Narrator template

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that we added a new template to record the narrators for audiobooks ({{Narrator|Stefan Rudnicki}} for example). I changed it here and also added the Audible ASIN :) Annie 17:03, 15 January 2019 (EST)

The Indexes

These should be January-December (the previous year) - look at the few I have on hold - they have the CURRENT ISSUE disambiguation so when you change the year to the previous year, it does not make sense... For example this one should either be "Index (Asimov's, Volume 40, January - December 2016)" or "Index (Asimov's, January-February 2017)" (which means that it is the in Jan/Feb 2017 issue... Asimov's Readers' Poll Results

While adding the finalists for this year's Asimov's Readers' Poll awards, I noticed that we did not have the full poll results for 2017 nor 2018. Unfortunately the magazine's website only lists the winners. The SFADB also seems to be missing the full results for 2017 and, curiously, the novella results for 2018 (they have the others). I was wondering if the editorials announcing the results, in the September/October issues for each year, happen to publish the full results. Moments ago I added the 1st ed. (Countryman Press, 1937) submission from contemporary newspaper coverage mainly, but also a WorldCat record that reports page-span 13-61, which matches your report. See also the last bullet item.

HRW was created by 1960 merger of Henry Holt, Rinehart & Company (successor to Farrar & Rinehart), and John C. Winston. So it would hold their backlists.

ASIN vs Audible ASIN

Hi, I just corrected invalid ASINs for a title where you merged a title, The Bantam: A Phantom Traveler Novella. I assume the wrong codes were either entered by you, or became wrong codes because of the merge. What did I need to correct? There was a ASIN given that was in fact the Audible ASIN and on the palce of the audible ASIN there was a 10-digit string. Both ASIN and Audible ASIn can't be 10-digit strings. The correct ASIN for 'The Bantam: A Phantom Traveler Novella' is B078VTQWL2 (see the ebook), the correct Audible ASIN is B07N49BHWZ (see the audiobook). 1. A\The Phantom Lover

Hi. You verified this 1971 Dover omnibus in some undated printing, P381181. Please check whether it does contain "A Phantom Lover" under variant title "The Phantom Lover". The library records we cite for the original 1971 printing both show the original title "A Phantom Lover": LCCN 77-102771, which you cite in the Notes, and WorldCat OCLC 876263121, indirectly in a quoted 2018 GoodReads review. --Pwendt|talk 13:28, 18 March 2019 (EDT)

2. The Amber Witch. We should also know what info Dover provides concerning this text of "The Amber Witch" --translator, year, and more if available. Allan Quatermain

Here P578321 is one that you are likely to recall, I infer from your deliberate publication Note, "Misspells Quatermain's name as Quartermain on the cover" (with image that shows that stray 'r' on the spine). To me you imply correct spelling on the title page, so that the publication title and NOVEL title as "Quartermain" are mistakes, for your F. M. Lupton edition.

We have several publications of that NOVEL with two spelling errors in the title, "Allan Quartermain: Being and Account", presumably propagated by copy-paste from no more than one intentional entry of a mis-spelling. I don't propose to touch yours unless you recall that no mis-spelling is intentional.

If/when you find the book, it may provide helpful information about the publisher F. M. Lupton --most likely a street address. I have 7 different ones from 1880s to 1900s, gathered today in somewhat-related research. --Pwendt|talk 18:36, 20 March 2019 (EDT)

Well, this is certainly not a chapbook, so how does one list it? Maybe as a collaboration? One piece of fiction by one author, in a book filled by different authors certainly seems to fit the definition of an anthology to me, even if the other pieces are there to explore the themes of that one piece of fiction. Anyway, I'm not being hostile, I truly would like to know how to list this type of book, as there are plenty of them out there. I have read books like this dealing with Lovecraft, and James' The Turn of the Screw.

This also leads up to a second question. There are a LOT of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs of Carmilla. They should be put into a series, but Carmilla is already part of a series . . . so how would one go about organizing these stories. Some of this is above my pay grade y'know. Maybe "Carmilla Universe", and then make Martin Hesselius the parent series? Just trying to be a better editor. MLB 18:14, 29 March 2019 (EDT)

Yeah, but half the space, it's a two hundred page book, is taken up by extraneous material. This is not just a couple of forewords or afterwords. These are full-length articles/criticisms. I can't see a two-hundred page book filled with multiple authors rendered down to a chapbook. Still, I'm just a lowly editor, but, the rules are the rules, and if the rules say it's so, what do I know. Time to move on. Lots of indie authors that need to be on this site. I think. No big deal. The Carol Singer

A quick question about your verified "The Carol Singer" by Chris Fox. The Locus Index says that it is the same story as "The Carol Singer" by Chris Naylor which appeared in The Young Oxford Book of Christmas Stories in 2001. However, the Naylor story is currently listed as having been first published in 1988 while our database record says that the Fox story was first published in December 1998.

