I felt I needed to add this note. "Cover art and frontispiece by Hannah M. G. Shapero. This frontispiece is present and is missing in some later printings. No apparent signature." I have the Seventh printing and it was missing the frontispiece and I so noted that. Thus I thought it important to note that your ver had it in case someone needed to see it. Earth Abides -- dating question

I have a copy of Earth Abides that sort of matches your verified RTHBDS1971, the notable exception being that my copy's copyright page states:

Printed in the United States of America

May 1971

at the bottom. Above that is the LCCN. It is the $0.95, #M1551 Fawcett Crest book, and it matches the cover image associated with the entry. The SBN appears only on the spine. I see in the notes your copy did not have a date and there was some question of the date's origin.

What do you think? Should I create a new entry, since I seem to have a different printing? Should I change the existing entry to 1971-05-00? --MartyD 22:04, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

I pulled my copy, as you suggested I could, and I find that I still totally match Marc's description. A couple of questions. My copy has the copyright page start approximately half way down. Does yours? Where did they place the two lines? Above or below? Do they look like the same type or do they look slightly different? My last page (318 actual count) has a page of ads. They start right side T1550 75¢, M1552 95¢, P1526 $1.25. etc. Does yours match? I checked ABE and one vendor is definitely selling an undated printing M1551. The careful way he states it, makes me positive that he is open to seeing one's with correct dating.

Not to take over, but I think Marc is going to say go ahead and add yours with the date given and noted differences. I think the DB has to assume that what you have is a 'tangible' difference. This will make it easier to compare and keep in mind while checking. A reasonable possibility is that Marc's/mine are printed in Canada, without it being so stated. If you clone from Marc's, I believe it will create no new problems, and if it is later decided to delete or merge the two, the mods have that ability. I have seen Ace printings stating first printing, first edition and they were not, so usually the best thing is to add, note completely and watch the fur fly. You also could ask on the community board for other people to check if they have the same copy, but that is a long shot. Thanks, Harry. --Dragoondelight 13:52, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

I will add my copy with the notes as another pub. My copy's copyright page starts halfway down, too. Title line, "This book contains the complete text..." block-letter sentence, A Fawcett Crest Book... sentence, copyright line, All rights reserved... paragraph, Except for an occasional reference... paragraph, LCCN line, a couple of blank lines, Printed in the United States of America line, May 1971 (this as low as they print the text on each page, on the line above the line they put page numbers on).

My ad page is different. P1599 $1.25, M1600 95¢, P1601 $1.25, etc. In fact, none of your three examples is listed in mine. Curious. I am going to take the ad entries you cite above and add them to the notes of the existing pub and add these examples from mine to the new pub to help the next editor. --MartyD 11:13, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Marty, apologies to you. I am totally blind and stupid. I just checked your line by line and discovered I made an error in checking my copy. I saw "Published by Fawcett World Library (over) 67 West 44th Street, New York, N. Y. 10036". I took the whole as an address but the next line reads "Printed in the United States of American" (over) "May 1971". I feel like a dolt, but I have to wonder if Marc may have done the same. I am amazed that the add page is different as the opposite is the last of the text of the novel. If I read the above correctly you do not have the first two lines. Sorry for the havoc, but if you have blank spaces we still are looking at a copyright page change plus the add page. Makes you wonder when they actually printed it. No need to apologize for anything. I did update the notes on the existing pub with the ad info and added a new pub -- still pending approval, but I'll add a link here to the new one once it's accepted. When I get home tonight (it's ~12:30pm ET where I am), I will reproduce here the entire copyright page and provide more details on the ad page (and see if I can find anything else helpful). My first mis-match is that I have two lines of address before the "Printed in the United States" on copyright page. On the add page the top is different, and I do not have those items later, but your bottom three are complete matches. My product number line reads top to bottom, T1550, M1552, P1536, P1537, M1538, P1522, M1523, M1450, M1365, M1525, M1478, M1398, P1503, M1504, T1505, M1497, M1482, T1485, Q1388, P1467, M1408. The ad page being different and as I said the opposite page is novel text shows they were capable of changes, which suggests they could do it during the printing cycle. Correct cover? It better be, as that many prices listed can't have stayed stable for long. Prince of Scorpio- map information

Afternoon! This. [16] . I added information to the firs printing which is slightly different than yours. I sent a message to the memebers of Yahoo Group Kregen and got two replies. First is from the editor of Mushroom/Bladud Books which is publishing the series and working to get the German versions into e-book and print.

The maps are based on Ken's originals, but were redrawn by DAW house artists (who may have included Jack Gaughan). The quality of the paper and printing required heavier lines than Ken's originals. Some appear to include errors - we found and corrected a few errors and omissions in the Havilfar map when preparing it for the wiki.

There are scanned copies of Ken's originals in the wiki. For instance:

The second is from the owner of the group, ZaPeet is another editor who was trying to get the books not published in Englis into ebook format. He got five, and found it financially impossible for him. Ken Bulmer and he became very tight and the maps came through him in the original and so were secured by Martin Heldson, at Mushroom/Bladud Books.

ZaPeet did indeed provide these maps, obtained from Ken himself!

I treasure them because both Tambu and Bet-Aqsa are shown definitively. Sadly, Ba-Domek is not but we know it is fairly close to both of these two lands, in the Ocean of Doubt.

