World Out of Mind

Perhaps you can take another look at this pub, the notes are somewhat confusing. I believe I have the same edition, but mine doesn't state it's the second printing (it does state there were two book club printings). If I understand the copyright page correctly, it was printed in November 1955, and published in January 1956. And finally, the cover is credited on the backcover as by "Robert Powers". My library note has the date as October 2001 and I don't use this to enter data for the books I do that direct, so it would seem strange to do it incorrect twice. It's not on my main book cases but packed away in boxes, so I'll dig into them tomorrow night.Kraang 01:40, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Publishers again

It looks like you're doing a bit of a clean-up or regularisation of publishers again (wiki-side at least) - thanks! I've been looking at a lot of Fixer submissions recently (can't get at most of my own books till I get well again), and think we can suggest some improvements there, like having "(BYR)" removed automatically and having "make this a 'jvn' title" added to moderator notes. And the publishers with "Trade" at the end normally signify that it's "tp" and the "Trade" could be removed and the binding changed from "pb". Do you feel the same? That sounds like a good idea. Once the minor variants of publishers names are gone I like to remove the redirects. I also keep an eye on Orbit and Tor, they have US and UK imprints. The ISBN#'s are different and the pricing is a dead giveaway.Kraang 02:34, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

The Interpreter title reference

Out of the Sun

Just a note that I have added Bova's NONFICTION title The Amazing Laser and a minor essay to your verified 1984 Tor edition of Out of the Sun. I guess by 1984 you couldn't sell one hundred page books even to the juvenile audience, so Tor decided to combine two of them to get to a respectable page count :) Ahasuerus 02:53, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Artist credit on A Torrent of Faces?

I've given myself a mission of trying to clean up the separate, individually-credited Leo Dillon and Diane Dillon coverart titles that should be single jointly-credited titles. How is the cover on your verified A Torrent of Faces credited? I see from the scan there are two separate drawings.... I will also point Willem H. at this question, as he has 2-verified it. It's credited to both Dillons (Cover art by Leo & Diane Dillon). I believe the whole first series of Ace Specials had covers by them, and are thus credited. Willem H. 18:16, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

New Edit to Richard Condon

Hi, I've been away for several years and have had a *terrible* time figuring out how to contact you (or anyone else for that matter), but hopefully I've now succeeded -- I guess that I have to have a "user account" as well as just my plain account that lets me edit the database. Well, anyway, here I am, but only because I made a minor addition to Richard Condon for "A Talent for Loving" that I see that you approved. My question is this: I only put in the info for the 197-something paperback. The first edition was 1961, which I don't have. Should that info be in the present entry? Since its a nongenre entry I'd only change the title date to 1961, we generally don't support anything beyond a token entry for nongenre. I'll change the date for you. In my printing the story is as "The Colonel Came Back from Nothing-at-All" on the contents page, but as "The Colonel Came Back from the Nothing-at-All" on the story's title page. Is yours the same? Attila Hejja vs Hejji

Hi Kpulliam & Kraang, I think you have both made the same error based on an attempt to interpret a signature. You both credit the cover of this to Hejji, but as far as I can make out the signature on the photo scans looks similar to the signature posted here for Hejja. The title page says W. F. Harvey, so the collection needs to be made a variant title of William Fryer Harvey. (It is not, however, identical with any of the three other collections of that name on the William Fryer Harvey page.) Hi guys. I was trying to figure out how to enter my copy when I stumbled upon this. I have the alternate printing with the ad beginning with Saberhagen's THE BROKEN LANDS & it is indeed listed as 08130--50¢, followed by Alan Garner's THE MOON OF GOMRATH 53850--50¢. The copyright page appears identically as described in the notes. Should I simply clone the pub & enter it as a separate entry with the same info including publication date or should I just add/modify the note in this entry to consider as the same entry? Thanks. The 0-812 ISBN was used after Tor split from Pinnacle (0-523) as their distributor in October 1983. Perhaps yours is a reprint that failed to change the printing history on the copyright page? Mhhutchins 01:28, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Men Against the Stars - #534 printing