I'll look, but it wouldn't matter I fear, the pamphlet was just some loosely folded pages that were meant as a give-away. As I stated in my note, there is no date. I got it when a story of mine was rejected. If other sources state that the original publishing date is 1988, then that's what it is. However, shouldn't the Fox and Naylor pages be merged? Well, the fact there was another "Chris Fox" active around the same time made me wonder if Locus may have been mistaken. My thinking was "Perhaps the two Carol Singers shorts are two separate stories by two different authors". However, their theme is the same, the word count is close - 2 pages vs. 4 unnumbered pages -- and the FictionMag Index also thinks that Chris Naylor used "Chris Fox" as a pseudonym in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I ended up creating VT/pseudonym associations for the two stories. Now to make sure that our bibliography of the latest addition to the "Chris Fox" brigade is up to date. Hi Mark, I accepted your edit to add Signal Red, but I'm bothered by "Penguin Global" as the publisher as I can't find reference anywhere to this being an actual Penguin imprint. Amazon Look Inside shows the pub as having "First published by Penguin Books India 2005" on the copyright page. Can you clarify where Penguin Global comes from? Cover images should be uploaded using the "Upload new cover scan" option on the publication. If you are adding a new publication, you should wait for the publication to added and then upload it using the link. The link will properly name the image as well as apply the correct templates. When uploading non-cover images directly to the wiki, you need to manually apply a license tag to the image. Help:How to upload images to the ISFDB wiki provides instructions for this. Looking at your contributions, you have a lot of images that need to be fixed. Please go through your history and apply the proper templates. Wiki edits are not moderated. Unfortunately, that means things like this can be missed for awhile.

As for this edit, that is not sufficient. You need to edit the page and add an appropriate image license template (they are listed in the help page I linked above). For this author image, I would assume you would use the fair use one (Template:Author Image Data), but you need to pick the correct one based on the true copyright status (so fair use, by permission, public domain, create commons, etc.). Once you pick the right license, go to the license template page (they are all linked on the help page) and it will give you the instructions for what you need to enter on the image page.

The Girl Who Was Burned Alive

In Tales of Magic and Mystery, March 1928, the essay The Girl Who Was Burned Alive is credited to Howard Thurston, but varianted as by Walter B. Gibson. However, Thurston and Gibson are different people. As there no note indicating the pub had an incorrect credit, is this variant correct? -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:52, 4 May 2019 (EDT)

I've seen sources saying that Gibson ghostwrote two of Thurston's magic books. This is entered as an essay. Is that correct? Does it say it's by the magician (as apposed to another Thurston) or state it's reprinted from somewhere? Also, the one pub has it listed as "Burned Alive" and the other "Buried Alive". The pulps were pretty shifty when it came to giving credit where credit was due. So I don't know if the Thurston article was an article or an excerpt. This is something that an expert in magic could tell you, which I am not. But, I suspect that if Gibson ghost-wrote Thurston's books, then he probably did Thurston's articles as well. My copy is in storage, but Amazon states that the article is BURNED alive, and I copied my submission directly from the replica itself (which I got for the Lovecraft story). Being unable to drive, when I can get to my storage container I'll double check, but not right away. Family, you can't choose 'em. Again, until there is proof positive, maybe the article should be changed back to just Thurston with a note on the writer's page. MLB 20:46, 11 May 2019 (EDT)

I have merged the two stories under "Burned" since that is what you verified it as. However, please double check when you have a chance. Other sources quote it as "Buried" and Amazon listings are not the most accurate. "War of the Giant Apes" merge

Hi. I accepted your War of the Giant Apes merge, but the submission had an issue with the length. It wanted to lose the SHORTFICTION/novella length in favor of NOVEL, but the record is a variant of another SHORTFICTION/novella parent, so that would have been a mismatch. I took a look at the appearances and only verification we have, and it seemed to me that SHORTFICTION/novella is likely the correct length, so I put that back. If it should be NOVEL, multiple edits will be needed to produce a consistent result, plus checking with the primary verifier for the one verified appearance. Any way you want it. I really didn't know how to merge Alexander Blade, as no real author was credited with it, so I took a leap of faith, and tried to figure it out. Novels in Magazines

I'm going to reject your two edits to change the title type of two stories ([1] and [2]) to novels. When a novel appears in a single installment in a magazine, we treat it as a serial instead of a novel. Additionally, the title should be changed by appending "(Complete Novel)". This is described under Title->Serials and Title Type->SERIAL in this help section. I did approve the variant relationship for these two titles, but you'll need to change these to titles to SERIALs. Capitalization (and accents) variation in author credits

Hi. It's futile to try to make a title record that has an author credit differing only in capitalization or diacriticals/accents from an existing author record that is otherwise spelled the same. The software matches what you have provided to the existing entry -- despite those differences -- and uses the existing entry, essentially ignoring your variations. So the only way to have one title with LaDonna instead of Ladonna is to change the canonical author record to use LaDonna. Then all titles will have LaDonna instead of Ladonna. It's not currently possible to have some as LaDonna and others as Ladonna. I will take a look and see about changing the author record if LaDonna is predominant among the appearances of the titles we have. --MartyD 12:29, 11 August 2019 (EDT)

The Wish List

My health has been going sidewise for a while now and people have been shifting some of my stuff around, and during a recent hospital stay some stuff got really messed up. So, I don't really know where this book is. What I know is that Keijiro Komine is a real photographer and some of his stuff can be found on Getty Images. I also know that I wouldn't have listed Komine's name unless it had been mentioned in the book in someway. Until I find it I'll temp verify this book, although none of this answers your questions. "The Waters of a New World" submission

Hi. The submission I have on hold is presented as if the author is being changed, but it's being changed to the same author, so it's effectively doing nothing. The unmerge you sent will split the short story into separate copies which is not what you are trying to do I think. The story is in one anthology here and one magazine. I know that some are reprinted twice - and these are in separate series the way you organize them but this one seems to have only one reprint. So... what are you trying to split from what? Somebody tinkered with the Adventure House facsimile reprints and Pulp Tales Press Facsimile Reprints of the Thrilling Wonder Facsimile Reprints and combined them into one series (Thrilling Wonder Stories (reprints)). I was trying to keep things more organized. I created one series and carried on from an unknown editor with the other. I just want to put everything else in order. Cloning back in time and contents