I do not know if this clarifies anything, but it shows I and they are still involved in all things Bulmer. Maybe, it will give you a laugh. I am not suggesting a change. I was surprised to find the map in our copies of PoS are actually 'cut outs' of the map in the omnibus. Template:BibHeader

It seems that in {{BibHeader}} and {{AuthorHeader}} we have created tow near duplicate templates -- at least two templates intended for the same purpose. I suggest that we merge the desired functionality into one of them, and make the outer a redirect. I note that {{BibHeader}} does not support the altName mechanism, and thus cannot be used on any disambiguated author names like Colin_Harvey_(1971-) or D._F._Jones_(US). -DES ^Talk 13:08, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I saw that too the other day and made a note to merge them but was undecided if Author or Bib is better as a prefix. FWIW, I have been using the name AuthorHeader recently simply as I remember its name based on the namespace name and not out of preference for the argument support or the contents of the header box.

I just looked at the two and feel the header and logic for "AuthorHeader" is better. While AuthorHeader's help is more complete I like the wording of the BibHeader help. The placement of the author name in AuthorHeader is disconcerting.

Something that seems consistent would be:

• {{BioHeader}} on [[Bio:Name]] pages.
• {{AuthorHeader}} on [[Author:Name]] pages.
• {{PublisherHeader}} on [[Publisher:Name]] pages.
• {{PubHeader}} on [[Publication:Tag]] pages. Add a redirect for {{PublicationHeader}}?
• Continuing this we would add {{SeriesHeader}} for [[Series:Tag/record]] pages. Maybe that's missing as at present there's no cgi to map a series name to record number via the URL.

I've sometimes found myself on one of the namespace pages and wondering which was the correct header for that page. I'd try a few names, getting red links, give up, put anything there knowing you'll come along in a minute and fix it. :-) It was particularly frustrating recently as the template I wanted had not been included in Category:Header Templates...

I'm all for then adding redirects for the permutations as some people remember the names by function such as {{BiographyHeader}}, {{BibliographyHeader}}, {{BibliographicCommentsHeader}}, plus versions with the space in the name such as {{Author Header}}. If we ever get better conditional support then a plain {{Header}} can do the trick.

I have implemented the old-style conditionals with {{Qif}}, {{ifdef}}, and {{ifndef}}, it is maore akward to code than the built-in ParserFunctions-based :If conditions, and it can cause performance problems on huge wikis like wikipedia, but it does work. Look at the coding of {[tl|AuthorHeader}} if you want to see it in action. I am dubious about a theoretical {{Header}} however, because the Publisher: Namespace, at least, requres an argument for {{PublisherHeader}}, and there are alternates for "verified" publisher and Imprints that can't be detected from the namespace alone. Still it is a thought. I'll see about merging the existing author templates, and creating some redirects. -DES ^Talk 20:31, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Merge done, and all the redirects you suggested have been created. However I did not create the multi-function {{header}}, nor {{SeriesHeader}}, the latter because the linking template {{Series}}, at least as currently implemented, requires a record number. Since series get renamed rather more often than authors, i think it would be better to use an ID numbers if possible. But perhaps better support for name links can be provided in those templates. -DES ^Talk 23:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Template:Series

Template:Series looks pretty good, but if you are going to support a parameter altname as well as altName, it must be supported at each use. I have made the needed change. -DES ^Talk 23:46, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Please do not remove altName support unless you are willing to require (and document the requirement) that users link by record number to any series with a special character in the name. There are currently 282 series with an "(" in their title, and 303 with a single quote. Other unsupported characters probably occur also. -DES ^Talk 00:53, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I have fixed Template:Series to support {{Series|id=123}}

Parameters for SeriesHeader‎ and PubSeriesHeader‎

Please note that {{SeriesHeader}}‎ and {{PubSeriesHeader‎}}, as currently coded, do not support unnamed parameters -- the name and id parameters must be explicitly specified with "name=" and "id=". this is so that the conditional code can test for the presence or absence of the id parameter.

Yep, I was just thinking about that and about how many permutations I want to support. At minimum I see

• {{SeriesHeader}} will link using {{Series|{{PAGENAME}}}}
• {{SeriesHeader|id=record}} will use {{Series|id=record|name={{PAGENAME}}}}

Other combinations are possible and I'm thinking if Altname support is not needed given we have ID and NAME. Something that may simplify the logic is to always call Series with ID and NAME as it'll work just fine if you happen to call it with a name in the ID field. Thank you for the altName/altname fix. I'd stolen that from {{a}} which I see you just fixed and wondered how it could work...

I forgot to sign but also the brain is fried for now. I'll deal with updating SeriesHeader later unless you want to tackle it. I'm thinking these are possible.

1. {{SeriesHeader}} will use {{Series|{{PAGENAME}}}}
2. {{SeriesHeader|something}} will use {{Series|something}}
3. {{SeriesHeader|id=record}} will use {{Series|id=record|name={{PAGENAME}}}}
4. {{SeriesHeader|id=record|something}} will use {{Series|id=record|name=something}}
5. {{SeriesHeader|id=record|name=something}} will use {{Series|id=record|name=something}}

altName support is needed, if we are to link by name, here are a few examples:

• Andromeda (anthologies)
• Angel (Kilworth)
• Animals in the Wild (childrens non-genre)
• Anthologys (non-genre)
• Arthurian sequence (Wein)
• Assiti Shards (1632)
• Assiti Shards (Other)
• Astounding / Analog (1937-1971)
• Author, Author! (Future Science Fiction)
• Author, Author! (Science Fiction Stories)

Anchorencode will not work correctly on any name with a parenthesis or a single quote included, and is not guaranteed safe on any character outside A-Z, a-z, and 0-9

Or I suppose we could require the use of a record number for such series titles.

