"The Best Japanese Science Fiction Stories", by Martin Greenberg & John Apostolou

In your verified publication, two stories by Hanmura Ryo are listed in our record as by "Ryo Hammura". Could you verify that the "double-M" in Hammura is how it's actually listed? I can't find my copy at present though saw it a few weeks ago when I was sorting out the paperback collection. I can get both the Dembner and Barricade editions from my public library system and so have requested both.

Thanks for checking. I entered "Musubi no Yama Hiroku" based on the description in Wikipedia, plus info from WorldCat, but it would be nice to have an actual verification. SFE, Wikipedia, and WorldCat all spell his name "Hanmura", but with variations of "Ryo" and the orderings of the two names. Chavey 05:32, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Two of the books came in.

• The Barricade Books edition of The Best Japanese Science Fiction Stories uses "Ryo Hanmura" consistently. I'll do a transient verification this weekend.
• Unfortunately, I was not paying attention and did not realize the library copy of Musubi no Yama Hiroku is a Japanese language edition meaning I got "産霊山秘録" by 半村 良 published by 角川文庫 (Kadokawa bunko) in what looks like April 1978. 528 pages in a pb size hardcover. Canonical name

I'm thinking the canonical name for the author should be Ryo Hanmura and not Hanmura Ryo. The Japanese convention is to use the last name first. A Japanese language publication will have 半村 (Hanmura) followed by 良 (Ryo). Romanji is a writing system that uses English letters to spell out how Japanese words should be pronounced. It was developed so that missionaries could read to Japanese audiences. Thus, a Romanji work intended to be read to Japanese listeners would use "Hanmura Ryo" as that's the naming convention the Japanese expect and use. The western convention is First-name Last-name meaning a translator of a work to English usually flips the names around so that they read as "Ryo Hanmura".

In looking at Hanmura's Summary Bibliography the bulk of the titles are in the Kanpon yōseiden series. All of the titles/publications in this series are Japanese language works. There are no English translations. The Romanji titles used on ISFDB come from secondary sources. One puzzle is that all of the sources used to construct this series state the author name as Ryō Hanmura, not "Hanmura Ryo." I'm wondering if someone renamed 13542.

All of those titles were entered by me. I did not necessarily view the sources as authoritative regarding the romanization of the name, e.g. since they disagreed on both "Ryō" vs. "Ryo" and on the ordering of the names: Wikipedia and WorldCat put "Hanmura" last, but SFE puts "Hanmura" first. Since I wasn't sure, I just used the canonical name we already had listed. But that should not be used as evidence in favor of that variant of the name. However, the Help screens are very adamant that authors' names should be entered "exactly as they are entered in the publication" (emphasis theirs), and that includes the order of personal name vs. family name. That seems to extend to the choice of canonical names as well. I just spot checked some Hungarian authors, who also use Family_Name Personal_Name ordering, and all the ones I found had the canonical name listed in that ordering (e.g. Szepes Maria.) It doesn't seem to have made it into the Help screens, but this discussion seems to be the basis for that conclusion. That would imply that the canonical name should be either "Hanmura Ryō" or "Hanmura Ryo". Chavey 10:26, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Template:AuthorFields:CanonicalName is silent on the order. The discussion thread you found seems to be more about how to handle the legal name field.

Mr. Hanmura's "most recognized name" in Japan seems to be 半村 良. I'd lean towards using Ryō Hanmura on ISFDB as the "most recognized name" for the English world as that's what Wikipedia uses. Wikipedia tries to use the most widely recognized name in their article titles. Unfortunately, Mr. Hanmura is not well known, particularly outside Japan, meaning his article has not received a lot of scrutiny.

Ultimately, the canonical name used at the author level can be whatever we decide. The publication records need to match what's stated and also need to get filed under title records where the author names match. If needed, you variant title the title records to title records that match the canonical name.

Usually we go by a subjective "most recognized name" standard to decide on the canonical name. If there does not seem to be a "most recognized name" name we use the name that has the most published titles, mainly to reduce the number of variant titles. Brian W. Aldiss is an example of someone with quite a bit of work using the name "Brian Aldiss".

It appears that translators of Hungarian works were consistent in using the "Last First" form of the author names in the translated works. That gave us a "most recognized name" standard to use on ISFDB.

In the case of Mr. Hanmura, it's all over the map as publications have used Ryō Hanmura, Ryo Hanmura, Hanmura Ryo, and Hanmura Ryō. There's very little translated work that would have helped to set a standard.

It's getting late here but I'd want to look at site:www.isfdb.org Birthplace Japan to see if a pattern has developed on ISFDB. I don't think I'll have much time for ISFDB this coming weekend and so may defer the project until next week. --Marc Kupper|talk 09:01, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

I don't have a strong opinion for using Ryō Hanmura vs. Ryo Hanmura. The difference is because there are several Romanji systems. Some of them use "o" and the others "ō" for the same sound. An "o" is easier for me to type. :-) The author's Wikipedia article uses Ryō Hanmura. Wikipedia's choice of "Ryō" comes from a combination of MOS Japan-related articles Romanization and MOS Japan-related articles#Names and product titles. --Marc Kupper|talk 04:16, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I went ahead with the first fix which was to make the name Ryō Hanmura. In doing this I found that title records used Ryō and not Ryō. Those look exactly the same but are not. The first is Ryō and the latter is Ryō ̄ is a U+0304 (Combining macron) meaning it backspaces to the previous character and slaps a macron over it. ō is a U+014D (Latin small letter O with macron). I fixed the title record to use ō.