Just a quick reminder - when cloning to create an older edition, the contents of the book also need to have their dates changed. "Visionary II" for example seems to have all of its content original to it (so all internal contents match the date of the edition) - so when you cloned, it would have left the e-book with all titles after the pub date. And if the clone goes before an update, you need to do it one by one. So I changed all dates (via editPub - only 1 pub added so they could be changed that way in bulk) and then approved the clone) :) Annie 21:59, 15 September 2019 (EDT)

Weird prices

When you see a weird price like $13.21 and so on on a self-published or small press book, take a look at the other Amazons - UK, AU or CA. Usually it turns out that it is one of theirs and it has a nice round-ish price there. This one for example is a UK publication - so the price looks better in their currency. Small authors and all that

As you are working on authors very orderly, do you think that this may help you? Basically we have tens of thousands of ISBNs and ASINs that need processing - and Fixer can dump all he knows about an author in a list so an editor can work through them. Fixer also has ASIN only lists (no ISBN books) and I am sure he can also dump these if need be. You still may need to chase an edition or 10 but you will get a starting list. If you do not think that it will be helpful, no reason to participate but thought I should mention it. One looks black (the paperback one), the other one faded and/or grey to me. I usually change the link to Amazon between versions of the book even if they look exactly the same - using what Amazon had attached to that version specifically. This way I do not need to decide if they are the same - if it is there, it belongs to the book :)

Cover design vs Cover artist

Hi Mark,

The current practice (and the help page - see the last sentence in the Artist section) is to record the cover artist (if any) in the Coverart record and the cover designer only in the notes (So no artist, no coverart for that specific book). This one seems to have only a credit for a design, not for the art (unless I missed it somewhere)

Changing dates

When trying to re-date a complete book (with contents), doing just this is not enough to change the contents dates. Every item that already has a date keeps its original date (unlike the case when you are adding a new publication and we populate automatically).

What needs to be done is to edit every field which has the old date and put in a new date (next to the cover image if any and next to each content item). If you look at the edit screen, see all those "2019-09-02" in the contents section? They all need changing. I restored the date to the publication itself (because the paperback is on the second, it is the only date that does not need changing :)

If I approve the clone now, then we will need to update each of these titles one by one. So I will keep the clone on hold for now - would you like to try to submit the complete PubEdit and then I will approve the clone after that. Alternatively I can do the complete PubEdit this time and you can just keep that in mind for the future. Annie 18:11, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

• When you are done moving messages, save both pages. Use "Show Preview to make sure it looks as you want it to.
• Now get to your main archive page here and press Edit at the top
• Copy the very last line one more time at the bottom and edit it: Now the last component is "2016Jul-Dec Archives: January-June 2017". Replace "2016Jul-Dec" with whatever you typed in the first step and the thing after the : is for your reference soup to you
• Save this one and you are all set.

The Reprints series

The arguements over wether or not a 175 to 200 plus books are really novels. I've had a number of novels wiped from the databank because the moderator decided that novels weren't novels. Which is one of the reasons you haven't seen much of me lately. MLB 22:48, 18 November 2019 (EST)

If they were in the DB, they should have been just converted, not deleted (and I suspect they were). If they were rejected on addition, then yeah - they never made it to the DB. I have it on my list to go and save (and re-add) all of those rejected if they are not in the DB. And as we saw, one of the rejected turned out to be very comfortably over 40K no matter how anyone tried to count so... I have some questions on how exactly he counts in some cases. But that is for another conversation.

As for the bigger question here: I would approve it and then change it if I do not think it is a novel (especially if not verified; I will always talk to the verifier if there is one). Most moderators would do the same. Let's the dust settle on the rest of the issues (we are having a bit of a split-novels problem at the moment on top of everything else) and I will be bringing that up as a moderator policy question. Update on the moderation process

A quick update, which will hopefully clarify where we stand with the recent problems.

• I have discussed recent issues with moderation with Christian. He has re-committed himself to following consensus when editing ISFDB records/guiding editors and to following other ISFDB rules and guidelines like not changing existing series organization without prior discussion. I will keep an eye on things to make sure that we don't have problems going forward.
• I apologize for my lack of oversight of Wiki discussions. My health hasn't been that great the last couple of years and I was spending my shrinking "ISFDB man-hours" primarily on Fixer and on software development. In retrospect, it was a mistake. I should have been paying more attention to Wiki discussions. Again, my apologies. I will try to do better in the future.
• Going forward, if I and other moderators miss problems during your Wiki-based discussions with the reviewing moderator (which is always possible given the number of submissions and Wiki posts these days), please don't hesitate to bring them up on the ISFDB:Moderator noticeboard. As I wrote the other day:
  • If an editor believes that a moderator is not treating him or her in a "supportive and friendly way" and/or not enforcing the rules and the consensus correctly, s/he is encouraged to raise the issue on the Moderator Noticeboard. It will be reviewed by other Moderators. If necessary, it will be escalated to a "bureaucrat" who can impose administrative sanctions to ensure that all moderators follow the consensus and treat editors fairly.

My copy has Marvin Kaye on both the title and contents page for the Lavinson story, and Kaye admits to being Lavinson. C. H. US states "import" and UK does not. If the price is £1.75 that must be some time after the UK change to decimal, which the report of ISBN also suggests.