If you want to retain the unlinked option and the conditional code, then I don't think this one can default to the pagename (for {{PubSeriesHeader}} that option is essential, as there often isn't an actual db series record to link to). That option can be dispensed with, i suppose, in which case one could link to ID, which if unspecified defaults to name, which if unspecified defaults to the first parameter, which if unspecified defaults to PAGENAME ({{{id|{{{name|{{{1|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}}}}}}) plus conditionals for altName similar to those in {{AuthorHeader}}. -DES ^Talk 00:44, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

That makes sense. I was doing some testing of the various permutations and for {{Series|id=16601}} which is a rather common current usage. It linked to record 16601 but the name "altname" rather than the expected "16601." I thought about fixing that by putting altname in the outer wrapper but need to think about the various permuations of possible ways to call the thing that make sense. The only ones we really care about, and don't want to break, are

1. {{Series|16601}} - 16601 should show as 16601 - This usage is common.

the order of altName and altname is irrelevant, because they should never be specified together. name must be in the URL sequence to support the case where name is the only paramater. 2 and 1 must override id in the name parameter to handle cases 2 & 3 above correctly. Template:BC

I see you recently created Template:BC. It seems to me that this largely duplicates {{PubHeader}} although it is not in a header style. Should it be converted to a redirect to {{PubHeader}}, or should it be retained for cases where a non-header style is desired, and documented as an alternative on the PubHeader doc page, and on Help:List of ISFDB Templates? -DES ^Talk 14:44, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I changed the one publication that used {{BC}} to use {{PubHeader}} and have deleted BC. At the time I added BC the PubHeader template did not exist. I was also thinking more along the lines of having the template name match the function of the page (Publication Bibliographic Comments), wanted the name to be short, and also wanted the name to be easy to remember. I like the new XxxHeader form much better as it seems it's much more likely people will remember the names plus with the alias/redirects they can guess at a reasonable name and even if they get the wrong header then can they quickly find the right one via the category.

Can we do conditional logic based on if someone viewing a page is logged into the wiki? As the headers are new something that may encourage their use is to add a boilerplate "Please see header templates for more information about this header" to the end of each of the header templates (template the boilerplate). The goal is to both make people aware of the templates and also to make it easy to find them. Only people that are logged in would need to see this. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:24, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

If there is a way for templates to display differently based on whether the viewer is logged in I don't know of it. It would be possible to put some text into a special CSS class that would display differently depending on a user's individual style sheets, but that wouldn't make a difference unless we got all regular users to edit their personal monobook.css files. We can add the boilerplate if you like, but everyone will see it. It is apparently also possible to change the DB code so that when someone goes to a wiki page via one of the db links, and that page doesn't yet exist, it will be preloaded with the proper header template. On further research i found this mediawiki help page It shows how to create a special CSS class that has different properties for logged-in and not-logged-i users, at the cost of editing a site-level file to create the style. I think any admin can do this. Then a span tag using the named style could have a "no-display" setting if the user was not-logged in, but display normally for logged-in users. In terms of BC - I did not like adding yet another two letter template to the list of things people would need to remember plus at the time I added that I was thinking we need to sit back a moment and come up with a consistent naming system as both author and publication records can link to bibliographic comments pages.

I knew it would take either Al or Ahasuerus to do the style solution which is why I suggested magic words which would seem to be more intuitive to someone looking at one of the header templates. It's probably not that huge of a deal of the message is visible to everyone as few non-logged in people are likely to even be looking at the comments pages. If we template it then it'll be easy to remove the message should it become an issue.

Mildred Clingerman and agents

I have frequently seen on copyright pages notices of the form "Written by X; Reprinted by permission of Y" where it was clear that Y was an agent, rahte than that X was a pesud of Y. True and so I rewrote the Clingerman note. I need to get back to that particular project and to clean up the remaining pages but am concentrating on dealing with some easier to deal with books for a while. That anthology has fifty stories and more than half of them turn out to have X and Y stuff.

BTW - do you know of any decent, and free, OCR software? More specifically, something that'll work on Windows 2000 but I can speak XP if needed. I had a submission that wanted to make variants of two slightly different titles of Caitlin R. Kiernan's story in this anthology. Can you check your verified copy of this book to see how the story is titled? (It originally didn't have the parenthetical phrase or was spelled "Waterworks". I can't recall which.) I merged all of the titles under this one because it matched OCLC records. Locus1 gives the year in the title as "1988" which doesn't match any OCLC records so I'm pretty sure they're wrong. Thanks. Karel Čapek

I am trying to recreate Bug 2938454, "Unicode in author names", and I am not having much luck. There is no canonical name for "Karel Čapek", only a legal name for "Čapek, Karel". I wonder if the spelling of the canonical name may have been changed since the bug report was created?