Title / Publication author credit mismatch

The author of this publication doesn't match the author of the title record. It will have to be unmerged, creating its own title record, which can then be varianted to the canonical author credit. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:27, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I had seen there was a mismatch but did not think it created a problem. The publication record had a link to back to the title and the title record listed the publication. It seemed to be displaying things correctly. It used be that publications were linked to title records by matching the titles. At some point a "container title" field was added to the publication record. It points back to the title record using its record number meaning the titles can differ.

The database requires that the author of the publication record match exactly the author credit of the title record. Otherwise, a pseudonym and variant must be created (unless a matching variant title already exists in the database.) Mhhutchins 04:55, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I'd also like to replace your cover image, the price and catalogue number do not appear to be from this copy. DAW Tough Guide to Fantasyland

Hi, Marc. Previously I have two contributions to the database (two edits only), none here.

I have in hand a copy of DWJones, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?102700.

DAW Books edition, ISBN matches only one record now in the database http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?301419 but I find (a) no date except 1996 copyright, (b) no printing number, (c) no price, (d) no explicit notice of Science Fiction Book Club but "01960" does appear on dustjacket (back, lower right corner). A local library decal covers the logo(?) at bottom of spine.

The last non-blank page would be number 302 but the numbers end at 299. The last three pages --one page each for X, Y, Z-- are not numbered.

Regarding your main note on the interior illustrations, with four subpoints:

• p. 85 and 155 (flipped): lettering under tail is mirror at p. 85, normal at p. 155, but the lettering is almost clear and nearly readable at p. 85 only --as if p. 85 with mirror lettering were original and p. 155 an imperfect copy. As mirrored I think I see first letter Y, last two letters E and D. Except for the last letter that seems D, the word might be Bestiary or February.

Seven letters, not eight. One by one they look to me most like DEDIAMV. The first two alone seem clear, the last clearly V or Y.

• p. 95: "J.W.", i agree --but this is page 92

It seems to be signed also on the left border, "JCM" or "HM" (no dots) where J or the left half of H is very light as if the engraving were too shallow there, or not inked.

• p. 104: perhaps "DiFate" is cut off at lower right but there is a complete signature at lower left, looks like "J. W. Wood" --do you really have unreadable caption? there is no hint of a caption here, where the fish is almost flushbottom on the page

Looks more like "J. W. Wiod" where 'i' is iota slightly below the line. The manuscript at lower right is too long for "DiFate" and does not clearly end with numerals.

• p. 222: "ANON", i agree

Not clear but probable in this context. Not clearly uppercase (as I first thought) or lowercase. I have not looked closely at any other illustrations, yet.

I will try to remember to look for a magnifying glass at home tonight.

• There may be scribbled signatures pp. 66, 94, or 282. P66, low on left border behind soldier's right calf running 8:00 to 2:00. P94, low on left border beside spy's right knee; if these were my notes from some lecture on a serious subject I would guess "Marx". P282, middle of left border, beside right elbow.

It appears you can use the record at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?301419. Some older ISFDB records often contain data where we failed to note the source. In this case I would add a note explaining:

• The publication has (a) no date except 1996 copyright, (b) no printing number, (c) no price, (d) no explicit notice of Science Fiction Book Club but "01960" does appear on dustjacket (back, lower right corner)
• Prior to primary verification this ISFDB publication record reported a date of 1999-02-00 and the price $9.98. Neither of these are stated in the publication. The source for 1999-02-00 and $9.98 is unknown but is assumed to be reliable.

I leave the 1999-02-00 and $9.98 values in the record and change the page count to 299. The reason for handling the page count differently is that ISFDB uses different rules for counting pages than publishers. A publisher nearly always reports the physical page count and they include the preliminary matter (title page, copyright page) and the blank or advertising pages at the end in their count. The odds are high that 1999-02-00, $9.98, and 302 pages are from an SFBC order form. As the counting rules are different and we don't know for sure the source for "302 pages" I usually almost never add a note about that the record used to show the page count as 302. Sometimes I have included a note that the last numbered page is 299 and is followed by three blank pages.

I can't find my copy at the moment to double check it against your comments. I'll take a look for it, particularly to confirm my comment about the caption on page 104 and to double-check to see if the second illustration is on page 95 vs 92. --Marc Kupper|talk 14:15, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

One point must have been unclear. Printed page numbers run to 299 on the last W page. There are three more printed pages --one each for X, Y, and Z-- that should be numbered 300 to 302 for consistency. --User talk:Pwendt Pwendt 21:42, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

I have the same copy out of the same library again. The difference here is that User:Willem H. (who interjects above) has primary verified the record with its "publ date and price unknown". Beside what I reported previously,

• The map on pages 6-7 http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Publication:THTGHGDTFN1998 (to whose discussion neither I nor anyone else has yet contributed) and signature match those in this copy of the book except: the gutter is located at about 45% from left to right in the image; at the midpoint of the map in the book.
• The year 1999, media hc, and ISBN 1-56865-951-2, do not match what we have compiled for the Daw Collectors series http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pubseries.cgi?1544; namely 1998, pb, 0-88677-832-8.