Of course the rules apply - but with entering this one, we'd state that there does exist a stand-alone, all-inclusive publication. Please don't rely on Goodreads or Wattpad if you don't have further evidence of an existing publication: a 'cover image' doesn't necessarily mean that there is a corresponding publication, it might mean a serialization or a (possibly) upcoming publication - somewhen in the future, but it might as easily be cancelled. And a date of publication set to 'unknown' for new publications will most likely mean just that - if you don't have it at your hand. I'll delete this one. • Change them to chapbooks - they are too short for novels - look inside shows 25 lines per page, less than 10 words per line (plus illustrations and shorter pages) and the ebooks come as <80 pages.

As your verification is before the juvenile flag and probably before the chapbook, I suspect that this should not be a problem but if you disagree, please let me know (and I will leave them alone for now). I've been adding the nominees for the Kitschies award, and one of the 2018 art nominees was a "David Dean". It looks like we currently have 2 different people of this name under the same author record http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?120561

• One is a writer of three mystery short stories between 1992 and 2013, including one in this Ellery Queen volume
• The other is a British artist as documented here https://childrensillustrators.com/ddean/about

I'm sure these are 2 different people - an artist who graduated university in 1999 seems unlikely to have been writing short stories in 1992 - but as a relative newbie to ISFDB, I'm - perhaps naively - assuming that part of the point of PVing pubs is to be able to chase up things like this? Any chance you can check that pub to see if it has any biographical notes for "David Dean" that might confirm these are indeed two different people?

A quick google has shown me that there are two different artists going under the name of David Dean, and both have completely different styles. So there's that. And while it wouldn't be the first time an author and an artist held simultaneous jobs, witnes Angela Waters, I don't think that's the case here. I'll ask Dean who has a listing at Goodreads, about this, but don't hold your breath. On-the-other-hand, for now, if you want, you can seperate them by having one as David Dean and the other as David Dean (I) and explain to the moderator as to why. Amazon's age groups are messed up sometimes. This one is not children or even YA for me so I would not mark it Juvenile. The change I did was a move of the ? from one title to another (see my comment here).

For the chapbooks... depends. If the book has the title "My Special Christmas" on its title page but the story inside is called "Christmas Story", they will be different of course. But I would not make them different for series names -- the series go on the story only; if it is a chapbook level series then it will need to be pub series. Hope that makes sense. The current set of rejections

Sorry about them but as explained in the firs one, approving them would have created the incorrect series (with the word Book at the end) which after that I had to delete (after doing an edit anyway to clear the word from the titles). So I rejected them and just edited the titles based on how you had edited them. I had been caught in this when copying series from Amazon as well so if it pings as "unknown series" when you know you added the earlier, check for "Book/Novel" at the end of whatever you are trying to add :) Annie 16:51, 22 April 2020 (EDT)

This author has a problem with his submissions. He downloads his books, withdraws them, then he downloads them again with new covers. They might even be revised. Hell, I don't know. In the case that you mention, this is an early audio download, different company, different cover, and a different narrator. I assume that this was once sold on Amazon, but was superseded by the next version. I've seen this before. ASIN probably worked once, but that copy is now gone, so it doesn't function. But this will happen again with even new books, especially ones whose parent publishing company goes out of business. Because the ASIN doesn't work now, doesn't mean it shouldn't be listed, I think, but what do I know. I'll leave it up to you. MLB 13:47, 17 May 2020 (EDT)

Guys, even if Amazon removes the book, the ASIN is a valid identifier for the book and should be in the ASIN field if it belonged to the book. Goodreads is a very good place to find and confirm those dead ASINs (and these then allow to connect elsewhere). You may add a note that it is not on amazon anymore but if we pull it from the field every time amazon removes a book, we may as well stop recording it at all. Annie 16:16, 17 May 2020 (EDT)

An interesting topic. Annie is right: when Amazon deletes an ASIN -- which they do quite frequently these days -- Goodreads usually preserves the ASIN and its data. I wonder if we should add Goodreads as another "supported site" to the ASIN External ID Type. It would use the ASIN value to link to Goodreads using URLs like https://www.goodreads.com/search?q=B07NJQVSLL where "B07NJQVSLL" is the ASIN. You added the stories and I know how much of a trouble that is - I would have rejected and asked you to redo it without them but did not want to lose all the work already done. So I fixed the rest :) If there was more than one of those, I would have come and asked you to fix it but fixing one once in awhile won't kill me. How is the invention of no-sugar no-fat no-anything unhealthy milk chocolate that does not taste like cardboard coming along? :) I approved all your standing submissions but had to do some changes:

• Your template talks about Goodreads as a source but when there is no record in GR, it really does not need to be in the notes.
• Missing ASIN in the first one and one migrated down into the field - I know it is not functional but as we discussed earlier - it is still a valid ASIN and we use it for things like Fixer deciding which books we already have or an editor deciding if the book they are holding is one of the books we have or they need to add. And we can add more links later - so a note that the book is not available in Amazon at the time is fine but let's have the ASIN in its field if it belongs to the book. :)
• Series name need to go into the title. Under the current policies, "Vim: A Watcher's Gift Novel" belonging to a series called "Watcher's Gift" gets just the title "Vim". While the long one is technically not wrong, chances of it staying that way and not getting cleaned sooner or later is not very big so I just fixed it before any cloning. :)