Morning! This. [3]. I have a G234 printing that I just added that matches your contents but this [4] cover. I am wondering if your catalog number is incorrect or possibly chipper/diced/flaked somewhat? My g234 has a red circle with pyramid at top left, Pyramid, top, Giant, lower, in circle. Also a G234 running downwards at very top spine. I have found references in Contento (general) and Tuck (specific G234), but no 534. Tuck could easily have missed it though. I had not thought of that, but have long known that Canadian printings were not adequately covered. I started noting when I run into "Printed simultaneously in Canada", hoping that will pull some out of hiding. I had NOT considered that the number sequence would be a cue, but thanks to you I will keep a better eye for it. I wish someone had worked to make a listing of the Canadian printings. Can you check this pub for me? I could have the same edition, but the first note is confusing me. It states: "Stated 1st printing of 1973 Berkley ed." where mine sais "Berkley Medallion Edition, October, 1973", no statement of printing. Ragnarok series

SORRY... seems that I have attached this to an existing article section. I tried to create a new section.


The series "Ragnarok" contains books from two separate series.

Not sure to whom I should direct this question, or where to find in the FAQ how to fix it myself.

I noticed that you're the primary verifier for the Tom Godwin novel "Space Prison", which is the first book in his series "Ragnarok".

But just this past year, author John Meaney has released a new book, which is the first book in his new series "Ragnarok". This new book has nothing to do with Godwin's work. It's only coincidence that the books have series with identical titles.

However, the books are showing up as though it's a single series, started by Godwin and now being continued by Meaney.

I have spent some time searching the FAQ to find out how to fix it, but am a little hesitant to do edits indiscriminately when I'm still a relatively new user.

Can you sort this out if you have time? Or otherwise pass this along to someone else who has the time to correct this?

Help:How to work with series should be clearer. The answer is to five a different name here. Perhaps Ragnarok (Meaney) or some other name that will distinguish the Meany series from the Goodwin series, and edit the title record(s) to change the series name on the Meaney series. You verified the book The Probability Corner By Walt & Leigh Richmond, as a 177 page novel. Looking at the book, though, there is a 5 page Prologue that comes before the numbered pages. JHB Cover Artist

Summary: I'm adding a cover artist to your verified publication Conehead.
Details: You are the primary verifier for both Conehead, by Gardner Fox, and Dragon Magic, by Andre Norton. In the former case, the cover artist is listed in the notes as leaving a "JHB" monogram, and in the later case, the cover artist is listed as "J. H. B.", based on that monogram. We appear to have 9 books in the ISFDB database whose covers have that mysterious monogram, and I am adding cover artists attributions for the 4 (including Conehead) that are not directly linked to that artist. Map in "Flinx in Flux"

I changed a content item in your verified Flinx in Flux from "Map" to "Flinx in Flux (Map)". My understanding is that this is the approach we've adopted so that when you look at a listing of the artist, it makes more sense than just having "Map" listed in their resume. Shadow of the Well of Souls

In regards to your verified Shadow of the Well of Souls, the notes have "All copies seen start 2 3 4... , may be 1st with printing error." My copy, which I have entered and am waiting for it to be approved, has a full printing number line "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" so you can change that note for your verified entry. Thanks for the info. I've been looking for a 1st since 1994 and everyone I've ever seen in Canada is a 2nd print. It looks like the 1st was sold in the US and later in the year a 2nd printing was sent to Canada. I always kept a lookout for his new books and the first time I saw it was in the airport in Sept of 1994 on my way to Ireland. You're welcome :) It's always nice to "meet" another Chalker fan. He's the only author for which I have all his novels (although not all first printings). I was also lucky enough to meet him at the World Science Fiction Convention in New Orleans in 1988, and sit down and have coffee and talk with him. What's It Like Out There? and Other Stories

I'm entering the November 1941 issue of Weird Tales which contains a story by Edmond Hamilton that we currently have titled as "Dreamer's World". However, the magazine actually has the title as "Dreamer's Worlds". Your verified pub What's It Like Out There? and Other Stories has the only other appearance of the story. Contento lists it without the "s". Could you double check how the title appears in your copy. Willem H. also has a primary verified copy and I'm leaving the same note on his page. I have this same printing but I cannot verify this:

This edition has the US price and a sticker was applied over top, it has the initials "R.H.C."(Randam House Canada)and "Price in Canada" $4.75.