"Burn" by James Patrick Kelly

Hi. I just saw that your primary verfied publication of "Burn" by James Patrick Kelly contains a NOVELLA "Burn" and a NOVEL "Burn", both in just 178 pages. Is it possible that the NOVEL "Burn" is a wrong entry and should be deleted? I haven't found any information that the novella was expanded into a novel subsequently. I sampled a few pages and came up with a word count of 40,000. Based on that I changed the novel to a chapbook containing the novella of the same name. Initially I was not sure if the reprints were abridged. The publication is 8.25" by 5.375" which is larger than a paperback and is 178 pages. They padded it out by using a slightly larger font, spacing the lines apart, and slightly wider margins. --Marc Kupper|talk 21:58, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

King's Bazaar

Re this record: It is ISFDB policy (may not actually be stated) that records shouldn't be created for works with publication dates beyond 90 days. Anything beyond that should be handled with caution, and probably be entered with a publication date of 9999 which is displayed as "Forthcoming". There are too many factors that could cause the data to change in a book scheduled for publication seven months away. Also, it has an ISBN-10 which should be changed to the ISBN-13. (This is what brought the record to my attention when it showed up on a clean-up report.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 06:13, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks - what happened was I was verifying a publication that had a short story. The Wikipedia article for that story mentioned that it was also published in King's Bazaar and Wikpedia already had an article at The Bazaar of Bad Dreams for the collection. I suspect had it been a lesser known author the article would have been deleted as being speculation about a future event. I went ahead with adding it to ISFDB. I wondered if 2015-11-03 was too far in the future but used it as it's a Stephen King collection. It seemed unlikely the publishers would change the date as the author only needs to write three new stories. I was surprised the cover art was not available yet and that gave me pause on if I should use 2015-11-03. I have changed the publication and title records to use 9999-00-00.

9999-00-00 is not mentioned on Template:PublicationFields:Year nor does that page mention anything about 90 days. If 90 days has been agreed on then I suspect we should have a moderator warning that also shows how many days in the future the date is.

Thank you for the reminder on the piped numbers. I recall reading about that when it was added but never thought I'd use the feature as 99% of the time I only edit ISFDB when I have the publication in hand and so forgot about it. I fixed the publication record to use pipes.

Good catch on the ISBN-10. I assume you already fixed it as the record has 978-1-5011-1167-9. I checked the publisher's April 2015 books and they only have ISBN-13s on the copyright page. --Marc Kupper|talk 20:50, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

I have changed the cover art credit for your verified Mysteria from 'Phil Hefferman' to 'Phil Heffernan'. Normally I'd wait for confirmation from the primary verifier, but Amazon Look Inside has a scan of the verified version (vice a later ebook version) and the copyright page shows the credit as Heffernan so it seems pretty clearly a database typo. You and I both verified this 5th printing of the pb edition, with an unknown publication date. The list of publications in the front of the book implies that this was most likely published in 1995 (see publication notes for details), so I entered that as a publication date for it. I started Rules and standards discussions#Publication/title dates and future publications as I did not see anything in the existing rules about three months.

I added a reminder-thing to myself to check up on the publication and Amazon in a few months to see if they are still on target. It's a planned reprint though I don't know if that improves or lowers the chance of RandomHouse ever releasing it. Besides individual titles they have been reprinting that author's books in collections of three and so far have released three collections with another coming up in October. There was fifth collection planned for January 1, 2035 (20 years from now!) but between last night and today the publisher deleted it.

:-) I had assumed it showed up on a report of pubs/titles more than three months out. That brings up a point in that the data entry front end and/or moderator interface could be checking the ISBN length vs. the date and warning people. I've accidentally entered ISBN10s a couple of times now when entering data from Amazon. Is there a tool available to automatically generate and insert a new-publication record based on an ISBN or ASIN? Default display of non-English translations

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Currently only English translations are displayed for unauthenticated users. The proposal would change it to displaying all translations. The downside is that the Summary page could get longer and harder to navigate.

Thanks, I had wondered about that earlier today. At the time I looked the help was silent on if adding the country is required but now I need to find that help page. The hover-text and Template:AuthorFields:BirthPlace for edit-author seem clear enough. When I looked earlier today I was looking at a page that suggested the order of things but did not say if "Los Angles, California" was sufficient or if I should add ", USA" to that. Dragonflight seventh printing

Re this record: It appears to be a duplicate of a verified August 1976 printing, except that the publication date of yours is given as August 1978. We have a record for an October 1977 tenth printing with a different ISBN and price. So it's not likely that they went back to a price and ISBN issued in 1976 for a 1978 printing (not to mention the printing number discrepancy.) Thanks for checking. Template:PublicationInfo:WhatToInclude is silent on how to best credit "About the Author" style essays but that's fine with me. I had been crediting the person it was about as that would make it far easier to track down the "About" essays for a given person. I don't have a strong opinion about doing it that way or using "uncredited" which better follows a by-the-book reading of the help pages on how to do things.