INFETTO

When adding non-US editions, please use the currency of the country where published vs. the US currency from Amazon. In the case of INFETTO, I was able to pull it from amazon.it since it was an Italian edition. If the original is not easily found, you can just leave the price off. Also, for translations, the translation credit also needs to be in the title record. When doing a new pub entry like this, you can add it in the title notes field as part of the submission. Non-English editions - additional data

While approving your non-English submissions, I had been updating the notes (mainly translators, prices and similar items) and capitalization where needed (the only one that needs every word (minus the list) with a capital letter is English; German needs nouns capitalized; almost any other language follows sentence case -- Amazon.com and Goodreads not knowing the translator for example does not mean native stores and sites in the language do not :) Just heads up. Duplicates again

Before adding a book, try to search for the ISBN and/or ASIN in the DB -- this one was already on the DB. As the old one did not have the stories I approved yours and deleted the old one but please, add the "check the ASIN/ISBN" to your standard routine or you end up with situations like the other day :( As a rule, in cases like that we do nor delete the pre-existing publication - people may have links to it here on the site or outside of it... most times I will approve the duplicate, import from it into the old and then delete the new one. Some of her books are published under the Endeavor Reads imprint, and some, usually the same edition, the difference merely being the ebook version and the print version, so I thought to standardize the publisher. There are novels that have been serialized and never put into book form, and novels and short stories that have been revised/altered from one printing to the next. Okay, I am responsible for everything this woman has done on this site. I keep track of the authors that I add to this site and she's one of them. I've been updating her works and she keeps reprinting her books under new titles and covers, and it looks like she's done it again, but now her books have different covers and and a different author's name, plus a different page count; bigger letters and larger margins, or were the books revised? Who knows? I can only list what I see on Amazon. Until somebody primary verifies these books we may never know. I try to do my best, but Goodreads was no good in this case either. It may be a case of "Harlan Ellison Syndrome" in which the author is constantly revising their works. Again, I don't know. Some authors can't settle on a definite version of their works. Hold on a second. Am I missing something here? We had a credit based on the Look Inside of the actual book (primary source) and for some reason we transformed it into a credit based on a site (secondary source). This should had been handled with a variant -- we go by the book when we know what it says, not based on the secondary sources (and from there the canonical name of the artist as it is a secondary source). Not that I like the "Design" author names but this "change" sounds backwards to what we are supposed to be doing... and the title page of the actual book does use that name. Hmm, in the early years of mine I was told that we should credit artists (and authors) - that is: human beings - whenever possible, and the corporate 'May Dawney Designs' stands for May Dawney as per her website.

And if that is your reasoning, two things should have happened - a note should have been added to the publication that is changed indicating the actual credit (instead of just deleting information sourced from the book directly - secondary source can be used to correct information from the book if it is wrong but a note is mandatory when that happens - the way you left the publication sounds like the book itself had no credit) and there should have been a discussion about that with the editor who added the original credit, not to mention the list of moderators who approved them - you are doing the same thing again - changing things to look how you like them even if everyone else seems to think otherwise. Shall we take that whole conversation on how we want to credit in this case to R&S as this site is supposed to work in such cases instead of having a single editor making decisions on his own against the apparent consensus and without discussion? I did add according notes to the publications. As written above it wasn't my idea to use the credit: the initial impulse most likely came either from Bill Longley or Michael Hutchins, who were very helpful in my early years at ISFDB. The way of crediting works of art is usual. Just look at the recent detective work of Susan (O'Fearna), Hyju or Horzel, so it was done totally in line with the apparent consensus. (unindent) As far as I can tell, there are three separate issues here:

1. What do we enter in the Cover Artist field when the cover art is attributed to a corporate entity like "May Dawney Design"? I don't think this issue is currently covered by Help. The last Rules and Standards discussion -- at least the last one that I can find -- was in May 2015 and was inconclusive. The main problem with using "May Dawney" instead of "May Dawney Design" is that it's entirely possible for "May Dawney Design" to have additional employees (temporary or permanent) or outsource some orders. This is probably a bigger issue now than it was in the past because of the proliferation of self-publishing and assisted publishing arrangements which outsource different tasks. We may want to revisit the issue on the Rules and Standards page.
2. If we enter a Cover Artist name which differs from what is stated in the book, should we document the differences between what the book says and what our record says in Notes? I believe the answer is an unambiguous "yes". In this case the Note field says "Cover art credit from the artist's website", but it should be expanded to say something like "Cover art credited to "May Dawney Design" on the book's title page. According to May Dawney's web site, she is responsible for the art attributed to "May Dawney Design", so the ISFDB record credits her as the cover artist, ."
3. If an editor makes the change described in item 2 immediately above, should he or she use the publication record's Edit History to find the other editors who have worked on the publication and notify them? The answer is definitely "Yes" with a capital "Y". This is very important and the main reason why Edit History pages have been implemented over the last year. Making a change is only one part of the puzzle. Making sure that other editors understand why the change was made and agree with the reasoning behind it is even more important. If they don't understand the reasoning or don't agree with it, they will continue to do things differently. Then we'll have different editors using different data entry standards and/or stepping on each other's toes, wasting everyone's time and generating needless conflict and frustration.