On a more elevated plane, I was surprised that Advanced Search worked since the database is currently Latin-1 encoded and Unicode won't work reliably until we upgrade to UTF-8. Unfortunately, it's apparently easier said than done... Ahasuerus 00:36, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

I agree - easier said than done to fix this one. However, I believe the quick fix is only in one spot. At se.py line 282 you pick up AUTHOR_CANONICAL, translate space to _, and then just write it out. The 'author' variable contains "Karel_Čapek". It turns out that you we get away with encoding Unicode as HTML on the URL as that's how we encode these in the database. This it's just a straight mapping of things like & # ; etc. into their % codes. Click on http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Karel_%26%23268%3Bapek.

That'll fix searching for Karel Čapek but we should do a better job in ae.cgi. Specifically, the UTF-8 encoding of pure 21-bit Unicode values should work too. At present http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Karel_%C4%8Capek fails. We will get this encoding when sites such as Wikipedia link to us. To handle this we will need to scan AUTHOR_CANONICAL and if we come across a %xx series that is valid UTF-8 then decode the resulting Unicode character and look to see if it's valid ISO-8859-1. If so we use the 8-bit value literally. If not, then re-encode that as an HTML escaped character. The Unicode code point for Č is 268 meaning we convert that to Č. If someone put %C3%A9 in an author name on the URL then we decode that to 233, see that it's valid ISO-8859-1, and will have an "é" in our author name.

Do you have a UTF-8 validator coded in Python? If not, I can likely write up the code in C with enough comments that you'll see what I'm doing. If you hit %xx values that turn out to not be valid UTF-8 then interpret them as ISO-8859-1 values. You already do the ISO-8859-1 interpretation by doing nothing. :-)

I added War With the Newts for testing Bug 2938454 which is why Karel Čapek is in the database now. Once support for Č works I was planning to notify the verifiers for the publications listed on Author:Karel Capek. I believe all of Karel Čapek's books used "Čapek" except for the Bantam edition of War With the Newts which uses Capek and an Albanian short story collection, Tregime të zgjedhura, which uses Çapek. (My fingers would hurt if I try to type in the title and so see this). FWIW, I'm certain that all of Josef Capek's books use Čapek (he's Karel's brother). --Marc Kupper|talk 07:28, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Update - I just realized that another reason for adding the UTF-8 support is that it will allow Karel Čapek to work. Note that at present the template {{a}} is coded using anchorencode which converts to Karel_.C4.8Capek. That was the wrong string function. anchorencode allows people to construct URLs to mediawiki sites and where the link URL is to a section of a page. You 'anchorencode' the section name. I don't know if the anchorencode in {{a}} was by design but once UTF-8 support is added to ae.cgi we can change it to 'urlencode' and that'll generate Karel_%C4%8Capek. --Marc Kupper|talk 08:34, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

If my understanding is correct, the core problem is that our MySQl tables are using Latin-1 and the standard Swedish (sic) collation sequence instead of UTF-8. We will need to convert all tables to UTF-8 before we can address any other problems and that, as experience shows, is not easy. Besides, we would need to run it by Al and see what he says first. He spent a fair amount of time fighting Unicode in 2005-2008 and he may have valuable ideas to share. Ahasuerus 03:37, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

The quick-search issue should get fixed anyway as we are not url-encoding the author name at all. I also realized that rather than a UTF-validator it'll be easier to code a decoder as long as it's one that just passes invalid data "as-is".

Something I found interesting were the preface essays. Each story is preceded by a one paragraph essay by the author and another by one of the other authors. A lot of writers struggle with being known as science fiction or fantasy writers as that's not "real literature." They write about that and try to say "look here, this story is literature. Hence, the title "The Secret History of Science Fiction" is inaccurate as many of the stories are specfict. I believe Speculative fiction as Literature would be a better title.

One midly bothersome aspect is that it's printed on low quality paper. The book has that "lightweight" feel you usually get with book club editions. --Marc Kupper|talk 01:04, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I agree with "What the #*!**" ;-) and the comments you added to the publication notes. I'm leaning towards that this is manufactured in the USA with a cover that was intended for the Canadian market. The Canadian edition covers were printed in the USA meaning someone could have grabbed stock off the wrong pallet. Don't the Canadian covers state "printed in the USA?" I'll need to look at some USA and Canadian covers from that time period but also need to go to sleep too...

Had this been a later USA printing they would have removed the "No. 392" from the yellow box on the front cover, and replaced it with a new catalog number. --Marc Kupper|talk 10:48, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

The whole derived ISBN thing is getting quite circular! An editor here derives an ISBN, we get data-mined and the next thing there are a dozen sites with the ISBN. And once that horse has bolted the barn door is vapor! I always find it amusing, and sometimes not so much, to search an ISBN and find the only source is us.... though of course we're not the only ones doing this. I only consider deriving if the © is post-1970, and only then if there is at least an SBN or the publisher code plus a five digit [usually on the spine]. When I derive an ISBN I check to see if it's used on Amazon and use it in the catalog # field if Amazon has a record for the book. Thus we're not introducing extra noise though we do raise the noise floor. When Amazon got started Penguin uploaded the entire DAW catalog, including out of print books, using derived ISBNs meaning it's safe to derive ISBNs for those.

If you find that we are the only ones using an ISBN, and it's a derived ISBN in the catalog # field, then ISFDB's record should be updated to use the publication's stated catalog # and the derived ISBN would go in the publication notes. I believe the only reason we put derived ISBNs in the catalog # field is to facilate links to book seller sites. While that seems overly commercial I have found the links to be useful and regularly use them to look at the Amazon records for bibliographic data. --Marc Kupper|talk 18:53, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I wouldn't say there's a copyright page--just a title page with the publisher's name: "Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow". And no, there's no mention of editor anywhere. However, on the other side of the title page is the statement: "Translated from the Russian by Violet L. Dutt, Designed by N. Grishin".