Time at the Top, Peggy/Peggie Bach

Hi, Marc. (Regarding Earthsea immediately above i will have transient access again for a few days after Christmas and tie up loose ends then, i hope.)

For a 1982 edition of Time at the Top by Ormondroyd Publ Record # 233049 you verify interior artwork Peggy Bach and also a closing essay "About the Illustrator". The image we display is not the original cover probably by Bach. I wonder whether the displayed image is the cover of your copy and is uncredited?

More important, for a 1986 edition Nihonjoe gives cover artist Peggie Bach Publ Record # 518125 (no mention of interior illustrations and I did not ask). Does your book clearly spell the name "Peggy"? Check title page and About the Illustrator if you can find the book. Both names are in the database only as Time at the Top interior and cover illustrators respectively. The Library of Congress (which never credits cover or jacket illustrations) credits "illus. by Peggie Bach" LCCN 63010140 but that name is not digitized and does not otherwise appear in its online catalog. Yes, the displayed image is a scan of my copy. I'm pretty sure Peggie Bach did not do the cover for my copy of the story as the illustrations were done in 1963 and the cover in 1982.

I found an Abebooks seller listing for a copy of the 6th printing of the Parnassus Press edition and so created ISFDB publication record 551227. That edition has what I assume is a Peggie Bach cover.

Regarding that Nihonjoe verification. Amazon has a cover at http://www.amazon.com/dp/0553154206 which is a different cover than either my Bantam printing and the Parnassus Press edition. I would check with Nihonjoe on if the cover matches what's on Amazon, what I have, Parnassus Press, etc. I would have him provide more detail on the exact wording of the artist credit. Thanks for the reminder about the pipes as I'd forgotten about that. I ended up using |0.5 and |0.8 for the page numbers as both are before page 1 and none of the 12 preliminary matter pages are numbered.

The title page was not uploaded "for the sole purpose of displaying the art work." While the statement provided by Template:Illustration Image Data appeared adequate for a fair-use usage of the image I have the updated the description on Image:THMRTNVDNC0000-title-page.jpg to provide a better explanation for why that image was uploaded. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Marc Kupper (talk • contribs) .

Still not a sufficient reason in my opinion. The same rationale (to aid in comparison) could be used to upload any interior art to the ISFDB server. Something we'd both agree would not be a "good thing". Mhhutchins|talk 07:48, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

What's the difference between interior art and the cover? Both are usually copyright images. With both the main purpose for our uploads are to help in identifying or distinguishing editions and for documenting publisher logos, prices, etc. There have been times where I wondered if a particular interior drawing was used in another publication and it would be great if we had more of them online so that people could pull up copies of the image to verify if it's a match or not. In this case I got a sense that many of the editions from other publishers of The Martian are using at least the same map and some seem to be using the same title page background. I was also dealing with that the art credit was vague it did not say where in the book the guy's work appeared. Some European editions seem to have the same interior artwork but failed to credit it meaning someone verifying one of those would need to see the images in a credited USA edition to see if the image is the same and to use the USA edition as the secondary credit source.

The image I uploaded is a grayscale that uses 205 colors. I found I can cut it down to 16 colors and the Mars part is indistinguishable from the 205 color version though the black area below Mars has some artifacts. The file size is larger as I suspect the color depth reduction system compensated by making some edges fuzzy to create the illusion of more colors.

It turns out there are 11 different Amazon Look Insides available for this title. Most of them don't have the title page but I found one that did. I need to be up early in the morning and so when I get up I'll delete the image I uploaded and add an explanation/link to the Look Inside that has this image. --Marc Kupper|talk 08:13, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

The Skeptical Inquirer

This publication record doesn't qualify for database eligibility. Non-genre magazines, i.e. non-spec-fic magazines, must contain at least one work of fiction, and only that fiction content can be added to the database. (Policy and entry standards here.) Allowing this record into the database would open the door to thousands of publications which contain nonfiction work by spec-fic authors. The fact that this publication reprints an essay originally published in a genre magazine makes it even less likely to be allowed, even if we broke the rules to do so. Bug 611 List of title types creeated by 'Add Title' in Edit Pub doesn't include EDITOR

I see that you left the following comment earlier today:

I thought that omission was by design. EDITOR records are only used in the metadata section of a publication record. Why would we have an editor record in the Contents section of a publication record?

As I wrote when container editing was last tweaked:

...editors can now select "EDITOR" in the Content section of Edit Pub. It was originally removed from the drop-down list because new editors often thought that "EDITOR" stood for "editorial". Now it is back in order to support the ability to edit container titles within Edit Pub. It should be relatively harmless because we have a nightly report that finds improperly entered EDITOR titles.

It's quite useful when changing ANTHOLOGY's or Fixer-submitted NOVELs to MAGAZINEs/FANZINEs. However, the change that I made was incomplete. It affected the drop-down lists associated with Content titles displayed by the Python script when the page is first sent to the browser. However, it didn't update the JavaScript logic that adds new Content titles, so now the two are out of sync. Bug 611 was created to address this issue.