This goes back to our earlier (2019-2020) discussions re: communications between editors. Please -- please -- make sure to communicate your changes to the other editors who have worked on the same records. A project which lets multiple editors change the same records can only succeed if the editors communicate with each other. Ahasuerus 16:05, 7 October 2020 (EDT)

Until somebody with a copy can say what goes where, I just treated them pieces of unnamed pieces of art. I see that I misidentified several as short stories instead of illustrations. I do think that they are about the Omegaverse. They go through what the series, and what the sub-genre is about. Especially since the author is trying to sue everybody because she believe she invented the sub-genre. This is like E. E. "Doc" Smith trying to sue every other writer for writing Space Opera. In the end, it also deals with other authors that might end up on this site someday. Myself, rape and rape fantasies are offensive, but it is a form of speculative fiction. Or your friendly neighborhood moderator can drop by and help :) The 16th printing file name should have been RDWLLPWRNK0000.jpg. The image BKTG06967.jpg belongs to the first printing. So most likely when the 16th printing was created, the cover was by mistake added to the first and then just linked to the 16th (or something along these lines). You can see here that it links to the 1st printing from Avon from 1990-00-00. So in order to untangle:

• MLB reuploads his cover to the proper place and changes the link into the 16th.
• Glenn then overwrites the existing image for the first and adds the link to the 1st.
• Annie deletes the old image from the 1st printing.

In addition, I've removed the publisher (Petrifying Pages) as well, as there's no mention of publisher anywhere (and no secondary sources either - at least not that I could find) - we never enter assumed or derived data. That information can go in the Notes. I've also updated the publisher to 'Pure Print Publishing / Petrifying Pages' for the others, as Petrifying Pages is the Horror imprint of Pure Print Publishing, and that was already in the DB too. Dating magazines

We never use Amazon to date magazines :) So the date of this remains its official publication date; the Amazon date can go into the notes regardless if it is earlier or later. So, I'm listing both, the Amazon ebook version, and the publisher's webzine version, both of which are similar, but different from each other. Nope. I told you it is both ebook and WEBZINE. ebook/webzine is a format like paperback is for example. That is why we want BOTH of them as we want a hc and a tp for a book if both were published. Magazine is a type of publication (like a NOVEL or a COLLECTION) - it does not matter if the format is ebook/webzine/paperback - it is a magazine and follows the rules for magazines dating.

Analog get shipped weeks before its cover date. When I was getting it on paper I was getting it long time before its printed date. We still use the date on the cover. Having the magazine in electronic format does not change the rules. Annie 22:05, 5 March 2021 (EST)

PS: If you want to change the rules for dating magazines, please feel free to make your case over in R&S. But as things stand, books are dated based on their actual publication dates; magazines are dated based on their covers (schedules/whatever else can be used). Most magazines will be 2020-10-00 or 2020-00-00 only (like Analog does) but this one has a biweekly dated schedule so we use that (like any other magazine that comes out every week or every other week does). • Where is the format coming from - both GR and Amazon.com say "paperback" and not "mass market paperback" which for 1995/7 is pretty straightforward (the new "tall mmpbs" had not yet made an appearance so our pb is really mmpb? If it is based on the rest of the books of that era for that publisher, we need a note saying so :)

I assume you were doing the title change in preparation for the merge? If so, an easier way (in the sense of requiring only a single submission) is to go to the editor's page (in this case Scott H. Andrews), click the "Show All Titles" link on the right, select both the individual issue record and the year record, and hit merge at the bottom. The title in the ISFDB is currently "RE: Bubble 475" but I haven't found that title anywhere on the Internet. On the other hand, the author's site ([11]) lists it as "RE: Bubble 476) with a photo of the table of contents. Tangent online ([12]) also uses 476. Thanks!

Magazines naming and dating

Just a quick reminder that we treat magazines differently from books: we date based on cover date and not based on exact dates unless the magazine carries the date inside (then the date is cover date really) and we name with the date and not the issue number when we can derive that (and the number goes into the notes). I did a bit of a surgery on this one (and added the name of the magazine to the Afterword essay which was left without it). Feel free to update anything I wrote in the Notes field if you prefer different wording. And let me know if you have any questions/concerns. A few updates to these:

• The dates (As in "date fields") were all over the place (2021-07-00 for the August issue for example, 2021-03-14 for the February one). So I cleared up all of these. Now the grid does not look like a Picasso painting with February in March and August in July ;)
• When dating same-named artiwork, we use [2] and not (2) after the name :) So I fixed a few of those.

Depends on the publisher. Some are doing the regular tp covers; some are doing the fancy paperbacks with flaps. :) Amazon/Goodreads are usually good for figuring out if it is a hardcover or a paperback when you are not entirely sure (because translations can be fun); then for the latter, if it is 20/21 or higher cm, it is a tp. :)

For Turkish, it will be "Sert (Kapak)" for hardcover in most places. Karton is a regular/soft cover (as opposed to something as thin as a digest magazine cover for example which is a true "paper" cover); it does translate as cardboard indeed on its own but in this context, it means paperback.

Let's talk about that. You tried to make her an alternative name of two writers - R. L. Stine and a collective pseudonym of 2 other writers (Rob Kidd). None of those is correct - alternative names cannot have books and not all of hers are Stine's (or someone else's) and alternative names cannot have their own alternative names. Okay, if one goes to Carla Jablonski’s website you can see that she claims to have ghostwritten Calling All Creeps!. In my book, this means that she has ghostwritten this novel, and therefore deserves to get credit for it. No, not all R. L. Stine's are written by her, but if you check his page you will see that he has had a number of novels ghostwritten by others.

As for the Rob Kidd name, Kidd seems to be a house name for this series, and Jablonski is a book doctor, and on her web page she claims to have written The Siren Song, and yet, her name doesn’t appear here, so I was trying have her listed as an alternate name to Rob Kidd, which, having written one novel in Pirates of the Caribbean series, is a place where her name should be.

