In the Afterword to [https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?97231 In War Times] Goonan says that her father, Thomas E. Goonan, wrote the sections of the book that appear as Sam's narratives.  These make up a significant portion of the book.  She also credits him in the Acknowledgments.  As PV, do you think that he should be given co-author credit?  Just mentioned in the notes?[[User:SFJuggler|Jim]] ([[User talk:SFJuggler|talk]]) 18:54, 19 November 2022 (EST)

PREFERENCES FOR NOTIFICATION OF CHANGES TO PRIMARY VERIFIED RECORDS
  • I will no longer be responding to messages posted on this talk page. For urgent matters and other important issues concerning my verified records, I will respond to emails sent through the ISFDB. Click on this link.

  • If you've come here to inform me that you wish to make a submission to add a COVER IMAGE or NOTES to any of my primary verified records, notification is not necessary. Just do it.

  • If you've come here to inform me that you wish to either 1) add a publication series to a primary verified publication record, or 2) add the stated price for Canada or other countries to the publication record, notification is not necessary. Just do it.

  • If you've come here to inform me that you wish to make a submission that would change any major field of a publication record for which I am the only primary verifier, please use the ISFDB email system. Otherwise, contact any other primary verifier or post a message on the Moderator noticeboard.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents Stories To Be Read with the Door Locked

I guess you're leaving the site, if so, good luck on your further endeavors. Anyway, I added an image and some notes to this book. Again, good luck. MLB 08:38, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Question about "The Mysterious Stranger"

In an anthology you verified, The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories, there's a story called "The Mysterious Stranger" which has the date in the database of 1823. Now, the editor of Dracula's Precursors says that this story was "originally published in German in 1823 and translated into English soon after" and Michael Sims, editor of Dracula's Guest, says it was first published in English in 1860. If this is true, then the story should have the date of 1860 in the database (and should be merged with this record). By the way, according to Douglas A. Anderson, this story is a translation of Karl von Wachsmann's "Der Fremde", whose earliest known publication date is 1844, but that doesn't affect the question of its earliest publication in English.

Anyhow, my point is, could you take a look at Vampire Stories and see if it gives any reason to think this story was published in English earlier than 1860? After I collect replies from other verifiers, I'll either merge these records or not. Thanks! --Vasha 18:54, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Vasha, you should read the note at the top of this page. Mike does not look here anymore. Chavey 23:59, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

2020 Vision (1980 edition)

Changes: Made page numbers consistently be for the introductions to the stories rather than the start of the stories, and added a note about that; capitalization fix and moving external identifiers. --Vasha 12:54, 4 July 2017 (EDT)

Nemonymous Night

A quick note about this submission, which you created on 2019-04-29. The ISBN is already in the database with the same data that the submission would have added. Since the submission has been in the queue for 3 weeks and the data is already on file, I have hard-rejected it. Ahasuerus 14:03, 19 May 2019 (EDT)

The system duplicated my single submission (look at the numbers), and I only accepted one. I didn't think it was necessary to go to the moderator queue to see if there were duplicates. Mhhutchins|talk 13:30, 20 May 2019 (EDT)
I see. Thanks for the explanation. Ahasuerus 13:40, 20 May 2019 (EDT)

Coraline

Coraline -- I don't know if this needs to be retitled: Coraline The Graphic Novel or Illustrated version, but it definitely needs to be set as a variant as it was adapted by P. Craig Russell and about 15% of the text has been dropped or changed b/c of the illustrations... Susan O'Fearna 12:23, 19 February 2020 (EST)

Why ask me? I didn't merge it with the novel version, nor have I verified it. Please do as you please with it. Mhhutchins|talk 19:12, 19 February 2020 (EST)

Seeing that you have verified this publication with Tuck, all the data seems to be in order (price, page no, etc.), except the one im holding in my hand is a paperback, not hardcover. This one [1] --Spacecow 19:06, 11 October 2020 (EDT)

"Martyr Without Canon" title type + original publishing info change

Hi. This affects your (and Don Erickson's) verified The Year's Best Horror Stories: XVI. I will leave this same note for Don.

I accepted a submission changing Martyr Without Canon from short story to poem and removing the note about original publication in The Horror Show, Winter 1987. The editor's submission stated the note was in error and that the original publication was in Grue #4 (still 1987).