Also, could you please respond to Michael's query immediately above? I believe it's very important for all editors, especially moderators, to be on the same page re: what's in and what's out. If we don't interpret the rules in the same way, we will end up deleting each other's work and that could cause editors to drop out. Ahasuerus 03:35, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I have a note on the record for The Farther Shore that you linked to that says "The cover art is copyright 1984 by Yvonne Gilbert." None of the Tehanu covers match the The Farther Shore painting nor are there any by John Jude Palencar for either Tehanu nor The Farther Shore.

There is some evidence that a cover art credit may be wrong as [8] and [9] The Farthest Shore credit Yvonne Gilbert but show different paintings than the record I have.

Fortunately, my copy it's in the same storage box as The Farther Shore. I'll see if I can find the box and if my copy credits Palencar anywhere. We will need something that we can cite that seems more reliable than "Susan O'Fearna has an old calendar." :-) Does the calendar only have Palencar paintings? What year is it for? Does it identify which book(s) the paintings appeared in? One thought is from the John Jude Palencar bibliography page that you can click on Bibliographic Comments and and to add a section that documents this calendar as a source. Use the same fields/layout as a publication record meaning we'd have a title, author, date, publisher, etc. You would be the "primary verifier" of the calendar. I assume it has 12 or 13 paintings. If the artist e-mailed you and confirmed that specific (or all) the paintings are his then we can add that to the page. Rather than scanning and uploading the "interior art" we should be able to use existing cover images to show that, for example, July's painting is the one that was used on Tombs of Atuan, August is The Farther Shore, etc. On the publication records that have the Palencar paintings but credit Yvonne Gilbert we will change the credit to John Jude Palencar and to explain how the calendar is the source for the credit. --Marc Kupper|talk 16:14, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Bradbury's Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed chapbook

Marc, a few queries about this pub, as the data entry standards may have changed since you verified it in 2009. We appear to have the same printing (matching ISBN, undated 2nd printing of the March 1991 edition), although mine is certainly a pb, not a hc as stated. You have the publisher as "Writers' Voices / Signal Hill", although "Writers' Voices" appears to be a pub series and not an imprint as per the data provided on the chapbook's last page, and the first printing also has "Writers' Voices" as a pub series. The title as it appears on page 13 keeps the comma after "Were" and therefore is not a variant, and the comma also appears on the title page of the chapbook, the full title being "Selected from Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed" which is also on the front cover and spine. Also visible is "Design: Paul Davis Studio © 1991" alongside the spine on the back cover, yet the note states there is no credit for the cover artist. I propose making these changes if you agree we have the same edition, and I also have a cover to upload (the design is a of large eye with a family in silhouette). What do you think? I'm looking for my copy. I see a pub note about "While the binding is listed as 'hc' this is a pb size publication with a perma-bound cover which has stiff boards with the jacket pasted on and laminated." I decided it's a pb rebound as a 'hc' and so revised the note and changed the binding on the record to 'pb'. I also updated the publisher name.

"Design: Paul Davis Studio © 1991" is a cover design credit and not a cover art credit. These days what I do is I leave the artist field blank but document the cover design credit in the notes.

The structure is a graphic (comic book style) story by an author and illustrated by Charles Vess that's loosely based on a ballad or poem. I looked through the submissions and found that Kevin Pulliam (user:Kpulliam) was the one that did much of the initial work on the images. For the 1st ed. P304191 I submit change to "E. Hering", following the original serial publication, both Contents of the volume as bound and each illustration "Drawn by E. Hering"; see the headpiece, p65, or p69 with signature "HERING", clearly, altho "E" may be "CE" or "LE".

Ahasuerus has determined that we need to put some fairly tight constraints on the html features that users can embed inside notes, because there are too many places where hackers can use html for nefarious purposes when full html entry is allowed. Details of these limitations are on the Community Portal. In particular, he's no longer going to allow the "img" tag, which you used extensively for the Shadowmarch Illustrations series. To clean these up, he suggested that I replace the "img" tags with regular links, which I have done. That means that the images aren't directly on the InteriorArt record pages, but they are accessible with a single click. A batch of nongenre stories - if you disagree please comment

Currently there are numerous non-genre horror stories that are in the database because it's natural to just enter a book of horror or "tales of terror" without figuring out which stories are supernatural. I don't intend to systematically hunt for them, but when I spot one, I like to mark it nongenre. (In the case of classic stories, marking is better than removing it from the database because it'll just get re-added with some new anthology.) At the moment, I've spotted the following stories that I think need such a change, and I'm consulting people who have them in their verified pubs.