   * One seller says "signed by John Brunner" for the copy they are selling and also says "Dutt, Violet L. (trans)." Is there evidence of a connection to John Brunner in your copy?

There is no mention, or any indication, that John Brunner was connected with the book in any way.

   * Does your copy have an introduction? It seems a year after A Visitor From Outer Space came out Collier reprinted it but also included an introduction by Isaac Asimov. 

Now that you mention it, I have a vague memory of Asimov's name and a Soviet Sci-Fi book (maybe I'm thinking of "More Soviet science-fiction"). I'll make a point of reading this booklet soon and see if any stories jog my memory. This copy, however, has no introduction and no name other than the individual authors and the translator & designer.

In keeping with the soviet era policy of downplaying personality, this book is devoid of any but the minimal personal info identifying anyone.

I can verify Majackson's comments about the lack of any sort of copyright info (other then "Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow" and that the last page indicates it was printed in the USSR) or editor identification. There is no introduction or evidence that Brunner was involved in anyway. FWIW: The story "A Visitor From OUterspace" does in fact include a footnote that is longer then the story itself -- it is essentially a mock-essay on the plausibility of extraterrestrial life, complete with section headings.

I went with William Baldwin as the parent since that appears to be more commonly used. Assumed but stated?

I'm not sure what you mean by the first bulleted note in this pub. Aren't "assumed" and "stated" contradictory terms? Otherwise everything that's printed (stated) in a pub would have to be be assumed. Then would it logically be assumed that the printed ISBN and price are correct because there's a possibility that the publisher may have printed the wrong numbers? I use "assumed first printing" when a publication does not have a number line. I also note what's stated so that people can decide for themselves if they consider it to be a "first printing." The original idea was to speed up the process of filling in the printing # field should we ever add that and so I have also been in the habit of using one of:

• Assumed first printing that states "xxxx". There is no number line.
• First printing that states "xxxx" and "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9".
• Third printing that states "xxxx" and "3 4 5 6 7 8 9".

In other words, I start out saying what printing I believe this is and then give the evidence.

Maybe I should start a community portal thread about that. Excluding publisher errors, are there examples of publications that state something like "First Printing: February, 1977" without a number line that are not first printings? --Marc Kupper|talk 04:48, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

None that I'm personally aware of. As you just responded to another topic (about the use of LCCNs and the determination of "first editions"), I agree that it is not our responsibility to determine whether a "first printing" or "first edition" statement is correct. It looks like I did not see the star before as usually I'd add a note explaining the star was not on my copy. I've scanned/uploaded my cover.

It's curious that yours seems to have a publisher applied star. I see the last line of the back cover blurb is "This book is an absolutely stellar collection." I've e-mailed the original scans of the front and back cover to you so that you can see if other things were changed. I have seen a few 'gold star stamped' used books before, but this book and about 225 others came from bookseller by way of 'Van Hise' through the 'Forrest J. Ackerman' estate and the majority of books were bagged and in super shape (packed in boxes addressed to Van Hise). My thoughts are that many are/were review copies or free 'con' gifts. This 'gold star' is not a bookseller mark. Careful check shows that 'gold foil' was laid on the cover and the stamp applied hard as it indented through cover and several pages. The puzzle is I also set the story length to "ss" which is something I do on the second pass through the stories and then missed this on the verification passes. Hello, Marc, this is Christian Steinbacher (pseudonym: Stonecreek) writing. Generally, I am fine with your changes, especially in making Ernest Vleck a pseudonym. But in the case of Iwoleit it is the other way around: Michael K. Iwoleit is the pseudonym of Michael Iwoleit. He told me ca. 1988 that he mainly published under this name to honour Philip "K." I had picked "Michael K. Iwoleit" as I saw three novels under that name and one for Michael Iwoleit. I also saw Michael K. Iwoleit on the Gewrman Wikipedia. Generally Wikipedia article titles are for the most common or well known name. The "works" section of that article has four novels and again it's a 3 to 1 split on Michael K. Iwoleit vs. Michael Iwoleit. The Google results are 195,000 vs. 52,300 pages. It's not clear if this is a site he has direct control over. I assumed he has input as he's posted a short story in PDF form. That site, and the story, both use Michael K. Iwoleit. Thus it seemed reasonable to have Michael Iwoleit as a pseudonym of Michael K. Iwoleit.

The main uncertainty was I could not find cover images for the books other than Psyhack (which has "Michael K. Iwoleit") meaning I could not see if they stated "Michael Iwoleit" but were listed on the Internet as "Michael K. Iwoleit." I checked AbeBooks and Worldcat without success. Titan has a cover image but it does not show the author name.