I did a little research and could not find anything definitive, but Homeville/Locus do list it as a poem in that anthology and cite Grue #4 as the original publication, and I found some secondary review references also describing it as a poem. So I decided to go ahead and accept the change. I also replaced the note about the original publication source in the title record.

If you see this, please check if that's correct (and I apologize if it's not) -- we don't have an active primary verifier. Thanks. --MartyD 12:44, 1 January 2021 (EST)

It's a narrative poem, so it could be considered either a story or poem. I'm fine with its entry as a poem. Mhhutchins|talk 19:44, 12 February 2021 (EST)

Cemetery Dance

I found a 2004 anthology on Fantlab, Quietly Now, which has an interview with Charles L. Grant by Hank Wagner. Cemetery Dance #58, [2], has tributes to Grant by various authors and 1 of them is listed as by Hank Wanger on ISFDB. Is it misspelled inside the magazine, or should it be changed to Wagner? --Username 23:54, 9 February 2021 (EST)

It may take me some time to pull out this issue to confirm the credit. Thanks for your patience. Mhhutchins|talk 22:08, 11 December 2021 (EST)

Freedom Beach

Hi, Note to Moderators from this submisison says For what it's worth, the novel also includes a variation of the short "Faustfeathers" by Kessel. Perhaps that should be included as well. (no idea whether the editor refers to all editions, or a specific one). As you are an active primary verifier, could you have a look and add it if relevant? (I'll leave a note on Dirk & Markwood's talk pages as well) Thanks! MagicUnk 14:08, 1 September 2021 (EDT)

Since an early version of the story appears in the novel, I have no problem with a note about it at the novel's title level. It wouldn't be necessary to note it at the publication level since it probably appears in all publications of the novel. Mhhutchins|talk 02:14, 6 September 2021 (EDT)

Mother Night

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?267431

I was entering a publication and didn't know what to do with Introduction and Editor's Note. Looking through other publications, I see some have included the already created section, Introduction. But no one had made a section out of Editor's Note. When seeing your publication I noticed a curious note: "There is a four-page "Editor's Note" starting on page ix which is an authorial conceit and considered part of the novel which is titled after the note as The Confessions of Howard W. Campbell, Jr..". Did you write that? Is Mother Night supposed to start from the page of the Editor's Note? --Spacecow 03:57, 29 October 2021 (EDT)

I very likely wrote that note, so the "novel" actually starts on the page which the "editor's note" appears. Mhhutchins|talk 02:18, 5 November 2021 (EDT)
Very cool. Thanks. --Spacecow 16:14, 10 November 2021 (EST)

"A Shogun's ?"

"A Shogun's Weapon" entered by you, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?270300, but "A Shogun's Welcome" here, http://www.philsp.com/homeville/fmi/k/k00006.htm#A18, and here, http://darrkenium.blogspot.com/2006/01/some-publications-im-in.html. --Username 14:00, 3 December 2021 (EST)

I entered the title incorrectly and will fix it. Thanks for finding the error. Mhhutchins|talk 19:48, 11 December 2021 (EST)
I already fixed it after discussion with another mod and added a link to the story. I knew it was wrong but just wanted to let you know. --Username 20:13, 11 December 2021 (EST)

Razorblade

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?339851; Since Razorblade was a British company and prices on their back covers list British prices first, should I enter British price as mentioned in your note instead of USA price? I'm trying to make all books by them consistent with regards to price. --Username 12:07, 11 December 2021 (EST)