Firstly, there's Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (verified copies: (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)), which contains "A Terribly Strange Bed," "The Three Strangers," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Leiningen Versus the Ants," "A Rose for Emily," "Taboo," and undoubtedly other non-supernatural ones that I'm not noticing at the moment. "The Matisse Stories", by A. S. Byatt

Your verified publication lists the contents in the notes, and suggests that they may all be non-genre. I read the review of the book in Kirkus Reviews and the extended review in the New York Times and I am convinced that none of these stories are genre. A.S. Byatt is above the threshold, IMO, so we should still include this book, but I have marked this collection as non-genre. I added the contents to all the other publications, and labelled these three stories as non-genre, but left your publication unchanged (except for adding two OCLC links), but I invite you to import those contents to your publication as well. "Between Two Worlds / Messages Found in an Oxygen", by Terry Carr & Bob Shaw

I don't know if you were the person who entered the comment, on your verified publication, that the contents (2 collections, but without the stories in those collections) were set up "to allow the pagination for the Terry Carr and Bob Shaw sides of the dos-à-dos to be set up". But I went ahead and set those up, by importing the stories for those collections. (Also, to fix a cleanup report complaint). I don't think there's any decent way to include the page numbers of the two halves without the system shuffling them all together, but I did enter them in such a was as to guarantee an ordering consistent with the separate volumes, and the internal ordering of the stories. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chavey (talk • contribs) 21:51, 4 June 2017.

Thank you. Yes, that's my note. I think at the time ISFDB did not have the |### feature for adding page numbers. I'm not sure why you said "I don't think there's any decent way to include the page numbers of the two halves without the system shuffling them all together". You did everything right other than you did not put the page numbers in front of the |### things. I went ahead and did that. The system displays the number in front of the | and uses the number after the | for sorting the list of titles.

This one still needs more cleanup. Technically it's an anthology that is constructed as pair of dos-a-dos collections. At the time I added it to ISFDB I entered it as an omnibus of two collections meaning there were three pub records for a single book. The goals were to make sure the thing showed up on Terry Carr's and Bob Shaw's bibliographies, and to show the two tables of contents sorted in order.

I need to coordinate changing the Between Two Worlds / Messages Found in an Oxygen pub record with the other verifiers as the stories are now now all contained in the pub record.

• I changed the pub type from omnibus to collection. Technically it's an anthology but using 'collection' on ISFDB gets us less astonishing results.
• I added an Acknowledgments essay to ISFDB that's on page viii of the Between Two Worlds side. I must have missed this back when I did the 2007 PV. The essay ends with "Andy Cowan, Editor" over "Marlboro, MA" over "June 1986". I also added a pub note about this.
• I corrected a typo in an existing pub note "... add that the 255 slipcased copies were ..." was changed to "... add that the 225 slipcased copies were ..."
• I moved the "OCLC <a href="http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/19101840">19101840</a>" pub note into into the external links thing.

We need to:

• Delete the now no longer needed title, publication records, and the front cover records.
  • Delete pub Between Two Worlds
  • Delete pub Messages Found in an Oxygen Bottle
  • Delete title Between Two Worlds
  • Delete title Messages Found in an Oxygen Bottle
  • Delete cover image Image:BTWNTWWRLD1986.jpg which is for the Between Two Worlds side.

Between Two Worlds / Messages Found in an Oxygen Bottle has an editor, Andy Cowan, who worked for the New England Science Fiction Association (NESFA). Terry Carr and Bob Shaw were to be the guests of honor at the 1986 ConFederation hosted by the NESFA. In preparation for this the NESFA contracted with both authors for some short stories plus secured reprint rights to other stories. Both authors also wrote introductions. The book was available for sale at the 1986 ConFederation.

If we made the publication an anthology then technically, Andy Cowan is the editor and the publication would vanish from the two author's bibliographies. This was the astonishing result I was trying to avoid.

However, your idea of making it an anthology "edited" by the two authors much like Systems of Romance has some merit. Terry Carr's introduction reveals that he was involved in the story selection and arranging process, at least for his side of the publication. While he mentions Bob Shaw in his introduction he did not write about Messages Found in an Oxygen Bottle nor any of Bob Shaw's stories. Bob Shaw chose to write an "in universe" introduction for people at the convention and does not mention how the stories were selected and organized other than as "they were written as labours of love, without thought of material reward, for the sheer joy of their inherent fannishness." Bob Shaw did not mention Terry Carr nor Between Two Worlds in his introduction.

I had leaned towards classifying it as a pair of collections as that's what the thing looks like. I'm in the process of correcting Karel Čapek's last name from Capek to Čapek. In nearly all cases we had his name incorrectly listed without the hachek over the C. I've gone ahead and changed the title record for the stories "The Misadventures of a Matrimonial Swindler" and "Mr. Havlena's Verdict", both of which are included in your verified copy of Tall Short Stories. Could you check your copy to see if how his name appears in the book. If it is Čapek, then nothing further needs to be done. Otherwise, we'll need to create a new titles with the pseudonym Capek. HTML tables problem

In the process of forbidding html tags that can be used to break the system, Ahasuerus is moving things towards disallowing some of the tags that several of us (you and I included) had become used to. In particular, we can no longer use attributes in things such as our table commands. We can use <table>, but only without things like <table style="border: thin solid;"> or <td align=center>. Thus we can use plain, simple <table>, <tr>, and <td>, but nothing more sophisticated than that. The cleanup report that searches for html problems has, over the last few months, been scrubbed free of almost all of the html attributes that Ahasuerus expects to ban, except for 11 publications that have tables you entered. These have to be converted to other formats that abide by the upcoming html security standards. If you wish, I can do those conversions for you. But since you were the one who first put those tables in, it seems likely that you may prefer to do this yourself, so the final result comes as close as possible to your vision of how that data should be presented. Thank you for the heads up. I cleaned up all of the remaining items on the Mismatched HTML tags in Publication Notes report. The item that's most painful is the loss of align="right". align="center", style="text-align: center;", and style="font-style:italic;" were easy to replace with <center> (which is deprecated but still works for now) and <i>. I did not want to get into padding with &nbsp; to right-align stuff knowing the right edge will never be perfectly lined up on all devices. The intent of right alignment was to make things easy on the eye and mind to read while also duplicating how something was formatted in a publication. Talking Leaves