I don't have a problem with flipping it the other way around around but am not comfortable doing that based on a single comment in 1988. Have you seen anything that would help improve the case for using "Michael Iwoleit" and making a "Michael K. Iwoleit" a pseudonym? --Marc Kupper|talk 20:49, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Yes, you are absolutely right, and I agree that Michael K. Iwoleit should remain the canonical name. But I met him from 1983 to 1989 monthly (in sf club meetings) and he was ever only Michael Iwoleit - until the first stories were published with a "K.". So, I asked him, if he had a new middle name, and got the above answer. So, this seems to be the one in a thousand case that the longer name is the pseudonym for the shorter. (In fact, there might be another German author with the initials R. P. as middle name, meaning Reine Phantasie = Pure Fantasy). But that author is known for a crooked sense of humour (and i don't know him personally), which Iwoleit is not. The wikipedia entry maker supposedly concluded that M. K. ISFDB support for shortfiction translated titles

Please see the comment I added to your correspondence with user Stonecreek about his edits to this pub record. I rejected his submission to remove the English title records, and instead removed the German-language translated titles. I also had to delete the title records which were created when the submission adding them (the German titles) was accepted. The ISFDB doesn't support title records for translated shortfiction using the translated titles. Stonecreek believed he would have been able to make them variants of the English titles, and that's incorrect (they must be merged with the English title records, just as novel title records are). There is something peculiar about A Magic of Nightfall: Volume Two of the Nessantico Cycle. According to the Contents section, half the short stories were written by "Stephen Leigh [as by S. L. I've fixed this. After the publication was entered I had done a pass where I added the variant titles to the contents. Somewhere in the process "A Magic of Nightfall" fell into the copy/paste buffer when it should have been "S. L. Farrell". I was dealing with the "A Magic of Nightfall" publication and so never spotted a few extra appearances of the title. Plus, my attention was mainly on the complicated table of contents. 1. Amazon dates ISBNs 0-87997-559-8 and 0-88677-217-6 as "DAW; Reissue edition (May 5, 1987)." It's not known which price/printing was printed in 1987.
2. Note – the printing date for this publication is unknown. Rather than using 0000-00-00 this publication in ISFDB has been dated using the YYYY-MM of the first printing and the day of the month is set to the printing number to get the publication sorted into a reasonable spot relative to other printings for this edition.

The Best of Leigh Brackett

You are the primary verifier for this book. I have made two small changes in the contents listing. The contents listing said that the in-universe essay "Mars" on p. 365 was a short story by Leigh Brackett. But it's signed by the artist of the maps (Margaret Howes), and the preceding essay by Brackett "About the Maps of Mars" makes it clear that Howes is the author of that short essay, so I have changed that attribution. Also, the essay "About the Maps of Mars" is, technically, part of the "Afterword", but it seems separate enough (with its own title and signature) to justify a separate inclusion as an essay, so I have listed that as such. I'll need to tear my office apart and find the book. To clear the queue I decided to approve the updates. Based on the comments at Publication:THBSCKTTAD1977 it looks like I spent some time thinking about who to credit and why I decided to use Leigh Brackett rather than Margaret Howes. Thus once I find the publication (probably this weekend) I'll revisit this.

You said the p. 365 essay "makes it clear that Howes is the author of that short essay." I read the essay and had written "it's clear that Margaret Howes' only contribution to this collection is the map." Thus the essay seems clear to both of us and we came to opposite conclusions. I suspect the best resolution will be to extract and document exact wording from the essay and leave it up to anyone looking at the record down the road to decide for themselves if Brackett or Howes is the author. As the essay in question states "Margaret M. Howes" as the "author" it seems reasonable that the publication record should state this and that even if Leigh Brackett wrote the essay to honor Howes that Brackett's intent was that Margaret M. Howes be credited.

For the record, the changes were:

• Mars essay. You changed the author from Leigh Brackett to Margaret Howes and added the note "In-universe essay "by the Survey Commission Office, Kahora, Mars", but actually by the artist who made the Mars maps for Leigh Brackett." Once Michael approves your update I'd like to revise this note to link to Publication:THBSCKTTAD1977 which discusses this essay.

I've gone back and looked at this again, and I think that I erred on adding the essay "About the Maps of Mars". I was thinking that this was a part of the addendum, but in fact it is the entire addendum. (I may have confused "Addendum" with "Afterword".) Thus what's listed here now as two content items should be a single one. In the book, it lists it as:

In this case I wanted to inspect all the records before deleting to see if anyone had added notes. I've sometimes done mass or bulk operations on ISFDB using JavaScript. The Golden One by Deborah Chester

Concerning this pub: I don't fully understand why the date and the publisher of the record don't match the book you're verifying (according to the notes). When did Amazon's data (never 100% reliable) take precedence over the data stated in the book itself? Mhhutchins 22:47, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

The reasoning was that this publication is not Ace 0-441-00561-6 which does state "Ace edition / February 1998" but rather is Boulevard 1-57297-278-5 and I ignored the the Ace information that's on the copyright page as this is a Boulevard book. You'll see that the publication record's ISBN is 1-57297-278-5 which is on the stickers and not 0-441-00561-6 which was under the stickers.

I also made the assumption that these are publisher applied stickers and not something a distributor or reseller did. Thus the book was "published" by Boulevard though manufactured by Ace.

The real puzzle is how someone arranged for this to come out two months before the Ace edition. I checked the news archives but there were no announcements about this. The movie came out in May 1998. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:40, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

I paid a little more attention and I believe I figured it out. Image:D2NNSFN2002.jpg is the deleted image. It was uploaded by Bluesman on 3 March 2009 with the description "WOLLHEIM/GILBERT: DAW 30th Anniversary SF 1st hc." On 24 April 2011 Bluesman deleted it.