For Stine. Add the book as by Stine. Then we create a parent title with Stine and her as authors - that puts it on her page as well and we do not connect the names otherwise. The problem with connecting is that the way the site works, if you make someone a pseudonym, they cannot have their own titles. Which obviously will be wrong here. After that was approved, you need to update the books as well: in the omnibuses to just change the type inside of the book; in the ex-novels to change the type to chapbook and to add a chapbook record to them. You can use the story title record for the list of them so you can work through them. Galaxy's Edge, Issue 1: March 2013

Regarding this submission, a couple of comments/concerns:

• Shutterstock does not create art. They are a library of stock photos. It would be better to credit the artist (which is diversepixels per the Shutterstock page) instead.
• The images are not the same. They are very, very similar, but the position of the buildings against the "moon" is different. Unfortunately, I don't see a date on the Shutterstock page so not sure what came first. It's probable that it's the same artist, but the artwork could also be inspired by the cover if the Shutterstock artist saw it.
• When adding a cover artist credit that is not from the pub, the source should be added to the pub notes and not the moderator notes.

Kaleidotrope is a quarterly, not a monthly and has the season on their title (Spring and so on) and not the month as they shift between the months sometimes and we keep the date as printed (the season IS a date in that regard) (this will probably become Spring 2022 if they hold the pattern of naming). Prentice Hall Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy - Questions and possible edits

Hi.

I recently obtained a copy of "The Prentice Hall Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy". My copy appears to be a first edition, with the same ISBN and a numberline of "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" (I could be confused about what the numberline means).

I noticed a few issues in the table of contents of my tp copy vs. the two ISFDB entries that I had questions about. (2003 version, that you verified, at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?398104, and 2000 version, that Markwood verified, at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?251064). I should note that the contents of both of these ISFDB entries appear to be identical as noted in the ISFDB TOC.

The possible discrepancies are:

1. "The Gray Wolf", George McDonald, p 208, (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?923573) does not show up in either ISFDB TOC. It is in both the TOC and the body of the book in my tp version. I would appreciate it if you could check your TOC and body of the book and verify that this story is present in your copy. I'll add it if we can conclude it is present in all copies.

2. "Introduction....", P 1, does not show up in either ISFDB TOC. It is in my copy in both TOC and the body of the book. I would appreciate it if you could check your TOC and body of the book and verify that this entry is present in your copy. I'll add it if we can conclude it is present in all copies.

3. A. E. van Vogt's "The Weapons Shop" is listed as such in my copy, both TOC and body of the book and in the copyright info, which does match original publication in Astounding. It is listed as "The Weapon Shop" in the two current editions in ISFDB. I suspect this was a typo, but I could be wrong. I would appreciate it if you could check your copy and let me know if this needed to be revised.

4. A number of the page numbers for stories are off by 1 page in my TOC and body of the book, vs the two ISFDB editions. I am not sure what is going on here, but I suspect that the the original ISFDB TOC was perhaps using the page the story title appeared on, and not the page the author bio is on for the story that immediately proceeds the title, which is how the TOC in my paper version is put together. This applies to "The Damned Thing" (P81 in ISFDB, P80 in mine), "Dracula's Guest" (P87 in ISFDB, P86 in mine), "The Monkey's Paw" (P95 in ISFDB, P94 in mine), "Catnip" (P126 in ISFDB, P125 in mine), "The Tower of the Elephant" (P257 in ISFDB, 256 in mine), "A Martian Odyssey" (P557 in ISFDB, P556 in mine), "There Will Come Soft Rains" (P719 in ISFDB, P718 in mine), "Dust Rag" (P840 in ISFDB, P839 in mine), "Or All The Seas With Oysters" (P853 in ISFDB, P852 in mine), "Without A Thought" (P869 in ISFDB, P868 in mine), "The Fiend" (P876 in ISFDB, P875 in mine), "Driftglass" (P895 in ISFDB, P894 in mine), "Roommates" (P931 in ISFDB, P930 in mine), "The Undercity" (P952 in ISFDB, P951 in mine), "Opening Fire" (P961 in ISFDB, P960 in mine), "The Engine at Heartspring's Center" (P965 in ISFDB, P 964 in mine), and "The Plague Star" (P1049 in ISFDB, P1048 in mine).

I checked in with Moderator AnnieMod on this issue. ISFDB is somewhat silent on this issue at the moment, of having the ISFDB TOC page number match the version page number when the author bio is what the version page TOC is based on. She mentioned that the help page needs to be updated to address this kind of issue (if that is what is going on), but she did not give direction to make an edit. I would appreciate your thoughts or confirmation on what is happening here.

5. Although minor, the "Index" and "Credits" (detailed copyright info) are not listed in either current ISFDB TOC, nor in the Notes. I assume they are present in all editions following the last essay currently noted in the TOC. AnnieMod concurred that this is not mandatory but is helpful, and I'll add them to the Notes unless there is a good reason.

Given that the TOC for both ISFDB editions of this book appear to be identical, I'll notify the PV (MARKWOOD) that this is doing on and will propose to do the same thing to both editions after we reach agreement. I am approaching you first, as MARKWOOD did note that his copy might be packed away and hard to get at.