I entered the price that was given first, as stated in the notes. And since Razorblade was published in Prague, not the UK, I believe I was correct in the way the record was entered. Perhaps it would be a good idea to contact the few other verifiers of other publications from this publisher to confirm that the prices they have given conform to the same pattern as the one in my verified record. Mhhutchins|talk 15:44, 11 December 2021 (EST)
Interesting, because another book by them that I entered the price for recently had the UK price first ([3]); also, the other 2 PV'd books have the British price; yours is the only PV'd book that has the American price. But if you say that's the way it is on your copy then I guess it's so. While it's true they printed the books overseas, all the authors and the owner of Razorblade are from the U.K. --Username 16:16, 11 December 2021 (EST)
Actually, according to the copyright page in my book, it is bound and printed in the UK, but is published in Prague. (Where the authors and owner reside are irrelevant.) Mhhutchins|talk 19:39, 11 December 2021 (EST)
Percolatedstars.jpg
Here's the price printed on the back of my copy of the book. (BTW, you should change your signature so that your username is identified. Thanks.) Mhhutchins|talk 19:45, 11 December 2021 (EST)
OK, but since the currency in Czechoslovakia is the crown and the only prices on the books are British pounds or American dollars and the people involved with publishing and writing all the books seem to be exclusively British it stands to reason that the British price would be the predominant one. I was told by a mod to discuss my change with PV, so that's what I did; if you don't agree with the change, fine. On a side note, the previous message on your board was also by me, and there's 1 other from February, so when you have the time if you could check those and let me know if my changes were correct that would be great. P.S. Brackets around jpeg's prevent them from showing up as giant images. --Username 20:00, 11 December 2021 (EST)
Since the Czech currency wasn't printed on the book, I find your statement to be irrelevant. In the past, it was ISFDB policy to record the first price when two or more are printed on the book. If that policy has changed, please link to the documentation. About the above image, I wanted it to show on this page rather than linking to it.
You still haven't identified yourself, so I have no idea who you are. But I must request that you not make changes on verified records until I've had a chance to respond to them. Again, that used to be ISFDB policy, which may have changed since the time I was active here. Also, please read the statement at the top of this page concerning notifying me of changes to records I have verified. I come here too seldom to respond timely to questions. Otherwise, they may sit here for months. That's why I didn't respond to your February post. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 22:06, 11 December 2021 (EST)

My username IS Username; 8 letters, easy to remember. I've been 1 of the biggest contributors here for almost exactly a year now, which happened to coincide with your long absence. I've had problems with several editors and moderators because I dare to disagree with them, and from our conversations today I only see trouble ahead, so in the future I won't bother you and if I change anything for something PV'd by you I'll just cancel it and move on to something else. Bye. --Username 22:17, 11 December 2021 (EST)

Since you chose for your username to be Username, you've created a problem, because clicking on your "username" doesn't go to your talk page as it should. Things would have gone much more smoothly if you'd simply followed the request at the top of my talk page. If you've had problems with other editors and moderators in your short experience here, you might consider the problem may caused by you instead of them. Thanks for deciding not to attempt any changes in my verified records. That will be great for us both. Mhhutchins|talk 16:06, 12 December 2021 (EST)
Since I've had countless people leave messages on my talk page I doubt anyone's had a problem reaching me if they need to; perhaps the problem is several months ago when 1 of the many disturbed people editing here decided to hack my page with an insulting message, for which they were warned by moderators and told not to do it again, after which a mod locked that section of my page so no one could hack it again. Also, since the title "Shogun's Welcome" was entered incorrectly by you, and very likely the Hank Wagner name I asked you about nearly a year ago, the problem is not that I'm making unnecessary changes to your work but rather fixing it for you. Coincidentally, I did some minor stuff today for a couple of records you worked on, and your editing dates went back nearly 15 years, so it's not like you're a relative newcomer like me. The Razorblade issue is a matter of semantics re: how best to enter prices, but the other stuff were just flat-out mistakes. If you and the many others who complain had entered these things correctly in the first place I wouldn't need to talk to you about them. --Username 17:09, 12 December 2021 (EST)
We all make mistakes. I've made almost 350,000 submissions to this database, each of them containing dozens of entries, and thousands of characters. I have moderated more than a half-million submissions as well. Even if I made 1000 mistakes, it would be infinitesimally small compared to what I've done for this database, along with the thousands of hours that I worked to build it. I will ask you one last time to follow ISFDB standards and not make any submission to change a primary verified record. You should have the courtesy to follow the notification instructions that your fellow editors have asked at the top of their talk pages. (BTW, have you ever actually clicked on your name in the posts you've made in these wiki pages? If you had, you'd quickly discover it doesn't lead to your talk page, as it properly should if you're using a proper username.) Mhhutchins|talk 22:14, 13 December 2021 (EST)
Just a quick note - clicking on one’s name Leads to their user page. It looks weird for Username’s page because another editor posted on it once and the page was deleted as opposed to edited but that has nothing to do with what their name is. The Discussion link up on the top still leads to their Talk page. Annie 23:13, 13 December 2021 (EST)
When I click on your name, Annie, it leads me to your page where I can click on "Discuss this page". I can't do that with the person with the username Username. Try it. In any case, I wish they would just accept my response and move on instead of harassing me because they didn't like how I responded. I don't have time for such nonsense. That's one of the reasons I shut down this page to begin with. At least through email people tend to be more mature. Mhhutchins|talk 00:00, 14 December 2021 (EST)
I did try it - now again to make sure I am not wrong but also repeatedly before that while moderating their submissions. The Discussion link is up at the top albeit looking half-hidden or look so because of how the page looks under it. look on top of the “Editing User:Username” page. There are “user”, “discussion”, “edit” and undelete links. Would not have posted if I had not tried - it is just the way wiki looks under this specific way of page deletion. :) As for the rest - Username had been warned repeatedly about the same thing by pretty much anyone that had ever worked with them. No much effect I am afraid. Anyway - was just trying to assist with the technical side of the issue :) Annie 01:24, 14 December 2021 (EST)
Username.JPG
This is what I get when I click on the name. As you can see there is no option to talk this user, as there is no link to their talk page. Maybe I'm using a different skin than you, so the options are different as well. Mhhutchins|talk 00:48, 15 December 2021 (EST)
The displayed skin looks like "Cologne Blue". I tested it a couple of minutes ago and it looks like it hides a number of standard links on empty User pages. Could you please temporarily change your settings to the default ("MonoBook") skin to see if it fixes the problem? The top row should display the following tabs:
  • User page Discussion Edit Undelete 2 edits Protect (Un)Watch
Ahasuerus
I changed my skin, and the tabs did appear. Even though there's a "Discussion" tab, the link directly to that person's page still prompts me to the edit page. Perhaps the bug for my preferred skin can be fixed, since I don't expect that person to change their username to something less generic. Mhhutchins|talk 21:18, 13 January 2022 (EST)