What's less clear is what publication ID D2NNSFN2002 was as that is not in use. Either it was a typo or it was a duplicate record. Bluesman did an OCLC/Worldcat verification of the publication the same day he deleted the D2NNSFN2002 image. --Marc Kupper|talk 00:05, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello P-Brane. The publication I verified is the 35th printing which was priced at $2.95. The other record is for an earlier printing, possibly the first printing - we don't know yet. We usually do one record per printing though I see someone updated the record I'd verfified to add that the 31st printing was also $2.95. I updated the record I had verified to change the date to 0000-00-00. It should not have been 1965-00-00.

If you look at the title record for Out of the Silent Planet you will see there are several Macmillan editions:

I scanned my cover to Image:TFTHSLNTPV1965.jpg. The painting is the same for all the covers. It looks like they changed from black to white lettering between the 21st and 22nd printing.

I also updated the publication record as I'd mistakenly called it a 35th printing above as the old notes were not clear as I had "31 to 35." The number line is "35 34 33 32 31".

The amazon page at http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/0020868804 has a couple of decent cover images including one at $2.50. I have a question regarding your verified Prince of Annwn 5th printing. The record shows "Pages: xii+179" however there are no roman numeral pages printed in the book. Shouldn't that be "Pages: [xii]+179" then? Also, the first line of content "On Evangeline Walton - And Magic" should have page [ix] (with the brackets), right? "The Broken Lands" Signature

Marc, in the Artists Signatures collection, you have a page for an "unknown" signature for Saberhagen's The Broken Lands. The signature is that of Jack Gaughan. But the book itself how says that the cover is by Richard Powers, says that his last name is signed on the cover (not your image), but does say that there is a title page illustration with Gaughan's initials (i.e. your image) on it. My guess is that this answers the question you were asking with that page, and that the page can probably be removed now. Or at the very least, updated. Chavey 14:56, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the extra notes you added. Usually when I've done the '+[5]' thing in the page count I also added a note explaining what was there such as blank pages, advertising, author bios, etc. I forgot the note and so removed the '+[5]' from the ISFDB record rather than hunting down where I stored my copy of the book. For a while I was working on documenting the physical structure of each publication. For example, the publisher reports this as a 368 page book and in this case we had 'xii+351+[5]' which adds up to 368 pages meaning the publisher's description was accurate and someone looking at the record could know exactly how many physical pages were in the work. I'm no longer doing this as it was extra work and seemed to be of little value to others looking at the records. --Marc Kupper|talk 18:15, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

R is for Rocket

I came across this, most likely your work. I own a copy of the 14th printing, so I updated the data for the 9th and 12th printings. A few remarks:

Some of the printings say "Printing date from copyright page of 14th printing". My copy explicitly states publication dates. Can I correct this?

You verified the 10th printing with a publication date of May 1971, source: the 14th printing. My copy gives the publication date of the 10th printing as August, 1970.

That ISFDB record for the 10th printing says the 1971-05-00 date is from the 14th printing but the ISFDB record for the 14th printing does not detail what the stated printing history is. I'm guessing that the sourcing to the 14th printing was done by someone else and I assumed it was correct. Data for the 7th printing are inconsistent. Yours states January 1969, mine sais February 1969.

That will be more problematic as I put a lot of books in a set of crates and now need to find which crate R is for Rocket is in. Let's go ahead with this fix and when I run across my copy I'll double check the date for the 7th printing. I've updated what appears to be an older Verification of yours. Platinum Pohl has been updated to include the Locus information (Price) in the actual database record. I've also removed the following note, since the question from 4+ years ago seems to me to be moot (shrug). "It's not clear from the ISFDB rules if the Copyright Acknowledgments section should be included in the page numbering. It is not listed in the table of contents. The last story ends on page 460. Pages 462 and 463 of the Copyright Acknowledgments are numbered." If you feel strongly that they should not belong at this point, we can easily remove them. Additionally, per the current standards, I believe this essay should be credited to 'uncredited' instead of Frenkel, but I defer to whatever you would prefer. I have similarly spruced up the next sentence "Following this is a single unnumbered page containing an About the Author section" to instead state "Following the copyright acknowledgments, there is a single unnumbered page containing an About the Author section." "Breed to Come", by Andre Norton

I'm verifying a copy of this book, for which you are now the primary verifier. The notes on that book, presumably from Harry/Dragoondelight say "©1972 No other statement of publication or printing". However, my copy (with all other data the same) says "First Ace Printing: September 1973". My cover is also slightly different than the one shown at the link above. The art is the same, but the label at the upper right says "An Ace Book" on my copy, but just "Ace" on that picture -- which means that my label comes down far enough to nearly reach the "E" in "Come". So it seems to me that there are two different printings here. My guess is that I have a 1st printing, and Harry had a 2nd printing. But I wanted to get other opinions before I made any comments in the pub record. Chavey 03:28, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

With Ace anything is possible. Usually any five-digit catalog # ending in '0' or '5' was a first printing, but if we have two with the same number, there's honestly no way to tell which might be the true first. I'd tend toward the one with an actual printing statement, of course. And there seem to be nine printings using only six catalog #s [07895-07900] so there are several duplications possible [though Ace did most of that in the early 80s, not the early 70s]. Regarding a Lewis Carroll Entry