My sympathies. I had to get this anthology for a college course, and I damn near had to sell a kidney to buy it. Still, that is neither here nor there. So, the fourth point is easy. ISFDS rules state that usually all stories start where the first illustration starts, this can also count for title pages or biographies. If you use other means, then a note would be good. But, the table of contents can be wrong. That being said, it was one of my early edits, and I may have gotten somethings wrong. I was actively discouraged from listing acknowledgements, credits, and indexes when I started, so I usually don't do it now, so go ahead. My copy of this book is in storage, and you'll have to wait until I see if I can find somebody to help me look for it to answer any of the other questions. I considered myself very fortunate to be able to buy a pretty cheap used copy at about $22, in pretty good shape. I was really hoping to find a library copy, but was not able to. There's also a partial of the signature on another of their books, but Manor was a notorious third tier book company, which might have been a money laundering company for organized crime, and constantly reprinted books and covers without paying anybody, so it might have come from anyplace. I have been working on one of the cleanup reports. It looks like you are using a template for the notes when you create digital audio download publications. If he'd mentioned his copy was price-clipped when entering his edit nearly 10 years ago I wouldn't have had to ask him anything. I enter my edits and then ask PV questions if necessary because many of them have told me to just go ahead and make changes since they've made so many mistakes in their edits over the years that it's a waste of time for me to contact them every time unless there's a major change, and I think I've proven by now that when I make a change it's usually correct. In this case I only contacted him because I was curious why he didn't see a price, and now I know; also, I don't mind asking him a question now and then because unlike many other editors I've dealt with here, he isn't hostile and can usually answer people's questions politely. --Username 20:39, 3 April 2022 (EDT)

Mark, in your verified publication Analog Science Fiction and Fact, January-February 2022, two of three author names in this review were misspelled. 'Sarah Rafael Garcia' entered as ' Sara Rafael Garcia' and 'Alex Hernandez' as 'Alex Hernandex'. This caused the names to show up on the 'Authors That Exist Only Due to Reviews' error report. I have corrected the names since neither are recognized alternate names. If these are your typos, nothing more needs to be done. Vick[iy] MacDonald Harris

Hi, you'd added some contents to an anthology last month, in particular a story by "Vicki MacDonald Harris". There's also a Vicky MacDonald Harris, who has a story in (what I think is) a sequel to the aforementioned anthology.

I looked at the Amazon UK previews for the ebook and tp of the former, and the references on the previews (copyright page and back cover of the tp; copyright & contents page of the ebook) all refer to "Vicky". Any idea if this is just a data entry typo, or whether we need to keep both author records and make one an alternate? 'Modified' series by Kat Stiles

I did some surgery on the 'Modified' series by Kat Stiles. A few observations since you are a Self-Approver.

• From the help section "A publication may be classified as an omnibus if it contains multiple works that have previously been published independently, and at least one of them is a NOVEL, ANTHOLOGY, COLLECTION, or NONFICTION." Since the only contents were the serial installments, it failed this test. ('Omnibuses without Contents Titles' is what alerted me to the problem)
• Handling serials

1. For title type SERIAL, do not use any fields other than title & author.
2. The serial installments are linked via variant. Relevant help section. This series illustrates both possible scenarios, one title only published in serial form and one published in full as well as serialized. Any other information (series, series number, length, any relevant notes or links) belongs in the parent. Since the installment were published as (Chapbooks), it is necessary to keep the serial titles the same as the chapbook titles. Fortunately, there is enough disambiguation. They will show up on the 'Serials without Standard Parenthetical Disambiguators' report, but the ignore flag can be set.

• When converting an omnibus, remove the content titles from the publications before changing the title type. (Got a yellow warning the first time and had to change back to omnibus)

3. On page [6], add interiorart title "Bones of the Past (map)" by Ellen Kostyk
4. On page 313, add essay title "Glossary of Odd or Foreign Terms (Bones of the Past)" by uncredited
5. On page [319] add interiorart title "Bones of the Past (map [2])" by uncredited
6. On page [321] add interiorart title "Tablet Found at Site of First-Folk Ruins" by uncredited
7. On page [322] add shortfiction title "There Are Elves Out There" by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon. Once that title is created, I'll add a note to it explaining that it is an excerpt from Born to Run.

I also note that the story is listed in your pub as "Mole Man", which agrees with how FictionMags has the original magazine appearance and it would seem odd that the chapbook and the story have different titles. Is it possible you're thinking of Wil McCarthy? This Asimov's story is the only showing in the bibliography for Wil McIntosh, whereas there are several dozen credits for Will McIntosh.

On the plus-side, looking into this again, I notice we have an entry for William D. McIntosh with just a single story from 2007 in their bibliography, and given that matches the legal name for Wil McIntosh, it's something that needs author varianting for fixing the credit for that story, which I'll do once I've tried to find out which is the appropriate action. Hi, I see you consider ASINs to be Goodreads Ids. They are not however. The Goodreads Id, like the Isfdb Id, can be found in the url of the publication. Goodreads has ISBNs and ASINs as external Ids, just like us. Digital Audible Records get Audible ASINs and are other editions than the Kindles and/or ebooks, that get the regular ASINs. "Operation Time Search" ACE 63412

Hi Mark. You verified http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?276536. The book entry in the database reads "Date: 1977-03-00" I own the publication (baught it from a collector, who marked all books with the date he baught them. This one: 23.06.1977/2.2.1977) On the spine, there is the numer "441 63412 150" which can be interpreted as ISBN 9780441634125. The ACE number is "ACE /63412|$1.50". If I search the book in another DB, the printing date seem 1975, which seems more reasonable for the third printing, than 1977 in the DB. elsbernd 12:56, 14 August 2022 (EDT)