The Fantasy Hall of Fame

Would you mind double checking The Fantasy Hall of Fame? Per the Internet Archive scan of this printing:

  • Page 296, the title is "The Silken Swift" and not "The Silken-Swift"

Corrected. Thanks! Mhhutchins|talk 21:09, 13 January 2022 (EST)

Gwendy's Button Box - subseries of Castle Rock?

Hi, you're a PV on this, I have a question - there's an upcoming book which in the UK at least is promoted as the third in a trilogy (see also Goodreads). Do you have any objection to making this the first part of a new "Gwendy's Button Box" series, and making that a subseries of the current "Castle Rock" series?

I haven't read any King for about ~30 years, and have only the vaguest awareness of how his works inter-relate, so I'm wary of wading into things I don't fully understand. I'll contact other PVs for their opinion. Thanks ErsatzCulture 18:46, 24 January 2022 (EST)

Poul Anderson's The Year of the Ransom

Hello, Michael! The entry already states "A rough word count makes it 25,000 words." and guesses that it's really not a novel. I don't know who entered this, but I guess that makes the text a novella, and the publication a CHAPBOOK. I'd like to adapt this accordingly. Do you have any other information about this? Regards, Christian Stonecreek 01:44, 30 March 2022 (EDT)

Feel free to change the publication into a chapbook. Mhhutchins|talk 15:58, 7 April 2022 (EDT)

New Terrors Titles

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?283720; I recently discovered a photo of the original Pan edition of New Terrors 2 which showed the title page says New Terrors Two, so title and cover art/intro were changed to reflect that; however, the zine linked above has a review of New Terrors 2. Does it say that in your PV copy? Also, there's a review of New Terrors 1, but there is no such title; Pan and Pocket editions were just New Terrors on their title pages, while Pocket edition of the second volume was New Terrors II. It's likely this American magazine reviewed the American editions, in which case the reviews should be linked to those specific editions, I think. --Username 19:37, 12 April 2022 (EDT)

Reviews are linked to title records, not publication records. It is not possible to link a review to any specific edition of a book. In this case, the reviewer wanted to differentiate the two volumes by numbering each, even though the actual book doesn't have that number. I entered the title as it is stated in the publication, and then manually linked the review record to the title record of the title being reviewed. Mhhutchins|talk 04:00, 2 May 2022 (EDT)

If you made a mistake when entering info from your copy, after correcting the title it needs to be hooked up with "Snakes and Ladders", http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1151169, which appears in Campbell's collection here, https://archive.org/details/inconsequentialt0000camp. --Username 11:52, 23 July 2022 (EDT)

In War Times

In the Afterword to In War Times Goonan says that her father, Thomas E. Goonan, wrote the sections of the book that appear as Sam's narratives. These make up a significant portion of the book. She also credits him in the Acknowledgments. As PV, do you think that he should be given co-author credit? Just mentioned in the notes?Jim (talk) 18:54, 19 November 2022 (EST)