Back in 2010, you added a bibliographic comment to Talking Leaves stating that you intended to read the whole thing and decide which ones were speculative. Well, I've done that now. Here's what I found:

1. Two stories that you added, "The Humming of Stars and Bees and Waves" and "Aunt Parnetta's Electric Blisters" are definitely speculative.

2. Two stories currently in the contents aren't speculative; I marked them non-genre and added synopses to explain why they aren't. They should stay in the database anyway, though, for other reasons: "Going Home" is by Joseph Bruchac who's done a lot of genre work, and "How I Got to Be Queen" is in the anthology Wild Women which is indexed by Locus.

3. There are eight other stories which I think are speculative and should be added: "Deer Woman," "Turtle Lake," "The Flood," "A Seat in the Garden," "Crow's Sun," "from Cheyenne Revenge," "Bicenti," and "from Fools Crow."

I reviewed the submissions log and discovered I was the one that added the three essays. The one you could not find was on the back side of the page containing the "About the Illustrator" essay. I then did a second pass where I changed the title of the third essay from:

"Credits (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)" to

"(untitled credits/acknowledgements) (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)"

The implication is that I was looking at the page and saw that it was not titled "Credits".

Thus there are two mysteries. 1) Why did I verify the publication at x+759+[10] pages and yet entered the additional essays as being on pages 567-570. 2) I seemed to have spotted and added an essay that's not in your copy? I'm wondering if perhaps I added the three essays based on some another of the Harry Potter books

I need to track down my copies. In my notes I have both:

• 7th printing, Feb-1978, 0-345-27697-3 at $1.75 (I got this one in 2006 but never did an ISFDB verification of it)
• printing not checked, Feb-1978, 0-345-28868-8 at $1.75 (I got this one in 2010) and in my notes linked it to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?308074 which is the record you are asking about.

What bothers me is that my normal practice is to first enter all of the info into an Excel spreadsheet. I then hunt down the ISFDB record and make sure its data matches both what I entered and the publication. Thus there's a double check of the data. For the second of the two books I still have a "-" in the printing number field implying I got interrupted before entering the printing number. When a book does not have a printing # I enter n.p. in that field.

Two years after I verified the publication another user, rtrace, added the cover image. As it's 600px I assume that person scanned a copy they had in hand. That person did not seem to notice their copy had 27697 on the front cover but added it to a record for 0-345-28868-8. They likely were only looking at the price and/or printing number.

Thus it seems like a toss up between keeping the record as 0-345-28868-8 or changing it to either 27697 and/or 0-345-27697-3.

As you and rtrace both have 27697 I decided to change the record as you proposed but also added a note. I have a copy of 27697 too and so my 2010 verification still works for that one. I now need to find my copy of 0-345-28868-8. --Marc Kupper 20:47, 24 January 2018 (EST)

Hi. You verified a copy of this collection, date unknown P273218. I created a record for the 1st ed. relying on library records as "[1952]" and publisher adverts in 1950s newspapers. (I do not take "Collectors' and Gift Editions" to be a publication series in our sense, with Series #11 and Series #14 for this title in 1952 and 1953- respectively. Perhaps heading and number only for the purpose of organizing the newspaper ads and orders from them.)

Concerning the contents list, I wonder

1. Is placement of some in series Alice is your work and based on notes in the book, or recognition of the titles. If the collection identifies all of them by source in one of the Carroll novels (as the long subtitle suggests) then the others can be placed in series Sylvie and Bruno.
2. Is "unknown" (date 0000 inherited from the collection as entered?) used here in deference to possible publication of some prior to their appearance in one of the Carroll novels? Or concerning the first use of the particular titles listed here?
3. Do all of the poem titles appear in the book as listed here, or do "How Doth..." and so one represent the first words of poems untitled here?

Another OCLC[15] gives [197-], or 1970s, and notes "Date of printing suggested by WorldCat."(!)

By the way, do you know whether this is a colophon or printer's colophon, or that term implies a pictorial element, as in a logo?

Verified Publishing Names project

I was digging around looking to see if any background research had been done on dating Ace books and found several wiki pages related to the Verified Publishing Names project. It looks to have died about 2010 and isn't on the list of current (or archived) Bibliographic Projects in Progress. Anything come of this project? Is it a reasonable forum a shared project or id it not go beyond the 3 or 4 of you? ../Doug H 10:24, 11 August 2020 (EDT)

My main conclusions that came about from this now dead project are that details in the publisher name are not important to the general ISFDB population and that adding details to publication records imposes a burden on future verifiers.