Books sold in Canada by Randam House had these stickers applied when their "Printed in Canada" editions didn't have the Canadian price(i.e Canadian dollars) printed on the cover. It was common for several publisher to have two printings one US and one CDN with the different prices to reflect the currency difference. One other publisher would blackout the US price and put the CDN price under the painted over portion. The note indicates how the publisher distributed the book and I believe it should stay. Weinbaum's The Red Peri

Could I get you to take a look at your verified copy of The Red Peri. I am trying to determine if we have the same or different states of this book. You may also want to look at this discussion. My copy is bound in black cloth and the lettering of the title on the spine appears to be in 24 pt type (all capitals at a little less than 6mm high). Currey lists this as the "A" state. He lists the other states as B-salmon cloth, C - brown cloth, D - blue cloth, E - red boards and F - which is a later Donald Grant binding in black cloth stamped with cold with the difference being that the title on the spine is in 18 pt type. I'm correcting two entries in the contents of your verified edition of this book. Both refer to the way in which the author is credited on the story title page: (1) in "The Roads Must Roll", the author is listed as "Robert Heinlein", not "Robert A. Heinlein", and (2) in "In Hiding", the author is listed as "Wilmar Shiras", not as "Wilmar H. Shiras". I find the preceding conversation rather disheartening. Perhaps it should not have been placed on a public forum. In the case of Robert Reginald, I've found him always to be a gentleman in all my dealings with him and his submissions. He's been quite amenable to all suggestions and changes that I've presented. Bill Longley and I have both handled dozens of his submissions and have never treated him any more or less than any other editor. Perhaps any problems you're having with his submissions should have been brought to his attention. Sometimes all it takes is a some guidance, and a little patience on the part of the moderator. (unindent) I find that our editing interface can be somewhat intimidating (and our rules rather arcane) unless you deal with them on a regular basis. If you are an infrequent contributor, it's often easier to dump the data into our lap and hope that moderators sort it out rather than take the time to learn the rules that you will likely forget by the time you need to use them again. Which is why, I suspect, I get a fair number of e-mailed submissions and corrections from authors and librarians.

At first I found this disheartening, but after reading a number of librarian-run blogs I realized that this is true of most catalog applications. Thinking a few decades back, I remember how frustrated I was by what appeared to be arbitrary rules used by the catalog of the Library of Congress, but eventually I got used to them. Clarke's 'City and The Stars' - P3429

Your verified pub The City and The Stars has a note that states "Stated 1st printing of 1968 Signet ed. (note - while it's stated 1st printing it's actually the 3rd printing.)".... however this does not match my copy. My copy has "Third Printing" and then several lines later "First Printing, December, 1957". Hi, I also have a copy of the 7th edition of Medusa: A Tiger by the Tail (Del Rey / Ballantine, January 1988) but, even though it is printed in Canada, there is no Canadian price and no sticker claiming it to be from "R.H.C." (Randam House Canada). Can you perhaps change the notes to "Examples of this edition meant for the Canadian market had a sticker applied over top, it had the initials "R.H.C." I normalized the excerpt titles that appeared in your verified pub Lord Demon, so that I could merge them as they appear in my verified pub Europa Strike. To normalize them I added a space to the titles and corrected the label to lower case (excerpt). I'm merging them because they are a generic block of excerpts... since the block includes an excerpt of the larger novel the block has been added to. I am also putting a note in each excerpt title to indicate the relationship between this block, and to note that only excerpts appearing in this block should be merged.
