the dating explanation. Do let me know if I can assist with anything else. Annie 07:02, 6 June 2020 (EDT)
I've just noticed that 3 of the titles with Common Names (Some Notes, Acknowledgements, Original Appearances) are listed on the Copyright page as 'copyright David Langford', so I guess they should be credited to him, rather than to 'uncredited'?
I've also just discovered that there is a spinoff from the Beyond The Outpost book: A Budrys Miscellany: Occasional Writing 1954-2000, a free ebook-only available from [2]. I'll get to that one after finishing off Beyond The Outposts. --Mjcrossuk 12:56, 6 June 2020 (EDT)

Credit for cover art, here Beyond the Outposts

Hi, you gave Camille Flammarion as cover artist for this publication. However, it is only mentioned that it was taken from "L'atmosphère: météorologie populaire". That doesn't make Flammarion the artist, and that's the person who we do credit. Other pub.s - reproducing the same work of art - mention that the artist is actually unknown. If that is so, the credit should be removed. Stonecreek 06:21, 8 June 2020 (EDT)

Hi, Sorry about that, I've submitted a change. Thanks for the correction --Mjcrossuk 06:32, 8 June 2020 (EDT)
