Welcome!

Hello, Kwikfoot, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!--swfritter 15:28, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Wizard's Goal

I guess this is the pub you are trying to add. I see that is also available at fictionwise. A few points before I approve the submission.

  • We generally enter the binding as "ebook" with a lower case "e".
  • Page count? Is that from the PDF version?
  • Price. There should be nothing but a single currency value here. In this case I would suggest putting the CD-ROM price in the notes field.
  • Cover Images. We generally don't link to images unless we have permission. See our Image Linking Permission Screens.
  • Book Review. It looks like you are trying to document this online review. Our standards don't allow for the addition of online reviews in the publication that is being reviewed. An interesting imaginative idea but the only reviews we allow are ones that appear in publications that can legitimately be entered into the system and website reviews are not currently valid.

I am hoping that you find this talk page soon so we can get this pub into the system. Again, welcome.--swfritter 15:04, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Accepted the publication and made modifcations consistent with my above comments. Is Garner really the cover artist? Thanks.--swfritter 15:51, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Swfritter reply

Hi

Sorry for not replying to your comments sooner. Got tied up with work and writing.

In answer to your questions, the page count is in PDF and I design the cover art for all my books.

Thanks for the welcome and support.

Bio:Alan J. Garner

I see that you have created Bio:Alan J. Garner. I have added our standard header for biographical sketches. As noted in that header, our guidelines for biographic pages specify "a brief, neutrally-written biographical article" and that "it should be professional in tone, not facetious, 'cutesy', or blatantly promotional." The guidelines also say that "Bio pages ought to be factual in content and the facts ought to be verifiable." Think encyclopedia article, not book blurb.

Currently, Bio:Alan J. Garner is rather on the blurby side. I hesitate to re-write it, particularly as boiling it down to bare facts would leave it very short indeed. Would you consider revising this page to have a less promotional and more factual tone? Note that Alan J. Garner does support a link to your website (or sites), where something like the current contents of Bio:Alan J. Garner would be more appropriate, in my view.

Thank you for your contributions, and welcome to the ISFDB. -DES Talk 15:17, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

The Chosen One

I have accepted your submission for your book The Chosen One, but I am making a few minor changes to make it fit our data conventions.

  • In the "Price" field we store only a single price with currency, such as "$6.99" or "A$7.50" or "£5.75". By our convention, "$" means US Dollars, "C$" means Canadian dollars, and "A$" would be Australian dollars. See Help:Screen:EditPub#Price. I have changed the price to "$5.98" and listed the CD-ROM price in the notes field.
  • The ImageURL field must hold a URL that points to the image itself, not to an amazon sales page or any other text page that contains the image. Otherwise the software will not be able to display the image as part of the publication page. See Help:Screen:EditPub# ImageURL for more details. I have changed the image URL to <http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41DXDVG5f8L.jpg>.

The result of my changes is here.

I hope these notes will be helpful to you, and that you will choose to enter not only your own works but other SF you may have access to. Thank you for your contributions so far. -DES Talk 15:43, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

I also made similar changes to your record of Chosen Too and to Three Times Chosen. Please check that the records are now correct and complete. If (or when) they are, you might choose to verify the publication records. Verified records have been marked correct and complete by someone who has compared them against the actual publications (primary verification) or against a secondary source (secondary verification). Users can treat verified records as more reliable. -DES Talk 15:51, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Semi-automated cover image uploads

I notice that you have used the semi-automated cover image upload feature. I hope this makes uploading cover images easier.

However, you still need to edit the publication record after you upload the image, and enter the image URL, just as we used to before the semi-automated upload feature was made available. otherwise the uploaded image is not actually displayed on the pub record.

  2. Click on the link just below the image, or the image itself, to go to the image file page (displays only the image, not the description)
  3. Copy the URL (address) to the clipboard
  4. Click the back button
  5. Click on the link to the pub record in the Description line (first line of the "Fair Use Image Data")
  6. Click on "Edit this Pub"
  7. Paste into the "Image URL:" field.
  8. Click the "Submit Data" button.
  9. Repeat these steps for each image.