For example, I have a publication in hand that states "Farrar Straus Giroux" on the title and copyright pages. On ISFDB there are 14 publishers that include "Giroux" in their name. 13 of the records use "Farrar, Straus and Giroux" and one of them uses "Farrar, Straus & Giroux". Do I have a one-off in hand where the publisher used "Farrar Straus Giroux" or have ISFDB editors been accepting "Farrar, Straus and Giroux" as close-enough to the what's stated in their publication in hand that they went with what was already on ISFDB? These were the sort of details that the Verified Publishing Names project attempted to pin down to reliable and verifiable sources.

This publication in hand gets messier in that the title page has the Square Fish logo over "Square" over "Fish" over "Farrar Straus Giroux". The copyright page has:

• Square Fish logo over "Square" over "Fish" over "An Imprint of Macmillan"
• "Square Fish and the Square Fish logo are trademarks of Macmillan and are used by Farrar Straus Giroux under license from Macmillan."
• "Originally published in the United States by Farrar Straus Giroux"
• "First Square Fish Edition: May 2007"
• "mackids.com"
• "20 19 18 17 16 15 14"

To add to the fun is that the Amazon Look Inside is for the first printing and it starts out with that the logo is "An Imprint of Holtzbrinck Publishers" and "Originally published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux". Somewhere between 2007 and whenever my 14th printing was manufactured "Farrar, Straus and Giroux" became "Farrar Straus Giroux" and ownership of the Square Fish name and logo transferred from Holtzbrinck to Macmillan. The Wikipedia article for Holtzbrinck Publishing Group says they became 100% owners of Macmillan in 1999 and so it appears the transfer of ownership was from one tentacle to another of a very large cthulhu.

FWIW, there are two publications at present on ISFDB for ISBN 978-0-312-36754-1 with both crediting "Square Fish / Macmillan" as the publisher. FWIW, at present Macmillan owns Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

When I started writing this reply I had no idea the book I happened to have in hand would have been such a can of worms for the Verified Publishing Names project. I'm tempted to add this to ISFDB using "Square Fish / Farrar Straus Giroux" but that brings up my second point in that adding details to a record imposes an additional burden on future verifiers. I'd be adding notes explaining why I used "Square Fish / Farrar Straus Giroux" while the rest of ISFDB uses "Square Fish / Macmillan" and "Square Fish / Farrar, Straus and Giroux". It means though that a future verifier of the 14th printing would either need to double check that I correctly documented the details or do a quick "it seems close enough for me." --Marc Kupper 16:00, 15 October 2020 (EDT)

Very interesting topic. A partial solution to the problem is (could be) to quote what's on the copyright page and add it to the notes (when PVing a pub, or from Amazon's LookInside as far as it shows a facsimile of the copyright page). When over time a sufficiently large data set gets collected, this data could be mined to reconstruct a history of copyright changes / publisher history. That's basically what I started doing to eventually get a better understanding of the dynamics of the Dutch publisher world (however fruitless an excercise it may turn out to be... :)). I've done nothing with either topic since. I agree it could be interesting, but to what end? My guess is that the phrasing in the Help:Screen:NewPub under Publisher ("The publisher has in the past not been a key entity in the ISFDB, but publisher and imprint support is in the process of being improved, and a process of determining canonical names for publishers and imprints is in progress. Half title , Title, Dedication, and Acknowledgments. Encounter with Tiber

Hi, Marc! I added the pieces of interior art to this, but wasn't able to find the exact English title for each of them (some were logical, a few more were displayed with Amazon's look inside). For the page numbers I used the note that already was there, but it may be that it has to be modified, as Andres and Solie are entered in the note with art on pp. 174 & 175 (likely it's only Solie?). Winds of Change

Would you mind if I make the following changes to Winds of Change before I PV it?
1) Remove "(Book Two of The Mage Winds)" from the title since the series name doesn't belong in the title per current standards.
2) Make the page count [12]+449 to account for the unnumbered pages.
3) Add missing Author's Note title.
4) Remove and delete the title Winds of Change (Jacket Design) and move the info to the Notes since standards don't allow designer info titles.
5) Remove and delete the title Winds of Change (Time Line) and replace it with the more standard title Official Timeline for the Heralds of Valdemar Series used for the rest of the series.
6) Add other notes and the WorldCat ID

The Fox and King's Shield

I was getting ready to PV The Fox but noticed that the page count is incorrect per current standards. Since there's no content on the final unnumbered pages, the Page count should be [8]+691 instead of [8]+691+[5].

Same issue for King's Shield where the Page count should be [8]+594 instead of [8]+594+[4].

I'd also like to add the maps as a separate title to both.

Violette Malan page counts

I was getting ready to add notes and PV two Violette Malan titles but first want to change their page counts by removing the counts for unnumbered pages that don't have content that needs to be recorded. They are as follows:
The Sleeping God shows [4]+488 but should be 488 since Acknowledgements aren't generally included.
The Soldier King shows [4]+423+[1] but should be 423 since Acknowledgements aren't generally included and the page at the end is an ad for the series.

I noticed that the sources I was working from listed the illustrator as "Ron Wing" whereas you have him credited as "Ron Wind".
