Priorities

Ahasuerus’s comment in ISFDB:Community Portal#Pseudonyms about “web experts” made me realize it may be worthwhile to prioritize my isfdb time. At the moment I’m involved with

  • Cleaning up the DAW list with the initial goal being to fully merge my personal DAW list with what’s on isfdb so that I can give the spreadsheet to Don Erikson for physical verification and feedback.
  • Creating a site map so that I can better understand/explore isfdb.
  • Use isfdb to enter and/or verify my physical titles with a focus on the DAW list. I believe with even this narrow focus I’ll be hitting nearly every feature of isfdb as DAW has plenty of examples of title variants, pseudonyms, wildly obscure title formats, multiple overlapping series, etc.

What I’m wondering with going live by December coming up if I should put the DAW list on the back burner and I could either 1) jump into isfdb editing and or testing without taking a lot of time to do the site map, look at the db schema, and to fully understand it or 2) spend more time up front learning the system – that would include reading through and giving feedback to Mike Christie as he writes help pages. Ezines

Marc, I saw you approved Pagadan's submissions -- they looked like ezines to me, so I had left her a note on her talk page asking for more information about them. Are you familiar with the publications? I was thinking that we probably don't want to include material published on websites. Mike Christie (talk) 08:05, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)

I saw them late last night, and left them due to several problems, the worst being the date fields are messed up, resulting in all the titles having dates of 0000-00-00, labeling the interviews as NONFICTION, giving page numbers to an ezine (I guess it could happen, but only 1 story per page? If so, do page numbers have any meaning?). It took about a half hour and 25 edits to clean up, all for ezines I can't find anywhere on the web.
Perhaps we should require a persistent URL for ezines? If it's not persistent, then it's not interesting. I could go off and write 5 stories this morning and put them up on a blog someplace, but that doesn't mean we should index them (notoriety standards?). Without a URL, there is no way to verify that these stories actually exist. Alvonruff 09:14, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)
Well, Marc is on the West Coast and was up until 1am+ entering and approving data, so the bad submissions may have slipped by him. He also approved a couple of submissions by T. Jackson King which were generally OK, but needed a little TLC after the fact (all done now). I think it suggests that we really need a big red HOLD flag in the submissions screen :) Ahasuerus 09:42, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)

There was one entry where the date was formatted as YYYYMM-DD that I approved and then corrected the date on but I did not realize I had missed something else. re: eZines - I'll continue that thread on ISFDB:Community_Portal#Pagadan_and_ezines --Marc Kupper 13:18, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)
No worries, nothing major! Imagination was entered as a pulp and not a digest; a reprint of Weinbaum's Martian Odyssey was entered as first published in 1994 as opposed to 1934 (a universe where Weinbaum and not Williamson survived into his late 90s might be an interesting one); a French accent needed to be added to a Title as per the Notes field; another Title needed to be merged with a pre-existing Titles. None of it a showstopper and all of it eminently unnoticeable at 1am :) Ahasuerus 13:43, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)
My bitching isn't directed at Marc, I'm just having flashbacks to the 1990's editing problems of the ISFDB, whereby one person consumes tons of time for entries that have dubious relevance. I'm in for the hold button. Alvonruff 17:11, 26 Dec 2006 (CST)

Oceans of the Mind magazine

"I did some follow-up on this and it turns out the magazine itself does not fall within ISFDB's rules of acquisition (see item #12 at the bottom of the page)"

Marc - I was wondering if this magazine really falls into the category of e-zines that you want to exclude from isfdb. It is (or was) a quarterly PDF sent only to subscribers, and the editors contracted for first serial rights, so the editors are not actually contractually entitled to re-publish the material again in any of the ways mentioned in item no.12 (updated, revised, etc.), any more than a print magazine could re-publish an old issue with all of the stories in it.Sf 09:10, 23 Jan 2007 (CST)

First, Duh. Sorry for asking a question I could have answered easily myself. Secondly, the four items I removed from my edition of the subject were written after mine was published. The titles looked suspiciously unClarkeian, but after checking I found them.

Re:Frankenstein & Watt-Seppuku

Marc, Still learning my way around. The orig. isbn came up in red as bad sum check.I will clone the current listing & put the backcover isbn in, then change note to refer to good # on pub. page.Watt-Seppuku: Since the price was higher it could be 2nd printing, my copy is 1st. there is probably no 2nd printing but i see your point.I will bear this in mind in the future.Generaly on the hardcovers i don't note printings because the are usually 1st & would only note 2nd , does this seem like the way to proceed? Corum

Yes, I have been working on the Moorcock page. I've been working on Moorcock bibliographical stuff for many years and it is a big minefield. Filled with multiple revisions, retitling, titles reused.

The problem I'm trying to get around is that the Corum omnibus contain books in the corum series, but they're also part of the two definitive Tale of the Eternal Champion series. The US one (White Wolf) and the UK one (Millenium), both featured different omnibus in different orders. Both with different sets of revised texts. The Millennium ones were revised from the originals, and some of the White Wolf ones were further revisions.

So I've tried to approach it like this:

1) the original omnibus editions which basically represented one or two trilogies go as part of the corum series with their child titles, same with hawkmoon and history of the runestaff etc. 2) the millennium/orion editions get collected under the tales of... series with the UK ordering 3) the white wolf editions get collected under the tales of... series with the US order

I can't see a more logical way to represent the two as titles cannot be in more than one series. --Unapersson 12:35, 29 Jan 2007 (CST)

Optimising your signature

you are using a custom signature <span style="border: 1px solid rgb(250,0,255); border-bottom-style: none; padding: 0 2px 0 2px; white-space: nowrap;">[[User:Marc Kupper|Marc Kupper]] ([[User_talk:Marc Kupper|talk]])</span> → Marc Kupper (talk)

Could you change this to <span style="border: 1px solid #f0f; border-bottom: none; padding: 0 2px; white-space: nowrap">[[User:Marc Kupper|Marc Kupper]] ([[User talk:Marc Kupper|talk]])</span> (note the underscore) which AFAIK displays the same (Marc Kupper (talk)), but is shorter and leaves the source easier to view?

(Also, further shortening could be achieved by replacing the "white-space: nowrap" command with two &nsbsp; between the words of your signature - AFAIK/IIRC there's even a chance of using Unicode single-character nonbreakable space generated within Windows/MSIE environment by Alt+0160.)

P. S. Re #isfdb wiki related items above: A sandbox is not a special feature of a wiki installation, but just an ordinary page used for testing, which can be easily founded by anyone. However, footnotes (in the current Wikipedia REF-tag style; there are also the older wikipedia:Template:note and wikipedia:Template:ref which could easily be copied here) requires installing a special MediaWiki extension, and I'm not sure whether the current obsolete version of ISFDB MEdiawiki supports it and wouldn't have to be upgraded. --JVjr 10:24, 1 Mar 2007 (CST)

Writing here since I'm used to keep discussions in the place where they started, and so as to save my own talk page :-) I meant just the opposite, to use "User talk:Marc Kupper" with spaces and not underscores: the effect is the same, but it doesn't create a long unbreakable string in the source code (especially now in the combination with nbsp) so it linewraps more efficiently and may be even easier on eyes.
