Question about "The Mysterious Stranger"

In an anthology you verified, The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories, there's a story called "The Mysterious Stranger" which has the date in the database of 1823. Now, the editor of Dracula's Precursors says that this story was "originally published in German in 1823 and translated into English soon after" and Michael Sims, editor of Dracula's Guest, says it was first published in English in 1860. If this is true, then the story should have the date of 1860 in the database (and should be merged with this record). By the way, according to Douglas A. Anderson, this story is a translation of Karl von Wachsmann's "Der Fremde", whose earliest known publication date is 1844, but that doesn't affect the question of its earliest publication in English.

Anyhow, my point is, could you take a look at Vampire Stories and see if it gives any reason to think this story was published in English earlier than 1860? After I collect replies from other verifiers, I'll either merge these records or not. Thanks! --Vasha 18:54, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

"Martyr Without Canon" title type + original publishing info change

Hi. This affects your (and Don Erickson's) verified The Year's Best Horror Stories: XVI. I will leave this same note for Don.

I accepted a submission changing Martyr Without Canon from short story to poem and removing the note about original publication in The Horror Show, Winter 1987. The editor's submission stated the note was in error and that the original publication was in Grue #4 (still 1987).

I did a little research and could not find anything definitive, but Homeville/Locus do list it as a poem in that anthology and cite Grue #4 as the original publication, and I found some secondary review references also describing it as a poem. So I decided to go ahead and accept the change. I also replaced the note about the original publication source in the title record.

If you see this, please check if that's correct (and I apologize if it's not) -- we don't have an active primary verifier. Thanks. --MartyD 12:44, 1 January 2021 (EST)

I found a 2004 anthology on Fantlab, Quietly Now, which has an interview with Charles L. Grant by Hank Wagner. Cemetery Dance #58, [2], has tributes to Grant by various authors and 1 of them is listed as by Hank Wanger on ISFDB. Since an early version of the story appears in the novel, I have no problem with a note about it at the novel's title level. It wouldn't be necessary to note it at the publication level since it probably appears in all publications of the novel. Mhhutchins|talk 02:14, 6 September 2021 (EDT)

I was entering a publication and didn't know what to do with Introduction and Editor's Note. Looking through other publications, I see some have included the already created section, Introduction. But no one had made a section out of Editor's Note. When seeing your publication I noticed a curious note: "There is a four-page "Editor's Note" starting on page ix which is an authorial conceit and considered part of the novel which is titled after the note as The Confessions of Howard W. Razorblade

I entered the price that was given first, as stated in the notes. And since Razorblade was published in Prague, not the UK, I believe I was correct in the way the record was entered. Perhaps it would be a good idea to contact the few other verifiers of other publications from this publisher to confirm that the prices they have given conform to the same pattern as the one in my verified record. Interesting, because another book by them that I entered the price for recently had the UK price first ([3]); also, the other 2 PV'd books have the British price; yours is the only PV'd book that has the American price. But if you say that's the way it is on your copy then I guess it's so. OK, but since the currency in Czechoslovakia is the crown and the only prices on the books are British pounds or American dollars and the people involved with publishing and writing all the books seem to be exclusively British it stands to reason that the British price would be the predominant one. I was told by a mod to discuss my change with PV, so that's what I did; if you don't agree with the change, fine. On a side note, the previous message on your board was also by me, and there's 1 other from February, so when you have the time if you could check those and let me know if my changes were correct that would be great. Since the Czech currency wasn't printed on the book, I find your statement to be irrelevant. In the past, it was ISFDB policy to record the first price when two or more are printed on the book. If that policy has changed, please link to the documentation. About the above image, I wanted it to show on this page rather than linking to it.

Since you chose for your username to be Username, you've created a problem, because clicking on your "username" doesn't go to your talk page as it should. Things would have gone much more smoothly if you'd simply followed the request at the top of my talk page. Since I've had countless people leave messages on my talk page I doubt anyone's had a problem reaching me if they need to; perhaps the problem is several months ago when 1 of the many disturbed people editing here decided to hack my page with an insulting message, for which they were warned by moderators and told not to do it again, after which a mod locked that section of my page so no one could hack it again. Also, since the title "Shogun's Welcome" was entered incorrectly by you, and very likely the Hank Wagner name I asked you about nearly a year ago, the problem is not that I'm making unnecessary changes to your work but rather fixing it for you. Coincidentally, I did some minor stuff today for a couple of records you worked on, and your editing dates went back nearly 15 years, so it's not like you're a relative newcomer like me. The Razorblade issue is a matter of semantics re: how best to enter prices, but the other stuff were just flat-out mistakes. We all make mistakes. I've made almost 350,000 submissions to this database, each of them containing dozens of entries, and thousands of characters. I have moderated more than a half-million submissions as well. Even if I made 1000 mistakes, it would be infinitesimally small compared to what I've done for this database, along with the thousands of hours that I worked to build it. I will ask you one last time to follow ISFDB standards and not make any submission to change a primary verified record. You should have the courtesy to follow the notification instructions that your fellow editors have asked at the top of their talk pages. (BTW, have you ever actually clicked on your name in the posts you've made in these wiki pages? Just a quick note - clicking on one’s name Leads to their user page. It looks weird for Username’s page because another editor posted on it once and the page was deleted as opposed to edited but that has nothing to do with what their name is. When I click on your name, Annie, it leads me to your page where I can click on "Discuss this page". I can't do that with the person with the username Username. Try it. I did try it - now again to make sure I am not wrong but also repeatedly before that while moderating their submissions. The Discussion link is up at the top albeit looking half-hidden or look so because of how the page looks under it. look on top of the “Editing User:Username” page. There are “user”, “discussion”, “edit” and undelete links. Would not have posted if I had not tried - it is just the way wiki looks under this specific way of page deletion. :) As for the rest - Username had been warned repeatedly about the same thing by pretty much anyone that had ever worked with them. The displayed skin looks like "Cologne Blue". I tested it a couple of minutes ago and it looks like it hides a number of standard links on empty User pages. Could you please temporarily change your settings to the default ("MonoBook") skin to see if it fixes the problem? The top row should display the following tabs:

Gwendy's Button Box - subseries of Castle Rock?

Hi, you're a PV on this, I have a question - there's an upcoming book which in the UK at least is promoted as the third in a trilogy (see also Goodreads). Do you have any objection to making this the first part of a new "Gwendy's Button Box" series, and making that a subseries of the current "Castle Rock" series?

I haven't read any King for about ~30 years, and have only the vaguest awareness of how his works inter-relate, so I'm wary of wading into things I don't fully understand. I'll contact other PVs for their opinion. Thanks ErsatzCulture 18:46, 24 January 2022 (EST)

New Terrors Titles

Does it say that in your PV copy? Also, there's a review of New Terrors 1, but there is no such title; Pan and Pocket editions were just New Terrors on their title pages, while Pocket edition of the second volume was New Terrors II. Reviews are linked to title records, not publication records. It is not possible to link a review to any specific edition of a book. In this case, the reviewer wanted to differentiate the two volumes by numbering each, even though the actual book doesn't have that number. In War Times

In the Afterword to In War Times Goonan says that her father, Thomas E. Goonan, wrote the sections of the book that appear as Sam's narratives. These make up a significant portion of the book.