I'm a neophyte at this site and recently I entered a 1923 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland into this site, but I ran into a glich. I entered the poem The Lobster-Quadrille from the text, all well and fine, but I can't merge my entry and yours without your say so. Yours is unhyphenated, my is. I suspect that my listing is the correct titling as I'm lifting the title right from the text of the novel. However, one of ours has to be listed as a variant. I've been told to contact you and ask if you can verify that yours has no hyphen. Nit-picking to be sure, but I've only been doing this for a couple of months and who am I to argue? Hi Marc, this morning I've come across several title records for G-Force jacket designs included as records for Interior Art, mostly (seemingly) created by yourself circa 2007 for various verified DAW pubs (eg. here and here). As the consensus these days seems to be for the jacket designer to be listed in the Note rather than have a separate title record wherever the cover artist is identified, would you have any objection to these credits being moved to the Notes when an editor finds them, and the title record removed from the verified pub (as I have done here, as an example)? You verified this book against a library copy, and there was a note there that said this was DAW Collectors 1151. That DAW number is also used by The Chanur Saga (May 2000). "Dragon and the Stars" is a 2010 publication, hence should have a DAW # of at least 1497. Sure enough, WorldCat lists it as DAW 1511, a simple typo from the number listed. DAW Collectors publication series

I and a couple of other editors are trying to formalize the DAW Collectors Books publication series. The consensus is that we should include only those publications that explicitly list their DAW number, either on the cover, the spine, or the copyright page. This applies to, apparently, all first editions and to some reprint editions, but not to most of the reprints. You have verified several DAW reprint editions where the notes list the DAW number. However, I can't tell from the wording in the notes whether this number is listed because (i) it was actually stated on the book; or (ii) the number was inherited from other editions with the DAW number listed. If you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could check these reprints and when they have the number actually listed, update the notes to reflect that. For example, adding "(on cover)" to a phrase like "DAW Collectors No. 123". The publications you've verified that fall into this scenario are:

Are you aware of the Publisher:DAW pages? I personally would not bother with creating a publisher series per the usual ISFDB rules stated at Template:PublicationFields:PubSeries plus Help:Screen:PublicationSeries as we'd be finessing a level of detail that does not seem to add value to ISFDB. The ISFDB publisher series is based on publications. The DAW collector numbers are a title-based value. DAW has stated the book number on reprints since around 1984 meaning from that point to the present the publisher series would include all publications (first hc and pb and all reprints).

You may want to see if there's consensus to special case the publication series field for DAW and to only include the first edition, which may be a hc or pb, of each title. That would give you one record per title much like what's on Publisher:DAW/Titles1.

If you look at a page such as Publisher:DAW/1-99 you'll see I've put a dash "-" in the "Book #" column for those publications that do not state the book number.

I'll go through your list above and double check the DAW #s. It'll motivate me to move all of the DAW books to one bookshelf. At present they are scattered throughout the house and finding the books has become difficult. --Marc Kupper|talk 17:01, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

I hadn't actually looked at the publisher page you mentioned. That page certainly does have an awful lot of useful information. But I'm not sure that eliminates the value of having the publication series, which was the conclusion of this discussion, although not everyone thinks it's necessary. Can you confirm the date given in this record? The ISBN, printing number, and price would indicate a 1976 printing, and it would be the same as this record. I would like to disambiguate two different publishers: Rizzoli and Rizzoli New York. This involves changing the publisher on three books from the New York company. These two publishers appear to be fundamentally different companies, although they are both branches of the conglomerate "RCS Media Group". Your copy of "Secret Lives of Authors" is the only verified book from Rizzoli New York, and I'm hopeful that you will agree with this disambiguation. (Or, of course, let me know if you do not.) I've put an overview of the situation, as I understand it, on the Rizzoli publisher page, with links to various relevant web pages if you wish to look at them. If, as I suspect, "Rizzoli New York" lists themselves on the title page as just "Rizzoli", this would be a useful note to add to the publisher page. Of course another obvious way to disambiguate them would be to use "Rizzoli (New York)", but since that company's web page lists themselves as "Rizzoli New York", that seemed to be the obvious name to use. The Sagebrush books appear in our system as by "Sagebrush Education Resources", "Rebound by Sagebrush", and just "Sagebrush", such as with this book. I would like to combine them under one publisher title. Since there is also a "Sagebrush Press" (although with no spec fic books yet), it seemed better to list them as "Sagebrush Education Resources". In general I tend to agree with Hervé, but in this case, there is no stated publication date in the book itself. So secondary sources are the only ones available to date this book, and the source that SFJuggler provides is the only one that's been found. (The editor who entered the original date of October 1968 didn't give a source at all.) Mhhutchins 19:28, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

There was another discussion that I can't spot at present on if we should add more precision when it's available from secondary sources. IIRC, it was that a if publication stated year-month and Amazon has year-month-day if we should use year-month-00 in the ISFDB record or the full yyyy-mm-dd available from Amazon. I've gone back and forth myself on the issue. For a long time I was in favor of including more precise information when a source was available and documented. More recently I have only gone by what's stated and only enter a note about the more precise date. It's not a strongly held opinion though.

Unrelated but I'd like to make it easy for the casual surfer to discover what is meant by terms such as "Catalog of Copyright", BLIC, LCCN. BLIC is on Sources of Bibliographic Information but not the other two.

I don't mind the change from 1968-10-00 to 1968-10-02 as the latter date is sourced.

However, the submitter is proposing to delete what I believe to be useful data from the notes. Here's the submission with a strikeout and the new material in red.
